NYC New Restaurant Openings, February 2024 | Eater NY

"I tried notes on Omakaseed, a 10-seat counter in Midtown’s Sanctuary Hotel offering a vegan omakase from the Sushi by Bou owners with an 11-course tasting menu for $60 (or a longer version for $100) that includes dishes like watermelon tartare, banana three ways, and lentil caviar." - Emma Orlow

Google
This place is such a hidden gem. I’ve been here twice and both times I was completely blown away by the quality of the food. As a seasoned sushi lover who had been to some of the best Michelin 3-star spots in Tokyo, I think this place is truly in the top tier in NYC in terms of the ingredients used, the curation, and the unbeatable $88 price for an omakase. I recommend this place to everyone.

Google
Very nice experience. The chef was very friendly and attentive. The food was unlike any nigiri we've ever had. The service was solid from beginning to end. I was debating doing a second reservation before leaving the city but I will postpone it until our next visit. Highly recommend.

Google
5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Omakase 33 is pure magic. From the moment I walked in, I felt like I’d stepped straight into Japan — the atmosphere, the precision, the quiet grace. Every piece was a work of art: perfectly balanced, melt-in-your-mouth fresh, and served with genuine care. The Uni, The Caviar, everything I couldn't stop eating! It’s not just dinner, it’s an experience — authentic, intimate, and unforgettable. A true taste of Japan right here in the city.

Google
I had the pleasure of dining here with a few friends while visiting the city, and the omakase experience was nothing short of exceptional. Each course was thoughtfully curated and beautifully presented, showcasing both artistry and flavor. The staff were not only professional and attentive but also warm and knowledgeable, which elevated the entire experience. For a 17-course dinner, the price point is remarkably reasonable, making this an outstanding value for the quality offered. If you’re seeking an intimate, refined dining experience, I highly recommend making this a stop on your visit.

Google
Walking in there the smell reminded me of an authentic Japanese restaurant. The staff was great and very attentive but the food was even better. Each dish tasted great and the donburi appetizer was one of my favorites.

Google
A stunning space, from the design choices, to how sparkling clean it was. The food was incredible, there wasn't one roll we didn't like. Definitely a great date spot for foodies. If you're in the area do NOT sleep on this place!!

Google
I had a great time with friends here. The Omakase was good value, the fish was very fresh and it was varied. The staff was excellent, they accommodated a younger child and treated him really well, making his day.

Google
This was my most memorable restaurant experience by far. Myself and two others came for the lunch course and I couldn’t have enjoyed it more. It is rare for myself to spend more than $30 on a meal, so this was a treat, and it delivered. The chef was so nice and I could tell he really appreciated how much we enjoyed everything he made and that was one of the best parts. Every flavor was unique and so delicious and unlike anything i’ve ever experienced. Fish quality was very good, there wasn’t a single dish we didn’t like. 10/10.

Yelp
Dropped by here for their $50 lunch special and man I cannot overstate how much I enjoyed this spot! Each piece of fish was carefully crafted and paired. I also really enjoyed the non-sushi courses like the soup and the amazing!! mini wagyu bowl (I still think about the presentation and taste of this dish). Honestly one of my favorite value omakase lunch specials and will definitely have to come back! Only con was that we came on a hot day and the AC was not on? Not sure if that was just a one-time thing though.

Yelp
It's hard to find a better lunch deal. I think it was $48 for 12 courses. That's pretty solid, especially in NYC. Starting with an Uni/Wagyu bowl definitely got me excited for the rest to come. It was an app, but I could have eaten a portion much larger. The fish was fresh and I loved that they included my favorites. Scallop, Otoro, Sea Breem, Amber jack... wow. This is what swayed me to want to come back. The meal closed with an aged miso soup. I found this interesting, since soup is generally a starter. I did not get full from the omakase, but I seldom do. Service was very good and attentive. The inside has a large sushi counter and a few tables, and I walked right in at 12:30pm on a weekday when they opened, expecting I might be the only one. Shortly thereafter, the place started to fill up with patrons. The chef did a great job, since he had to manage serving people in a staggered manner, as those of us who arrived earlier were way ahead in the service. They do accept walk-ins, so you don't need a reservation, per say. I would probably make one if I was going for the dinner service. This was still one of the best spots for omakase in NYC and I will come back to it.

Yelp
Holy hell... this Omakase is brilliant. Good value and amazing quality. Just back from Tokyo and this place is comparable to some of the amazing omakase / sushi there. Really great. Had a very engaged chef.... sat at the counter and had the 18 piece dinner $88 omakase. Just right in terms of feeling full / enjoying a wide range of nigiri. Everything had a nice twist... aged miso, homemade ginger, etc. Added the "chef's special" which ended with sprayed gold.... enough said. Super great whiskey / sake options also.

Yelp
I am from Chicago and try to go to Omakase everywhere I go. I have been to Omakase multiple times in NY as well - and this place....... Hands down the best ever. Ever. The ambiance is perfect, calm, classy, professional. Every chef and staff so kind. The sushi- well, amazing. And the art, phenomenal. Interaction with guests amazing. I have now been here twice. Each time perfect. Our chef, Oscar, was amazing.

Yelp
I took a young lady here for our first date, and the Sushi here was next level. Top tier, this was Unlike anything I have ever experienced, the Chef was really nice, and extremely talented. The wait staff was great as well! The atmosphere was incredible, all the decor, it was calm and chill. Me and my date had a wonderful time! Would definitely recommend, and return.

Yelp
Came here again for Friday lunch and the food was leaning mediocre this time. Updating to 4 stars because the first time was great but probably won't be back because of the inconsistency

Yelp
Okay. Listen up. If you're looking for a fire omakase meal during lunch, this is your spot. $48 for 12 courses? STEAL. The quality? Elite. The service? Impeccable. The ambiance? Classy. I don't know what to even say besides come try this place!! Each piece was delicious and perfectly balanced. The chef was quiet but attentive, and the pacing was spot-on -- no rush, no lag. It felt like they respected your time but also wanted you to enjoy each bite fully. The space itself is minimalist but warm, which I loved. No distractions, just a peaceful sushi counter experience that feels elevated but still approachable. Check them out!

Yelp
A pretty modern twist to Omakaze with some unique flavors! I loved the ikura that was soaked with sweet soy and kanpachi with homemade chili crisps! So delicious and amazing. I absolutely loved the whole ginger for palette cleansers. The semi sweet miso was a great closer. I definitely recommend and would come back again!
google avatar

Julia L.

Yelp
Really enjoyed this omakase! It's not too busy like other more popular omakase spots, which I really liked. I wish they had a menu of all the pieces, but other than that, no complaints. I'll definitely be coming back to try the lunch omakase!
google avatar

Yelp
Unbelievable omakase experience. This is one of the best deals i've seen for omakase. This place is authentic and had a nice quiet comfortable atmosphere. It was 17 courses (including soup, ice cream and an appetizer) for $88. The also had a bottle of wine for $45. We sat at the counter and the chef explained each course to us in detail. I would definitely come back here in the future.

Yelp
I live very close to this restaurant and was excited to see an omakase place so close to home. I have been here twice now, once for lunch and once for dinner. I think the lunch omakase is overall a great deal and portioned appropriately. You get appetizers, 8 pieces of nigiri, a hand roll, and miso soup for $48. The fish was all fresh and I liked the level of seasoning. I didn't leave feeling hungry and had good interactions with the sushi chef. The dinner I was less impressed with. For $88 you get a very similar meal but with 5 extra pieces of nigiri. The sushi chef was different this time around. I thought a lot of the pieces were actually under seasoned and the fish was cut very thin. I would give the dinner omakase only 3 stars. Not a bad deal but I've been to better for a similar price (under $100). So overall, a somewhat mixed experience but either way I am glad to see more sushi options in the Kips Bay and Murray Hill area.

Yelp
My soulmate and I decided to have a date night at this place. Glad I decided to do a search for something in the Kips Bay area. Omakase 33 has excellent service, great decor, and delicious courses. They have been open for about a year. Perfect place to have a meal before a movie. We'll be back!

Yelp
Another one of those Chinese-run omakase places in the city. I like these places for their affordability and convenience - food is usually served more quickly than at traditional omakase places. This place is quite a bit cheaper than other Chinese-run omakase places in my nabe, so I gave it a shot. The seafood ingredients used were mostly okay, but the rice was dry and hard, and tasted like overnight rice. Luckily the rice pieces were small, but honestly they should pay more attention to the rice quality. Service was good and the sushi chef was chatty. They did not try to upsell as we just got the standard omakase set and didn't get any extra nigiri.

Yelp
Neighborhood So happy we went here. High quality fish. Sweet price. We loved it and added on extras Didn't know this is a part of the Omakase Shiro group. Sushi chef was so friendly as well. You can also order beer which I thought was a nice

Yelp
Had a lovely experience here. I remember when this location was a very different restaurant over ten years ago. So, it was pleasant to discover a nicely renovated space. I had the great luck to have an essentially private seating and appreciated all of the attention to detail. The host had lots of suggestions and insight into customer favorites and the chef was kind. I loved the appetizers in the beginning! Excited to come back for a dinner seating sometime.

Yelp
Yumyumyumyum. I want to preface by saying that this is my first experience with a sub $100 omakase in the states, so my scale might be a bit off. But the omakase here was really good! Pretty on par with more expensive omakases I've had. When my friends and I arrived for dinner, we were the first party there. The sushi chef immediately started prepping our fish. We started with a smoky rice bowl (bite?). Rice was seasoned well, uni was creamy, beef gave a nice bite. All the nigiri's were delicious! I especially enjoyed the salmon with house made mayo, the hotate, the otoro with caviar, the wagyu, and the unagi. Rice is pre seasoned so there's no need to dip in soy sauce. The proportion of rice to fish was fair. And the amount of wasabi was just enough. Not too overpowering. I loved the house made ginger as well! Overall, my experience here was really good! The sushi chef was nice and answered all of our random questions haha

Yelp
A newer spot in the Kips Bay area serving up delicious omakase -- the ambiance is really nice and it's definitely a bit more upscale than some of the other omakases I've been to in the city, but worth it IMO. I'd recommend for a date night or for a smaller group. They serve really traditional nigiri, with the only flavors being the fish, soy sauce and wasabi. The nigiri was all very fresh and they have toppings and seasonings that are all house-made. My favorite bite was definitely the Tuna! The sushi chef was an absolute delight -- he was so patient and took the time to explain everything, hands-down the best omakase chef I've ever experienced. I had a really nice time here, would recommend!

Yelp
I am sooooo glad my boyfriend booked this for my birthday (he picked it off my want to go list). The service was excellent! The manager/owner (I am unsure) was very welcoming. He kept referring to us using our names which made the experience more memorable and checked in every once in a while to make sure everything was ok. The food itself was spectacular every course was interesting and different. We would recommend adding the oyster shot!!! Very flavorful!!!! They are part of the Omakase Shihou chain (changed the name to 33 because people kept confusing this location with another restaurant out of the state) which we will definitely try out. So if you are looking for affordable omakase with a great experience I would 100% recommend this place.

Yelp
There are very few places (if any) where you can find an omakase for less than $50. From the reviews I was worried the fish wouldn't be omakase quality - but it indeed is and I could book a reservation last minute. The chef is passionate about the dishes and the service is solid. Price to quality ratio is great.

Yelp
Neighborhood spot ive been wanting to try for a while and was happy to get a reservation. Kind of a hidden gem in the area as I didnt realize it was in my neighborhood until recently. The staff was very warm and welcoming and we had a great time chatting with the chef as he prepared each of our courses. The restaurant itself is nicely decorated, quiet, and has an elegant but not overstated vibe. Overall the omakase is good, the price for dinner is a little high compared to other similar spots, but it is certainly reasonable. I will definitely be back for their lunch special which seems like a really good deal!

Norm M.

Yelp
Amazing variety of flavors in a very relaxing atmosphere. Great service. Tried some new items which were fantastic. This is why you go out for Sushi...
google avatar

Lana N.

Yelp
Pretty great omakase for the price! We went for lunch where it's only $48/12 pieces and were the only ones there, so the chef was engaging quite a bit with us. The space has lots of seats and is denied a bigger omakase restaurant.
google avatar

Megana V.

Yelp
3.5/5 - saw this new omakase opened up and wanted to give it a try. For the amount of food/courses, it is the most affordable place in the city - $48 pp for 12+ courses. We went when it was fairly empty, and the chef was fun and chatty. Some of the pieces felt a bit fishy, hence the lower rating, but overall was pretty good.

Yelp
I made my way to Omakase 33 to celebrate a friend's birthday. I was super excited to try this place as I've seen a handful of good reviews. Upon stepping foot into the restaurant, I was severely disappointed. The lighting and the seating arrangements threw me off. The environment as a whole seemed quite bland, while I had seen how picturesque the establishment looked online. What drew me to this place was the price. It seems like such a steal, $48 for about 15 courses. Much to my dismay, the ambiance and the quality of each piece was just a let down. I felt that each piece tasted warm which added to my unsettling feeling. The only positive impression I had with this experience was the chef. He seemed attentive and perhaps could even sense my dissatisfaction. The friends I went with agreed that the chef left the best impression. (This is entirely just my opinion)

Yelp
Every piece of sushi was amazing flavorful perfect amount of rice and fish ratio. The chef was so nice. The service was amazing. Beautiful.

Robert B.

Yelp
Great place-chef had great info on fish and waitress went beyond expectations. Recommend it to anyone looking for good omakase

Dorothy Y.

Yelp
Yesterday, with a reservation, I had 12:30 lunch omakase at Omakase 33. With a couple of small glitches, I have to say the sushi was outstanding - best I've ever had. Each piece was flavorful and melted in my mouth. For $48 they serve 2 appetizers, 8 pieces of nigiri, a hand roll and red miso soup. Other than 2 other people who came in and sat at the counter, I was the only customer; but I assume they get busy at night. I started out with a small hot sake ($13). The large hot sake was $28; so I opted against that. Kind of expensive but, I guess, since their sushi is reasonable, they have to make their money somehow. In comparison, I was early; so I stopped by Phoshime a couple doors down the block and had a large hot sake for $7.50. The only 2 glitches were: in one of the mixed appetizers (very tasty) one of the fish was a little difficult to chew. The second glitch was the mini Ikura piece (I've had better), but this was minor in comparison to the delight of the rest of the meal. The red miso soup at the end was delicious and a great final touch. This was exactly the right amount of food to be full, but not stuffed. The service was excellent, and the entire meal took only 40 minutes. This was my 2nd experience having omakase, and it won't be my last. I definitely want to return. Although I recognized some of the fish, other pieces I didn't recognize because, even though the server and the sushi chef briefly explained what they were, I found it very difficult to understand them; so I just wolfed down the food and enjoyed. My first excuse of an omakase experience was at Kissaki on Columbus Avenue (now closed), and it was a disaster. I was so pleased with my 2nd experience at Omakase 33. Although I have eaten sushi for years, I'm new to the omakase scene, and Omakase 33 has definitely convinced me that, whenever affordable, omakase is the way to go.

Jennifer L.

Yelp
Wonderful Omakase in Murray Hill. They have reservations available for lunch/dinner with the set respectively $48/$88. It was artistry to watch the chef at the bar prepare every piece. Each piece was more delicious than the last. The service was excellent with drinks being replenished at the appropriate time. Perfect spot for an intimate date. Will definitely be returning.

Julien S.

Yelp
The tasting menu was excellent and the chefs very friendly! They accommodated dietary preferences, not just restrictions. There could have been a bit more food to eat though.
google avatar

Ian W.

Yelp
This is a solid Omakase option for the local neighborhood. Omakase spots are opening up left and right and some of them Are just offering basic sushi at a more expensive price. Not Omakase 33. Their offering is good, reasonably priced and will leave you wanting more. You will likely need to order more than they offer you to leave full but it's a very good option for an Omakase dinner.

Waner Z.

Yelp
2nd time went back here. The experience was incredible !! My friend and I love it and will definitely come back to try dinner next time. Highly recommended
google avatar

Clark B.

Yelp
The seafood is tasty and salty they service was good but slow. A nice place to sit out for a date.
google avatar

Nandiya A.

Yelp
$48/person omakase sounds like a steal, however this meal was worth much less. The rice was inconsistent and overly seasoned. Everything was way too salty. It started off well until the marinated lean tuna came out. Salt on salt. The pieces progressively became worse. Finally, the fatty tuna came out, in pieces. This restaurant is in dire need of quality control. The overall service and ambiance was still attentive and friendly. Unfortunately, it doesn't make up for the lackluster food.

Aryn T.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I stopped in for lunch on a whim and had an incredible time! The service was incredible. Our waitress, Amelia, was very attentive and went out of her way to make sure we had a great time. She made sure to ask about any allergies and allowed us to swap a few items for those we could eat. The food was excellent, and the chef was very knowledgeable. We will definitely be back!

J L.

Yelp
Wonderful restaurant! The interior is clean and basic. Long counter where you can sit or mostly 2 person tables along the wall. There is one area at the entrance with a table that can accommodate 6. We had the dinner omakase and it was great experience. Nothing tasted fishy and there were great flavors. The restaurant was full and there was a wait for walk-ins. At this price point, it will be hard for other restaurants to beat it. One thing that could be improved was that it was difficult to understand what the servers were saying due to their accents when they explained the courses as they came out. We would return in the future.

Noriel V.

Yelp
The entire meal was incredible, but the salmon with the homemade mayo, torched, and then topped with some red stuff and scallions is one of the greatest single bites of food I've ever had in my life. Recommend bar service to be able to talk to the sushiya. They might gift you with extra samples of ingredients you like.

Shirley G.

Yelp
It's worth the price of $48 12 courses. Toro belly and King Salmon were the best and miso soup was the least of all. If you have not attempt any omakase, this would be the best place to try as a beginner. However for myself, I wouldn't return as there are much better options in NYC.

Amy W.

Yelp
so yummy! great experience and service was very nice. the sushi was unique and the lunch courses were very tasty.

Serafim K.

Yelp
Riden was amazing, everything fresh and delicious, very clean. Every bite was carefully constructed.
