Yelp
On the Alley is a great casual eatery on the Santa Barbara Harbor, the lazy little sister of the popular Brophy Bros., where you can usually expect a long wait for a table. It's a take-out joint with communal outdoor seating if you need it, and the harbor provides ample entertainment if you happen to come with children. Service is friendly and efficient, and you can be in and out about as fast as you can eat.
The menu is pretty extensive, with breakfast items all day as well as a nice spread of burgers, sandwiches, and options for kids. You can get Brophy Bros. fish and chips and chowder, and you can even have them with alcohol--not even just beer and wine, but an actual bloody mary.
I haven't yet had the pleasure, as I've only come here pregnant, but I can whole-heartedly recommend the Baja fish and shrimp tacos. The Baja fish comes with crispy, flaky, beer-battered fish as well as avocado, pickled onion, queso fresco and salsa blanca. The shrimp taco tops plump, snappy grilled shrimp with ponzu slaw, mango relish, queso fresco, and salsa blanca. (You can also get a Baja-style shrimp taco if that's your preference.) Both tacos are messy and delicious, with plenty of flavor and a nice combination of textures. They also come with some excellent fresh tortilla chips.
I've had a lot of mediocre fish and shrimp tacos over the years, several of them at non-Mexican joints in Santa Barbara. I'm happy to know I can get good ones at On the Alley, and I look forward to my next visit.
