The Best Restaurants, Bars, and Cafes on Mackinac Island | Eater Detroit

"With some 13 fudge shops on the island, there’s no better place on the planet to be a “fudgie” (that’s Northern Michigan slang for “tourist”) than Mackinac Island. Despite some confusing signage down the way, Murdick’s location at 7363 Main Street was the very first place on the island where fudge was made, and it is as charming as ever today. Stop in and watch these candy magicians as they stir cream, sugar, butter, and more in a massive, bowl-shaped copper kettle, pour the hot slurry onto marble tables to cool, and then put their paddles to work flipping and turning it into the blocks of fudge that are perfect for taking home to that pet-sitter." - Stacey Brugeman

There’s 2 locations on the island. They both have fresh fudge that they make/work on right in front of you. Unlike some other fudge shops on the island, they only let you sample the fudge samples they put out… other shops let you sample anything you want. Nonetheless, I find Murdick’s fudge is softer, creamier, and more tasteful compared to the other options, like Ruybas. They had a special going on, but 4 get a 5th free for $45. Otherwise each bar is about $10. Go try their fudge samples it’s worth! 4 stars because ultimately all the fudge is pretty overhyped and overpriced, and the workers were kinda rude.

Very good smell of the fudge. The making process is also open to watch. I tried the German Chocolate. However, it was extremely sweet and heavy.

Google
THE original Mackinac Island fudge! Got to see some of it being made up close and personal. Ordered five different flavors here. It was mostly a birthday present for my mother, but my friend and I had some their pure chocolate fudge, and I must say it did not disappoint! My mother and aunt were both impressed by fudge as well (it was so good that she let me keep some so she wouldn't eat too much, even though it was her present!). The best part is that I had a coupon here, and unlike many other places on this tourist trap island, they were willing to make a deal with me since I was buying in bulk. If there is one stop you make on your trip to Mackinac, this is IT! Highly recommended (though next UP trip I will probably stop at their St. Ignace location)!

Google
So fun to watch them making the fudge. The smell was just amazing. Lovely old style shop. 🤩🍫

Google
Original Fudge place on the island. Evidently dates back to the wife of a worker on the Grand Hotel. Fudge was good. Atmosphere is great. Can get crowded. Overall, part of the Island experience!

Google
Got 3 great flavors on our trip to the island. They even gave us a military discount which we greatly appreciate!

Google
The amazing smells emanating from this shop lured me in. It was neat to watch the fudge making process. Also, the fudge was top notch.

UPDATE: I have revised my review to 5 stars!!This Fudge is worth the price!! Yum yum!! ❤️ MF reached out the next day and went above and beyond to rectify the below issue. I really appreciate good customer service! Thank you!! PREVIOUS: I received my shipment of fudge today, I was soo excited to try!, however it was Full of ants. Some pieces were very hard like they had been shelf sitting for a while. I had to throw it all out, I checked my porch but they were not my ants. I tried calling but no answer…. ☹️

Yelp
Excellent fudge shop! One we will return to in 2025, when we stay at Mission Point. High quality ingredients and unique flavors make it a favorite!

Yelp
First time on the island. We took a right on Main Street and came across Murdick's so my husband went in. We wanted fudge with peanuts, but they didn't have any. At first I thought maybe because of peanut allergies but then I saw peanut brittle in the window of the store front. The unfriendly employee recommended peanut butter so we took that. I will say it was delicious. You know how rich fudge is so it lasted us a few days. Giving only 4 stars because of the staff.

Yelp
I was really in the mood to buy some fudge when I walked in to Murdick's. They had out samples of their maple flavored fudge. I tried this flavor but I did not like it, but I do not like maple flavored things in general. I asked if I could sample any of their other fudge and they said no since they already had samples of one flavor out. I am not going to buy fudge without trying it first. So, because they would not let me sample any other flavor, I left with nothing. I feel like everyone we encountered on the island was friendly expect for the people who work at Murdick's. What a shame.

Emily C.

Yelp
Sarcastic employees. One flavor to sample PER GROUP. were given attitude and sarcastic responses when asking a question about the fudge.
google avatar

Jennifer M.

Yelp
We visited the original location on the island and my hubby got the toasted coconut fudge and he said it's the best he's ever had. It truly is melt in your mouth. The service was great and the ambiance felt like a little hometown shop. I highly recommend stopping in this original shop on the island. I also appreciated how they packaged up the fudge.
google avatar

Kassy K.

Yelp
The vibes are just kinda not there compared to the rest of the shops on the island. The other shops you walk in and the employees are ready to help and smiley but I went 2 of the Murdick's and in both they had negative attitudes and did not seem like they wanted you to be in the store. Had a dog in a backpack (not on the ground) and they commented no dogs in the store which is fine but the way it was said was rude and off putting instead of just a polite statement. Of note as well, you cannot sample the fudge, only the free sample they already have out
google avatar

Lisa T.

Yelp
Oh my goodness the fudge here is amazing! Super fresh, melts in your mouth, and so flavorful. We chose to just get one slice and went with the chocolate coconut..yum!! I also got the salt water taffy which was a nice surprise in a fudge shop..probably the best I've ever had. The staff were very patient with my indecisiveness and helped me decide on a flavor.

Yelp
Tried various fudges on Mackinac Island and Murdick's was our favorite! I mean they had the classics AND some really fun seasonal adds like PUMPKIN SPICE. The basic in me could NOT resist. The Pumpkin Spice Fudge itself was the perfect texture and just the right amount of warming spice. I love that a 125+ company continues to innovate but keeping up their premium quality!

Luna W.

Yelp
The workers were so nice and lovely and extremely friendly. They held good conversation even as they worked swiftly and efficiently and the store itself was just so welcoming and I did not want to leave. I'm not even a huge fudge fan but I would buy fudge from there anytime. All I can say is I hope everyone working there lives the rest of their lives in charitable prosperity and never have another bad day
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent service. Very helpful. Fudge was good and store was clean and with nice presentation compared to others. Fudge is delicious!!!

Yelp
Let me be honest. As I was researching the in and outs of Mackinac Island so I could plan our days and write out a checklist, fudge was mentioned non stop. Seriously, the love of fudge was real here on Mackinac Island as there are fudge shops literally steps from each other. Being who I am, I had to try "the original" first and foremost. I thought it was over hyped but as I walked towards this shop, the aroma of real fudge wafted into my senses and I knew I had to spend my money here. Are you skeptical? Try a free sample! As they spread, scrape, fold, and cut the delectable and smooth fudge, there are pieces you can taste freshly from the marble table. We were fortunately enough to try Double Chocolate Caramel Sea Salt, Double Chocolate Dark, and Chocolate Pecan. Well, fortunate as in we kept going in there to buy more haha! It was not a fluke. We even went to other fudge shops to sample theirs and then we had to come back to "the original". Yes, it's just THAT good. We went two days and then we also ordered fudge and had it shipped to our family members. Don't miss out on this yummy slice of Mackinac Island's fudge that has been a part of their history! Our favorites: Hubby: Triple Chocolate Espresso Myself: Double Chocolate Caramel Sea Salt & Espresso Maddy (12 yo): Double Chocolate Dark & Espresso James (7 yo): Chocolate Mint Linc (3 1/2 yo): Chocolate Cherry

Yelp
What a great little shop. Getting to watch them making the fudge. And buying some to take home.
google avatar

Yelp
We tried all five brands of fudge open on Mackinac Island at the start of the 2022 season, we found Murdick's fudge to be grainy and all the non-chocolate fudges tasted strongly of vanilla.

Lillie M.

Yelp
This place is amazing the workers are so sweet and they really care about their customers. We stood in there for and hour watching them make fudge and they all had very cheerful and sweet attitudes. They managed to make my friend and I day. The fudge was amazing and they gave us some samples to try. Overall they are amazing people and the manger is running it right.

Brandy S.

Yelp
Amazing fudge made right in front of you! Price is comparable around the island. Friendly staff.

Yelp
Had read the fudge was delish ... the arch, butterfly house, Grand Hotel and fudge were my island bucket list. There were a few fudge places right on that main strip. When we walked down the street from where the ferry dropped us of .. the smell of fudge was heavenly. We didn't do the bike or horse carriage .. we walked it. So I felt justified in the ice cream and fudge. We got the ice cream elsewhere and the fudge here. We sampled several and bought 3 slices. We ate it over the next several days. I had to smile at the negative reviews of the customer service ... its a candy shop .. most of the employees were young .. have you never dealt with millennial's before? One said their questions were answered sarcastically. lol what serious question is there about fudge.

Mary H.

Yelp
Service was great here on Mackinac Island, but the fudge was a bit of a disappointment. We bought five flavors and with consistency I would say they were not super fresh, the texture was a bit grainy, and the flavors were less intense than I expected especially for caramel add ins. Beth's fudge in Grand Marais was so much better.
google avatar

Ryan S.

Yelp
Since fudge is a big thing on Mackinac Island I decided to give Murdick's a try and it was everything I expected it to be. Absolutely delicious. Watching them make it in the shop was pretty cool too.
google avatar

Sarah K.

Yelp
OK - did you even go to Mackinac if you didn't purchase fudge? This is the classic fudge shop on the island but it's also the best. Staff is great - super friendly and helpful when you just can't make up your mind. But seriously, anything you get here is going to be yummy.
google avatar

Jack S.

Yelp
Still the best fudge on the island. So cool to watch them make the fudge in front of you on the large marble tables. Staff was really friendly and helped me select 3 bricks of fudge. Delicious. Not going anywhere else for fudge.

Abby P.

Yelp
As someone who doesn't live in the great state of Michigan anymore, having Murdick's delivered to me in California was the best! The fudge arrived within a few weeks of ordering and it was still fresh and is delicious. Thank you Murdick's for bringing a little slice of home to CA

Emma C.

Yelp
The BEST fudge on the island!!! This fudge isn't like the rest. It has real ingredients as well as a really fresh taste to it. The best fudge I've ever tasted In my life!! This place is legit.
google avatar

Jennifer C.

Yelp
Couldn't leave Mackinac Island without getting some fudge. We entered the closest fudge shop next to us and it happened to be Murdick's. They had a 3 fudge special deal (basically $24.50 for 3 fudge of your choice). We got the turtle, traverse city cherry, and vanilla chocolate chip. We were surprised with how rich and creamy the fudges were. As someone who likes cherries, the traverse city cherry fudge was my personal favorite. The turtle was the second best and the vanilla chocolate chip was decent but not super flavorful like the others. The pieces are quite heavy so one piece of fudge will last you a while.

Yelp
The fudge was to die for! You cannot visit Macinac Island without trying out their famous fudge. This place has been making their fudge on the island for over 100 years. And it definitely shows on the taste and quality. You cannot walk past the street without smelling their amazingly chocolatey fudge smell. Definitely recommended to any visitors of the island.

Yelp
If you are looking for a gift for someone special DO NOT order from this store! I placed an order in November for delivery of both packages to arrive before Christmas. One package arrived on time but the other, a larger order never arrived. I had planned on that package for my in-laws. With out the gift I had to figure out what to get my in-laws,at the last minute. I reached out via e-mail and text at least 10 times, never hearing back. Well ...I did get a text one of those times and the customer service rep said shed get back with me but that didn't happen. I have been a customer of Murdick's for years but will never buy from this store again.

Scott J.

Yelp
Tried both Joann's and Murdick's while on the island and am torn about which is better. I prefer traditional chocolate fudge and got a slice from both. Both are delicious and really depends on what you are going for. I found Murdick's to have a better chocolate flavor and Joann's to have a better creamier texture. I recommend you try both while on the island!
google avatar

Hannah M.

Yelp
The fudge is so delicious! We had chocolate, chocolate and peanut butter, and dark chocolate with caramel and sea salt.

Candace S.

Yelp
Amazing customer service - I am really impressed by them.
google avatar

Lauren C.

Yelp
Great place for some original style fudge. Everyone recommended we come here and I am glad we listened. We came in late September and this store was still super busy. I like how they have on display the fudge making and they handed out samples. Really gives you an old school type of vibe. They also have more than just fudge there such as brittle. They have fresh fudge and also to go boxes that are ready to go. I would have given 5 stars but the lady helping us was kind of over it because it was later in the day so she really didn't help us just try and rush us along. Overall a great experience would highly recommend.
google avatar

Diane N.

Yelp
I placed an order for an assortment of fudge. I received a text from Fedex telling me it had been delivered. No package was found. (I was home at the time. No time for it to be stolen.) And the text said it was delivered at 1:40p.m. and it wasn't even 1:00p.m.. I immediately sent an e-mail to Murdick's. I received a response right away. (Fedex was not helpful at all) I wish the person handling this problem had given me his/her name. They were fantastic, apologized profusely, and promised to resend my order. Well, two days later my order arrived! Hubby already dove into the fudge, so I can also tell you it's as good as we remember when we visited Mackinac several years ago. Wish I could give them more then 5 stars.

Cynthia P.

Yelp
DO NOT ORDER ONLINE . It's now Dec. 29 and the Christmas gift orders I placed on Dec. 14 still have not arrived. Called customer service and got voice mail. Left detailed message and got no response. Sent 2 emails with no response. I'm now wondering if I got taken.

Brian E.

Yelp
Worst company to do business with. Can't get ahold of anyone they won't return your email or your voice messages. Got ahold of a gal finally and her response was do you want your money back. I told her no and she assured me my order would go out the next day (4 days ago). Have tried several times since to contact someone but have not. This order was placed 3 weeks ago. Stay clear of this business!!!

Em S.

Yelp
I'm really disappointed...we were given 1 sample each and only when we asked for another flavor were we THEN told that we only get 1 sample per person?? How am I supposed to compare two flavors? Also, I may have thought a lot harder about my sample choice if I knew that I only got 1! That's nuts. You should get 2 samples just to decide.
google avatar

Jeremy S.

Yelp
Employees were sarcastic and unwelcoming as we asked questions about Fudge and its origin. Despite the staffs unfriendly attitude we purchased some fudge which tasted half par at best. If they truly are the inventors of fudge as the fudge man claimed, their fudge making skills are weak. We recommend Kilwins!
google avatar

Christy G.

Yelp
Fun atmosphere- friendly staff. Purchased walnut chocolate fudge and it is delicious.
google avatar

Yelp
Using an original recipe from 1887, the first store in Traverse City, MI was owned and operated by Doug Murdick and his family in 1964. Murdick's Fudge later expanded onto Mackinac Island and they even have an East Coast operation on Martha's vineyard well! They are the original. And considering that fudge is such a specialty on Mackinac Island, we knew we had to try them. As you enter into the shop, you can smell the sweetness in the air! They have a wide variety of flavors on display. And it's always fun to watch them actually make the fudge. Michigan Maple Walnut The maple walnut was certainly sweet, but had a nice hearty undertone from the maple and substantial nuttiness from the walnut. Nice. Chocolate Macadamia Nut The chocolate macadamia nut was creamy and simply melts on your mouth. German Chocolate Cake The German chocolate cake was one of my favorites due to the crust, which had coconut, pecans, and a caramel top. Yum. Original Chocolate The original chocolate was inherently creamy and sweet - you could feel a tingling in your teeth from the sugar overload. Chocolate Peanut Butter And the GF's favorite was the chocolate peanut butter, which had creamy nougats of peanut butter studded throughout. Certainly as an original institution and considering the storied history behind this fudge, you'd be remiss if you didn't check it out. They've got enough flavors to satisfy any sweet tooth and give you enough sugary pep in your step to explore the entirety of Mackinac Island.

Alicia M.

Yelp
D E L I C I O U S Seriously though, it's fudge. I'm sure all of the fudge on the island is good. The double chocolate caramel was amazing.
google avatar

Sara S.

Yelp
Best fudge on the island, although probably not the cheapest. Get the dark chocolate or chocolate and peanut butter fudge! This fudge/chocolatier shop is a little expensive, but it's so good. Much too good to pass up. True, there are definitely cheaper (and also good quality) fudge/candy shops on the island, but Murdick's Fudge is a Mackinac tradition. Beware: You can smell the distinct odor of horse poop in near proximity, so be advised!

Sam L.

Yelp
If you are planning a trip to the Island you NEED to get this fudge! We watched the owner create fudge right in front of us and it was a magical process to watch. After the fudge was made we were able to eat fresh fudge right off the slab, and let me tell you it was sooooooooooooo good. The workers were extremely helpful in helping us choose our flavors and provided excellent customer service. They created a unique experience that I will never forget! Best fudge on the island no doubt!
google avatar

T S.

Yelp
The fudge here is amazing!! You can also watch how they make it, which the little kids and adults love. Hard to leave this shop without buying every flavor available. Definitely a stop worth making.

K X.

Yelp
Over-rated, over-priced, obnoxious staff...just a few doors down better tasting, friendlier staff, better value.

Robin F.

Yelp
the fudge at ryba's is excellent! I ordered 3 boxes for friends!
google avatar

Jessie L.

Yelp
Get the double chocolate, coconut, sea salt fudge!!!! We went today at the end of the season so the fudge wasn't as hot and warm but still DELICIOUS!!! Go get some!
google avatar

Catherine Durkin R.

Yelp
Best fudge on the island. We especially liked the salty caramel and chocolate peanut butter. YUMMO. Just a suggestion, smaller portions would be nice...and some water. Hands down, much better than the non-edible smelly "fudge" the horses leave all over the place. Breathe through your mouths, enjoy these treats, and concentrate on the flowers. It's a beautiful, quaint, and charming island.

Vindha P.

Yelp
The fudge is great! No complaints on that! Dont get me wrong I gave it 3 stars for the customer service...I've never had fudge before and wanted to sample a couple of them before buying. They have a deal if you buy 4 slices get the 5th free. One of the ladies who work behind the counter made a rude comment about asking for too many samples when I asked for my 2nd sample! 2nd sample! I dont think its unreasonable to sample the slices you want to buy for family and friends, especially when you have never had any before. Dont have the 4 slice promotion if you aren't willing to allow some samples per customer. Or post a sign clearly stating the # of samples allowed per customer. We ended up buying 2 flavors blindly hoping they are good. It was a very disappointing end to our stay there. There are plenty of other fudge places to try here that are also highly rated. Try those.
google avatar

Patty F.

Yelp
Aaron Mirdicks that is in Mackinaw City is still owned by the Mirdicks family. The fudge is very good. I sampled the fudge from other places in mackinaw city and on Mackinac Island and Aaron Mirdicks is the best tasting.
google avatar

Mel G.

Yelp
This is one of the oldest fudge shops on Mackinac Island. They all have different claims to fame, but I am 90% sure I heard this was the first. The staff is friendly and helpful. They let you try various samples to see what you would like best. We went with the Turtle and then Mint. Both were amazing. I haven't had fudge in years and this brought back memories. So soft and not too sweet. Very refreshing and not heavy. Must stop here when in Mackinac Island! *updated some of the business info as I found the website and also was there 2 weeks ago!
google avatar

Jackie K.

Yelp
It's yummy but I had a sample of their cherry and it tasted like medicine. Their turtle one was good but expensive (which I understand as it's a touristy place - I don't blame them). All in all I'm glad I stopped.
google avatar

Andrea R.

Yelp
There's a Murdick's on Central Ave. however we went to the shop in Mackinaw Crossings. All of the fudge in the area is completely overpriced, so when you're looking to buy, don't think about the cost. Think about flavor and service. We got five different flavors of fudge - five slices for $23.80. The thing I really like about Murdick's (that we didn't get at other fudge shops) was that the girl serving us gave us a lot of information about the fudge. She told us how long it would keep outside the fridge, inside the fridge, and inside the freezer. She told us at what temperature it would melt. She told us not to use the same knife for the chocolate mint on the other fudge because that mint flavor is extra strong and will contaminate the other fudge. The chocolate mint was exceptionally good. We tried Black Cherry, but I didn't like it. It was quite flavorful with vanilla and chunks of cherry, but I was hoping for a cherry flavor to go along with the chunks of cherry. (I forgot to ask for a sample taste.)
google avatar

Mary R.

Yelp
My college-age daughter and I just returned from five glorious days on Mackinac Island. We did a taste test of some of the different fudge shops and by far, Murdick's Fudge was the best. We shared the plain chocolate, the peanut butter chocolate, the chocolate pecan, the chocolate espresso and the maple nut. All were fantastic. The fudge at the other two shops we tried were so bad we threw them out! (Ryba's and Sanders.) The night before we left, we went back to Murdick's to get a couple of more pieces to take home. Try this place - they are great about letting you try the fudge, too.
