Best Cafes Between Portland and Seattle | Eater Seattle

"With over six locations in Washington (including Seattle), Olympia is one of the most successful roasters in the Pacific Northwest. Its flagship coffee shop and roastery is located right across from city hall, with a gleaming custom La Marzocco Strada machine sitting atop a massive coffee bar. Meanwhile, the Poursteady machine does automated pour overs, and those looking for sweeter beverages can opt for honey lavender lattes or mocha milkshakes." - Seiji Nanbu

This place, located right in front of City Hall, leaves a strong impression as soon as you step in, with its coffee roasting machines and cupping room on display. The clean space is filled with the wonderful aroma of coffee. The coffee's taste is subjective and varies by personal preference, but I generally enjoy coffee with bright acidity, so it didn’t quite match my taste. However, the Matcha Latte was excellent. In the back, I noticed a Barista Training Center in the building. It’s definitely a place worth recommending!

Google
The prices were pretty steep, I’m not sure it is entirely worth it based on that. But the matcha was citrusy and bright and so good! I got some coffee ground for drip at home, best home coffee I’ve had in a while. I’d go back to get more coffee beans and the occasional treat, but this won’t be a regular stop for me due to the price.

Google
Very good size coffee shop with exceptional customer service. For me service is everything when you're in this line of work/business. Engaging with customers and making small talks is definitely the way to go. I ordered their Sugar Plum Latte and a Vanilla Latte with oat milk. The Sugar Plum Latte was delicious, but I don't think I like the oat milk they carry. I've had other lattes with oat milk at their Capitol location and feel the same about those ones too. Their coffee beans in general are really good. You can taste the quality of their coffee. I'll probably just get my lattes with milk going forward. Can't wait to try their pour over and their upcoming seasonal menu.

Cool place! The gluten free biscuit was light in texture and had a good flavor. Tacos were a nice breakfast. A little expensive overall

Google
We only use our coffee beans from this place, undoubtedly best coffee roasters. They also have geisha beans. Very talented baristas serving perfect extraction. Also great ambiance and pastry selection. The only limitation is not many options for flavored coffee

Google
Had such a lovely cute cup of coffee. Service was okay- the lady attending us seemed like we were disturbing her phone time. But the other lady making our coffee beverages was nice and made our drinks delicious! Such a cute shop to stop by to sit down and catch up. They also sell some coffee, cute merch and such.

The coffee at this establishment is truly exceptional, consistently brewed to perfection with rich flavors that delight the palate. The staff members are equally impressive—each one is not only professional but also genuinely friendly and accommodating. They go out of their way to ensure every guest feels at home, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere that makes you want to linger a little longer. Whether you're a regular or a first-time visitor, their hospitality makes every experience enjoyable.

Google
As someone who has worked in coffee for a while as well as helped co-found a coffee shop in Wisconsin, I was thoroughly impressed by Olympia's coffee and service. The staff super helpful, friendly, and even refunded our drinks when their computer to make iced pour overs went out. Coffee was incredible (had to take some for the road back home). Really recommend!

Yelp
I was in desperate need of caffeine for my early work event in Olympia last Saturday. I therefore stopped by Olympia Coffee Roasting Company on my way. Olympia Coffee Roasting Company has several locations including one in Seattle and several in Olympia. This was my first time visiting any of their locations. This location serves a variety of coffee and tea drinks, fresh pastries, and breakfast tacos. Prices are fairly standard at about $6-$7 per drink plus an extra $1 if you want plant milk. I ordered their seasonal HAUPIA LATTE (light ice with oat milk) and a CHAI LATTE for my coworker. I also ordered a SUNRISE BREAKFAST TACO which had vegan chorizo and avocado. The HAUPIA LATTE was the perfect sweetness even without any adjustments (as someone who normally gets drinks at 30% - 50% sweet). It had a slight but not overpowering coconut flavor- honestly I slightly wish it was a bit more coconutty, but it still tasted good and reminded me of coconut lattes in Hawaii. My coworker (without knowing where I had gone), enjoyed her CHAI LATTE and said that upon first sip, she recognized the chai taste and asked if it was from Olympia Coffee. So apparently their chai is distinctive and not just your ordinary chai. The SUNRISE TACO, while small for $5-$6, hit the spot and was nice and hot. The chorizo had lots of taste (I didn't even bother adding the salsa packet) and the avocado was fresh and green. It definitely hit the spot and was the perfect complement to my sweet latte. The most remarkable thing about this coffee location was their service. The barista was taking and making my order at the same time and literally by the time I had finished my last word of ordering, they had both drinks ready for me at the counter ready to go! I've never had this quick and efficient service before at a coffee shop, or any establishment in general! It took a little time to heat up my taco, but they toast it on the spot for you and so that's understandable. I was in and out within 10 minutes and would've been 5 minutes if I had not ordered food. The interior is very modern and casual. They sell their own coffee beans and have nice coffee products in general. I would definitely come here to work or study if I lived in the area! It's street parking only and they don't have any loading or temporary parking spots and so you do have to pay for parking even if you're ordering to go or risk the 10 minutes. During my visit, I did drive behind several parking meter carts. The only other negative besides parking is that there was a homeless person outside of their store who leered at me as I walked by. This can happen anywhere downtown though, so just be street smart. Overall: 4/5 for food and drink, 5/5 for service, 4/5 for ambiance

Yelp
Found this little gem while we were in Olympia. The staff were super friendly, kind, and knowledgeable. (Down to earth). Got the Trifecta with espresso of your choice, Cortado and a sidecar coffee. Wanted to try the Sweetheart with Ethiopian origin but today the sweetheart was from Columbia. Cortado was excellent with a cute heart, coffee was excellent also (don't know what coffee it was), and did not appreciate the espresso Sweetheart/columbia origin. LOVE the overall experience. The seating was lovely and functional (with outlets). Looking forward to coming back already.

Yelp
We went into Olympia Coffee Roasters for a break from the chilly Sunday afternoon. While on this occasion I stuck with a cup of earl grey tea, the coffee smelled truly heavenly here. We sat in comfort while watching the coffee roasting, weather outside and admired their merch. This is a spot I would love to return to.

Yelp
Looking for a well made espresso drink? Then this is a no brainer. They also have lots of baked goods available. And the options change so check every visit. Yesterday I found a variety of mochi donuts, including ube for the win! We wanted to find a cafe that served coffee in mugs, rather than the usual disposable cups. Coffee is much like beer, wine, or any other beverage meant to be enjoyed, it tastes better in a mug or glass. We were happy to find this little cafe and have returned a few time since. I can honestly say, as a former barista, this cafe serves the best coffee in Olympia and their treats are top notch, too! Not a lot of seating, depending on the time of your visit, but since the seats are fairly hard we got the sense that they didn't want us to sit for a long time anyway. Having bar seats available along the roastery is a nice touch. Will gladly return.

Yelp
As a coffee connoisseur, I've visited countless coffee shops, but this place stands out in every way. The baristas here get it. You can see their dedication to craft in the flawless latte art on my cortado which is a rarity in most places. We ordered a cortado and two lattes to-go, and I was blown away by the flavors. The lattes were sweetened with their homemade brown sugar maple syrup, an exquisite combination of sweetness and depth. You can really taste the care they put into every cup. They also have incredible breakfast burritos/tacos that set your pallet up before your coffee. The pastries here are equally fantastic. The marionberry biscuit was a delightful twist on cornbread. Whether you're grabbing a quick coffee or staying to enjoy the atmosphere, this place has something special for anyone serious about coffee and good food.

Yelp
I got an iced oatmilk latte and a slice of the harvest squash bread. The latte was made well and had a great taste. The harvest squash bread was so tasty. Filled with walnuts and seeds. I really enjoyed it. I also loved the aesthetic inside. If I didn't have to jet off to SeaTac I would have stayed to enjoy the ambiance.

Yelp
If rude and pretentious is your thing, don't miss this spot. Food is mediocre, coffee is alright. Atmosphere would be greatly improved by a massive reboot on staff. I'm taking buh-bye to current staff and hire people who aren't walking around wearing entitlement badges.

Yelp
I really enjoyed this place. Fast friendly service. Very clean, modern week lit establishment. Lots of people hanging out and enjoying their coffee. Elderly couples, young families, professionals working on their laptops. I think anyone will feel welcome and comfortable here. Cappuccino was good and check out that latte art! Side shot of sparkling water was a surprise and very refreshing. Highly recommend!

Candi K.

Yelp
This was a cozy coffee shop. The baristas were really nice and service was pretty quick. I had a latte with oat milk and my daughter had an espresso to drink and a GF berry biscuit with a bacon cheddar scone.

Yelp
Oh how I love a cute coffee shop! While I was in Olympia for work, I of course had to grab some coffee and this place did not disappoint. They take their coffee very serious. I actually ended up getting a chai tea. It was delicious. I got some sort of blueberry. That was also delicious great we were in and out, so didn't have time to sit and enjoy my tea, but this is right in the downtown area staff. They even have an area to each batch of coffee. It's distributed to the public love this.

Yelp
Listen baby ain't no mountain high, ain't no valley low... Driving almost 8 hours in a day requires full for the body, forget the car. Made much needed pitstop. Pace had great service, right on the corner/ you do have to pay for street parking (not a fan). Seems like a coffee shop where you can sit, sip and work. Seemed like most humans had their electronics out. Coffee did the job, just needed some tackling fuel to get me back across state lines.

Alina D.

Yelp
If you love coffee and you're visiting Olympia, this place is a must! I got the Trifecta and it was lovely! This is a very cool spot, don't skip.

Yelp
My husband and I visited this cafe on a Saturday. Both the outside and inside were very busy, and I was going to give up finding a seat to enjoy the coffee. The line was fairly long, but it went pretty fast. The service was very friendly, and despite the busyness all their workers were smiling and helpful. Fortunately, as we were ordering the drinks we saw few seats open up! It was nice sitting inside since the space is spacious and even with busyness did not feel crowded. The coffee tasted wonderfully smooth with just the right balance of boldness. Their lemon blueberry scone was delicious also!

Yelp
While in the area, I was looking for a place I could do some work while sipping on some coffee. The coffee here was amazing!!! I highly recommend. I went back to get a second round of coffee from them that day. I had a latte with almond milk. The service was good. The location is simple, but lots of nice natural light- nothing fancy, but clean and chill.

Yelp
We stopped by to get some coffee and they had just put out their seasonal fall drinks! The barista was very friendly and answered all of our questions. I had the black sesame hazelnut latte and it was super yummy!

Yelp
Coffee tastes good. The coffee bean was not over roasted, so the original aroma of beans kept. Barista are welcomed. Palace are nice, besides it is a popular coffee shop.
google avatar

Yelp
My vanilla extra sweet latte tasted like old drip coffee with added vanilla flavor. I was very disappointed.
google avatar

Yelp
We received the absolute best service here. From start to finish. We ordered a cinnamon pastry and apple danish and these were sooooooo flavorful down to the last bite. This place is pricy for sure but worth the splurge. I will Definitely be returning for that special treat. I can't recommend this place enough.
google avatar

Sandra G.

Yelp
The coffee is great! Enjoying a cup of coffee and watching the traffic pass by or reading a book, it's a great shop. They even have pastries!! Yummm

Yelp
I highly recommend visiting this Olympia Coffee location if you're ever in the area and looking for a quality cup of coffee. There is seating on the inside and outside. Parking is easy to find. The baristas are very friendly and helpful. Their bakery selection is amazing. The quality of the coffee is superior and well worth the price. Definitely one of my favorite coffee shops around.

Oliver G.

Yelp
Great coffee and pastries -- one of the few places that doesn't constantly display the rainbow flag. Friendly stuff fast service
google avatar

Darius W.

Yelp
Wow! I do not drink coffee. I made the exception today. Wow, Pacific Northwest coffee is luxuriously lovely. I can't really tell you what I ordered because I don't speak coffee; I did taste really really good coffee with the oat milk! Put your pinky up when come here to get coffee.
google avatar

Ross H.

Yelp
I love this shop and have made it a part of my morning routine. The staff is friendly and efficient. The coffee is great and they have cold brew cans to go. The have a nice little bakery selection if you are hungry. The place is usually full of people just having nice chats with each other and has a great vibe.

Yelp
Enjoyed our experience on a weekend morning. Staff friendly and good service will visit again

Yelp
I am in love with the coffee here! I came here for the first time and got their seasonal drink. The "Sweater Weather" which is a latte with malted whiskey syrup, orange and Madagascar vanilla, topped with cherry juice-infused sugar is Christmas market in a sip! I could taste all the flavors that are listed in the description along with the coffee. The flavors are not overpowering at all and the drink has the perfect amount of sweetness. The coffee flavor is very smooth and the latte overall is very creamy and warming. I also got a bag of the Morning Sun coffee beans grounded at the shop and will be happily enjoying it at home. The barista was very nice and the service was fast. Customers are served one at a time from paying to getting drinks/food so it could be a bit of a wait but very well worth the wait. The coffee shop is very cute and aesthetic. There are plenty of tables and the place is very clean and neat. This is the best coffee I've had during my travel in Oregon and Washington. I will definitely come back! I am already dreaming about that latte!

Wang L.

Yelp
The best cortado I have ever tried Strong fragrance means it is from good roasted beans

Alexis D.

Yelp
Woke up every day in Olympia thinking about my morning lattee! Not once did they disappoint! The baristas are super friendly and it's a very well curated space. I would recommend to anyone looking for good coffee!!!!
google avatar

Elizabeth U.

Yelp
I love this coffee shop. The employees are consistent, polite, and very welcoming. The authentic is something out of a magazine and perfect for working or meeting friends. The coffee is amazing and they always have lots of food options.

John E.

Yelp
The shop is immaculately clean. The staff was friendly yet fast. The coffee was even better! Felt welcome as a Floridian tourist.
google avatar

Eli S.

Yelp
Worst americano I've had to date, they put a single shot of espresso in 16 oz of water, no one does that.
google avatar

Darshak B.

Yelp
Mediocre. Cortado was meh. Too much milk for the shot. Espresso was sour. Pour over was good.
google avatar

Amanda C.

Yelp
Good food from the new moon caffe, the lines can get kinda long but it's worth it for the cozy ambiance. The windows in that building are super nice. The coffee can be kind of hit or miss, and when they're busy it's hard to get it fixed.
google avatar

Carrie S.

Yelp
Nice ambiance and clean store. I visited on a busy Friday morning and was able to get a seat by the window. I got a sugarish mocha drink and it was good. Place had a good vibe and I was able to concentrated for a couple of hours to work. Will be back when we are back to the area.
google avatar

Lei G.

Yelp
My favorite go to for coffee & pastry when in Olympia. Friendly service, cute interior and of course great pastries and coffee- the hazelnut coffee was one of my favorites with the orange cranberry scone
google avatar

Jane M.

Yelp
Lovely coffee shop (infact one of my favs) in Downtown Olympia. This coffee shop is huge with decent space for folks to sit around. I ordered the Lavender Piper Latter and I am such a fan of this drink. Delicious Latte served by some of the friendliest barista folks here. I also ordered the banana bread, spinach feta croissant and another veggie sandwich and all the items were delicious. All in all I will be stopping here everytime I am in Olympia to get my dose of caffeine satiated.
google avatar

Chris J.

Yelp
Honestly this place may be the best in town but I'm rating it a 4 star bc it only seems okay. The offerings are unique and good, but it's a good coffee shop like every other good coffee shop. There was a long wait and the service was not friendly just very business focused. Probably to get through the line. I pick and rate coffee shops on coffee offerings, vibe and decor. This one lacked a bit in vibe for me.
google avatar

Megan K.

Yelp
Delicious coffee and amazing pastries. We tried a few different pastries which were tasty! The right amount of sweet. As for the coffee, I decided to have their gingerbread flavor (all syrups house made) and it was perfect. Always recommend Olympia Coffee. I was staying for business and we stopped in both mornings. Great service as well!
google avatar

Henna S.

Yelp
Great coffee options! Stopped by while visiting Olympia. And the lab was so cool to watch! This was a nice area right across from City Hall.
google avatar

Lily C.

Yelp
This place is the reason why I even regret sometimes moving away from Olympia Washington. I loved to go and work on things, read, write, etc. I always got a latte and a almond croissant. To this day, I have not had a latte or croissant like the ones here (and I have had a LOT of both). Their simplistic design and open-concept cafes are welcoming and cozy in a state that rains so much. Every time I come back to the state to visit, I make sure to prioritize a morning at Olympia Coffee Roasting Company.
google avatar

Shannen M.

Yelp
This little coffee shop is a hidden gem. I love the ambiance. It's small, but cozy. Not to mention the excellent service from the baristas. I went there for the first time and they recommend a coffee for me. I tried their seasonal lavender latte with oat milk. It was so good and well balanced. I also got the lavender mochi donut and it was delish! I'll definitely come back again to try something new.
google avatar

Benjamin M.

Yelp
Love this place! The coffee was amazing! Quality coffee and excellent prices! Would definitely come back! The pour over was so good I'm still craving that cup 8 hours later! Bought some beans to go too! Unfortunately, looks like the indoor seating is blocked off.

Yelp
Well call me a devout fan of this highly reputable coffee roaster. I first heard of this joint from a friend who now lives in New Jersey. He was so hooked during his time in Olympia that till this day, he still ships bags of the Big Truck organic beans to NJ. That was 4 years ago! I have been impressed with their beans and have brought bags home to friends in NY. People have all been asking for more. They also make a wicked oat latte. I had never seen a coffee house that weighed the amount of fresh grind before an espresso. Their dedication to the craft is reflected in the quality and taste of their product. I look forward to returning. Thanks to a great product and a lot of high end coffee fiends back in New York, I am now a full time coffee transporter every time I fly back to NY.
google avatar

Dan M.

Yelp
We were recently in Olympia and needed lattes to get the day going. Street parking was easy and free on Sunday. The counter help was super friendly. The baked goods in the case looked yummy but we didn't partake. Our lattes were great. They use a lighter roast than I'm used to for their espresso, but still tasty.

Yelp
I am a starbucks addict. There, I said it. I travel often for work so I usually work out of starbucks to get the admin work done but passed by here on my previous trip to Olympia. So last week when I was there I decided to visit there on my first day and fell in love. I went here three days in a row and got the same drink each time! The cafe itself is super moden and pristine reminding me of an elegant brewery mixed with fine art. There are plenty of table to sit at and great wifi with the password sweetheart. During my first visit, the barista who wants to go to CNA school recommended their nitro iced coffee telling me it was the closest to cold brew that they had, but was better as it had a citrusy flavor. She offered me a sample and it was good! Once she served me a large size of it, which was well worth the $6 + tip, It tasted even better in bigger gulps! The citrus ending was an amazing way to finish each strong taste! Throughout the three days, I probably spoke to 5 different Baristas getting either the coffee, water, or a pastry. They were all super nice and friendly making you feel at home. One of them told me they liked working there and it was a great place to get work done since it was normally pretty quiet. They were right, it was filled with students, young professionals, families, etc but were all respectful and their to do something while enjoying a delicious drink! I will be back here the next time I am in town!

Yelp
Okay ,so I've been here a couple times and waited to review, mainly to see if they were consistent with the Awesomeness! I absolutely love it here. It's trendy and charming! As you walk in you're greeted instantly by a friendly smiling face! Customer service is spot on! There is a little section selling merchandise and place to charge your phone/laptop. WiFi If you work nearby or let's say The City Hall or the Police Dept, I envy you because you can walk across the street for a cup of Awesomeness anytime you please! I'm not a fan of downtown parking, today was a breeze because of the Holiday!
google avatar

Kristin K.

Yelp
Best matcha latte I've ever had! Smooth, silky, and flavorful!! It's a must try in Olympia!

Yelp
Great coffee and nice people. However, twice now I have come to work from this coffee shop and my devices connect to the wifi signal, but there is no internet. I have tried with two different laptops, one windows and one Mac, and two iPhones. Nothing, nada. I asked about this and they said that some devices just don't like the network but if their music is playing then that means the internet is working. Also that they have looked at it multiple times and can't figure out the problem. Then, as a coffee shop, shouldn't you switch out your equipment? They made this sound like it happens often, and again happens across 4 different devices of mine. I now am wasting my work time having to drive back home to work, after I spent almost $7 at this coffee shop, because they can't get their internet figured out......as a coffee shop. I just don't see how they think this is not incredibly disrupting to their customers.
google avatar

Christine S.

Yelp
The smell as you walk in is sensational! Note that at a coffee roasting company when you order a mocha you won't be getting a sugary chemically tasting beverage, but a pure chocolate sauce (less sweet) with a flavorful brew of coffee. They know their coffee beans. The pastries were absolutely delicious. During Covid there is no indoor seating and the selection of food is limited. Highly recommend the honey lavender latte!
