15 Standout Soul Food Spots to Try Around D.C. | Eater DC

"Oohh’s and Aahh’s doesn’t reinvent the wheel; it works on perfecting the classics. The elbow mac ‘n’ cheese, baked with an ideal balance of cheese and noodles, is a marquee dish, especially for the late-night crowd. Since opening its U Street location in 2003, executive chef and owner Oji Abbott has put down roots at a second location, on Georgia Avenue NW in Brightwood Park. Order takeout online here."

We heard such good reviews and I was not disappointed. The food was DELICIOUS! Real soul food is such a delight. My blackened catfish melted in my mouth and was seasoned so well. The yams were thanksgiving ready the greens and potato salad rich and tasty. Our server was so kind and patient with my group of 5. The drinks are Strong.

Tried this spot after a recommendation from my Uber driver, glad I did! I had the catfish with grits, collard greens, and cornbread. The catfish was fresh, crispy and full of flavor, didn’t even need hot sauce. Grits tasted good but could’ve been creamier, wasn't a fan of the texture. The collard greens were on the sweet side, which caught me off guard but not bad! Cornbread was sweet like cake but a little dry. Also tried the Rum Punch, strong and tasty! Heads up: gratuity is automatically added to the bill.

What a wonderful experience here! We received A+ service and hospitality the moment we walked in. Our server Carlton was excellent, professional and timely. He made sure we felt comfortable and not rushed even tho we were there towards the end of the night. I ordered the turkey wings with mashed potatoes and Mac& cheese. The food was full of flavor, tender and pipping hot! I’ll definitely be back next time I visit DC.

Google
The food was actually really good. But the mac & cheese was dripping with oil. I tried to eat some and then pressed it down to drain it. It wasn’t working. When I told the waiter and asked her to replace it with yellow rice she said “let me ask my manager because you already ate it” I literally took a couple of bites. The manager came over and stood there and said “yeah, uhhh the mac & cheese?” I said yes, I already explained to the server the issue. If you don’t want to replace it, take it off my check. He walked away and made a loud sound effect after doing so. They were very unprofessional especially the manager with how they handled the situation. Mare what could’ve been a great experience a bad one.

Ate here twice with family and friends while in D. C. The food was delicious and the service was great as well. I had the catfish, mac & cheese, and collard greens. The fish was fried crispy, just how I like it.

Google
Visited Oohh's and Aahh's earlier this week, and it was ummmm ummmm good!! The food was hot and made to order. I previously heard about the restaurant and was told that I should visit and I'm glad that I did!! The greens had a sweet but savory taste, which took me by surprise because I can be a bit picky about collard greens. I also ordered cabbage and blackened salmon. I thought that a glaze would come on it, but they brought me a side attraction teriyaki sauce and it was great. The salmon was cooked just how I like it. The service was also great as well. During my visit, a man who appeared to be unhoused was having a medical emergency and I appreciate the fact that they allowed him to sit there unbothered until the paramedics came. I felt that demonstrated their level of compassion- especially at a time when that quality has been hard to find at times. As for the atmosphere, it was fairly quiet during my visit and there were several tables available as well as seating at the bar. When asked if I would I go back? The answer is a resounding yes.

Google
My favorite soul food spot since I moved to the DMV! Staff are friendly, the drinks & food are always good and the service is quick. Their fried chicken is perfectly seasoned & crispy! 😩😍 Love the happy hour cocktails as well. Updated Review: I’ve been a regular at this restaurant for years since moving to DC, and it’s been one of my favorite spots. But I had a really disappointing experience recently that I feel I need to share. I came in on a Saturday to sit at the bar like I usually do, but I was told I could only order takeout because they had an unexpected large party. This didn’t make much sense to me—there was an open seat at the bar with just one person sitting there, and I know there’s also an upstairs area. It felt abrupt and honestly kind of ridiculous to change their dine-in policy last minute because of a party. They just kept repeating that I could get takeout, but I had Ubered there for dinner—not to take food home. As someone who’s been a loyal customer, it was a disappointing way to be treated.

Look here SOMEBODY…. MY God has not failed even on the TasteBuds of an Awesome Meal. The Cabbage is A Banger by itself, The Catfish I mean the Catfish is a must have. Rice and gravy with the veggies. I’m from Baltimore and wanted lunch and when I say they did not Disappoint me I mean that. The staff were welcoming and friendly thank you all. If your near Go grab you a plate can’t wait til they hit the 410 area.

Yelp
I am a new loyal customer!! The food was so good. I have no complaints. I thought it was really cool that they had happy hour available on a Saturday night until 10pm which including several drinks and food items. My only thing is the bathroom could have been cleaner.

Yelp
the food here is usually so good, but service you get from the staff is really hit or miss. they are SO RUDE sometimes for little to no reason. this server named JADA got annoyed after i asked her to take the ice out of my drink... that i had originally ordered W NO ICE. so she took it back, then brought it back to me looking like this (picture below)... like why isn't it filled all the way up ? i mentioned that to her & she immediately caught an attitude. i could tell cause of her body language. she started waving her hands impatiently & said "well i gave it to you for free sooo..." basically implying that i should just be grateful it was free & take it however it came (she didn't even tell me she didn't charge, so i thought that i paid for the drink) . i told her i had no problem paying for it cause i will always pay for something to be how i want it to be, but she just brushed me off & i wasn't in the mood to argue, so i just left it alone. all this to say, y'all need to do better &/or stop hiring these girls w these attitude problems ... like i said, the customer service is a such a disappointment in this place like 90% of the time. GET IT TOGETHER

Yelp
I visited Oohh's and Aahh's on June 1 then June 3 My first experience went seamless had a great waitress the food was impressive my entire party (5) enjoyed there meals Leading us back for our second visit before we headed back to North Carolina. Again the food was delicious but Saturday it was impressive when it came time to pay we were informed that we couldn't spit the bill as we were able to separate the bill on first visit with no issues and paid with three cards effortlessly however on the second visit we were made to split the check basically having to pay for the our food split four ways when it was five people!!! I expressed that our waitress was able to do such on first visit he replied she could be fired for doing so hmmmm for giving proper customer service or for not trying to take advantage of your customers make it make sense I did speak to the owner manager whomever but her tone didn't lead me to believe she cared nor then the lack of said returned call so needless to say I won't be coming back and on principle will take this as far as I can even if I have to get legal with it because I don't appreciate gorilla practices

Yelp
TAKEOUT ORDER EXPERIENCE: On this occasion the experience was OK. What I like about this location compared to the U Street location is even though parking isn't great it is much better than the U Street location. CUSTOMER SERVICE: I walked in and ordered my food to-go. The ordering process was a standard experience for takeout although I would have liked the host to be a little more attentive to customers needing to place orders so that wait in line to order doesn't become unmanageable. FOOD: The food was OK. Considering this is soul food I was expecting more flavor and attention to detail: more flavor in potato salad, more flavor in sweet potatoes (which seemed to be boiled and waterlogged), and fresher and more flavorful turkey wings (and a better cook on the peppers and onions it came with). I will give them another try and perhaps dine in on the next occasion. Give them a try.

Yelp
Craved some souls food while in DC. Bestfriend recommended this location, we made reservations, upon walking in we realized the rest of our party went to the other location. We asked to be seated while we wait for them, we were told to wait at the bar, even though the restaurant was pretty empty. Food was delicious.

Yelp
Inside was comfortable with plenty of seating upstairs and downstairs. Reservations were made for our large group in advance. We were seated upstairs. We had to ask for menus and water. No waiter came to greet us or introduce themself. Three of us went downstairs to ask for service Someone finally took our drink and food order at only one of our four tables! Three tables still have not been served. We've been here for 2 hours! Those that received food said the food was good. I'm so disappointed that I didn't take any food pics. Our server was as good as he could be but in my opinion, more than one wait staff should have assisted our group. I spoke to one of the managers who really did not see to care.

Yelp
Came out here for 5 days from California on a work trip. What can I say? This place is FIRE. Me and my folks have been here 3 times during this 5 day stay. I had the Turkey Burger Sliders FIRE! The Meatloaf with BBQ Sauce FIRE! The Greens, the Mac & Cheese, the mashed potatoes. I hate that I have to go back to Cali and not be able to get a real well seasoned turkey burger. Love the food, y'all official fa real tho..

Yelp
I've eaten from the U Street Oohh's and Aahh's location many times and the food has always been delicious. During a recent visit to DC, I decided to try ordering delivery from the Georgia Ave location. I ordered the shrimp and grits, collard greens, yams, Mac and cheese, sweet potato cake and chocolate cake for my friend and I. The delivery logistics was horrible. I had to order the delivery through a third party, Toast, which didn't provide a tracking mechanism of where the food was. I had to call Oohh's and Aahh's three times to try and figure out what happened to my order. At first, I was told Uber Eats picked it up and told it was Door Dash in the second call. On the third call, I was told to report it as stolen from the delivery driver. About 5-10 minutes after that, I received a call back from Oohh's and Aahh's stating that they confirmed with Door Dash that the driver was delivering the food. I checked outside and it was delivered to the unit above (not there previously). It took over an hour to sort all of this out which is why a star was taken off. The food itself was amazing! The greens were a little salty but everything else was fantastic. Next time, I will just be doing a pick up order or eating in.

Yelp
Wow food was delicious. High quality food. Service was great. Brussels sprouts were delicious!

Yelp
As soon as I entered the establishment I was greeted by a hostess. I told her I was placing an order to go and she showed me where to go. Upon placing my order I was told it would be a 20-25 minute wait on food. That's a plus because most establishments won't tell you that until you order your food. I got my food in less than 15 minutes. The server Joann was very friendly and talked to me during my wait. The food was fresh (I ordered breaded wings with Mac and yams) and hot. I'm a stickler for macaroni and cheese and it was just okay. I'm not from DC just I visit often and I will for sure be back.

Yelp
Road trips and Pit Stops! On my way to Virginia we stopped in DC for Dinner. This was much needed and some of the best food and service the whole trip. We walked in and were seated. It was not packed on a Thursday night. We ordered the new meat special. I ordered fried and shrimp with mashed potatoes and Mac and cheese. I also ordered a titos strawberry lemonade and it was tasty and had a good kick. The shrimp was delicious. Fresh and seasoned. The chicken was also tasty. Everything tasted good. The portions were also good. With enough to take home. The service was also great. Everyone was friendly and we had the best server Sam. If you go tell him I sent you and take his pic!

Yelp
Very inconsistent restaurant! I come here very often whether it is carried out or dining in, it's inconsistent! You have to pray that you will have a pleasant experience. I have no problem with a wait but as I ask if I should go to my car or wait please be transparent without an attitude. This Georgia Ave location is the only one that I would ever recommend.... That Ust location... just kiss it goodbye... Food is more than likely going to be great at the Georgia Location. But just wish there was more consistency!

Yelp
The food was great: good portions and the taste was pretty good. However, the customer service was so-so and it started with the hostess on down to our server. We were sat with a large party upstairs and were practically ignored. There isn't any ambiance to address. If in the area and wanting food to go, this would be your place.

Yelp
The food was delicious and service was wonderful. The music was also good. They were very friendly and attentive. I felt like I was dining with family. Will definitely go back!

Yelp
My wife found a new place for lunch. Oohs and Aahs Soul Food Restaurant on Georgia Ave. We arrived just before the restaurant opened, the staff greeted us with smiles, soft neosoul music playing. the place appears recently renovated, with windows opening to the street and a back room available. Concerning the food. My wife ordered fried catfish, cabbage and macaroni and cheese. The catfish filets were seasoned and fried perfectly. The cabbage was well seasoned and the first forkful of baked macaroni and cheese told me all I needed to know as it pulled away with several strings of cheese that showed how dense and cheesy it was. My wife said her entire meal was well prepared and presented. She added after eating such good filling food she needed a nap. I ordered the fried chicken and waffles. The server offered chicken breast, thighs or wings. I selected the chicken breast. When my meal arrived I loved the dusting of powdered sugar and when I cut into the waffle it seemed to be flavored with cinnamon and nutmeg, which paired wonderfully with with the sweetness of the syrup, against the savory flavors of the fried chicken. Outstanding! I enjoyed my dish so much I ordered a fried whiting fish sandwich to go with banana pudding and peach cobbler. Run don't walk to enjoy this food! Great job everyone!

Yelp
They are my go-to basic in a good way no-frills soul food spot in the DMV. It's always flavorful and taste like it was made in someone's grandma's kitchen. They have hella sides on the menu, which makes them vegetarian friendly. I've utilized their catering services for work events as well and they are very professional. I look forward to eating their food every single time.

Yelp
This place is sliding downward a bit from my viewpoint. We were seated at a table that wasn't cleaned, so we asked the server to help with that. The appetizer was brought to the table after the entrees. The collard greens were barely warm and tasted too sweet. The fish was fried very lightly. The prices are inconsistent because I've been there 3 times and the price of some items are different each time e.g., cornbread. The to go order fish add more batter and was fried harder again - inconsistent. There were no condiments or utensils in the to go order. The restaurant and the bathroom floor were both sticky. The staff seemed nice though. I hope it improves.

Yelp
Solid spot for old school soul food. This location of Oohh's & Aahh's has a fairly spacious dining room; good ratio of staff to customers; friendly vibe; and nice presentation of plated food. The catfish dinner is spot-on. I love the collard greens which accompany; they're fresh with a deft touch of vinegar. The potato salad is traditional, something my mom would make and yummy. I didn't find the preparation of whiting fish as top notch. The fountain drinks are generous in size. The strawberry lemonade is balanced, just what I like. Lots of napkins arrive with the meal, which is appreciated. Gotta do something about the door to the unisex restroom however, that thing is like pushing a heavy boulder.

Yelp
My family and I went yesterday for dinner and we all left happy. The food was good. The service was great and we even saw Lady London, the rapper eating at a table across from us. We all left with food to take home. It was really nice and we will all be back soon. The ambiance was amazing.

Yelp
This place is amazing. The food was super good. Everyone was there was super nice and down to earth. Definitely will be back

Yelp
Stopped at Ooh"s & Aahh's on Georgia St. In DC.The food was delicious!!! I had the catfish with greens, macncheese and a side of yams. The cornbread and red velvet cake was off the charts! I highly recommend this place!

Yelp
Service was amazing Calvin spirit was great right off back. He made sure we got what we wanted plus more. Very helpful & Pleasant. The food was really good we had no complaints. Very reasonable and of course I had an adult beverage Tito's Strawberry Lemonade was very good.

Yelp
What do you call it when you do the same thing expecting different results? Oh yeah...insanity! I've had Oohh's & Aahh'a before yet I somehow thought things would be different this time because it's been a minute since my last visit. I had the catfish with yams, macaroni and cheese and a side of potato salad. I even added on a piece of the strawberry cake to satisfy my sweet tooth. Here's what I thought about each item. Catfish: The seasoning is too salty just like I remembered but the dinner comes with 2 pieces unlike other places where you only get 1. Yams: I didn't care for them and tasted like pie filling like I saw on another review. Macaroni and cheese: I also didn't care for it and was flavorless. The cheese was not melted and gooey like a good Mac and cheese always is. Potato salad: Decent enough but not the best by far. The large chunks of potatoes were inconsistent in size which is a personal pet peeve for potato salad for me. Strawberry cake: Dense and had an odd texture. I didn't like the taste of the cake or the frosting. What a waste! Overall, it's all way too expensive for sub par and mediocre food. I won't make the same mistake again.

Yelp
This place is 10/10 for ME!!!!! If you're not into Flavor, seasoning, home cooked southern food that taste like your aunty with the thick arms is making those collard greens, or drinks that make you want to get a cab instead of driving than this review is not for you. This place is a fantastic! The décor is very cute and cozy, the staff is friendly and knowledgeable. We had a sweet waitress who paid us great attention we're pleasantly surprised of her age because of how posed she was and hilarious. The food, drinks, beautiful staff, and ambience felt like home. I'm bringing my momma next time lol.

Yelp
First time here and I must say, the most impressive part of the whole experience was the A1 service Geo provided! I'm talking CFA type service! Her service was better than the food and I'd go back and request her! Now on to the food. The food was fine. This place was recommend by 2 coworkers so me and friend gave it shot. I will admit I was a little worried when I saw a party across from us leave with their plates still full. It was obvious they didn't like their food. Our food however, was fine. I ordered the blackened whiting with Mac n cheese and cabbage. I was going to go for the collard greens but Geo, being the rockstar that she is warned us they were sweet and let us sample first. I've NEVER heard of or had sweet collards before and though it wasn't bad, it wasn't my vibe. I also sampled the yams too and they were sweet and more like a soufflés but delicious. It didn't take long for me to realize sugar is their main ingredient lol. Even my cabbage was sweet (face palm). I probably should had gotten the fried whiting instead bc even though it was seasoned, it definitely needed more. I had to add hot sauce and salt and even the hot sauce was sweet. Now the peach cobbler- to me- was breading pudding with peaches. Definitely good flavor and a highlight for the food. My friend enjoyed her Turkey wings and the meat was falling off the bone. Neither of us were blown away by the quality of the food but it was fine. I would go back if I was in the area. Probably not the place for you if you have diabetes though. There's paid street parking on the side and a wal mart parking garage around the corner. Do what you will what that info.

Yelp
I love love love this food but they have to work on their customer service. I want to see smiles when I walk in an establishment with great food not long dry faces and that's the only reason I didn't give them 5 stars. The inside is nice, clean, and spacious and they have a nice bar area as well. I've never been upstairs but I'm sure there is more seating up there. They have a great family deal for $60 that comes with 4 meats, and 3 large sides. We got that deal and got fried catfish, fried whiting, lemon pepper wings, regular fried wings, collard greens, mac and cheese, and yellow rice with gravy. Everything was delicious and we left no crumbs lol. They have great desserts as well. I love their banana pudding. The food is just really good here. Good soul food that warms your soul. I enjoy eating here every time. Parking sucks but once you eat you'll be alright lol (don't mind my paper plate lol. We took the food to go and I was not washing dishes.)

Yelp
The food was good. However, the service was horrible. I visited Oohhs and aahhs with a group of friends and a few of us ordered bottomless mimosas. We waited about 30-45 minutes for the servers to bring out our first mimosa. After continuously asking for the drinks. Usually when you get bottomless mimosas they come out immediately because I mean it's a simple drink. I was also very confused why it took so long bc there was not many ppl in the establishment. Many workers but everyone seemed to be aimlessly walking around looking lost. Before we left, we tried to order another mimosa, because we paid for bottomless. We were told we had to pay for another mimosa. We had not closed out or paid for anything so this confused many of us. After we had to wait 30-45 minutes into our reservation for the first mimosa to come out. This turned me off and is the main reason I'm writing this review. The service was slow and daunting. Good food. Service horrible. I would not recommend sitting in the establishment to eat. Order take out.

Chris W.

Yelp
The service was terrible. Left out a lot of carry out items (BBQ wings with no BBQ sauce, mashed potato's and gravy with no gravy) and the workers were pretty rude aside from the guy taking carry out orders.

Yelp
I came here on Juneteenth for late lunch with a few friends. We were greeted so graciously. Our server, Andrew was very kind and prompt. He got every single order correct and answered all the questions the table had. I would come back just for the service! Okay, let's get to the real reason you're reading this - the food. It did not disappoint. It was my first time coming to the sit down restaurant and I will definitely come back!

Yelp
I'm from the Deep South so I love, and I do mean love soul food. This restaurant did not disappoint. I went to this restaurant to celebrate my personal new year aka my birthday. We decided to sit outside since it was a nice evening. I got the fried chicken wings with collard greens and potato salad, my daughter got the fried whiting with Mac and cheese and collard greens. The server we had was nice, but preoccupied, he was on his phone a lot, I assumed he had an emergency or something, but it was weird. He did give me a free slice of cake for my birthday, it was a strawberry cake. The cake was delicious. The fried chicken wings were very succulent and still crispy. They were seasoned to perfection. I ordered a 10 piece but only got 8, I just charged it to the game :/ My daughter loved her fried whiting, she said it was so delicious. Our collard greens were delicious, the macaroni and cheese was good, the potato salad was ok, not as good as my grandmother's but it was still tasty. I would return, I hope all is well with that server. I say this restaurant is worth checking out if you are in the mood or soul food.

Yelp
Food came out fresh and quickly I love that. The crew that was on duty this day had an abundance of professionalism and the place has culture! Pull up on! Support this BOB!

Yelp
DC is one of the places I call home, and home cooking is what we found at Oohh's & Aahh's. I ordered the catfish and grits. The catfish was moist with a light cornmeal coating. The grits were creamy and flavorful and topped with delicious sautéed peppers and onions and chicken gravy. I am glad I didn't eat breakfast because the portion was generous. The server was helpful and kind; Chef O stopped by the table to see how we were doing and made us feel very welcome. To top that, he caught up with us a couple minutes after we left because we accidentally dropped our credit card! That was so nice!!!

Denise J.

Yelp
Great weekend in the DC area and the icing on the cake was eating at this restaurant. It was so good we went back again. The service and food were both amazing. And if you're looking for a great Old Fashion drink, it is a must!

Loryn D.

Yelp
Food is delicious, extraordinary taste, quick service, food was hot and not soggy. We ordered take out but next time I wanna sit in and enjoy the atmosphere

Rob S.

Yelp
Was busy the waiter we had was attentive but was very busy. They did not have fountain soda but would accommodate us with bottled soda. We waited a little for our food but came hot and ready to eat. I can say it was a place for just casual dining not like fine dining or anything in the sort.

Yelp
Excellence food and service. Servers constantly checked on yes. Nice and quaint atmosphere A+++!

Yelp
Stopped by for lunch while in town for a visit. Underground parking is available by turning on the street just north of restaurant. There's about 7 or 8 tables outside, just below street level. There is a special lunch menu; note that not everything on the menu is available during lunch. Ordered the catfish with grits and a side of yams. The catfish was lightly breaded and delicious, and the grits were a perfect complement. The grits were topped with just the right amount of peppers, onions, and gravy. The real star of the lunch for me were the yams, kind of like pumpkin pie without the crust. Although it was listed as a side item, it could also serve as a dessert if you ask me. Service was excellent. In fact, we accidentally left our credit card behind and the chef ran us down in the Walmart to return it! Keep in mind that this level of quality comes at a price. It was a fairly expensive lunch, but worth every bit! We'll be back to explore more of the menu next time we're in town.

Yelp
Great food. Park in Walmart parking underground. I've tried their shrimp, chicken and meatloaf dishes. I'm ready for the next meal already!

Yelp
A friend that lives in the area swears by this place. I love Southern food and supporting black-owned businesses so trying this place out was a no-brainer! My party of 10 arrived around 4pm on a Saturday just in time for Happy Hour and we were seated upstairs right away. The hostess was very welcoming and our server was friendly. I ordered the Hennessy Sangria and it was STRONG! The bartender definitely has a heavy hand. My friend enjoyed her turkey wings. The chicken wings were a good size and tasty and I loved their greens but my favorite thing was the catfish nuggets. I'll definitely get that next time. It was seasoned and fried to perfection! Docking one star because although the restaurant wasn't as busy when we arrived, it did take a little while to receive our food and some people received it WELL before others. Our entrees also arrived before the appetizers. I'm hoping this was just a one-off incident. I'll definitely be back.

Yelp
I tried this place for the first time this past Saturday from Ubereats!!! I ordered the Turkey wings and Collard greens!!! BOMB!!!! When it got to me still hot! The turkey wings w/gravy onions and peppers was soooooooo GOOD!!!!! Fall off the bone GOOD! Seasoned WELL!! Tasty!!!! Now let me get to the greens, I was skeptical of ordering greens because everytime I have ordered from other places, that charge you crazy price, you can tell they are really canned greens, but NO not this spot, they serve/give you FRESH GREENS like your Grandma cooked. Them greens sooooooooooooooooooooooooo FREAKING GOOD!!! Seasoned very well!! I'm a fan of this spot now. Did not disappoint

Yelp
Fantastic Black Owned Establishment!! We ventured here after taking youngest on a local college visit. I had to visit after reading several of my Yelp VIP's ratings and pics. Establishment was easy to find w plenty of inexpensive street parking. We walked in and the dining space was a welcoming open space where we were able to choose our seats. Kamille assisted us and gave great recommendations. We ordered the HH Wings, Baked Chix Breast Meal, Catfish Platter, 10 Wingette Meal w plenty of sides galore and a piece of Corn Bread. We loved each and everything ordered. Everything came out hot, well seasoned and plentiful. Kamille was great w visiting our table at the perfect times and making sure we did not want for anything. I look forward to visiting this business very soon, especially for brunch!! I've heard great things!! Oh and if you plan to visit, sign up for their emails and you'll get an immediate $5 off coupon as well as a coupon on Birthday, etc. Job well done Oohh's and Aahh's, you've gained permanent customers !!

Yelp
We went here for the unlimited mimosa brunch for my friends birthday and had a great time! The food was delicious - tasted like family recipes! However, some items like the greens and hot sauce were oddly sweet. For $20 you can choose from unlimited classic, strawberry, or cranberry mimosas, which are very tasty. I had called a couple of days ahead to make a reservation and the young lady on the phone had to ask her dad what to do (I don't think she knew I could hear, but it was cute). I didn't think much of it, but when we arrived, the hostess asked if a guy or a girl took the reservation and I wasn't sure why, but luckily it was empty so any issues there could've been didn't matter. The music was fun and had the guests (and servers) jammin, so it felt like we were at a function, especially when they played a few birthday songs for my friend. All in all it was a vibe and we will be back for brunch!

Yelp
The food was impeccable. I loved the flavors and presentation. Our waitress was amazing. She made up for the curt impersonal hostess that seated us. I expected a little more from the vibe. I appreciated the soundtrack. With food this amazing, a few things should be highlighted. #1 there's only one piece of art hanging in the downstairs area that throws everything off. Add more or present it a the focal point of the restaurant. Display your accolades. I only knew they were on the food network after seeing a glimpse of one of the waitresses shirts. That should be posted on the exterior and visible to draw foodies. A gentle came upstairs and greeted all tables except ours and I felt slighted after getting back watching the episode. He actually looked like the owner. I guess he didn't come over because we only had water at the time. The only side dish I didn't like was the Mac&Cheese.

Yelp
The food was delicious! We were definitely satisfied with the little gem of a restaurant. The service was great and it felt like home. Make sure you hit this place at least once while in DC. Other perk is Walmart s never door!

Yelp
We make an annual trek to DC every August. Luckily we have been able to visit for sometime. We found Oohh's & Aahh's on U street and it is one of our favs. They have grown to be a DC food institution. I know the Georgia Avenue location opened approximately three years ago but with Covid we were content with U street as their take-out was unbeatable. Prior to Covid, staff was very gracious and even allowed us to dine upstairs. This year we were happy to give the Georgia Avenue location a shot. Oohh's & Aahh's built a solid following by offering tasty soul food dishes, large portions and great take-out service. The Georgia location is a nice change of pace. The food remains consistently good and tasty. What was lacking was the level of service and some basic issues which are fixable. It's one thing to have a friendly smile and nice personality. It's another to have the discipline and expertise to provide the type of service dining-in requires. It could be a training issue or perhaps staff was new but it's the small things that can make/break businesses in reaching their goals. I want to be fair in sharing my experience as I know businesses and staff work their butts off to gain customer confidence. Another issue that may seem minor but needs to be communicated is most know Diabetes is a major ailment in the African-American community as well as other ethnicities. We arrived on Sunday following church service and was promptly seated. Our friend who happened to be diabetic wanted chicken and waffles. In addition he wanted some unsweetened iced tea. Unfortunately, he was shut out because they do no offer any sugar-free syrup or unsweetened tea. This was incredibly perplexing considering there is a Walmart next door and I am sure there shelves were stocked with sugar-free syrup???? I did order the sweet tea but must admit it was a bit syrupy or too sweet but that's not a big deal but needs to be mentioned so this review is accurate. As mentioned the food is unbeatable and this is where Oohh's and Aahh's shine. The big drawback as mentioned was regarding diabetes and the service. We made several request for things like hot-sauce, barbeque sauce, napkins and even utensils and even though the server was apologetic we felt they were basic and should have been anticipated or worse promptly delivered, instead of having to make multiple request. Oohh's and Aahh's has earned our business but hopefully brushes up their server game, otherwise we will return to U street as their take-out has never failed. Either way this review is only for this experience as they are deserving of your business.

Yelp
Had the shrimp and crab fritters that were just added to the menu. Fantastic!! They came out hot and the sauce that came with it belongs in a jar. I'd buy it! The service was terrific!! Our server was attentive, friendly, and patient as we navigated the menu. Will be coming back for more!

Yelp
I had such a wonderful takeout experience at Oohhs and Aahhs yesterday. Before I arrived I called and was greeted so pleasantly. Upon arriving I was once again greeted immediately and invited to have a seat or to place an order. I placed a takeout order and sat down while it was being prepared. The environment was quite nice. I noted that I'd love to come back to eat there. A different staff person saw me sitting for longer than five minutes and asked my name. He went and got my order and waited to ensure that I received the right one. Once home I was so happy that my food hit that spot! It was delicious--everything about it was tasty and well seasoned. The portions were on the slightly small side but not enough to complain. I requested extra gravy on my yellow rice but barely got a drop. It didn't matter because the rice was flavorful. Overall, I was absolutely delighted by the service and the food. It was quite a drive to get to the restaurant and back home but well with it.

Yelp
The worst service I've ever had. Workers standing around talking. Can't get anyone's attention. Ordered food and mimosas at the same time. Why did the food beat the drinks out?? Because they were doing all this talking and not attending to customers. We didn't even eat all the food... because we were disappointed with the service we received. On top of that ... they took out a automatic gratuity. I try to support black businesses but I care about service most importantly. No worries I won't be coming back. No Oohh's or Aahh's in sight. Y'all can have it! All these other reviews are obviously fake or purchased. Ain't no way in hell someone gave this place even a 2 star!

Yelp
I was at the Georgia Ave location yesterday (3/17/2024) after having not been there for about 4 weeks, and the same person working the cash register was still there. Her name is Jordan J. and she seems to either be really ignorant or just have some sort of issue. Absolutely no customer service--no greetings, she just stands there when customers walk up to order with a mean look on her face. Why is this rude, unprofessional person at the register taking orders? The other members of the crew that evening were so professional and friendly. Im just shocked that this Jordan person's behavior has gone unnoticed and not addressed. I wont be back!
