Where to Find the Best Sushi Around D.C.

"Owner Ferry Huang made a name for himself running Sushi Keiko, Glover Park’s tried-and-true place for raw fish (which is now an outpost of regional chain Kusshi Sushi). Huang can now be found at Onkei at Western Market, a Foggy Bottom food hall stall sending out vibrant chirashi bowls, small plates, maki rolls, nigiri, and sashimi. Large-scale platters are also available." - Missy Frederick, Tierney Plumb

"Foggy Bottom’s growing Western Market food hall just added a small stall for Japanese comfort foods and bright sashimi platters. Google
I think some the best sushi I’ve had in DC. Great flavor profile, nice portion sizes, and impressive recipes. I’d highly recommend!

Google
The assorted sushi was absolutely disgusting! Never had this bad sushi in my life. Don’t go there!

Google
The food was great, the service was spectacular! I requested the salmon donburi as torched salmon and the chef did just that for me! He was really nice and patient to grill each salmon individually and it tasted amazing. Thank you!

Google
waited 25+ minutes for my 15 pc deluxe sashimi order. didn’t even get 13 pieces. saw workers chopping up my fish without cleaning the knife when altering from cooking different foods. fish was not fresh and gave me food poisoning for a day.

Refused to service a black woman. Racist establishment. Gentlemen pictured was extremely offensive and rude. Did not greet upon arriving, aggressively asked “You going to order” I was shocked at the poor customer service. I politely said “Well Hello” he further aggressively sucked his teeth and said we’re closed. If you’re not white or of Japanese decent this business does not care to service you. Further action is being taken.

Went here Saturday for the cherry blossom festival. I finally recovered from being sick after eating here. Food was lukewarm at best and tasted strange which should have been the first warning something was wrong. That same night my wife and I had severe stomach aches and the next morning we were tag teaming the bathroom for the next couple days. Service was slow, but that’s likely due to the high foot traffic for the festival. I wouldn’t recommend this place. My katsudon didn’t even have the egg and sauce.

Here’s how I rate this ramen Noodles: 7/10 cooked well, good flavor Broth: 6/10 decent flavor Pork: 2/10 tough, chewy, cooked poorly, low quality cut

Google
When placing an order during the lunch rush, they will have anybody making the sushi as it gets so busy. My sushi looked so bad, mangled, and half done that I refused to take one of the roles. I took a photo of the only acceptable looking role as I had waited 30 minutes already, and wanted to have at least anything to eat. It is very unfortunate that they do not have the adequate staff to service all of their customers.

Yelp
Sashimi sushi deluxe is beautifully presented with a nice variety. Chicken katzu bento box is crispy and nice (lots of chicken katsu!). Edamame and simple and good (and more reasonably priced than the same dish at other restaurants). Ordered for self pick up via UberEasts; food was ready quickly and well packaged. It's in that "mall" on GW campus. Convenient location of course. Simple setting but clean: it's inside a "mall" so some tables scattered, with a counter. Not a full on restaurant but I appreciate the Japanese option in the neighborhood of Foggy Bottom.

Yelp
This was my first time at Western Market, and I was in the mood for ramen and sushi, so decided to check this place out. I ordered the Spicy Miso bowl and the spicy tuna crunch roll. The food items were packaged very well - although I ate my food there, it would have traveled nicely as well. As far as the food goes, I think the amount of sushi (8 pieces) received for the price is a decent value. The menu doesn't list what ingredients come with the ramen, and I had a hard time getting that info from the woman at the register. You have the option to get the spicy miso with either chicken or pork - I ordered mine with pork. Overall, both the sushi and ramen were kind of bland, but the spicy miso did have a nice kick to it. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here, but it's not a bad option. I would probably just stick to sushi next time.

Yelp
Situated on GW's campus in Western market with other food stalls! Although Onkei is a bit on the pricier side, it is a great price for the quality of fish you get. I enjoyed the salmon donburi ($18), which comes with miso soup as well as pickled radish, ginger, wasabi, and soy sauce. The cuts of salmon were thick and fresh. Expect a wait, especially during lunch or dinner time! Plenty of seating at their bar and throughout the food court, but it might get full during their peak hours. The market's restrooms are clean and in the back.

Yelp
I visited this place with a mission - to find chopsticks on short notice (which is surprisingly difficult). I felt a little bad about just picking a pair up and leaving so I took a look at the menu as well. Surprisingly, they had a decent selection. Ended up making an unplanned purchase, and the service was impressively quick and efficient. The sushi itself was pretty mediocre with average prices. Kudos to the cashier who wore a mask, ensuring a safe and pleasant experience.

Yelp
Onkei is a little corner spot in western market. It has value prices for value sushi which is honestly okay for students that I am sure frequent the food hall. They also serve $15 bowls of ramen, and a variety of other Japanese dishes. This review is for the sushi and ramen. For the sushi the quality the fish was decent, but the rice seemed to be made with poor quality and little care. The rolls in our sushi and sashimi dish were all super uneven, some pieces with only bits of rice stuck to the seaweed, and super dry. For the sashimi rolls , it seemed like they pre rolled the balls of rice and left it out for a while. It was hard and would not stick together well. it was just all very sad looking, even for a $20 combo. The ramen is okay but the noodles and broth lacked flavor. It was missing the wonderful umani ramen usually has, and the bowls were dressed with ONE piece meat, ONE tiny piece of bamboo, a half hardboiled egg, a tbs of corn, and a few odd pieces of spinach Everything came served in plastic bowls with no option to serve on real plates and bowls, which makes me sad. To be fair, I believe that's every shop in Western Market, which could do better to encourage more sustainable options. While the prices are alright, everything at this place looks like it was thrown together haphazardly to check a box and make money. I also may just be a Japanese food snob at this point so I will know better to choose this Japanese place next time.

Yelp
Super disappointed. I asked my partner to pick me up some delicious ramen and asked that Onkei separate the broth from the dry food (noodles and toppings) because my partner was traveling back from DC to MD and I didn't want soggy noodles. They refused. I got a bowl full of soggy noodles that absorbed most of the broth. There goes my rainy day, soup day! What ramen spot doesn't separate ingredients for take out? Just bad customer service.

Yelp
Great service and food was delicious. Cashier let us switch out the entree in the lunch box for katsu (one chicken one pork). Food came out quickly and area was all very clean and quiet on a Sunday morning.

Yelp
I wanted to much to like this place--so I gave it three tries. Sadly, it's just not very good. I did sashimi and maki twice. First time was fine, second time was a little fishy tasting. And for the price, "fishy" isn't cutting it. $30 without any rice or soup? Since I figured that fish wasn't Onkei's strong suit, I decided to give the other dishes a try. Chicken teriyaki: chopped to bits for some reason, dry, and bland; edamame: served cold... great; vegetable and shrimp tempura: vegetables were somehow mushy, it was all over-battered, and one of my shrimp wasn't deveined. I guess I'm giving two stars rather than one because the staff are kind and thorough. I just wish their pride in their work were spent on more deserving food.

Yelp
I came and ordered the Tantanmen ramen noodles and this has to be the best tasting ramen I have ever had. This bowl was a medium type of spice, and it included the spinach, corn,.half egg, and dry seaweed on the side. For the protein, I selected the chicken. I could have chosen pork or tofu, but chicken has always been my go-to protein whenever its a dish that I am unfamiliar with. The guys working there were definitely on the ball, and they had my order prepared in no time. Even better than the ramen noodles, was the ambiance of the entire place. Its actually a pretty happening food court with outdoor seating, which I where I found a spot. The ramen noodles were wonderful, and I'm going to try to hit this place up again soon!

Yelp
This place is located in the western market, and The Sashimi is exceptionally fresh. I like hamachi belly, and it is super flavorful. Their torched ahi tuna is also pretty good, and the chili oil gives it an extra kick! They also have a Super friendly and humorous staff; I had a great chat with Mr. Alfredo. Most workers here are super flexible, and they are likely to honor the reasonable requests if asked nicely. I tried their tempura sushi rolls the other day, and unlike most places, their shrimp tempura came fresh out of the fryer; it's super crispy. I felt lucky after realizing there was a long queue after getting my food.

Yelp
Fatty yellow tail nigiri, salmon avocado with cilantro roll, and miso soup for a quick lunch. Amazingly fresh! I loved every bite. It's in a food court so not a restaurant experience but perfect for a casual meal.

Yelp
I'm excited to review the spots in the new-ish, we'll-received, Western Market! I've been to Onkei previously, during the extremely busy weekday lunch. Although there's a significant amount of seating in the market, you'll have difficulty getting a spot during the lunch rush. But I love markets of this type. Today, because it was snowing (kinda) it was not so busy. So, my son and I dropped in for Ramen. The ramen here is definitely good. The fixings are right on, the selections are quite sufficient, and the presentation is good. My balanced criticism would be the following: the size is not large enough for the price. And please add more noodles. They're good quality, but fairly scarce. And last but certainly not least - BE NICE! It's customer service! You can use some improvement there. All said, I certainly recommend this place if you're not sure about what's good in the market!

Sun S.

Yelp
I had their pork tonkatsu ramen and I can say that it was the most bland ramen ever. I suspected if they used the package ramens from the grocery store. Ah what a bummer, I had been excited about this new place. I don't think I'd be back.

Y P.

Yelp
This review is strictly for the pork katsudon. Basically, it was not a katsudon. A katsudon by definition is a meat cutlet with egg, sauce, sautéed onions and maybe some veggies depending on the chef. What I got was literally deep fried pork cutlet over white rice and donkatsu sauce on top. If I wanted just meat and rice, this would've been fine but I didn't want that. I wanted a katsudon. Their use of the term "katsudon" is a bit misleading so be aware. I will go back and try other things but not the supposed "katsudon".

Yelp
Came here for lunch today to try something new. It took 30 minutes to do an order of fried noddles. That is unacceptable for a college campus as time us value and I would choose any other places this was way too expensive for what it was
google avatar

Grace R.

Yelp
Ordered sashimi and chicken katsu. The food is great and the sashimi was fresh. It came out quick and the service was great. So glad they opened a Japanese place in this area.

Yelp
New Japanese eatery in the newly repurposed Western Market. Onkei was okay. My tonkotsu ramen didn't have the deepest flavor but it wasn't bad broth wise. My egg was almost completely hard boiled, not runny at all. The main veggie was wood ear mushroom, kind of disappointing. My wife had sushi. She said the sashimi was good. I wouldn't come out of my to eat here but if you happen to be in the area, it's a viable option.

Yelp
Love this place, great spot in western market. Fairly priced for quality. I definitely recommend the katsudon bowls!

Yelp
I've been here many times now because it is consistently good and fresh. Kind service, tasty food, and I love the sushi. This is a nice place to do work, eat with friends, or order takeout! Definitely recommend if you're looking for a quick bite.

Kelsey B.

Yelp
awesome lunch spot. I got a cucumber avocado roll, a salmon roll, and a miso soup for $17. really can't beat it. they also offer a bento box with sashimi, rice, dumplings, and miso soup for under $20 tip: order ahead for lunch on their website. you can use apple pay on your phone. the market gets super busy at lunch so you can save yourself a longer wait by ordering abead

Yelp
Great service, great-er food! Very clean establishment and brand new, definitely recommend this place.
google avatar

Cheng Y.

Yelp
Tried the spicy miso ramen. It was pretty bland and not spicy. The noodles weren't the fresh made ones (probably packaged version). For $15, I expected more.
google avatar

Jennie L.

Yelp
The food was pretty good but the service was great! I got the chicken teriyaki and it was pretty good; it came with a lot of food (plenty of sides) so definitely worth the somewhat higher price range. The people working there were super nice and even helped bag my food when they noticed I was having trouble carrying everything. Would recommend if you're looking for something quick.

Yelp
Good experience and fresh and delicious sushi by chef Alfredo definitely recommend ..

Yelp
Randomly looking for sushi close to me in the dc and man i definitely found the right spot. Service was pretty quick and the sushi was fresh. Five stars.

Jonathan C.

Yelp
Disappointing lunch experience. I had a bento box with sashimi that included rubbery octopus, so-so fish and mediocre side dishes. Expensive to boot, and with unfriendly service.
google avatar

Ian M.

Yelp
I hadn't been on campus in awhile and tried this new spot in western market. Very friendly and attentive staff. The sushi was top notch too! I got sashimi that was as good or better than Tono sushi in woodley park. Highly recommend it.

Yelp
Owner was very nice and food was delicious. Will definitely be going back soon! Prices are super reasonable, and quality was beyond fresh (I saw them cooking and deep frying every part of my order on the spot).

SpaceUnicorn 8.

Yelp
I am a local college student and oh my goodness this place is a life saver. Everyone here is so nice and the food is even better. This is perfect for rainy days or if you just want some savory comfort food. If you have dietary restrictions just ask and they'll be willing to change things to suit your needs. Be sure to tell Alfredo hello and he'll take care of you!

Danielle S.

Yelp
Picked up few sushi rolls and a salad to go... delicious! Sushi was made to order, super fresh and well priced. Plus the gentleman who took my order was super helpful, friendly & hand checked/packed my order himself to ensure everything was as I ordered. Will definitely be returning!

Lee P.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious! We both got the chicken teriyaki which comes with miso soup, salad, dumplings and rice. Everything was prepared perfectly. I will be coming back as soon as possible.

Roan T.

Yelp
This place is dope asf. The people are very nice. Food is incredible. Would definetly recommend the teriyaki salmon bento box and the chirashi. Fully recommend for a quick and delicious bit of sushi.

Devin S.

Yelp
Alfredo made delicious food. Can't wait to.go back. Loved the fresh sushi, and stuff was amazing

Xavier K.

Yelp
The food was better then I expected. The guy Alfredo help me a lot with my choice and was very friendly I felt at home lol I will definitely recommend

Jin H.

Yelp
SO much better than Kin's (which used to be the only casual sushi place on campus). The food is fresher, the kitchen is way more sanitary, and the staff are nicer. Seriously, try this place. It's a little slow because they're trying to get on their feet, but I trust that will improve. The miso soup is standard. Salmon avocado cilantro roll was amazing. Very reasonable prices in the same range as Kin's and Toryumon depending on the item. Can't wait to try the ramen and donburi soon. Will update.
