A quick caveat ... if you are coming here to get a bonified resort experience ... you may want to consider coming post-covid. We were supposed to be in Italy this fall but microbes had a different plan, so now that travel is less restricted in the US, we decided to head to Mount Washington Resort, which has always been on our bucket list of swanky grand dame hotels to visit.
First impression ... is the movie 'The Shining' ... an almost unbelievably (for the area) grand and vintage looking white resort with red roof highlighted against a snow capped mountain. You drive through some beautiful scenic roads (we came in mid-October and missed peak by about 2 weeks ... leaves were 50% gone due to a wind storm.) until you take a few turns off the highway and pass several closed up shops ... and one gas station/old fashioned general store advertising cold beer and night crawlers on the same sign. Stock up on your beer, chips and snacks here because food options are few and far between at the resort if you haven't made reservations in advance.
The resort itself is beautiful ... like something from a bygone era. Disney reportedly used The Hotel Del in Coronado, CA as an influence for their flagship resort, The Grand Floridian. However, it feels more like The Mount Washington Resort inside. It's grand on a 1920's scale and you are transported back into time after walking into the lobby. Unfortunately the seating areas are chained off (it's a white chain, so I guess classier than metal) but it's still beautiful to soak in. You make it to the front desk's plexiglass and masked 20-something year old staff and you'll be checked in.
Know this ... the restaurants book up for reservations, so make them in advance. We saw more than a few guest FREAK OUTS about this ... literally, if you put someone in a tiny $500/night room and then tell them they'll have to eat out of a cardboard box the entire time they are there ... get ready for some 'Karen fireworks'. Luckily, we made our reservation for the main dining room. The first night, we were on our own for food and ate $16 burgers and $14 hummus dip out of a box in our room.
The weather did not cooperate ... two days of chilly rain. We didn't even see the mountains until the day we were leaving due to the fog and clouds. Thankfully, I spoke to a VERY helpful staffer in advance, Rachel, who for $100 per night upgraded our standard room to the Princess Caroline Room. It had a fireplace, a 4-poster bed and enough space to walk around. As we checked out, we walked down the hall and saw the maid cleaning a standard room, which looked to be the size of a West Hollywood closet and we are seriously considering nominating Rachel for sainthood. Our room was the highlight of the trip. (Despite the tales of haunting, we saw no ghosts, other than one of the side-tables whose drawer magically opened on its own. More likely an uneven floor than the ghost of a NH socialite.)
The staff here is VERY helpful and likely underappreciated as I am sure they get their fair share of bitching and complaining about the covid-era restrictions. No sitting in the lobby, few dining options, no spa during the week, no room service, gondola rides on weekend only, no heated outdoor pool, no tours of the property and all these restrictions come with a $35 per day 'resort fee'. Yeah ... no. Thankfully, they waived it upon request.
We did walk around the property and there is a fantastic not-to-be missed trail which leads along the golf course into the woods and past a winding river ending up at a natural basin/waterfall. Well worth it! We passed on horseback riding after seeing a carriage riding through a parking lot ... but I did fit in a chilly round of golf. We ate at the main dining room ... the food was average ... sort of like wedding food. My chicken was incredibly dry and chewy, her pork cutlet was covered in salty gravy. Dessert (bourbon sticky toffee pudding) was the star of the show and much appreciated after two days of mediocre food.
The biggest advice I'd give the hotel ... they NEED to invest in an app for guests! To say that ordering lunch from Stickney's Pub (the only restaurant or bar open in the afternoon) was insanity would be an understatement. There is a line which snakes down a narrow hallway. Folks in this line are either ... waiting to check in or make reservations, waiting to put an order in at the bar ... or waiting to order a drink from the bar. No order, no information and NO SOCIAL DISTANCING! The bar is a free for all with people waiting for orders, ordering a drink or trying to order food. It's like spring break at happy hour. When you do order, you then have to snake your way through this again, get the bartender's attention and pick up your bag.
Overall, it was a fun stay because our room was so great, we didn't need to leave much. If we were in a small room and wanting a true 'resort' feel, we would likely wait until things were back to normal. The property is beautiful!
