Olympic Cafe Review - Mid-City - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Olympic Cafe is small—so small you’ll probably have to stand outside if all the seats are taken. It’s also only open from 7am to 12:30pm. And they only take cash. Got all that? Now, onto the charm: this 50-year-old spot in Mid-City is the quintessential diner where regulars tell you they’ve been eating at since they were kids. The counter is lined with chunky mugs full of mediocre coffee, the place smells like bacon fat, and the menu plays the hits. Pancakes, hash browns, and eggs, any way you like them, are all fine, but we gravitate toward their Hawaiian-leaning dishes like spicy Portuguese sausage and grilled teriyaki short ribs." - Sylvio Martins

Google
Love Greek food. I had the combo sampler. Moussaka was ok. Was definitely missing a couple of spices. Dolmades were good, but not great, as the meat was a little dry. The spanakopita was very good! My favorite, actually! The Greek salad was great, and the pita was good, but not homemade. The Baklava Cheesecake was also ok. Definitely not homemade. The service was amazing, and the place was clean. A little high priced for the quality of the food. If you've never been to Greece and had authentic Greek food, then you may really like it. I would still recommend this place. Other items may be totally amazing! I will give it another try at a later time! I would suggest playing Mediterranean music to add to the experience. Just my opinion.

Amy I'm going back home

Google
I seriously just wanted some good spanakopita and ordered it from DoorDash… literally paid 14$ 4 a teeny piece of it total 21$ for it to be delivered. Very disappointed that I paid 14$ for maybe 3 bites… for that much money in my opinion should have been a lot more than that. For the size it was definitely should be around 5 or 6$… for 14$ would be the amount to pay for the ingredients to make a tray full. The flavor was not bad, but the price is just too much so I don’t think I will be ordering them again. Sorry just to much for such a small amount.

Google
Great food with a wide selection. Had the lamb gyro and it was phenomenal; especially for the price. My server was so nice and even let me sample a few wines before I ordered. Definitely worth the money and time.

Google
The saganaki was flamed table side and delicious. The lamb shank was cooked perfectly and delicious. The yummy chicken kabobs were tender and served over a bed of rice. The generous portion was enough for two. Our waitress was attentive and the place was spotless. More people need to try this restaurant if you like Greek food!

Google
I wasn't really a fan of this restaurant. The visit started with the waitress being upset with her collegue, because she saw we weren't getting any service. She told us she is the only one working in the place. Even though I noticed she was right, because she was the only one running the restaurant.. it felt kinda weird as a costumer. The food wasn't very good either. It wasn't authentic at all. The feta was very cheap quality. There was so much dressing over the salad that I didn't taste anything else. The chicken of the other salad was very dry. It is impossible that it was freshly prepared. Really disappointed with my experience, because the reviews on this page are very good

Google
Stopped here on an impromptu lunch. It’s a cute diner with great food. Portion sizes were huge. I ordered a side of fries and didn’t even eat them because the gyro was so big. My only critique would be I was surprised how expensive the bill was. We spent $50 on two gyros, one coke, one side of fries, & a cup of soup. It was good, I’ll be back for sure.

Google
I have been a patron of this restaurant for 30 years. For about the past 20 years or more I have dealt with Elaine. As of lately, her attitude and manners towards myself and customers is disgusting. Not only is she rude and talks down to customers she also will add things to your bill without asking you. When you notify her of these things she hides and tells the other waitresses that she is not taking the extra items off of your bill. In my opinion, she is a miserable coward and somebody else should deal with customers. She should be in the back washing dishes. It is mind-boggling how she has lasted there this long hopefully the new owner will realize that she is Running customers off and maybe that is why his restaurant is not as full as it used to be. Not only will not be going to this restaurant anymore, and I hate to say that because I love the food, but I will also have to share the story with all of my friends and family and my 40 years of living in Bradenton, there is a lot of them. I hope the three dollars was worth it Elaine. My name is Stephen Bruce

Google
Wow just ate at Olympic Cafe and delicious! Fresh pita bread, gyro meat was tender and juicy - large portion, order the homemade potato salad - creamy savory wonderfully different, it came with a small cup of homemade coleslaw crunchy and not too sweet - perfect. Owner was really nice and next time I’m trying the Pastitsio. Highly recommend!

Yelp
What a gem! First visit . We both got the Lemon Chicken Soup...perfection. Fresh, warm pita bread brought to the table. He got the chicken dinner with stuffing and gravy and a side of traditional Greek potatoes. Excellent. I got the Greek Combo dinner and it was fantastic. Stuffed grape leaves, Moussaka, Spanokopesda, Pastitsio...so, so good. We split a piece of Baklava warmed and extra honey drizzled over. Service was great, ambiance is warm and homey - lots of Greek pride. We will most definitely be back.

Yelp
Olympic Cafe has always been a favorite of mine while visiting Anna Maria Island and Holmes Beach. However, sad to say, this time was the exception. The ambiance is definitely Greek with lots of Greek memorabilia on the walls. The service was excellent although they were closed unexpectedly the day before due to a staffing issue. The food wasn't up to its usual standards. The Gyro was dry and the cabbage roll was tasteless. I won't be back this trip, but I will give them another shot when we're back in the new year. To bad as our party expands tomorrow to ten people.

Yelp
Great Greek Salad I love Greek salads, the dressing carries such bold flavor. Include some feta cheese and kalamata olives and you have an explosion of good tastes, and there is so much more. From traditional to whatever other ingredients work, it is a bowl of bright colors and flavors. Lettuce, no lettuce, onions for sure, as are tomatoes and cukes. The one I had today from Olympic Café even had a few banana peppers. I fondly remember one where there was a scoop of potato salad on top. The Greek Salad I had at Olympic Café ranks very well. It was on a deep plate or a shallow bowl, looking very attractive. I enjoyed making the whole thing disappear. The last part, swimming in dressing, was the best part for me. Where's my spoon? I liked the place and the service was friendly and good. The tables are close together, like pre-covid spacing, I hope we don't go back to that too soon. They also added a small service charge for using a credit card. I didn't look at the menu, maybe it disclosed that. I found out when I went up pay.

Yelp
The fish dinner is fabulous. The Cuban sandwich is amazing. I gave it a five star because it's really tasty!

Yelp
Judging by the older crowd packing the place you know it's good. Great dinner menu and specials.

Gina G.

Yelp
Rather drive to tarpon for real Greek food it's Cisco homemade not made in house I rather drive to tarpon for the good stuff

Donald O.

Yelp
Food is always good and the service is great also. The prices are reasonable compared to other places in town

Yelp
Wholesome family restaurant; very busy but still great service. They were very accommodating to making changes to meals for the little ones (just bowl of plain pasta with butter and Parmesan cheese, and fries). The portions are pretty hearty, most of us had leftovers to take home. The eggplant Parmesan was filling and tasty. Definitely recommend getting the gyros platter.

Yelp
I was very much looking forward to eating at the Olympic Cafe after seeing the menu on their website. I was not disappointed in the least in the food that I selected. I started with the lemon soup, which was tasty. I had the almond and cranberry salad with raspberry vinaigrette. (Salads containing nuts and cranberries are a favorite of mine.) I was told by the server that the portions are very generous and that was no exaggeration. I had to take about half of it home partially because I was determined to have the New York cheesecake dessert. Service was excellent and the ambience is wonderful. Everything had a family-friendly face on it. I plan to go back time and again to sample many other attractive items on the menu.

Yelp
We stopped for dinner on a Thursday evening. We were greeted and seated immediately. Our server came right over to take our drink order. We had the saganaki for an app. It was very good. For dinner, I had the gyro, and my partner had the beef stroganoff special. We both enjoyed our meals very much. The food was very good and the service was great!
google avatar

Rino L.

Yelp
The food was good. I had a gyro platter. The meat was a little dry, but tasty. Nice change of pace for the area though. The service was very friendly and professional. Decor is old school. I'd check it out again.

Yelp
Was looking for a Greek diner with Gyros, this place was great! Great service. The interior quaint but could use update. But def worth the trip. Portions big also

Olga I.

Yelp
Have been 2 times already in the past week. It was amazing! The food, the service, everything was awesome. It was definitely not a tourist trap but a nice local small family resto. We ate lamb shanks twice there as it was just out of the world! The greek potatoes were so good too! Not sure why people don't like the food, just shoose the right meals:)
google avatar

Kathy V.

Yelp
I had a CRAVING for Gyros. I so wanted and hoped for good food $26 dollars worth. So the greeting was warm and friendly through the window service. The Gyros meat was dry, and seemed old. I ordered a cheeseburger for my hubs and he said it was the worst burger he's ever had. It was hard and tasteless. The bun was old and stale. I'm from Chicago, I understand that I may have set the bar too high but c'mon...I didn't go inside so I don't know what the Ambiance is like. Looks like I'm once again looking for a good Greek Gyro. :(

Tetyana K.

Yelp
Really nice restaurant with authentic Greek cuisine, portions were tasty and a good size, wonderful atmosphere and excellent service. We will definitely be back.
google avatar

Vilma E.

Yelp
This feels like a family owned local business. The service was wonderful and everyone was pleasant. Indoors was quaint with that touch of Greek! The taste and textures were different from your usual Greek food but still good. It's a bit pricey if you want to try a variety of dishes or sides. Here's the breakdown of food we tried. Greek spinach pie was amazing flaky light pastry top. Hummus had a different taste I didn't quite like as much. Liver dish was very good and so was the New England clam chowder. The Baklava was dry but the taste was good. Overall it was worth the try. Opa!

Ric J.

Yelp
A little pricy, but it is FloriDUH Good old fashioned Greek Diner Good for, service and clean. Tried and true though the decades

Jamie P.

Yelp
I would say 4.5 stars. We got here late but food was freshly prepared. Service was very good. Ordered the calamari. It was pretty good but a tiny bit bland. But I would still order again. I split the Greek platter. It was very very good. The Greek salad was great. My husband had the chicken parm. He's not much of a Greek fan. So I was thankful that there were many choices. We will definitely be returning.
google avatar

Sarah B.

Yelp
We did carry out from here while we were on vacation and we were not disappointed! It's hard to find good Greek food where we live and Olympic didn't disappoint! My grandma ordered a chicken salad with almonds and it was huge, she ate off it of it for 3 meals. This was hands down the best spinach we've ever eaten in a restaurant. The prices were great, too! My husband and I split a chicken entree and we loved it.
google avatar

Lance Y.

Yelp
It's the really thing 100% Greek Greek very homemade very good Saginaw use unbelievable. The smell of Greek food in the restaurant is good. Are you looking at with everyone else's eating highly recommended four stars salads are fabulous.
google avatar

Kory R.

Yelp
Good stuff. Great Greek food. The owners are awesome. You ashluld def stop in! The fries are gluten free so I def love this place.
google avatar

Amy G.

Yelp
Let's just say Im really confused how they won many food awards. The flavor of the meats were ok but just not what was expected after seeing all their awards on the wall. I ordered the chicken gyro platter. I got rice with chicken chucks sautéed onions, peppers and mushrooms with a small container of sauce. That's definitely not the norm, like I said ‍. My hubby ordered gyro platter, he literally got gyro meat, pieces of pita and French fries. Oh and a salad. He was very disappointed. His meal was a pile of gyro meat. SMH. For that he should have just ordered a gyro sandwich. Don't plan on returning. :(
google avatar

Bill J.

Yelp
The food was fine, and the service personnel was exceptional, but the management (probably the owners) were not the best. I ordered a burger as I usually do with a new BLD, just to check bona fides. I noticed that offering no sides, and a 5 oz burger, I knew, for me, I needed to order a little heavy. So I asked the server if they offered an additional patty for a premium. She was flummoxed, which should have been a clue, since she was otherwise so confident. She said that she 'guessed' she could inquire. Later she returned with the answer, yes, but I'm not sure of the price. I didn't think it would be an issue - (wrong). When we got the bill, it was right about at double the cost for an additional patty, Wow. Then they charged me $1.25 extra to use a card, rather than cash. No warning, just Boom! I waited at the counter for a long time until someone asked if everything was ok, I said, well..... Not going back.

Yelp
Poor customer service. Gyro pita bread was chewy and OVER stuffed with salty meat. Since when is a tip requested through a drive thru? I would give this place zero stars if I could. Will not be back.

Dorothy B.

Yelp
I do not recommend this place. I made a mistake as i was leaving a review for a different place. i clicked on their name by mistake. the new people who took over this place does not have the same taste in food as it did with the original owner who had it for years and years. The food is not up to the standards it's always had in past with the Greek family who owned it. The service has had a big drop. Save your money and go to a real greek place. Cortez Cafe is the place if you want real Greek food. No I am not a family member nor a friend. Im a customer who knows good food from bad food.

Janie A.

Yelp
We have had several delicious meals at Olympic Cafe. Today I had one of the best salads I have even eaten. It was one big plate full of chicken, lettuce, tomatoes, cranberries, cheese, almonds and top with an amazing Raspberry Vinaigrette. We will keep going back ! The restaurant is very clean and the staff is great!

Anthony A.

Yelp
Wonderful home style Greek food unlike what you find with larger corporate chains. Waitress was terrific as you can tell she was a true professional who enjoyed the tough work. Would highly recommend. Watch out, huge portions!
google avatar

Karen R.

Yelp
Although it's always busy, it's worth the wait! The food is delicious and always served hot every time we go. My husband ordered the Greek platter that had spanakopita pistachio stuffed grape leaves and some thing else. I had the Greek Gyro platter. The Gyro meat is tender and so flavorful. The service was good and even though they are very busy and it is cramped due to all the tables it is so worth the wait. We've been coming here now in Bradenton for about three years.

Caroline O.

Yelp
This has always been one of our favorite places, living in Bradenton for 24 years. Haven't been there in a while due to covid. Was excited today to go for lunch and get our favorite french onion soup and calamari. What a disappointment. The soup was a yellow broth and the onions were like just boiled in that yellow tasteless broth. No seasoning and no flavor whatsoever. Cheese was not any better. The calamari was all crumbs, very few nice pieces and most of them were tough. Seemed like a bag a frozen calamari that has been in the freezer too long. The chicken gyro was ok, the sauce was not garlicky like it used to be and the chicken wasn't even grilled. Sadly will take this favorite place off our list. The worst part is we took someone with us that we have not seen in a few years and they always like the place also.
google avatar

Ryan M.

Yelp
Back in my hometown, I was craving a staple here in West Bradenton, Greek food @ Olympic Cafe. I got my usual to start, the saganaki, soooo good. Flambé cheese w/ brandy and lemon with warm pita. Remember the name! A must try. For entrees I got Moussaka, another traditional Greek dish (eggplant, potato, beef & béchamel) & she got the gyro platter. Just a gyro with fries and a side salad. Not what I expected, but good none the less. Wednesday night was slow enough to get in & get out with decent service. Will be back for sure
google avatar

Michelle D.

Yelp
Great food!! We went and got take out, and did not have to wait long at all! The server at the window was very nice and the food was great. The portions are very large also.

Dave B.

Yelp
I stop by for a gyro sometimes because I think they are pretty good, but they are not Kronos gyros, which is what I got up north and which are much better. The thing is, they are never hot, so I asked the lady at the window if she would make it a tad - just a tad - crisper, and of course the meat came back overdone and dry. I tried to call to figure out just exactly how to order it so I got it hot and asked to speak to the lady who ran the drive up window. I was hung up on and my subsequent call was not answered. As simple as that, hung up on and ignored. What?

Isander S.

Yelp
Our #1 option for Gyros and Baklava Cheesecake! Wanted to try something different and the lamb shank turned out to be delicious; added rice & Greek peas and it all was very good. Other reviewers complain about quantity, but, I'm a big guy and it filled me up just fine...I guess I'm not looking at taking left overs with me! Yes, I recommend it.
google avatar

Karen G.

Yelp
Excellent food, generous portions and great price. Highly recommend!!! We had grapes leaves as an appetizer. Had to try the chicken lemon soup. Entries were amazing !!!
google avatar

Fred H.

Yelp
This place was wonderful. The wait staff anticipated our needs which was a welcome experience. I had the gyro special which was overstuffed with meat-- couldn't eat it all. French fries were cooked just right -- crispy outside soft inside. I also ordered the lemon chicken soup. It was the best I've ever had -- just the right amount of lemon. Awesome. My mom ordered the liver and onions with bacon added. An additional charge for the nicely crispy bacon. Mashed potatoes and butternut squash filled out the meal. She did find the bean soup to be too salty for her tastes. Freshly baked pita bread came out with the meal. Did I say it was freshly baked-- awesome flavorful bread. I'd definitely come back to try their grape leaves and lamb dishes. They have other foods on the menu to satisfy everyone's tastes. As we were leaving, I noted the dinner specials were filled with a variety of fish dishes at reasonable prices.

Lexa L.

Yelp
This "family" owned business is the epitome of entitlement. My boyfriend and I try to call and order ahead and the woman who answered seemed very annoyed that my boyfriend said "one second I have to look at the menu item name" and she replied "well then you'll need to just call back"... So she hangs up and he finds the item in 30 seconds and calls back for her to then answer "yeah hello, you're going to need to wait now". After she had already told us to call back, we end up getting there before she even took our order. Upon walking in you can tell the place is 60 years old and so are all the workers. The woman in the front (owner) says "I'll be with you in just a second" and then proceeded to do god knows what for 15 mins in front of us with out saying a word or even asking what we wanted. Then a couple walks to the front to pay and she walks right up to them to check them out and I butted in and said "can we order first please? We've been waiting for 15 mins now" to which she replies in a very rude and aggressive tone " I told him it would be a few minutes" ACTUALLY you said "I'll be with you in just a second" and set up the wrong expectation of us to then wait 20 mins before we even get to order TAKE OUT. TERRIBLE SERVICE and staff

Anna M.

Yelp
Pro's: open Sunday, decent food, though Greek potatoes were sad and tasteless. Con's: Pretending covid doesn't exist. No masks at all on the owner/manager and multiple people in the kitchen. Both waitresses were masked but one had her nose hanging out. (I know waiting tables is hard work, as a former waitress, but if EMTs and nurses can do their jobs masked, so can everyone.) Stopped here for takeout after first choice restaurant was found closed, so didn't order ahead. Had to order and sit so had plenty of time to get nervous about catching covid while I waited. The place was packed, with no table spacing, and full of elderly folks. Selfish, inexcusable restaurant management.
google avatar

Louise B.

Yelp
I had the Greek combination platter, combination of moussaka, pastichio, spanakopita and stuffed grape leaves. $18.95 Best Greek food I've ever had including meals in Greece. Worth going out of your way for!!!
google avatar

David F.

Yelp
All I can say is Excellent, The Service, Food , and Value was amazing. The trip to the cafe was worth it
google avatar

Lydia G.

Yelp
I've been here several times and it never fails. Love the Gyro Salad. It's huge, fresh, with an abundance of gyro meat. Also comes with pita bread and butter. Orders are delivered quickly by friendly servers. Has a real neighborly feel to the place.

Donald B.

Yelp
We had lunch there today for the first time in quite a while and I didn't enjoy my meal as much as I have in the past. We had great service and plenty to eat but to me it just wasn't as flavorful as in the past. My wife had a gyro that she thought was just fine.
google avatar

Amy K.

Yelp
In from Alaska hoping for some Greek food. Saturday night at 7:30 the place was packed and hopping. We were greeted by a white board boasting more than 10 specials and were immediately seated in a cozy booth. My husband ordered the Moussaka Plate, which included Greek salad, spanokopita, stuffed grape leaves and pistachio ( the latter was new for us) I had the basso sandwich... a Greek fish, with Greek seasonings. The waitress was 100 % on it and made sure we got exactly what we wanted Ended the meal with tea, coffee and a baklava to share, and all for under $40.00. We hope to be back next year!

Aaron S.

Yelp
The food was okay. I had a gyro platter and a Greek salad. They were both okay, but nothing special. The server was very nice. There is too much competition in the area for me to go back.

Chris S.

Yelp
This little place is the one of the best Greek food we have ever had, and we are Greek!! wonderful servers, nice ladies, we started with lemon soup, had the moussaka and he had the grape leaves and Greek potatoes, then took home the Baklava, cant say enough about this place, the food is fantastic in every way, cant wait to come back

Restaurant P.

Yelp
Have driven by just about everyday and never stopped in. I'm from wester NY state and we have a lot of really good greek diners. While I don't think it's as good as WNY, the food was pretty good. We had a gyro platter and a gyro sandwich; the meat was just right, the greek salad and rice pilaf that came with meal were both good. They have plenty of American food, burgers, wings etc etc. They even have greek beer. I will go back again, it's been added to our list.
google avatar

Susan P.

Yelp
Fun, eclectic menu. Gyro was tender and not over salted. It had flavor-- with the right balance of salt. The Greek salad was delish. The small is good for lunch, the larger one was larger and I took my left over home and enjoyed it at dinner. Get the fries. They aren't included but worth the slight up charge. They were cool holding the feta cheese -- as my kids can't do dairy. Worth the drive and located close to Publix and Winn Dixie and Fresh Market. So worth the drive alone, but also close to the grocery-- making it worth the trip off the island!
google avatar

NeNe C.

Yelp
I've been going here for close to 25 years. It is always consistently good. The staff is pleasant & service is fairly fast. I've had a little of almost everything & it's all delish. My favorite is the gyro sandwich & lemon chicken n rice soup. Over the years, the taste has never changed. Which is good because that's why I keep going back. No one messing with a good recipe.
google avatar

Coty S.

Yelp
I must be picky about Greek food, but this place was not very good. To be honest, the best thing was their cheese sticks, which is pretty hard to mess up. Served with a side of cold Ragu brand sauce. Who doesn't love deep fried cheese? The gyro platter was bland and the other items we ordered were so mediocre that I cannot even remember them. Most of the items were prefab, so saying that it tasted homemade or was home cooking would be far from accurate. Great family atmosphere and there were many locals. But, McDonalds gets crowded, too. Is there anywhere in Bradenton to get decent Greek food? Or do I have to drive all the way to Sarasota? Next time I am starving and happen to be stuck on Manatee Ave, I will just go across the street to Five Guys and support the chain, because at least their fries are made from scratch. Fountain Court Restaurant is also another decent option across Manatee Ave. that has Italian food that did taste homemade and was surprisingly good.
google avatar

Loe M.

Yelp
This used to be a great place to go for lunch but over the years it has dropped in value and in the quality and quantity of food they seem to be using old food and try to heat it up and you can tell the difference today I was served Burnt soup and I had to send it back and I ordered the spinach pie spanakopita and it definitely tasted like it was old and it wasn't crispy it was more soggy and soft philo pastry should be light and crisp the owner came and asked me if I wanted her to crisp it up again and I said no because you can't do that with Philo and she said she does it all the time which means they have an issue with this food Because you shouldn't have to send it back in the first place so that will be my last time going to this place won't waste my time money or energy on poor food quality and ownership that doesn't appreciate the customers
