Onion City Chicken & Oyster

I thoroughly enjoyed my meal here start to finish on a snowy February night. Love the overall vibe, service was seamless and excellent, the food was delicious! I appreciate a restaurant who makes crushes the main dishes but also makes memorable and flavorful sides. For example, we got the lobster roll with a side salad and the 1/2 chicken. Both were phenomenal as expected but the perfectly dressed salad, fresh warm biscuits, and collard greens just knocked it out of the park. Oysters were fresh and delightful and paired perfectly with a bottle of wine, 10% off on wine Wednesdays. Woo! We will be back.

We had dinner at onion city for my birthday this past October (like 4 days ago). We were greeted quickly and seated. We ordered a whiskey sours and wine while we scanned the menu. I ordered a bowl of clam chowder as an appetizer, which was buttery and delightful. Dinner was a lobster roll and fish and chips. Lobster was tender and not overly dressed. Fish was lightly breaded and not over done. Staff were great, delightful and attentive. Environment is clean and cozy. Overall, had a great time. Highly recommended. We look forward to out next visit for the fried chicken sandwich. It’s got quite the reputation…. A great one. Check out Onion City. Well worth it.

One of the best places near Burlington I’ve found. We’ve been here four times already and find no reason to stop coming back. The oysters are fresh and delicious. Expect a slightly less expansive spread if you’re going during their 2$ 4-5pm oyster happy hour. Elsewhere you will pay more but sometimes get a wider variety. The drinks and service are top notch. The shellfish is delicious. The fried chicken is mind blowing in the rare event you’re still hungry after the oysters and (very good) sides. For those in the know, this is pretty much all the best parts of Misery Loves Company. Strongly recommended.

Have eaten here half a dozen times, and each experience is more disappointing than the time before. Dined here on New Years Eve, seated at an extremely small table inches from the bathroom. Our server didn’t put our drinks in and we didn’t receive them until nearly half an hour after we sat. Appetizers were food (beignets and shrimp cocktail). My companion was offered a drink refill which was also forgotten, and I never was. Ordered their signature item, the fried chicken, which comes family style, and was overcooked and the skin was charred. The table was entirely too small for the amount of plates and dishes and felt like trying to dine in an airplane tray table. Server never checked in to aam how things were. Ordered dessert, which was fine - carrot cake for me (tasted like Funfetti, no carrot flavor or texture elements) and mousse for my date. Bill was nearly $200 for a disappointing meal and experience. The first time I went, seated at a much bigger table, the food was well prepared and the service was attentive - but each time since then the experience has been disappointing.

The oysters were fresh and delicious! We then ordered the family fried chicken with an assortment of 5 sides. I wish I had the talent of a food critic to describe how fabulous this meal was. The best fried chicken ever and from Vermont farm! The sides went perfectly with the chicken and the potato salad was great! Very attentive staff and the atmosphere was very nice! Great value for the high quality of the food. Thank you for making our anniversary dinner one to remember.

Excellent dining experience friendly staff Excellent atmosphere and aesthetic. Food was spot on we started with savory cheddar beignets that were absolutely Dynamite! Excellent cocktails and are entrees did not disappoint whatsoever! Looking forward to coming again soon!!!

We had their oysters and loved them. Then we had a full chicken. The skin on the fried chicken was very bland. It had no flavor or spices at all. The meat was at least moist. The biscuits were very dry and bland as well. Did not care for the baked beans or the potato salad. Went to this establishment due to such high reviews. I was very disappointed and the chicken is not cheap. I would personally not recommend this place to my friends.

I ordered fish n chips and clam chowder. The chowder was tasty, but nothing noteworthy. Highly disappointed in the fish n chips. The fish was measley pieces… super thin and merely tossed in flour before frying. Yuk. No color and not much taste. The tartar sauce saved the meal. I guess I should have read the menu closer as the “chips” are actually potato chips, not fries. Very disappointing overall. It was a chilly damp day and the door was open for the breeze to come in and I was sat under a fan. Not a comfortable dining experience.

Fried chicken, oysters, and sparking wine on tap. O.MG. We stopped in before a flight out of town on a yelp recommendation. So glad we did. We came around 3:00 on a Saturday (lucky because I'm sure this place gets packed). We were sat quickly and our server was even quicker to greet us and tell is the specials. My boyfriend got a beer and the wine and cocktail list looked great but I couldn't order anything besides bubbly on tap. Delish. We started with oysters- 6 and the beingets. Bless their baby hearts. So good. Honey butter is amazing and I could have done 12 more oysters easy. We both got the two piece meal with two sides because we were feeling the vibe and knew it was going to be good. My only regret is not ordering more. Get the spicy pickles. Pretty sure I'm going to dream about them. Potato salad is also legit. But the chicken....i can't even. We travel pretty often and agree that this restaurant has really set the bar. The perfect blend of great service, beautiful ambiance, and delicious food. Well done!!! you can read a more detailed, in-depth review of my time at onion city chicken & oyster here: https://simmerwithsally.substack.com/p/restaurant-review-5-onion-city-chicken wow. what a phenomenal spot in the middle of northern vermont! you know that it's something to talk about when i'm still dreaming of the crispy chicken and the honey butter from this spot almost a year after my time there. my boyfriend and i were here last june while we were on our anniversary trip in burlington. my boyfriend and i are fried chicken experts. fried chicken counts almost exclusively as one of his food groups, and i've spent the better part of 2 decades eating good ass korean fried chicken. this definitely ranks up top as some of the best we've both had. the honey butter was also incredibly delectable -- the perfect amount of both honey and butter. the oysters were also incredibly fresh and went down easy! the decor and the service really topped everything off. it felt like we were right at home in *that* cool friend's living space. we can't wait to be back soon!

Wow! From the moment my wife and I walked into Onion City Chicken & Oyster, we were greeted with warm smiles and top-notch service. The staff were super attentive and made us feel right at home with their friendly attitude. The dining room is very cozy and elegant! The cocktail menu was impressive, and each drink we tried was incredibly delicious. It was clear that the bartenders put a lot of thought and care into mixing each one. The food was insanely good. The oysters tasted fresh and were wonderful. I'd say the unexpected star for us had to be the Cheddar Beignets - these little delights were irresistible and unlike anything we've had before. My wife and I are already looking forward to our next visit to Onion City Chicken & Oyster. It's rare to find a place that hits all the right notes like this one does. See you again soon!

Amazing service, excellent food, what else can you ask for! I was in Burlington for a business trip, this place had great reviews so i tried it, waitstaff were very friendly and knowledgeable (especially about the variety of oysters!) , they suggested a pickled mustard seed to accompany my raw oysters, I was a little skeptical, but the texture from the seeds gave the oysters a little something extra! I was very impressed with this cute little place and highly recommended it!

Stopped for lunch and what a treat. We started with the oysters which were fresh and flavorful. Crab dip was to die for. My wife had the fried chicken and I had the mussel special with a baguette. Sopping up the broth was the best part. Staff is friendly and super attentive. Highly recommend coming here.

As advertised! Chicken and Oysters were delicious. We were greeted right away, in time for their Early Bird special 4:00-5:00. A dozen yummy oysters for $2 a piece and 2 piece chicken dinner with 2 sides for $20. Chicken was perfectly crispy. Biscuits crumbled and melted in your mouth. Honey butter and hot sauce paired beautifully with the chicken and biscuits. Collard greens were textbook, excellent. Service was nice, space was cozy. Casual vibe. They've been open about a year. Recommend. Enjoy!

I'd been wanting to try this place since it opened and was glad I finally did! Even though it's a small menu, it was still hard to decide because everything sounded great. I settled on cheddar beignets and fish and crisps, which I did not regret. There's a great cocktail list, as well. Staff was friendly and service was quick. I loved the decor inside, especially the little bar towards the back. I can't wait until my next visit!

The fried chicken is honestly the best I've had in the state. Whenever my bf and I are itching for some chicken, the half bird and 3 sides are easily 2 meals each of us (we're leftover people).

You don't find restaurants like this very often. Very welcoming staff, wonderful and creative dishes, as well as a very relaxed and home-like environment. It is THE spot if you're looking for a nice, affordable date night. My girlfriend and I stumbled upon this joint and we were very pleasantly surprised with the outcome. Wonderful spot and we will definitely be visiting again!

Fun ambiance and vibe, delicious food, friendly prompt service. This is a gem, will have to come back next time I'm in town.

The food here is a little pricey but very delicious. The cheddar begnets are incredible.

A Sister company of Misery Loves Co. Just around the block, which specializes in Breakfast, Brunch, and Lunch. Onion City Chicken and Oyster accommodates a dinner crowd with an elegant menu. The huge Butter Honey Wings were to die for.

Had lunch here. It was so good, I decided to come back for dinner. Excellent food. The staff was kind, helpful. Food came at the perfect time- not too early, not too late. Very relaxing environment/music. Great for anyone looking for a night out with good conversation with friends. Exactly what I needed. Also, a great selection of canned/tap beers and a wide variety of cocktails.

Food was great - just what we were looking for on a lazy Sunday afternoon. My adult daughter, her 3 yo son and I split a dozen raw oysters and warm crab dip. Grandson enjoyed several oysters and a hotdog. We adults enjoyed some wine and a cocktail. Our waiter was engaging, very well versed in their offerings and efficient. It was a perfect combination and I look forward to visiting again soon. I would recommend perhaps sitting away from the door as this time of year it was a little chilly sitting in the front of the house. I will warn patrons who need to park a vehicle, search out on street parking. DO NOT park in the lot across Main Street adjacent to 4 Quarters Brewery. The parking there is convenient for sure but beware it's $6 per hr and they do not provide any grace period. 3 mins after my 1 hr time expired they issued me a $63 ticket!! On a Sunday at 2:45 pm. "Pay in 3 days = 33% discount, pay after 3 days = full fine amount, pay after 30 days = fine amount doubles" I appealed to UPPVermont, the owner or operator (?) of the lot via email and they graciously provided me a one time courtesy and voided the exorbitant fine. I won't make that mistake again and hope no one else does either. But.....absolutely give Onion City Chicken and Oysters a try!!

Amazing food and drinks! Definitely recommend the Bee-Haw drink!! Also, the honey butter dip was out of this world!!

This place is an absolute gem. We had a party of 6 and were able to call ahead and get on the waitlist very easily on a Saturday night. The place is casual but classy at the same time - very warm and inviting. The service was incredible - our waitress Ali B was so helpful and attentive. The chicken was delicious and we loved the biscuits + honey butter and spicy pickles side. The hot dog was great too. Ditch your reservation on church st. and head to Onion City!

Across the board great service and great food. Cocktails are everything. And food is consistently delicious. I'm addicted. My place for when I feel like I want to reward myself, because a great experience is a guarantee. Oh and great tunes too.

Best Fried Chicken in the whole of New England and quite possibly the Universe!!! Service is A+ and the Ambiance is is perfect for date night or a Birthday Bash!!!

We had an awful experience at this restaurant. The cheddar beignets came out covered in grease, like a pool of grease, I guess that was the butter. We waited over 45 min for our food to come. We were there around 3:30 and were the only ones in the place. I will say our waiter kept apologizing, which was the only redeeming quality. We ordered the hot buttered lobster rolls at $36 a piece, which finally came out but were luke warm. It seemed that they must have put them in mayo first and then tried to cover the mistake up with butter. My clam chowder was the last thing to come out, which was so watery and nothing like any New England Clam Chowder I've ever had. To make it worse, I saw the chef bringing the soup into the restaurant right through the front door from across the street. This was so disappointing since their reviews were so great. Unfortunately, even knowing we had a terrible experience, they still charged us full price for our meal with no apologies. I would not recommend.
