The Best Sushi Restaurants in the Twin Cities | Eater Twin Cities

"This longtime sushi staple offers its classic maki specialty rolls and a variety of sushi-inspired appetizers, like takowasa (octopus with cucumbers and carrots in a creamy sauce). Origami has a shaded patio that’s removed from the heavy traffic on Lagoon Avenue and Hennepin Avenue — it’s an excellent respite for outdoor dining in the summer." - Serena Maria Daniels

Delicious authentic Thai food! Highly recommend the vegetable and tofu spring rolls, chicken satay, pad Thai, and fried bananas with red beans ice cream!! Walked in for a late bite and were welcomed by all the staff. Very comfortable atmosphere. Beautiful interior design.

Google
Spark notes: Appetizers 2/5 , Entrees 2/5 , Sushi 5/5 , overall cost for food and experience 2/5. When you see awards on the wall for best restaurant, best sushi, best new restaurant ect but the awards are 10+ years old… that might be telling you something. First we ordered the Shishito Peppers and they were great. Then the fried calamari…that was cold, partially frozen and most of the batter was coming off; definitely not a good. The drunken noodles had cold green beans and you could tell everything was just taken out of the freezer with everything be slightly rubbery. GOOD NEWS the sushi was good! They did an excellent job. We went on a Friday night around 9:30 pm and there was 2 other table of 2. So not super busy.

Yikes. I’ve been here before, in-person, and the food was different. This time I ordered takeout on a Monday and everything tasted weird. The papaya salad is old, soggy, and bland compared to how it tastes fresh. The pad thai was okay, but topped with an old and yucky slice of lime that seems microwaved. It left a strong bitter taste all over my food. The tom yum soup is gross and tastes like it was made from paste— none of the delicate flavors that are supposed to be there. Of course, I don’t know how they made it, but none of this food is worth the $16-18 price point, and that’s for the versions without expensive meat. All the food is extremely full of MSG, which I’m sensitive to but only notice when there’s a lot of it. Unfortunately, I won’t be back. The staff have always been super nice, so that’s a shame.

Google
Hands down the BEST Sushi and Thai place to go when you’re hungry and just want to eat. Very nice vibe and ambience. Manager ( Diane ) and server ( Amy ) is super friendly! The price is reasonable and the food came out quick. Best birthday ever!

Google
What a great staff! And our food was amazing. We had 3 couples and we all tried different apps and main dishes. Everyone loved the food. My husband had the lo mein and said it was the best he ever had. My pad Thai was amazing. And Kim was amazing and so nice. Highly recommend this place!

Google
We had such a beautiful experience here. The chef was working his ass off and made the most incredible rolls. The wait was longer than expected, but the staff went above and beyond to make up for the time. We were given a free order of rangoons, which was delicious. Our server was very personable and enjoyable as was the host!

Dissatisfaction is the only word that comes to mind. Visited this place on yiesday 1/14/25. Called the day before to make sure they were open for lunch. Only to arrive at 11:30 as there was no sushi chef which was the reason we went. Waited an hour and like 15 minutes for him to casually come walking in the door to sloppily throw our food together. We ordered the 10 zen with eel on the side, vegetables spring rolls, shrimp tempura app that came out to the table with no shrimp by the way. Has to ask for it, because we paid for it. Spider which he put the eel inside of and salmon shashimi. The owner was just sitting at the bar like everything was fine and dandy. Never apologized, never offered up any customer service nothing. I felt bad for the host because everything was on her. Then the next day I ordered the vegetable spring rolls again only to get homw and find shrimp on my spring rolls which I’m allergic too. I called and the lady was like I’m so sorry i tell the manager and next time you come in they will be on us but he never called me back. I think it’s odd that you can literally tell me my order at pick up but not verify what’s coming out of the kitchen. I’ll NE RR BE BACK NOR WILL I RECOMMEND THIS DISGUSTING SERVICE TO ANYONE. ITS PATHETIC.

Google
I've been to this location countless times over the years, and I'm sorry to say the quality of food has dropped precipitously over the last 4 years. During my last visit, my party ordered a variety of entrees, most of them staple items, only to be informed the kitchen lacked the necessary ingredients. ...okay... I ordered the drunken noodles, which took 35+ min to arrive and near entirely unseasoned. Service is solid enough, but what once was a reliable B-grade sushi spot is now just a bar that serves subpar Thai and Japanese bar food.

Yelp
We used to hangout in this area every other weekend before covid. Uptown was so lively and party town. There's a parking ramp upstairs from this restaurant. I remember coming to this restaurant when it was owned by a different owner, now current owner has added thai entrees. My favorite is sea laab, must have whenever available. Nice restaurant, patio seating, upstairs seating for private party, dining area between the bar and sushi bar. We were greeted at the door and server was really nice and tentative to what we were looking to try.

Yelp
We came on a Saturday about mid-day and was surprised at how empty it was, we opted to sit on the patio which is perfectly shaded so although it was relatively warm, the shade and Reese every now and then made it for gorgeous lunch weather. I got the shrimp pad Thai and my husband ordered a few sushi rolls. About the price you would expect for uptown, service was great, our server was fun and upbeat :) my pad Thai had about zero flavor though which was very disappointing but my husband enjoyed his sushi rolls!

Yelp
Visited yesterday at noon (right when they opened). Meeting a friend for her bday lunch. Obviously paid to park and was a huge Origami fan back in the day. But left after being told they don't have sushi. No explanation as to why... so I left. Super disappointing.. hope they are able to figure out staffing or inventory issues

Yelp
The service was bad. Staffing was pretty slim. They were out of tap beers and had only one cold sake. The apps were okay - run of the mill premade, frozen apps. We had gyoza, shumai, egg rolls and edamame. The sushi was extremely bland, loosely rolled and a couple pieces had a funky taste. Worst part about it was that the place was pretty grimy and there were tons of fruit flies. In the beer, on the wall, on the table, in the air. Origami used to be my favorite sushi place but it is NOT the same. I won't be back.

Nick L.

Yelp
Do not waste your money here. Lots of awards from previous management/crew that didn't suck. Came in with a group of 6. Sat down and it took about 15 minutes for them to ask us for drinks. Most of us got waters and 2 people got beers. We ordered our food from a different person about 15 minutes later. It took them 30-40 minutes to come back and tell them they did not have those beers at the time. They ordered different beers and it took another 15 minutes for them to come. Almost an hour wait for a beer?? We ended up waiting over an hour for our food to come out and half the food was cold and soggy. During this entire shitty experience they had open mic stand up comedy going on that was absolutely awful the people were just making fun of the 3 tables of people trying to enjoy their cold soggy dinners.

Yelp
It's been a longtime since I've been here. I was interested to see how it might have changed from before. The menu provides a lot of great options that not all sushi restaurants offer. First I appreciate all the belly options available on the menu: yellowtail, salmon, bluefin. I didn't order any of these, but the offering feels like it sets it apart. I ordered the Sake flight and was really happy with my decision. I'm still relatively new to Sake, so the flight allowed me to experience the spectrum of it's offering. The fried rice was very good. The rice was browned, but I especially liked the shrimp. It was cut up, which was actually really nice. Often a shrimp piece is too big for a whole bite. Instead, these were divided in half or thirds. No bite of shrimp was overwhelming. The nigiri was ok. There was an aoili serviced on top of my salmon nigiri. Some people might enjoy this, but I don't want anything to detract from the taste of the fish. I could go without. When ingredients are added unnecessarily its sometimes a red flag.

Yelp
Really delicious sushi - we got a bunch of fun rolls and a couple great sides. Very yummy cocktails. The staff was all absolutely delightful - attentive, and a joy to be around. We'll definitely be back!

Yelp
I'd like to do 3.5. It was Saturday 6:30. Moderately busy. Service was very Icey. Server not too interested. Sat at sushi bar and got zero facial response when I smiled and told Sushi chef we asked for a handroll instead of regular... they just acted annoyed. The ebi/shrimp shumai app was delish! As was the fried tofu dashi! Unfortunately the miso cod was a let down and had a ton of bones And not a lot of flavor. Won't rush back

Yelp
Do not order this restaurant on Grubhub. They messed up my order. Did not get what I ordered. Quality of food was not good.

Dimitri S.

Yelp

Yelp
Excellent service and food!!! I'll be back! l had the spring rolls and curry rice. I can't believe I forgot to take pictures. The Thai tea is also delicious.

Yelp
Probably one of my favorite ramens I have had in the Twin Cities so far! As for the sushi, it was just okay, not the best but not the worst. The pricing is pretty average for ramen and sushi, however the sushi was just a tid bit higher than other sushi bars I've been to in the cities. It was nice that they had so many options for so many different people! Lots of vegan and gluten free items. The only sad thing was that we waited over an hour for food (appetizers and all). Not a place I would go back to for sushi but I would go back for the ramen! My spicy miso ramen ($14.25) was super tasty and I love the noodles they used. My spicy tuna hand roll was good, but it was super pricey just for one ($7.75). They charged me the spicy tuna roll price :(
google avatar

Yelp
Cool give good music. Bartender cool. First time cute litle patio vibe. Good was good I ordered a roll. (Not sure what roll). It was good, but came enrolled made it difficult to eat.

Yelp
A favorite of my Minneapolis family and it again served up delicious sushi and other Japanese delicacies. I'm spoiled since I live in Honolulu with fresh sashimi and lots of Japanese restaurants but the agedashi tofu at Origami was the best I've ever had. The sushi was fresh and delicious too. Nice that we could all sit outside too.

Yelp
Food was amazing! Came here with a group of 9, and service was very attentive. Our group shared, calamari, Phai Thai, coconut rice, galbi, lo mien, sushi and more and each and every dish was amazing. Close parking right next to the restaurant, w good crafted cocktails. Our server and runner were communicating well and we each got the right order & then some. I beyond recommend their pan fried potstickers and Thai noodles! Their sushi is also very delicious.
google avatar

Ariel L.

Yelp
Still a good place to have sushi but based on the price and taste, it sadly doesn't deliver like the original Origami in downtown. Service is still good and they have a good team that does their best to serve you and make your meal worth it. Huge bar and a full bar! We had the sashimi platter, seared tuna salad, ramen, and takoyaki. Sashimi was good but the rest was just average and the takoyaki seemed to be fried. Hard to find street parking but there is a parking garage attached. Overall, an average experience.

Anthony K.

Yelp
Excellent service and vibes are immaculate! Would definitely recommend. You won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Yelp
Do not order take out from here if you are wanting a Poke Bowl. I specifically put my small control next to it so you can see how tiny this is. This is supposed to be an entree and it's as small as an appetizer. The miso soup was in a same container and filled 1/3 of the way and the prices were outrageous. Super pricey for basically and appetizer meal. I am all about supporting local restaurants and I have but to get fooled like this sucked. I'll be ordering my Poke Bowls from Aloha Poke Co which is what they are known for.
google avatar

Yelp
I ordered in from this place and it was pretty good! I got the Age Dashi Tofu and the Yakisoba. The soy sauce dashi came separately from the tofu. Just the tofu alone was very satisfying and filling. The tofu was sooo soft I loved it. The Yakisoba was so yummy! The one I got came with tofu and mushrooms and the portion size was huge! I would recommend getting the chili oil with the Yakisoba.

Matthew B.

Yelp
Worst place i've been too in a long time. Worst service i've ever dealt with... servers don't even know the menu, messed up multiple of my groups order, took over 2 hours for me to get my food and over 30 minutes just to get told they were out off the beer i ordered. They had some "comedy" show going on as well and most of the acts were just attacking our group and one person threatened to jump us in the parking lot. DO NOT COME HERE.

Kevin A.

Yelp
Food was very delicious! Great customer service! This places treated my group like home, very welcomin!

Hello

Yelp
The amount of times we had several items brought out that were wrong was scary. Guy working the bar was great but it was just horrendous. I understand there was only 1 cook but that wasn't announced until 1 hour in. I would have personally shutdown the restaurant if I do not have the staff the run it than risk losing customers forever. Sorry staff you have a bad owner. Hope you guys find better jobs.

Yelp
Searched yelp for two criteria: 1. Sushi 2. Dog friendly patio Origami met both criteria and was close to where we live. Drink specials were good for happy hour (although check your receipt we had to have the beers fixed as they didn't ring up on happy hour). The sushi was a dollar or so off normal prices so a nice perk to our patio drinking but probably not the best dish happy hour. We enjoyed it though and the service was great. Entire patio is shaded in the afternoon which was nice for a July evening.

Yelp
We were a little apprehensive based on the star rating but it was delicious! We ordered a couple drinks, a few small plates and a couple rolls to get a good feel of the food. Drinks - we ordered the gin gin mule - very yummy, not terribly strong. I can't remember the name of the other drink but it was a sake drink with muddles cherries and ginger ale! So good. You could taste the sake but the tartness from the cherries and the brightness of the ginger beer were perfection. Appetizers/small plates - shishito peppers were delicious- maybe could have been roasted a bit longer but flavor was amazing. The ebi shumai(shrimp buns) were also delicious. Very flavorful and the dipping sauce was a perfect compliment. The kalbi beef short ribs with kimchi were tasty, I could have eaten a lot more!!! Roll - spicy tuna - may be one of the best spicy Tuna rolls I have ever had... fresh and delish with the nice crunch of the pickled carrots. End of Summer Roll - again so fresh tasting and that summer sauce was drool worthy.

Yelp
2 things you need: Sake plus Ramen (or Sushi) and that's all you need to feel warm and fuzzy (and full) inside.

Yelp
Well ,coming from my city on the bay this place has the freshest fish considering there is no ocean! Very happy coming here in the past. Tonight however with my daughter not so much. We had the sashimi platter chefs choice ( not disappointed), however it came with a 1salad and 1miso soup. This person could have said SOMETHING! The menu tells you what you get with it, soup and salad. So two people sharing 15 cuts of wonderful sashimi I thought we would each get a salad and soup per person ‍.Had this person said just so you know...., can you imagine sharing a spoon with a co-worker? Our server ( not giving out persons name) seemed bored , didn't care about our experience. It was the mannerism, we entered and were greeted welcomely , and then MEH! From start to finish. No exchange whatsoever? Perhaps because, well I don't want to speculate, Back to the fish fresh and delicious- Look I understand We're all tired of this covid business- BUT DINING out is a rare treat these days , a theatrical experience and when the show , dinner ( service) is meh? You leave feeling empty. 4 stars for food and the preparation of it only tonight

Yelp
They reopened under new ownership and it's fantastic! Sushi is very fresh and worth stopping by!
google avatar

Dave K.

Yelp
My new go-to for Japanese food in Minneapolis! It looks like super chain or typical mall sushi spot from the outside but once you order it's solid. Salad with creamy miso dressing - 4 delicious stars. Almost impossible to get 5 stars unless you do something different. Miso - good. Saba shioyaki - f'ing legit! Big fresh piece of fish. Grated Daikon!!! Ups the rating! 5 stars. Gyudon - very good. A little too much rice. Rice was asi asi. Still very good authentic flavors and thinly cut meat. Yakiniku plate - so good. My mom used to make it like this. Delicious! 5 stars. Tekka maki - very good 4 stars. All in all a very good Japanese restaurant in Minneapolis. If you're in the hood (uptown) make it happen. If you need to travel - pass.

Yelp
We had heard good things about Origami so we figured we should try it out. The food was delicious, but we were being swarmed with fruit flies the entire time. One landed in my drink, others were landing on our food and the table. I wish I could say all nice things about this place because the staff is very kind, the place itself is cute, and the food is good. Just was disgusted by all the flies.

Ted H.

Yelp
Ambiance is nice, good outdoor space. However the sushi is spectacular. The chef is absolutely best in class. They started us with a sashimi belly platter. King salmon, hamachi, Norwegian Salmon Kampachi and then the Otoro was delicious. Moving to the rolls, The "Leo's" interpretation of triple toro roll maybe addicting. Then the night unraveled into sushi bliss! He made a roll that was topped with a fermented plum and a Japanese flower loaded with fish. After 5 rolls in total (spicy devil, tropical and March madness) our group agreed never have we had this technique and flavor combination at a sushi restaurant. The hot food is authentic. Recommend the green curry with chicken and chicken fried rice. The service was attentive and knowledgeable. Good selection of sake and whiskey's
google avatar

Mark U.

Yelp
We have been to a lot of sushi places around the US, this one, as crazy as it sounds, is top 3 we've had. The fish was so fresh, preparation was done right and the service was great. We left giggling.

Al S.

Yelp
got my entire order wrong. other people that came in way after got their food before. server never checked in to see if we needed refills, or how food was. Never coming back tbh

Kelly G.

Yelp
We really enjoyed our experience and loved everything we had! We started with the crab rangoons and they were so delicious - tasted really fresh. Our drinks were super tasty too, I would definitely order the mango martini and the lychee martini again. We got the kani salad which was so good, and our rolls were amazing too! Super cute place and our server was great too. I will definitely be returning!

Yelp
A kind of disappointed... The squid is not fresh enough so the chef put on some perilla trying to mitigate the fishy smell. Fresh squid should taste sweet but this ones are just too fishy. The oyster taste like nothing. Again, fresh ones should taste a bit of sweet. The surf clam is obviously overpricey. I thought they may use live ones not pre-cooked ones (onely half of a whole one)that are cheap. Also, it is a bit of dry. I suppose the clam was exposed to air for too long. Sweet shrimp and eel are okay. I can't identify whether the eel is pre-cooked in a factory or cooked on site but at least the quality is consistent. If you like eel, you can find them in Asian market( 20+ dollars for a whole cooked eel taste exactly like what you normally eat at restaurant. The only highlight is the otoro. The size of fish is bigger than average. Tips: Otoro is good with rice but for sashimi you may go with chu-toro.(Otoro is too greavy to have it alone) First semester in the U, I have already missed the good and inexpensive seafood in Qingdao.Gona to try Billy's sushi next week. Any recommendation for restaurants served fresh seafood with reasonable price?
google avatar

Kelli D.

Yelp
Ordered spicy tuna, California and Dragon rolls to-go. The container was so light we checked to make sure they didn't forget a roll. Nope. They're just super small. Small rolls that cost, on average, a dollar more than other places. The rolls were poorly wrapped and fell apart. Flavor-wise they just weren't that great. There was also some weird $3 tip/fee that they automatically added to the bill. I didn't even realize it when I signed the slip. I think it was for the rolling of the sushi or some such b.s.

Mat M.

Yelp
worst restaurant experience I've had in my 46 years on the planet. we left without being served, I'm assuming because of our appearance (we were dressed for a goth/punk show across the street.) it's the only explanation I can come up with seeing as there were only two tables seated when we arrived, one of which had already received their food. one table was seated after us and directly behind us. they were served before we'd even been given menus. after waiting for 20 minutes we got one menu and waters. that's the last time either of the two servers approached our table. I watched one of the servers stare at us and then go back to playing on her phone. the other one also looked in our direction multiple times and just went back to bs'ing with a guy sitting by the bar instead. (he didn't appear to be a customer) we sat there for 20 more minutes before taking our money down the street to boludo and had some of the best pizza we've ever had. my partner is the gm of a successful restaurant. I've worked in the restaurant industry. this place was dead. we were either intentionally ignored in hopes we'd leave or the staff is absolutely incompetent. screw this place. I wouldn't step foot in this place again even if they offered to comp our meal.
google avatar

Bruce K.

Yelp
Three years later, back to Origami but inside this time. No dog but the same friend. We sat at the bar. Good service from the bartender who not only kept the water glasses refilled, but knew when to bring fresh beers too! After yesterday's adventures in greasy food and booze, dinner tonight had to be much easier. And so it was, starting with a platter of shrimp shumai, which was nice and light. A good start. Main course, beef udon soup. Rich broth, lots of tender sliced beef and lots of noodles. A little sriracha in there to kick up the flavor and good to go. My tummy is now completely settled, even with the two Sapporo beers that I consumed. Good good options, good service, nice and quiet bar. It's still great here and very enjoyable.
google avatar

Rachel R.

Yelp
Great service, fair prices, delicious food. Serving size was great as well. Vibe of the restaurant is relaxed and inviting. Feels upscale but no dress code
google avatar

Shane N.

Yelp
Decent food, and atmosphere. They have a good bar also. I spent quite a bit more more here than I normally do, and their variety of rolls wasn't too extensive. No complaints overall, but I didn't leave here ready to rant and rave about it. It was fine.

David M.

Yelp
Origami adds a 4 percent surcharge to any bill paid with a credit card. Origami knows that nearly everyone pays restaurant tabs with credit cards. The surcharge is a cheesy, back-water stratagem to gouge customers on their way out the door. Perhaps if customers started paying Origami with bags of pennies it would rethink this selfish, grasping surcharge.
google avatar

Helen T.

Yelp
Origami is a really nice spot located in uptown. The people there are very friendly and personable. I love the atmosphere because it's very spacious and the decor is very interesting. Food is very yummy as well. I love the tako waso and there's more things that you should try. They have a great happy hour and great ramen. I honestly have been there numerous times and haven't tried their sushi there. My recommendation is during the winter try not to sit too close to the main doors. Cold air comes in every time the wind blows in.
google avatar

Terri L.

Yelp
There used to be an Origami in North Loop and I would go there as it super close to me. Now this is the only location. I personally only go to Uptown unless I am REALLY up to driving in Uptown for hangouts or food outings. Origami is great place to have a date or celebrating. If you are ever looking for a Sunday happy hour, come here to Origami. You are able to get many items in the 4-6 dollar range. I personally love getting Salmon & Avocado Roll and the Hamachi & Avocado Roll from here as the fish taste fresh here. Also they have great appetizers if you want some fried options. Some of my favorites are the Takoyaki, Chicken Karaage, and Gyoza. The service is great they give a hot towel and their is plenty of seating both indoors and outdoors. The service is pretty solid with being attentive and not overdoing it as well.
google avatar

Gabe S.

Yelp
Came here for HH on a weekday. To my surprise, the place wasn't crowded at all. We ordered tako wasa, takoyaki, and tako kara-age (yes, we love octopus). Tako kara-age wasn't particularly special. Nothing much to say except that. Tako wasa, however, was fantastic and recommend ordering a glass of sake to go with it. We were a bit lazy deciding what rolls to order, so we went ahead getting one of each of the thick rolls in the HH menu. My favorite was definitely salmon skin maki. The skin was grilled to perfection and the kaiware complemented the flavor very nicely. Other rolls were pretty good as well. They weren't too spicy, so we could actually taste the fish.
google avatar

Jodi V.

Yelp
Food was ok, server was not super nice. We got an app that we weren't a huge fan of and the server didn't love that we asked her to just take it.

Ben R.

Yelp
Origami used to be a pre-eminent sushi destination in Minneapolis, not so any more! We dined in, ordered a mix of rolls, and sashimi and miso soup. The rolls were flavorless, hardly any fish, so disappointed, you can get better sushi at a strip mall, same with miso so dead and flavor less. Stay away from this place!
google avatar

Garrett Z.

Yelp
We were looking for a sushi place and Yelp led us to this little hideaway place in Uptown. We really liked the all day Sunday happy hour menu and my wife and I tried a few different rolls: Spicy Crab, Salmon and Avocado, Californian, and some Chicken Gyozas. Everything was prepared fast and it was very fresh. It was cool to be able to watch them make the sushi right in front of you. The joint was pretty packed even with it being an early Sunday evening. That says good things about it. It is also centrally located in Uptown, so it is only a short walk away from Lake Calhoun and surrounding shopping. The prices were pretty reasonable for a sushi restaurant, we will probably come back and be a little bit more bold with our choices next time around.
google avatar

Kaitlin N.

Yelp
We were in Uptown to go out to a bar and decided to stop in for a quick dinner. I ordered the deluxe sushi platter. It was great. I chose the spicy yellowtail maki roll and the nigiri was Chef's choice. I don't usually order chefs choice at places I haven't been but I decided to here and I was really happy! The chef chose an assortment of nigiri that I love and the fish was very fresh. The deluxe sushi platter comes with a miso soup and a side salad. The soup was flavorful and the side salad was really good, I loved the dressing and it was a good portion. My husband ordered chicken yakisoba and he enjoyed it. We sat upstairs which felt like a private dining room and we had good service. They had a really nice appetizer menu also. Next time I'm going to make sure and try some of the appetizers. I recommend stopping in for sushi here.

Yelp
This was a cute little place located in the heart of uptown. I am a sushi enthusiast. Have tried many sushi dishes at various locations in the twin cities. I have mixed feelings about their sushi dishes, mostly because of the prices. They were very accommodating to our large group of about twenty people. The service was professional and attentive to everyone! Their cream cheese puffs or wontons were amazing! They were perfectly crunchy and tasty and popped right in your mouth. Only problem I had was that they didn't give you enough. Miso soup was also excellent and tasty. They had many options of sushi rolls to choose from. Don't get me wrong, it was good. I just have a hard time paying $20 for a roll of sushi that isn't out of this world.
