I was excited to try this highly recommended soul food restaurant, but my experience fell short of expectations. From sweet-tasting grits and greens to sugary cornbread, the unorthodox use of sugar in traditionally savory dishes was perplexing.
The fries, obviously frozen, were also somehow sweet. Mac and cheese, typically a comfort food favorite, was bland and surprisingly sweet. The cornbread, small in size, was priced at $1.99 - a cost that would have been easier to swallow had the quality been better. I mean, cmon it tasted like some knockoff Jiffy mix.
The catfish and chicken wings were a disappointment. The former was soaked in grease, while the latter had an off, stale taste, though it seemed freshly fried. The sauces didn't help much either; the BBQ sauce reminded me of a generic store brand, and the Buffalo sauce was, once again, sweet.
The sweet potato cake for dessert, though appropriately sweet this time, was dry and seemed old, as if it'd been sitting around for a while. Maybe desserts aren't sold often enough here to ensure freshness.
Our bill for two, totaling over $75, included the dessert, cornbread, 2 pieces of catfish, and two chicken wing dinners. Unfortunately, given the quality of the food, it was a meal that simply didn't live up to its cost. I've had far better soul food experiences elsewhere, and, based on this visit, I cannot recommend this restaurant. Those seeking authentic, savory soul food might want to continue their search.
