18 Best Restaurants on the Outer Banks | Eater Carolinas

"Lines form early for the fresh pastries and donuts at Buxton’s Orange Blossom Bakery & Cafe. The menu changes but often includes cheese Danishes, spice raisin bread, walnut sticky buns, and cinnamon rolls. The real draw here, though, is the “uglies,” in particular the apple uglies — pastry dough and spiced apples are twisted into knots, baked, and glazed in enormous quantities." - Matt Lardie

Crazy place!!! Packed -inside and outside. That alone tells you how good this place is! It was the best chocolate muffin I have ever had-Ever! The Apple Ugly was so yummy..best if eaten fresh and warm. The chocolate Danish was also very delicious. One of the nicest ladies came down the Long Wait Line to help people take sandwich orders to help move the line along. Highly recommend this Cute, Little, Very Busy Bakery!!!!

Michele Guidicessi

Google
Okay what everyone says about the apple uglies is true, you definitely want to try them!!! But there are also a lot of other yummy treats: cinnamon rolls, hand pies and lots of different breakfast sandwiches. The place itself is small and quaint. The only downside is this isn't really a place you can sit and enjoy. The only seating is outside and its been super hot so that's not an option right now. But totally worth it to pick up and take home!

Google
I’ll say it again in case you missed the other review: the cinnamon buns with icing are to die for! We also got breakfast sandwiches here and a couple apple uglies. It was busy both times we stopped in (on a vacation) and we were not disappointed about the hype! Delicious, delectable, yummy, not-sharing-mine, obviously not freezer food, generous portions… I’ll miss you Orange Blossom Bakery. There’s no one quite like you back home… Other notes: you can’t eat-in but there’s a porch that seats around 16 or so. It’s not wheelchair friendly so please have your friend pop in for you.

Google
Follow the line of cars and pull into a packed parking lot and you will find the Orange Blossom. Amazing pastry that are larger than life. Place your order and have a seat outside and wait for the curtoius staff to call your name. You won't leave hungry. Highly recommend. Limited hours

Google
It's worth waking up early for. The ugly apple are huge and completely stuffed with apples. It took me 3 days to finish but was good to the last bite. Staff is super friendly and helpful. You also have to try a breakfast sandwich 🤤🤤. So yummy.

Aaron Green

Google
So the food was pretty good. Conning roll and ugly were both good. The parking lot was kinda crazy. Too many cars for the space. The line was pretty long to order anything. It’s good, but be prepared for some chaos to get your order.

Courtney Ogle-Brown

Google
The reason behind the two stars is that the cinnamon roll I got was rock hard and we couldn’t even eat it so we had the throw away $7. Also they charged us for another cinnamon roll and thought they had put it in the bag with our apple ugly just to find out they charged us for it but never gave it to us. The apply ugly was good that is the two stars. The line was very uncomfortable and the lady that took our order had a bad attitude.. definitely won’t be going back…

Google
The apple uglies are the bomb! They are delicious warm and at room temp with cinnamon and apples swirled throughout! The chocolate iced donuts are a cross between Krispy Kreem and a cake donut and taste delicious. The iced cinnamon buns are great too! Going back for more and to try their coffee.

Yelp
Definite vacation OVERINDULGENCE! The service is fast paced to keep up with the line (as quick as they can be with everyone ogling the array of pastries and added more of their delicious items to their order) Everyone is always friendly and helpful (both employees & those patiently waiting in line We make it a point to stop, no matter where what village we are staying in The ugliest are worth wait & the drive!

Yelp
Went back for another round of these delicious apple fritters. And this time they had chocolate covered ones. Place is still busy. Menu is on the white board, know what you want to order when it's your turn. People wait till they are asked and that is really tough on the awesome staff. When you leave there is a small store to buy merch.

Yelp
This place is really cute with seating on the deck. Super busy so you know they're good! I tried the pastries today. I got the cream cheese danish, a chugley, a chocolate Danish and a cinnamon twist. Ive had a better Danish in my hometown in md. This was pretty good though. The cream cheese was lacking flavor and the Danish pastry could use a little more sugar in it. I did like how flaky the crusts were though. Still would go back for more. I heard the breakfast omelets or sandwiches were the best around so I will try that next time.

Yelp
Wowza those apple uglies are something else! Huge and deliciously stuffed with cinnamon apples. Bonus if you're able to get one fresh and warm as they come out.

Kim P.

Yelp
Staff was very friendly! The Star, of course, are the Apple uglies. We also bought a donut and muffin, which were delicious! We always make sure to stop during our vacation!
google avatar

Yelp
Really cool place and worth a visit, for sure! The apple uglies are out of this world. Coffee is good too. So glad I got to try this place.
google avatar

Yelp
I planned my entire day around this bakery and it did not disappoint. Get here EARLY and be sure to get an Apple ugly! I got the apply ugly and a bacon, egg and cheese biscuit. The sandwich is huge and the biscuit is perfectly moist and flakey.

Yelp
This place is worth the hype & waiting in line! I visited on a Sunday morning around 9am. The parking lot was slammed full, but managed to grab a spot. There was a long line, but it moved pretty quick. At this cafe, you order your food inside & then go wait outside for them to call your order You select your pastries, donuts, muffins, danishes, & apple uglies at the counter & are handed them at check out. For the breakfast sandwiches & burritos; you order them at the counter, pay & then wait outside for them to call your name with your order. It's a unique cafe since it doesn't have indoor seating. (Well it does, but it's closed off) There are a few tables & chairs outside for seating. Today I tried their: Chocolate Covered Apple Ugly, Sprinkle Donut, Danish, & Breakfast Burrito, Decaf Coffee Everything was so delicious & made with love. The burrito was cooked perfectly, filled with lots of food, & was yummy. I could even taste the salsa! **It important to know that there's a $10 minimum for card purchases. I forgot to grab drinks when I checked out the first time so then I had to buy more because the drinks were under $10. Just a little something important to know! :)

Yelp
This is a take out bakery. You go in, order and wait on the porch for your order. SO had read that orange blossom had a few special items that we needed to try. We both got breakfast sandwiches- his with sausage, mine with bacon. Sandwiches can be gotten on multiple breads, a bagel, or croissants. (I think there may have been other breads, but I just don't remember.) Ours were on croissants and we're really very tasty. Saved half of mine for a snack for later. (Heated well even in a microwave.) Cheese in it seemed like mozzarella and was really thick slice, really good. The bonus was the Apple Ugly. I just couldn't wrap my head around why you would call it that until be broke into it. There is a strip of apples and cinnamon in the dough and then the dough is wrapped around in a ball and baked. It seemed to weigh at least a full pound. When we picked it up, it was still warm. This also tasted good a day later. Parking is a small sandy parking lot. People come and go while some enjoy their morning goodies right there on the porch. It's a cute bakery, has good food and is always busy. Go for the apple ugly.

Yelp
Cute place. I tried a few things off the menu, all of which were very good! Try the apple ugly if you have the appetite. It's huge!
google avatar

Yelp
If your looking for a bakery in OBX this should be your first choice. Get here early if you want dibs on what's supposed to be available.
google avatar

Yelp
Fabulous Bakery, obviously known for the $6 Apple Uglies, but apparently, they make magnificent breakfast sandwiches and other pastries as well. No line, very fair prices, adorable patio, clean, and delicious. Employees are super friendly and happy to be there, but who wouldn't be getting to smell that all day? An absolute must stop when you're in Hatteras/Buxton. I will be dreaming about that Apple Ugly.

Shawn F.

Yelp
EVERYONE who visits the Hatteras Island area needs to stop here for the legendary Apple Ugly....most unusual MUST HAVW when in the OBX. Also has some of the best cinnamon buns on the Island.
google avatar

Sandy G.

Yelp
The apple fritters are good and they are very popular ! My favorite is the iced cinnamon roll ! Give this bakery a try . You will need to get your early to get in line if you want an apple fritter but it's worth it .
google avatar

JL S.

Yelp
The ugly thing was outta this world! I can see why people go back every time they visit. It was HUGE like the size of my head huge. I didn't eat it all but totally worth it!
google avatar

Ema S.

Yelp
Interior is small, but very clean. It can get really crowded with their little patio seating area and no interior seating, but their pastries are literally to die for! They get you what you order quick as possible, so the service is great. They never make a bad pastry, they all are beautiful and delicious
google avatar

Angela J.

Yelp
The Apple ugly was huge and tasted incredible! The cinnamon roll was flaky and the cream cheese frosting on top made it!
google avatar

Andrew L.

Yelp
Picked up two of their "uglies" (basically a giant apple fritter) fresh first thing in the morning. They were *so* delicious fresh and warm! The other sweets and breakfast Sandos I saw others eating looked good, a cool vibe on the patio too! Service was friendly and kind, fast and prompt. Parking was a challenge but not a big problem for me!
google avatar

James M.

Yelp
Apple uglies were so good this morning ! Thank you for such an amazing experience. I heard so many good things about this place.

Sarah S.

Yelp
Stopped for coffee and bought a lot of beautiful pastries! Our first time in the area and this bakery will bring us back

Yelp
I came back here for another visit. Unfortunately, the day I came, they had no apple uglies or donuts. They did not have enough material to make them supposedly. I went with one of their breakfast sandwiches, the shadow. It was a double decker sandwich with 2 layers of ham, bacon, lettuce, tomato, onion, and mayo on their homemade bread. This was very large and stuffed. The key to this was the bread. It was soft and held up all the sandwich filings. The bacon was crisp while the rest of the ingredients seemed fresh. The bread was definitely the highlight here.

Jillian M.

Yelp
Save your money and only stop by if you're after the Uglies. The Uglies are the only good thing about this place, but the rude staff ruined the experience. After spending $130 on food and Uglies, we walked away disappointed because of the terrible customer service. They expect you to know an unposted 'system,' and if you're a first-time visitor, don't expect any help--just attitude. What could have been a nice family meal was spoiled.

Rebekah J.

Yelp
I had seen online that coming here for an "apple ugly" was a must. It was our last stop as we left to go home, and we would have eaten there everyday had we gone sooner. The apple ugly was HUGE and so so delicious. The apple pie filling in the bottom was an unexpected but delightful surprise. We also got a cinnamon roll that we didn't eat until two days later. It was also delicious. Would have never known it was two days old just from tasting it. Service and atmosphere was great. I hope we come back someday. Definitely stop and get an apple ugly!

Stephen G.

Yelp
The food seems to be baked fresh daily. The breakfast sandwiches are out of this world. I must say the service was excellent. The girls are always on point ready to take care of you. Ambience, there is outdoor dining ads and lens to a wonderful brisk morning here in the spring
google avatar

Sara Z.

Yelp
This place rocks! We came in for Sunday breakfast. Ordering is quick and easy, there's a display of all of the fresh pastries and a menu with savory breakfast as well, so they take your order and you pay. Then they bring it out to you on the patio. There are several tables on the patio that are nice and spacious. The food is really good and quite reasonably priced. We had to try the Chuglie, which is a gigantic apple fritter with chocolate sauce. It was sooo good, definitely get it! Then for something savory, I got the egg and cheese biscuit. The biscuit was so flaky and buttery, and it had a lot of cheese, very tasty!
google avatar

Sydney O.

Yelp
These folks have it going on! Apple fritter(Ugly) is the best I have ever had. Breakfast sandwiches have plenty of good quality fillers
google avatar

Emily M.

Yelp
The apple uglies are everything! The uglies are HUGE yet oh so good. If you like pastries the uglies are a must. As other reviewers have said they're like a fritter but instead of apple chunks it has pockets of apple pie filling. Thankfully my husband and I got extra for the trip home and they were just as good the next day. We also ordered breakfast sandwiches which were also good. Given how big everything is I think two adults could have split 1 breakfast sandwich and 1 apple ugly. The Orange Blossom Bakery and Cafe is a must visit in Hatteras.
google avatar

Haley S.

Yelp
Apple Uglies - Amazing. Huge. Weird in the best way. They get even better if you let them sit around on the counter for a few hours. We joke that they "age like cheese," and think the apple filling starts to seep into the fried dough. A must try. Chocolate Double Dipped Donuts - Dank. As a donut snob, I was thoroughly pleased. The perfect size and the icing was just superb. Very fresh. Biscuit Breakfast Sandwich - Really good. The bacon was undercooked, which was pretty gross for me, but the sandwich as a whole was good. I drizzled honey on mine, because why not.

Kayley T.

Yelp
100% worth the hype, favorite donut shop ever! It was very busy but great service. Such a cute shop, we ate on the porch.

Hanowitz F.

Yelp
My wife and I randomly stopped in for a coffee and something to eat. We asked about the huge pile of what looked like large cinnamon Buns. We were then introduced to their apple ugly. OMG it was amazing ! I encourage everyone to wait in line for at least one of these huge delicious treats - you will come back again!
google avatar

Heather L.

Yelp
It is an OBX must !!!! Get there early though ! Opens at 6:30am and stuff goes fast! APPLE UGLIES are the bomb :)
google avatar

Paul N.

Yelp
I had been going to Hatteras for 20 years before finding this. Wow, I have been missing out! A friend suggested the Apple Uglies to me and I was not disappointed, they are delicious. Big enough to share, though I chose not to. There was a line but it moved very fast.
google avatar

Rhonda S.

Yelp
Delicious! Great sweets and good prices and the people Working there are super patient and helpful.

Katie B.

Yelp
We went here three days in a row on vacation! I had the lox bagel (summer special I think) and the apple ugliest are amazing! Staff is super friendly and I love the comfy vibe of this restaurant.
google avatar

Valerie H.

Yelp
My brother delivered some donuts and of course, the apple ugly. This is such a treat! The donuts were both glazed and frosted (with sprinkles) and the apple ugly. Oh my it was delicious with a cup of coffee :)
google avatar

Steve L.

Yelp
We were staying in Buxton and haven't been here in years so we decided to try it. We were not even in the door before the girl behind the counter said Can I get you a breakfast sandwich? A simple hello or welcome would have been enough. We ordered two breakfast sandwiches. We also got an apple ugly and some donut holes. Well the sandwich was average at most. The Apple Ugly was deep fried and well it seemed over cooked. The donut holes were average. This place is normally packed and even though what I ordered was OK, I probably will not be back.
google avatar

Yelp
If you're singing while taking orders, then I kinda love ya. Came to this quaint little bakery because it's so close to our summer beach spot and was delightfully surprised. I had glanced at the reviews but was honestly in a hurry to chill and relax. But since I'm addicted to coffee, I had to search and destroy looking for some. This was the first place that came up when I typed "coffee." I will say that I took one star away, and it was for the coffee. The coffee was ok, nothing special... but everything else after that was like a dream. The apple uglies, as so many reviewers have pointed out, is THE star. Oh, my goodness. They're the size of a small baby and sweet enough to gobble it up like one. LOL there's no way one can possibly eat a whole apple ugly by themselves. They're a fantastic treat to share with someone. The cinnamon buns are equally impressive in size. Good lord! Diabetes here we come! The sweets are delicious and worth the wait in this cramped, hot bakery. In the savory side, we also got breakfast sandwiches. Of which we only got 3 out of the 4 sandwiches we ordered. Didn't notice till after we unpacked our goodies. At $10 a sandwich, missing a sandwich did put a damper on things. The bill ended up being $60, which was reasonable for all we ordered but next time we'll definitely check to make sure we got everything we ordered.

Karen U.

Yelp
Looking for a coffee stop and found this great little spot! We enjoyed a cinnamon twist (like a churro but better!) and split a veggie breakfast burrito. The food was hot and tasty, and the service was quick. Two charming young ladies took our order and were patient and helpful. Locals and travelers both stopped here and we can see why!
google avatar

Marissa K.

Yelp
The donuts are ok, the cinnamon rolls were very good but the ugliest!?! Phenomenal. Definitely worth the hour+ drive from where we were staying in Duck.

Kim P.

Yelp
A visit to this place is a must!! The breakfast biscuits and apple ugly were delicious! The only down side is they aren't open in the late afternoon. The Orange Blossom was probably my favorite place we visited on our OBX trip!
google avatar

Kayla L.

Yelp
We tried an apple ugly this am for the first time after coming to the obx for the past 7 years. I didn't know this place existed until I saw it on fb. The apple uglies are huge. definitely will be stopping again
google avatar

Tim P.

Yelp
We went to Hatteras for our 37th anniversary, the town and beaches and sunsets were amazing. But the biscuits and other treats, and especially the apple uglies were amazing. Some of the best food I have had. Wish I had this place close to My house. We loved it all.
google avatar

Mona N.

Yelp
Apple Ugly was DELICIOUS! Service fast, friendly & reasonably priced. Highly recommended.
google avatar

Daniel M.

Yelp
Orange Blossom is enormously popular with both locals and tourists. It is located on Hatteras Island in Buxton in a building with a lot of character! Be careful pulling in and out of here on a busy corner of Route 12; also the dirt parking lot is usually jammed and gets to be quite a challenge after a serious island rain. Note, the staff is really efficient at taking everyone's order and pushing the process along. Inside can get pretty jammed. Hours are from 6:30 to 11am, so go early as they often sell out of the yummy stuff! The indoor dining area was closed when we were there. The Blossom is known for its Uglies, donuts and breakfast sandwiches. Be forewarned they only have plain bagels so no option here. I enjoyed my sausage, egg and cheese keto style, that is without bagel. I didn't think the coffee was anything special.
google avatar

Jacqueline T.

Yelp
The best Outer Banks recommendation I've gotten so far was to come here and get an apple ugly. Covid-19: I didn't look into ordering online, but I was in and out very quickly right now in the off season. Every one working there had a mask on and I was the only customer in the store. I just got an apple ugly and based on how good it was, I wish I would have gotten more. It's huge. My husband and I split it and my half was the size of a normal apple fritter. It's one of the most delicious pastry items I've had. The fried, glazed cinnamon dough on its own is amazing. Then there is apple filling swirled throughout. I wanted another one immediately after finishing (even though I was stuffed). I would drive an hour just to get this, but if you're staying up north, you'll probably be coming down to the Cape Hatteras area anyway, so make sure to stop here.
google avatar

Bradley D.

Yelp
Great food at a decent price. Menu has a lot of variety. Not really a sit down place, you order and wait on the patio furniture for your food. The baked goods are incredible and the staff is extremely friendly and welcoming, even when super busy.
google avatar

Julie S.

Yelp
Came here after a blog mentioned it and the apple uglies did not disappoint, except I wouldn't call them ugly. They were in bags of 4, still warm and OH SO YUMMY! The other pastries didn't look like anything super special, but the apple uglies were worth it and the staff was friendly.
google avatar

Bob V.

Yelp
A few years ago a good friend had told me, with awe and wonder in her voice, of the massive, wonderful pastry served here - the Apple Ugly. I never forgot about that conversation and, while on a vacay to the Outer Banks, made it a point to seek this cafe out. The first thing you notice about it is it's sheer size - this beautiful monster is roughly as large as the head of a plunger. And if you're a fritter fan like me, the Apple Ugly is pure donut nirvana, kind of a fritter on steroids. Generous ribbons of fragrant cinnamon swirl around the supple, chewy, mildly sweet dough, and the sugar coating is thick enough to provide a satisfying crunch. But it's the fruit that really shines here. Ample spiced apples run through the pastry, like thick veins of gold in the mother lode of a mythic apple mine. The fritter is the king of donuts. And the Apple Ugly is the king of fritters.

Amanda F.

Yelp
Normally would give this place 5 stars as it it my favorite breakfast sandwich place down here. I ignore A-LOT while I stand in line. The flies, the inch of dust on everything there, the sticky drink cooler. It's all never been a problem because everyone is so nice and they are working hard. Until recently. There is a blonde woman in here now working with a voice that could crack glass all the way in Tahiti. I can only say if they don't fix her attitude and her dropping the pastry papers on the floor only to pick them up and use them to grab another pastry I will never return and I will let everyone know why. This woman is out of her mind rude. Like an actual B-word. Orange blossom do something about this woman.
