My partner mentioned Orenchi a few times in the past, but I've never gotten the chance to try it out until today. I wasn't particularly hungry, but my partner was. We ended up arriving at Orenchi before opening time on Juneteenth, and contrary to what my partner thought, there was no line! He mentioned that there was always a long wait when he first tried it, and I can totally see why after giving this place a try. I guess this place is still quite popular around here since there were a couple small groups waiting before opening time.
My partner ordered The Original "Orenchi Ramen". It comes with two pieces of chasui, green onions, some bamboo shoots, mushroom, an egg, seaweed, and some sesame seeds. He ordered a bowl of extra noodles, and I asked him to order an extra egg for me. For myself, I got the Salmon Ikura Gohan. And we also shared a 3-piece Karaage, Fried Shishito, and Agedashi Tofu & Eggplant Tempura.
The egg I got has one of the most vibrant orange yolk I've ever seen in a ramen bowl around the Bay. A little runny, warm, and tasty when paired with a bit of ramen broth. It was perfection. The Agedashi Tofu was warm, silky, and soft. The outer layer was coming off a bit because it's been soaking in the sauce for a bit, but still a delicious slab of tofu. I did prefer the Eggplant Tempura over the tofu though. The eggplant tempura has a very light batter to it so it was just slightly crispy (the parts not submerged under sauce). It was generous in portion and meaty too. Because the dish itself is made warm, the fresh grated yam (I think) paired well with the ingredients of the dish. As for the Karaage? Also very generous portion wise. I thought 3 piece would be a small appetizer, but these are big pieces of chicken. They're so juicy, and again, the outer batter was thin and crispy. It paired really well with a bit of lemon and the spicy dipping sauce. I thought the Shishito pepper we got was good too, but my least favorite of the appetizers. It doesn't stand out as much as the other appetizers does, but still okay. It's like playing roulette because you don't know if you'll get a spicy one or not, and some of them were pretty spicyyyy. They gave a lot of peppers, so that was a plus to the dish. I think this dish did come out a little oilier than I liked (I know it's fried). As for my main dish - the Salmon Ikura Gohan! This was supposed to be a small bowl, but it was absolutely filling. You get 3 small pieces of smokey, just-cooked, juicy salmon. And a lot of mouth-popping, deliciously-fun, Ikura. You also get to add soy sauce if you like. It was a comforting bowl of rice.
Even though I didn't get a bowl of ramen that they're known for, I did sample my partner's bowl of ramen and it was absolutely delicious as well! The extra side of noodles don't come with broth, so I sampled it as is, and it has a pretty obvious eggy flavor to it. With the broth, the ramen is thick, grabs onto broth well, and chewy. Next time we're back I'll probably go for the Tsukemen if it's still in season.
