"Cheese" pie review: Cash only. Ordered 16" pie, "well done."
The cheese (a mix of aged and fresh mozz' with some parmesan for garnish) was "fine," but lacked notes of sharpness. The richness was there.
The tomato sauce was dull tasting but not bad (not as dislikeable as Mac's). The dough under the cheese was a bit under-done but since the underside was beautfully crisp (and amazingly no char anywhere), the contrast was very tolerable.
The best part of the pie, in my opinion, was that, astonishingly, there was no charring (perhaps appealing to the health-conscious), yet the dough is beautifully crisp, as if it was fried (but not at all greasy). Not as light/airy as Mac's Pizza's dough, but the crispness with the lack of char is noteworthingly very impressive.
It is also important to note that almost weekly, they have new pizzas on the menu, which is unheard of. Definitely worth trying of their other pies with more pungent taste profiles.
'North Of Brooklyn' used to have new pies regularly, but only monthly.
I highly appreciate how ONO Pizza doesn't advertise their pizza as any "type" or style of pizza. Likewise with Mac's Pizza and Mark's Pizza. It's like part of a new wave of Canadian/Toronto pizza.
Definitely a must visit if in this pizza-starved neighbourhood, off the Danforth, and are seeking a contemporary, New-World/Canadian/Toronto pizza. Highly recommend getting it "well done."
