Where to Find the Best Yak-A-Mein in New Orleans | Eater New Orleans

"This Mid-City staple is known for its beloved owners (shoutout Ms. Vivian), po’ boys, hot line, and great lunch deals — basically, everything you could ask for in a New Orleans corner store. It’s also the neighborhood’s first choice for yak-a-mein when it’s not second line season; it’s traditional, fresh, and loaded with ingredients. Only downside is it’s closed Sundays." - Beth D’Addono

Google
Some of the best shrimp fried rice in town! Great prices and Mamma-San is as friendly as they come. Also, an oddly vast selection of assorted household products, lagniappe 😉

Vivian was rude to me. She greeted 2 white men but didnt say anything to me. I will never visit your establishment again. Clear prejudice and just flat out rude.

I love the po'boys there!!! The shrimp po'boys is stuffed with shrimp and the catfish po'boys has plenty of catfish. My first time going there was last year, and I went again this year. Olympia is on my list to go whenever I visit New Orleans. I brought this sandwich back with me to California 😅 They also have very friendly people working there.

Best Po-Boys in the City. Don't waste your time going to tourist traps. Eat good home cooked food at Olympia Food Store.

Google
Really friendly staff, good food at great prices, and they have lots of grocery items you wouldn’t expect to find at a corner store. It’s a neighborhood gem

Residents of the great little corner of Mid-City near the cemeteries couldn't ask for a greater little corner store. Family owned, nicely stocked, fairly priced, incredibly convenient. The *only* thing I don't like about Olympia Mart is that it's closed on Sundays. Thanks to Vivien and fam for serving our neighborhood!

Google
Some of the best food I've ever had in my life. Reasonably priced. Had 5 menu items. The shrimp fried rice, red beans poured over the rice (a special request), an egg roll (phenomenal), the yakemein, and hot sausage po'boy.

Yelp
The previous response about racism is completely insane. Given that they bought a San Pele and distinguished themselves from "those who buy 40ozes" you can imagine what type of person this is (white) and that's why they're trying to tank the reviews of an Asian-owned store. Because they didn't bend over backwards and kowtow to them, probably. Anyway, the people who work here are friendly and efficient. And clearly beloved by locals who seem to go every single day. They're just efficient. The yakamein was great, and so was the fast Chinese food. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Great food. Nice people. Po boys are delicious. Everything you want in a New Orleans corner store.

Yelp
One of the best lunch deals around. Easily two servings for under $10. Well seasoned and prepared. Too fancy to enjoy food from a corner store? That just leaves more for those of us who are not. Owner/operators are very nice people. So glad OFS is my neighbor!

Yelp
EXCELLENT!! Love that this is super close! Corner store with a hot line and other goodies.

Yelp
Great fried shrimp po-boy. Great staff and plenty of off street parking. Highly recommended.

Yelp
I recently moved a few blocks away from this store. Given the bad reviews, I wasn't sure what to expect. What I found is the nicest corner store I've ever lived near with amazingly delicious poboys and the kindest staff. I can't see any reason why someone would accuse them of racism so those reviews are outdated or just incorrect. Definitely, definitely, definitely come by here for a poboy and some fries. I'm looking forward to trying some other menu items soon but these are sooo good, I haven't ventured beyond them yet.

Yelp
Olympia Food Store is the *BEST* place to get your neighborhood po'boy/snacks/drinks/grocery needs. I've been going for 6+ years, & the owners are personable and very friendly; they get to know their local clientele and regulars. Food is delicious! Convenience at its *absolute* best

Yelp
Top quality corner store! Friendly, family-run place with solid po-boys and nice lunch plates. They also have a decent beer selection.

Yelp
My neighbor discovered my love for yaka mein, and surprised me one day with a bowl and fried chicken from this place. Heaven. It has become one of my stops when friends are in town and they need the "world tour" (if we can't find yaka mein on the secondline, that is of course first choice). Staff is friendly and walking in to a convenience store to see guys playing cards at a table while watching cartoons never gets old.

Yelp
Right around the block. This place somehow always manages to have the things I need. One morning my hungover girlfriend requested: (1) purple pedialyte, (2) yellow Gatorade, (3) a mini ginger ale, (4) D Battery's (????)and (5) two small bags of lays potato chips. It was all there. I was amazed. How much of my amazement should be contributed to the fact that I was baked out of my mind? Idk. Also, the people that own the place are the nicest. There's a good sense of community, the owners are great, and they have a magic genie lamp that produces everything your hungover girlfriend NEEDS. Top notch.

Yelp
They have the best shrimp po boy. Domicile is no where near this place. It's a small corner store in a pretty nice neighborhood. Love their chicken wings, be prepared to wait 15 minutes though because they made it to order. I was new in the neighborhood. While waiting on my food I encountered a review on this place. How can someone be called a racist thieves? I have encountered lots of racist and bigotry but the previous review got me LMAO. SERIOULY!! That comment was racist in itself. So only white ppl drink Pellegrino and blacks drink 40oz.? This country belongs to no one. Let me remind you the word on CONVENIENCE....Prices are clearly marked and id you don't like it don't buy it and don't come..People don't need to deal with this ignorance.

Yelp
I love this little hidden gem. Just a couple blocks from my home. They have a huge and delicious shrimp poboy. It's overflowing with shrimp and you get fries with a drink for $11.99. The owners are so kind. Can't beat it.

Yelp
Has everything I need right by my house. The po boys are great and they have always been very friendly. I go there all the time. I do wish they stayed open until 8pm though

Yelp
The best poboy in New Orleans, and it's literally next door to my house! they make it just like my grandma does with toasted leidenheimer bread and shredded crisp romaine. Also I love the family that owns the place, I always feel at home

Theresa B.

Yelp
We love this place. Great food, prices and friendly service Our favorites include daily specials, po boys and yaka mein. My husband has often asked them if they will adopt him.

Yelp
Thank you, for having everything I ever need. From new bike tubes, to beer. Thank you, for always being friendly, having crappy poboys, and keeping the place relatively clean. Thank you, for taking the time and trouble and kicking out the drunk guy who harrasses everyone. Please, open on Sunday.

Yelp
I always said that Parkway had the best shrimp po boys in the city, however Olympia is a STRONG tie for that first place. If you know anything about parkway's shrimp po boys, then you know it's the business. Olympia however offers just as good (if not better) shrimp as parkway, and the prices are clutch. I can get a large shrimp po boy combo with fries and a drink for less than one po boy alone at most other places. I've had other sandwiches and hot lunches and have never been disappointed, great neighborhood store.

Elliot H.

Yelp
I'm a Native New Orleanian who was born in this neighborhood- yet these people are literally the most racist thieves I've ever encountered. They clearly make up their own prices and this is the THIRD time they have overcharged me. Was it the San Pellegrino I purchased instead of a 40oz, that made you judge me? I will be back to rectify my receipt, AGAIN. There is no room for bigotry in this world or this neighborhood? We are a melting pot and a port city... GET IT TOGETHER.

Lauren A.

Yelp
Super convenient, good cheeseburgers, poboys and yakamein, never know what you're gonna find in there. Nice proprietors, to boot.

J. R.

Yelp
This place is always friendly and helpful. I've never encountered racism here and I've been in multiple times. Nola N. maybe it was your attitude that sucks. If you go to his reviews you'll see every one of his many reviews has been a one star. Pretty pathetic you need that much attention at the expense of a small local business. The food is always good and the store is always filled with basic essentials.
