Orcas Island Winery - Review - Orcas Island - Seattle - The Infatuation

"There’s nothing quite like the American pastime of pounding sauvignon blanc on a lawn. And Orcas Island Winery’s modern barn digs possess all the chic minimalism of a Willamette Valley estate, only conveniently located in Eastsound. The fruit’s from Prosser, the potato chips are from Spain, and Arthur the grumpy winery chihuahua is from a place where growling is the customary salutation. (Don’t worry, he will eventually leave you alone.) Split some snacks, washed down by a bottle of quaffable-enough rosé." - Aimee Rizzo

i’ve photographed a couple weddings at orcas island winery and it’s a lovely spot. the winery has a wide lawn for sipping wine and hanging out, a beautiful venue for weddings or events. it’s intimate without feeling small, stylish without trying too hard. perfect place to visit for a slow afternoon or to rent for a celebration that feels relaxed and local. We were led to believe that there was a good food selection here, but when we arrived it was only bags of chips and a few options for packaged meat and cheeses. The wine flight was pricey($26) and almost good enough, but it is not grown on Orcas Island. The chilled red wine was the best and the others were okay. The location has a nice view, but not much shade and only a port-a-potty for a bathroom.

Lovely place, lovely setting, lovely people, lovely wine, lovely dog Arthur, lovely gifts and goodies! Hubby n I had a great time visiting and tasting. Took home several bottles and gifts to enjoy! Don’t miss this gem!

We had a wonderful time here on our honeymoon. The family running the bar is super friendly and Arthur, the dog, will happily announce your arrival as your drive up. The wines here were great, especially the rosé. The setting is also beautiful and definitely best enjoyed on a nice sunny day.

Google
Cute winery with a pretty view, small area for kids to play but definitely not for little kids or need lots of supervision. The only bathroom was a portable, but the staff was friendly and so was the dog!

Google
We found this adorable winery by accident and I’m so glad we did. We were greeted by the cutest little dog (Arthur maybe 😬). The weather was beautiful and there were a bunch of places to sit outside and enjoy it. Wes was extremely helpful and answered all of my questions. There were some interesting wine that I’ve not encountered before which is always fun. The pours were pretty hefty for a tasting 🎉

Google
Nice, family-owned winery with a variety of seating options and excellent wines. When we were there, there were only four offerings, but two of them made the decision very difficult. The staff was friendly and engaging, and seemed eager to make sure our stay was enjoyable.

We LOVE Wes — my family was so inspired by him and his story. A gem on Orcas island!

Yelp
If you're taking a trip to Orcas Island I definitely recommend this cozy spot along the way. Staff helped us pick out just the right blend. Arthur (the pup) will announce your arrival and guide you to a seat.

Yelp
Beautiful property !!! Dog friendly. Great atmosphere . Just disappointed in wine knowledge of server . I'm old and expect good wine with authentic descriptions of what I'm tasting . Dry wine and I'm a happy camper . Not !!!! The server or owner needs wine tasting experience . It's all about knowing what you're serving . Most are blends which is a red flag . The grounds are beautiful . I'll leave it at that . Enjoy !!!!

Yelp
Great winery with spacious outdoor seating. I visited on a day when they happened to have local artists performing. The music really added to the overall ambiance!

Yelp
We were trying to remember the las time we were on Orcas Island , but the best we could do was between 5 and 10 years ago. Nonetheless, we remembered Orcas Island Winery, and wanted to check it out again. So happy we did! Nestled at the base of Turtleback Mountain in a barn-like structure, they have a lot to offer for a remote setting. They offer four tastes for $25, BUT each "taste" is a half-glass! They offer a fabulous selection of cheese, crackers, bread, olives, chocolates (SERIOUSLY good chocolate!) and more, but they do allow outside food with purchase. The Francalicious Rose' is lightly effervescent, and a good expression of Rose'; we are bringing home a bottle. I also quite liked the Counoise, again, a very unique wine, good body and intriguing taste. However, I liked the 2017 Turtleback (66% Cab Sav, 22% Cab Franc, 7% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot) so much, we had to snag one of those as well. I would give 4.5 stars if I could. So, why not 5 stars? Well, (good for them!) they were sold out of several wines I would have loved to try. And I wish they had a larger covered area outside. Finally, and I'm nitpicking, they have several picnic tables in a lower area; that space could be enhanced 100% by adding some bark chips. Nonetheless, we WILL be back next time we are on Orcas Island!

Yelp
Such a cozy, welcoming atmosphere. The gentleman there was super knowledgeable and kind. It was exactly what we needed during the holiday season. And, of course, the wine was delectable.

Yelp
Orcas Island Winery is a must visit spot. The space is beautiful with a simple and modern feel inside, and lots of outdoor seating for the beautiful views of this magical island. The experience here goes beyond the interesting and delicious wines. The owner, Wes, makes you feel like a local inviting you in for great conversations to pair with his notable wines. Spending the afternoon here will be a memory you will surely not forget!

Yelp
This is my favorite winery on the islands. This place is always been a favorite of mine. We've been here once a year since 2015. We live over 2,400 miles away. It's not that easy to get here. We came here for a few days before taking a cruise. It was so nice to see how much more the new owners put into this place. Unfortunately wasn't able to take any wine back to Pennsylvania with me, due to the cruise and restrictions. All of the wine here is always good. Malbec is my favorite. I go by @grabthembythegrapes on Instagram. This place is amazing, if you haven't been here, you must go here.

Yelp
I've come to the island several times previously but never made it out here - we were driving by and decided to stop on our way to West Beach Resort... we enjoyed it so much we had to come back the next day! The wines are delicious; we especially loved the Coast, a chilled red (I was skeptical of this but liked it so much we got a bottle that didn't make it through the night), and the rosé, my partner loved the Semillon. Far better than I expected! They also sell local cheese & jams (highly recommend both) along with other locally produced wares. The outdoor space is stunning, great viewing for eagles overhead and the wildflowers out in full force at this time of year. And, great place to enjoy with our dog! I'm never coming back to the island without a visit!

Yelp
We had a lovely visit with Wes who we discovered was the owner of the winery. The wine flight was enjoyable, and the conversation even better. I wish we could visit during the summer when this place will be hopping. It's a great place to sit back, relax, and enjoy a glass of wine.

Yelp
Interesting winery. Transitioned to new owners selling off old stock. This is a great setting. Especially with Covid you can space out quite a bit. Flights are not a generous pour and no credit toward bottle purchase. Charcuterie box was days old, less than fresh or interesting and 18 dollars! Plus you had to buy crackers for another 5 dollars. The grapes are all sourced from off of Orcas which is probably a good thing. Go with caution and bring lots of dollars.

Yelp
Are you a wine person? Do you actually savor wine? Then save your time and money, because this was the oddest tasting I've ever done and one of the poorest return for the price. The short version is that when we arrived and sat with our first tastes the owner (a very pleasant man) started lighting candles all around the room. This included at least one lavender scented candle. Seriously, he lit a scented candle while I'm sniffing and sipping and looking for the notes in his wine. You couldn't distinguish anything. We reponded by strolling outside and found every wine mediocre. A couple were solid table wine, but that was it. The final punch line is that our six-taste sample flight cost $25.99.

Yelp
This is a young (father-son owned) winery, and also, the only winery we knew of on Orcas Island. We did a wine tasting ($10 and waived if you make a purchase) of 5 of wines (you can pick from their 7-8 wine list). We enjoyed the Cab the most, but they all tasted young (and the employee did mention that alot). I didn't fall in love with any of the wines, but our group still purchased a bottle. There are very cute memorabilia (imported from around the U.S. for purchase) The place isn't huge but its kept very clean and modern. If you love wine, this is a great 20-30 minute place to stop.

Yelp
Great little Winery- must stop if you like red wines. They had some of my favorites- Syrah & Malbec. $10 tasting but waived if you buy a bottle of wine. Wine was so good both husband & I bought a bottle to waive our tasting fee. Nice and relaxed. Staff was VERY friendly & relaxed. Nice to be in a tasting room that does not feel pretentious! It's about the wine! Limited seating inside (3 tables for 2-4?) but it would be great on a nice day with the doors open

Yelp
Amazing little winery in a postcard setting. Terrific wines, friendly staff and no lines. Spacious, beautiful grounds surrounded by hillside.

Yelp
This winery did not disappoint. Everything from the unoaked chardonnay through the well-balanced cabernet sauvignon were fantastic. The grounds are beautiful and the new owners have big plans for this magical space. Be sure to stop by and pick up some bottles and bring a picnic.

Yelp
Cute little place to try some great wine! Nice outdoor seating area, super friendly and helpful staff. My only wish is that this place was closer to home. Highly recommend!

Yelp
We recently moved to the island. We were greeted so kindly, and very well taken care of. We tasted all the wine. Our favorite ended up being the Malbec, which we normally don't like anywhere else. The flavors are very balanced, but bold at the same time. Love the atmosphere and their plans for the future. It's so open and relaxing. We enjoyed the snacks, and the fact that a lot of local island products are sold there. We will for sure be frequent customers.

Yelp
Great way to spend the afternoon as a family! Not only are the wines great, there is a small play structure for the kids. Thoroughly enjoyed our time at Orcas Island Winery.

Yelp
Very personable experience with some really good wine. I can't wait to go back the winery and the island. I'm looking forward to see what other wines they make over the next few years.

Yelp
VERY nice place! Their Syrah is great as is the Red Blend (all were great but those were my favorites). New owners are wonderful - great story on how they came to be in the wine business - for all the right reasons; family, family and family. The atmosphere is relaxed and they make you feel welcome. If you are on the island for a get-away weekend - make sure you get-away to this winery... not just because it's the only one on the island, but because it's a wonderful little winery, great wine, great people and great atmosphere!

Yelp
Really friendly young family that recently bought the winery. Relaxed, comfortable, and welcoming tasting room. $10 tasting for 6 wines, waived if you buy a bottle, plus snacks and some local goods on sale in addition to the wine. We came in on Memorial Day Monday and it wasn't crowded on a sunny day off, definitely worth a stop!

Crystal J.

Yelp
This place is a gem in Crow Valley, great place to grab some wine and snacks or also amazing to bring the kids and let them play on the playground while you sip some local wine.

Yelp
Found this Great winery on the island and purchased two bottles to bring home. Mixed crowd of locals and couples visiting the island. Very relaxed atmosphere and great wines. This winery processes all their wines right on location and has a good deal of knowledge regarding their product. I would definitely go here again especially in the summer to enjoy a bottle on the outdoor patio.

Cindy M.

Yelp
We visited this hidden gem more than once on our trip to the beautiful island and cannot recommend it enough! The views and property are stunning, and serene. The tasting room is beautiful and welcoming-the perfect combination to relax and enjoy the most delicious wine. We live in Southern California and have visited Napa, Sonoma, Temecula and even the booming Guadalupe Valley, Mexico and can honestly say the wines at Orcas Island Winery are our new favorites. We cannot wait until they ship to California! Thank you to the owners for their hospitality and family friendly environment. Do yourself a favor and make this a priority to visit!

Deborah L.

Yelp
I visited this wonderful winery last weekend. What a pleasant surprise it was to see such a clean, comfortable tasting room full of content patrons. The new owners are very engaging and I found I wanted to cheer them on. They are interesting and I found they were interested in my story. The wine tasting was great fun and I liked the wine and atmosphere so much that after the tasting a bottle of Merlot was purchased to enjoy while sitting out on the sunny patio. This really is a nice way to spend some quality time and enjoy some great wine.

Carol C.

Yelp
Just had a wonderful weekend trip to the island and the highlight was the winery! Wes and Tera's story is inspiring as was the wine. Hard to beat the gorgeous grounds, too. Can't wait to come back and see what these two do! Special spot.

Yelp
Beautiful property overlooking turtleneck mountain. Orcas Island Winery has a great selection of wines and a knowledgeable, friendly staff. We had a lovely afternoon soaking up the beautiful weather and property while enjoying the isla rosé. A must visit on Orcas Island!

Yelp
This was a cute little place to do wine tasting. We got a bottle of red to bring home and really enjoyed visiting with the owner. Very friendly and great atmosphere.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place. It's in a beautiful setting tucked against turtleback mountain between the ferry and Eastsound village. The winemaker is very friendly and the tasting room comfortable. As for the wine I find Sangiovese is my favorite but I do like the unique flavor of their Riesling whereas normally I find them too sweet. It's the only winery you'll find on the island and certainly not one to miss!
google avatar

Leah S.

Yelp
Cute winery with some decent wines! On our recent trip to Orcas we decided to try the winery out after some hiking. The have 5 wines that they pour, 2 white and 3 red. The grapes are imported from the red mountain Ava so they are delicious and not sweet! We liked the petite Verdot the best and walked away with a bottle. If you have a well behaved dog, you can bring it with!
google avatar

Yelp
We stopped by this place during a weekend trip to Orcas. I thought it was perfectly situation out in the hills and we really enjoyed the vibe and the wine. I ended up buying 5 bottles for my stash. A must stop if you're in the area

Yelp
Not being a wine drinker you may find it interesting that I review a winery. Well being the designated watcher/driver I've been to a few wineries. It's all about the experience my wife and sister/brother-law have. They really enjoyed this place. The young lady pouring the wine was friendly and knew her stuff. Relaxed atmosphere is a plus, but we were there in the off season. So I sure its busy during the summer. It would be nice if they could ship their wine to CA. A place to go when your on the island.

Elyse M.

Yelp
This is a new winery with a lot to learn. On a holiday weekend, the winemaker seemed more interested in wine labels for his new brand than talking with customers. As someone who myself went to school for winemaking, I really enjoy talking to winemakers and was very disappointed that he didn't even seem interested in talking about his wine. Having said that, the wine itself was sub par, and the dry Reisling (0% RS) and un-oaked Chardonnay were barely drinkable. Red wines may be the "challenging" wine to make, but you can't ignore the whites. The only reason I gave 2 stars is due to the friendliness of the woman pouring for us.

Yelp
I totally disagree with the below review. I visit a lot of wineries and review many of them, I am a self-proclaimed wine lover and although I am not professional, I am very passionate about the tasting rooms I visit. When I came into Orcas Island Winery, I was very surprised and impressed. The property is beautiful and the building is spectacular. The wine maker, although young, was also very pleasant and knowledgeable too! I had a completely different experience then the other reviewer and have since taken friends there. I totally recommend anyone to check it out and try the wine because it is delicious and worth the trip. Hope this helps anyone on the fence after the other crappy review. Cheers!

Carrie S.

Yelp
Loved this little gem of a winery. Great wine, relaxed atmosphere, great tasting and friendly staff and wine was reasonably priced. Wished we would have bought more!
