Yelp
Another place that was a little hard to find, mostly because the GPS was iffy. Upon coming in, it's a very small place, which isn't a bad thing, just something I noted. We got seated without a reservation. Before they ask you what you'd like to drink, they bring you cucumber flavored water. Personally, I wasn't a big fan of it. I just wanted regular water. I get the fancy uplifted experience, but that was not a nice surprise to taste. Looking at the menu, the server was very nice and answered all of our questions, super accommodating. Their fish is flown in from Japan once a week. Usually, asking for substitutions or something to be nixed off an item is kind of a hassle, but here, it was pretty easy. My boyfriend ordered the spicy king crab roll with nothing but the cream cheese and the crab. Unfortunately, I don't think the waitress heard me or remembered right, because he was brought out a regular king crab roll. Nothing about it was spicy. I didn't feel like it was a big enough loss to ask for it to be sent back. The crab was super flavorful! Eating in Kentucky, he doesn't feel like he ever had fish that felt that fresh. It was real crab, it had an amazing sweet but umami taste. Very good! My spicy bluefin tuna roll was amazing, no complaints from me. The quality of the fish once again came through. When the server came back around, we asked for some nigiri. I got the maguro. My boyfriend is usually a fan of shrimp nigiri, so he ordered the Canadian sweet shrimp. It should be noted that amaebi and ebi are not the same, which he knew to some degree, but he didn't expect it. It came out presented very nicely, as everything else has been. It took the cake. The taste. He has never had sweet shrimp before this. At first, the flavor was enjoyable, it was smokey and was reminiscent of a beef jerky he loved as a child. However, it was such a big piece of shrimp that he had to seriously chew. The longer he chewed, the more you get these fruity notes. As someone who doesn't enjoy savory and sweet, it didn't bode well for him. It also had a creamy texture and taste, which he wasn't expecting. When the waitress came back around, she noted that most people don't enjoy it for its sliminess, so that was likely the root. Overall, the atmosphere, the presentation of the dishes, the freshness and flavor is pique! The best testing sushi I've had for a long time. The only demerit is the portion sizing. 9 dollars for one very tiny piece of nigiri, which was very shocking to me. I understand that this is an upscale place and it's obviously going to have a higher price point, but at the same time, even the most expensive sushi places I've been will still give you a little more for your money. It felt like Omakase really didn't. I feel like there could be a balance between quality and quantity. We didn't get to order dessert. The price point to quantity knocks off one star. Shoutout to the ice cream place that directed us to this restaurant.
