Yelp
What do Da Legna, Sally's, Pepe's, and Modern have in common? They are all celebrated New Haven pizzerias.
Anyway, a few months ago, one of my students was raving about another New Haven pizza parlor, but I was unfamiliar with that one. So that's the reason our party of three had an amazing experience at One 6 Three (as in 163 Foster Street) yesterday.
It's not as big as the four I mentioned, it's more like a small neighborhood joint smack in the middle of a residential neighborhood with maybe half a dozen booths inside and and seating for a dozen outside.
As we sat in a corner booth we were struck by three things- the depth of their menu, the cool wall of hand signed firewood pieces, and the super nice staff- I mean all of them were fantastic.
Their menu kicks off with seven shareables "for the table"- so think wings, meatballs, fries, mac and cheese, fried pickles, etc.
Next is a trio of bacon accented dishes - Brussels sprouts, hush puppies, and good old sugar rubbed bacon slabs.
Next up are two salads and twelve sandwiches (four of which are veggie).
But the star of the show at One 6 Three is pizza -pizza in every combination and permutation known to man. They offer thirteen meat pizzas including some unusual ones, like "The King" with peanut sauce and jam, "Breaking My Sweetballs" with meatballs, ricotta, hot cherry peppers, and drizzled honey, and "Sweet & Salami" with genoa salami, hot cherry peppers, and drizzled honey.
Not a meat eater? No worries, they have seven vegetarian pizzas including "The Goat" with sautéed asparagus, caramelized onions, honey goat cheese, and cranberry-honey jam, and "Fungus Among Us" with sautéed mushrooms, wood-fired garlic cloves, herbed ricotta, mozzarella & truffle oil.
The Pescatarians in your group won't be left out because One 6 Three offers five seafood pizzas with varieties that include shrimp and clams.
Pizzas can be ordered in personal, small, and large sizes.
We went with three thin crusted personal pizza beauties - one with meatballs ($7), a Fungus Among Us ($10), and for me -- a made to order creation with clams, shrimps and hot peppers ($10).
My pizza was outstanding with everything you want on a pizza. Great thin crust, great tomato sauce, great cheese and great toppings. I was surprised at how big the yummy chunks of shrimp were. They weren't diced up like the clams and hot peppers.
Now unless you are super hungry, you won't finish your personal pizza, because none if us did. So for your $7 or $10, you'll be taking home leftovers.
We loved everything about One 6 Three.
Go check it out.
