Owakudani Black Eggs – Hakone, Japan - Gastro Obscura

"Owakudani, meaning the Great Boiling Valley, is located in the mountain town of Hakone. One can take an aerial tram up to the hot springs, or walk up the 1 km path. On clear days either route delivers spectacular views of the ominous Mt. Fuji. Once the springs are reached, kuro-tamago, or black eggs, can be purchased four at a time. The eggs are ordinary chicken eggs but the shell turns black due to being boiled in the hot sulfur spring. Local tradition holds that for each black egg eaten, seven years is added to one’s life. However, some say that eating more than two is not recommended. The valley is sometimes referred to as “The Death Valley” by locals. Some 3000 years ago Mount Hakone erupted leaving the hot spring filled crater. All along the path to the egg vendor are active sulfuric geysers, which can be hazardous at times. The area is prone to landslides due to the constant volcanic activity. In potentially unsafe conditions, the walkways to the egg boiling springs may be closed. Know Before You Go Currently the black eggs can be purchased at any of the Owakudani’s souvenir stores for 500 yen, four at a time. Typically the expiration date is within two days after purchase. If you want to eat it on the spot, grab a seat at the café at the back of the Kurotamago-kan souvenir shop or sit outside on a bench or one of the stools shaped after the black egg." - geisellesantos, Fred Cherrygarden, pavi, Clinton, Mark Loftin, agresti

While exploring Hakone, we made a stop at this famous spot known for the legendary black egg — they say eating one adds 7 years to your life! It was packed with tourists, and the line to buy the eggs was really long. Gotta admit, the city did a great job building hype and turning this into a fun little legend. 4 eggs for 500 yen — a bit pricey! The shells are black, but taste-wise… it’s just a regular egg. 😄 Still, it was a fun stop for the experience. Too bad the fog was really thick when we arrived, so we couldn’t see the sulfur mountain clearly.

Great place with incredible views of Fuji and also the sulphurous gases escaping from the volcanic activity underground. Museum is interesting to look around too. Should sell eggs in pairs to avoid wastage. Curry buns are great!

It’s takes a while to get up there but it’s definitely a must do if you’re in Hakone. Have the black eggs of course and see if you can book a tour to the mine area. Make sure you have cash with you.

I bought a slice of strawberry cake and it was really delicious. The reason for the low rating was not due to the cake, but rather for the young lady who asked me to leave their area because I was eating the strawberry cake in their sitting area when I purchased a cup id coffee from their coffee shop. Although the young lady was very polite and cheerful she only focused on the slice of cake.

Totally worth checking out. The views are good, the food is good and ice cream is excellent, there are plenty of souvenirs, and of course the back eggs. Come check this place out for sure if you are in the area. The hokone free pass is totally worth it.

Owakudani is a volcanic valley in Hakone, Japan, known for its active sulfur vents and hot springs. One of its most famous attractions is the Kurotamago, or black eggs, which are regular chicken eggs boiled in the area's natural hot springs. The sulfur and iron in the water turn the shells black, and local legend says that eating one can add seven years to your life. The eggs taste like regular hard-boiled eggs, but the unique cooking process and the dramatic volcanic scenery make the experience special. You can purchase them at the Kurotamago House near the Owakudani Ropeway Station. They are typically sold in packs of four for around ¥500 by today exchange rate (May of 2025) approximately $4 The area also offers panoramic views of Mount Fuji on clear days, and there are various shops selling souvenirs and snacks related to the black eggs. It's a popular tourist spot, so it can get crowded, especially on weekends and holidays. Visiting earlier in the day can help avoid the crowds.

It was busy. Everyone was lining up to buy the black eggs and only a few people were shopping for souvenirs in the rest of the shop. There's a separate line for the eggs and there is no buying just one egg. It comes in 4. We had limited time so we didn't get a chance to look around much. There were lots of packaged cookies like you find at Mt Fuji stops.

I was really excited to try this egg but once I tried it I realized it was just a normal tasting egg. Just a black shell. I was hoping the sulphur springs would make it taste different but it tasted like a normal egg. Fun to get for the novelty.
