India Maxwell's Bozeman, Montana Travel Guide | Bon Appétit

"They have a great cocktail bar, and the bartenders can make whatever drink you’re in the mood for. I love the Paragon, a tequila-based drink with tarragon, honey, and chile." - ByIndia Maxwell, as told to Melissa Loveridge

I came here by myself for a solo birthday dinner & I was SO pleased with Open Range. I had the beef cheeks bourguignon with double mash instead of the brussels. I cannot brag on the staff here enough!! Knowing that I was new to town I was given great recommendations for the area and even groups to join. My waitress was sweet enough to box my things and send me home with a sweet note on the dessert. Good environment, great food!

After an unforgettable morning hiking the Lava Lake Trail during my Yellowstone trip, I made my way into downtown Bozeman looking for a good lunch spot — and stumbled upon Open Range. Funny enough, it wasn’t even my first choice, but I’m so glad I ended up here. What a hidden gem! Right from the moment I walked in, the atmosphere felt welcoming and relaxed. The space strikes a great balance between stylish and casual, and the staff truly made the experience shine. Every interaction felt warm and genuine. Special shoutout to Liam, our host — an absolute gentleman with a kind, professional, and welcoming attitude. He set the tone for a perfect lunch. I ordered the milk bun, wedge salad, Montana chop steak, and crème brûlée — and every bite was on point. Everything was made from fresh, high-quality ingredients, and you could tell the kitchen really cares about flavor and presentation. The chop steak was especially impressive — tender, juicy, and cooked to perfection. I also happened to catch happy hour and treated myself to a martini, which was flawlessly balanced and not watered down at all. One of my favorite parts? The wall of dog photos near the front. I learned that every pup featured belongs to a current or former staff member — such a thoughtful and adorable way for the owner to honor the team since day one. It really speaks to the sense of care and community you feel throughout the place. Open Range made my short stop in Bozeman feel extra memorable. Whether you’re coming off a trail or just looking for an elevated but unpretentious place to eat, this spot is a must. Great food, great people, and great energy. I’ll definitely be back — and thank you again, Liam. You made it special. 10000% recommended

What an amazing dinner! My son never eats soup but this night, he wanted soup and it came with his meal. He absolutely loved it! The salad was pretty terrific too, I could smell the balsamic before the plate hit the table! At first I thought I wanted different side dishes but everything was paired perfectly! We were there for a special occasion and they made our evening feeling exactly as such, very special!

We dined at Open Range on Christmas Eve and had a great time. I was a little hesitant to make a reservation since past reviews seem to be a hit or miss. But, my husband and I decided to bite the bullet. There aren't many options for Christmas Eve dining in town anyway. Our waitress, who seemed to also be one of the bartenders was very sweet. We sat close to the entrance so we got a little cold when the front doors opened but it wasn't bad overall. The interior was very cute and inviting. We ordered way too much food but I'll break it down dish by dish... • Lemon Drop: Worth every penny. I wish I had more in a glass. • Bone Marrow: Not bad. It could have used a tad more seasoning but the sourdough bread definitely helped elevate the flavor. I wish the bread was toasted but no big deal. • French Onion Soup: Delicious! My husband hates onions but loved the soup here. It was especially tasty on a semi-cold Christmas Eve night. • 16 oz. Ribeye: Cooked perfectly. I love a cast iron seared steak and the beef tallow made it even better. We decided to split a steak - already knowing we'd order way more than two people could eat. • Lobster Mac & Cheese: It was much better than I was expecting. • Heirloom Baby Carrots: There was something about this dish that just didn't do it for me. I'm not sure if it was the spices, or lack of, but still better than others. • Cornbread skillet: A reliable side if it's something you're craving but nothing to write home about. • Cookie skillet: Not very exciting. The cookie was okay but the huckleberry ice cream made it much better. • Dow's 10-year: Treat yourself! This port was the perfect balance of sweet and smooth. My husband also ordered french fries and there was nothing special about 'em. He's not a fan of truffle fries so these were plain. I personally think the truffle fries would have been a better option. All in all, our bill was about $240. Definitely not an every day dining experience for us but we're happy to come back, with a few menu alterations, on special occasions.

This meal was one of the highlights of our Bachelor Party trip to Bozeman. Initially booked for 10 (reduced to 9 with no problem), there was no down payment for the reservation. Our server, Wyatt, was extremely helpful. Explained all of the menu options and answered just about every question we had. The cocktails were great. The steak was unforgettable. As someone who doesn't eat a lot of red meat, I was incredibly impressed. I ordered the Bison Ribeye cooked medium rare with a split femur bone marrow add-on, and some seasonal vegetables. It was perfect. 10/10 would order again. Also pictured is "The Bacon", one of the appetizers we ordered. this was also delicious, but was hard to split amongst 8 people (one was vegetarian). Speaking of that, there were a few vegetarian options. Our friend said it was good, but didn't finish his plate...so take that how you will. Everyone who ordered steak said it was delicious. Finally, since it was a bachelor party, we needed the meals split in a way that would save the bachelor from having to pay. Wyatt was incredibly helpful in separating the bill into 8 different seats, and also splitting the bachelor's meal amongst the 8 of us. No complaints, no confusion, no problem. He also gave us good bar/club recommendations for after dinner. I would absolutely return to this restaurant if I find myself back in Bozeman. It was expensive, but it's a steakhouse...that's to be expected. It's worth it if you want good food.

What a kind and generous restaurant owner and staff for providing a free meal and drinks for veterans on Veterans Day. We were treated like royalty and provided generous portions of fabulous food. The Wagu steak was so flavorful and perfectly prepared, fresh and tasty salad, refreshing drinks, and perfect cheesecake to top off the meal. Everyone was so kind and we were especially blessed to have Julia as our server. Thanks again for your support of veterans.

WOW! If you haven’t been to open range, I 100% recommend. The food is so fresh and the crew is awesome! Parker went above and beyond to really make us feel special! I don’t come to Montana often, but if you’re in town this is where you want to be. Also, our server Bryson (who is also in usually in the kitchen) really knew his stuff and gave us a great laugh! Overall 10/10 experience and I will be returning very soon!

We were with a group of 6. Everyone loved their meals. Cooked to perfection. The meals were pricey but worth it. The atmosphere was cozy. Top notch service, too.
