The Best Restaurants and Bars Around Oakland’s Jack London Square | Eater SF

"After opening in 2018, this brewery quickly established itself as one to watch in the East Bay. The emphasis is on Belgian and German styles, including saisons, sours, lagers, dubbels, and kolsch beers. But with its historic brick home, string lights, and comfy seating, it’s also a lovely place to just hang out and check out the food pop-ups taking up residency at the brewery." - Dianne de Guzman

The warehouse-y space and sunny front patio are currently closed, but the brewery’s beers — with an emphasis on Belgian and German styles, including saisons, sours, lagers, dubbels, and kolsch beers — are available for pickup and home delivery seven days a week. Really nice space- lots of seating- indoors, outdoors, upstairs, downstairs, near windows or dark. It’s really got it all! Good beer selection. And the attached pizza is good but expensive. Overall would recommend!

Google
Super cool beer and cool location in Jack London square area. 2 stories and very nice people! Cheers :)

Google
Some of the best beer I have had visiting the Bay Area. The bartender was super into dad jokes so show up prepared.

Fabrice Cauwenbergh

Google
Very nice and friendly place. Thank you for the great and special beers, and thank you for the good service (the glass we buy for Germany are not broken :-) :-) :-)

Tom Stephens

Google
Cool place. Nice vibes here. IPA’s are very good. I’m giving this place only four stars because most of the beers come in either 14 or 12 ounces yet you pay eight or nine dollars a beer. Not worth the price.

Katie Smith

Google
Great beer, great food, great vibe, but not safe. But tonight my car and the car in front of it were broken into directly across the street from the brewery before 9 pm. A few months ago a friend’s entire van was stolen here. If you have to drive to get here consider carefully whether it is worth the risk.

Deborah Kuchar

Google
Oh, when I walked in and saw those tanks I knew I was in the right place. Fresh craft beer, great selection, super cool staff. The seating is varied, inside has some long tables for groups, booths for more intimacy, a loft and outdoor seating along the front and side. There’s a pop up pizza maker everyday and the pizza is delicious. Thin, tasty crust and fresh ingredients.

Google
Great layout and impressive selection of their own brews! We had a relaxing time upstairs with our flight of beers but unfortunately, we only really connected with their Sour beer. Beer is truly a personal preference so don’t take our word for it, get over there and try them out! They also have a pizza kitchen out front that made some delicious pizza!

Yelp
The craft beer scene in and around Oakland has improved in the 18 years I have worked downtown. While there weren't many options within walking distance, opting to drive or BART to the city for good craft. Over the years the scene has improved and Original Pattern is one of those craft breweries that's within walking distance from my employer. OP is located in a brick building on the corner of 4th and Harrison, next to the Posey Tube vent structure. The brewery is open, with multi-floor seating, as well as outside seating around the building. The bar backs up to the brewing floor, where large stainless steel fermenters are visible. The current tap rotation is posted on the wall, as you wait in line, as well as on small clipboards around the bar. OP sells cans and merchandise up front as you walk in. I'll be honest, I was not initially a fan of OP, but it's become one of my go to breweries in the area. The staff are helpful and insightful, as well as friendly, this too goes for those who frequent the establishment. I've sampled over 50 of their beers, sticking mainly to clear beer, lagers, pilsners, IPAs and sours. Been very satisfied with the different styles on taps, the hops used and the diverse flavors brewed. The only negative thing I have to say is having to pay tax on top of an $8 beer or any beer served at OP. Obviously, its not enough to stop me from frequenting the establishment. The other great part of OP, is Citizen Pizza is on site, serving up fresh pies and food. Make for an enjoyable afternoon/evening after work. You can see my review for CP on Yelp as well. Overall, I can't give them anything less than five stars. The location, the beer, the staff, the pizza. Keep up the good work!

Yelp
Located in the heart of Oakland, Original Pattern Brewing Company is a hidden gem for beer enthusiasts. As soon as you walk in, you are greeted by the inviting aroma of freshly brewed beer and the sound of live music on Friday evening. The ambiance is laid-back and casual, perfect for enjoying a cold pint with friends after a long day. The prices are more than reasonable, making it a great spot for a casual night out without breaking the bank. One of the highlights of Original Pattern Brewing Company is their great selection of beers. I highly recommend trying their flight of beers, each one offering a unique and interesting taste profile. What makes it even more fun is that you get to order and pick your own flight, adding a personal touch to your experience. The service quality at Original Pattern Brewing Company is top-notch. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and always willing to offer recommendations based on your preferences.

Yelp
Original Pattern Brewing is a fantastic brewery located near Jack London. The inside of the brewery is spacious with 2 levels of seating, providing plenty of room for guests. However, the upstairs area was quite hot and humid when I came, even with the windows open, as there was steam coming out of one of the fermentation tanks. There was plenty of seating available when my group visited on a Friday evening around 7 pm. They have live music happening every Friday evening, so you can check their website to see who will be performing. There was a live jazz band on the day we came. If you're hungry, you can order pizza from Citizens pizza outside to enjoy with your beer. I had already eaten before coming so I didn't get any food. As someone who isn't a big fan of beer, I decided to split a flight of 6 beers with a friend for $18. The flight came with a cute holder, but you have to walk carefully to avoid spilling, especially when going up the stairs. You write down your orders for the flight and keep the sheet afterwards. It was really nice to have that to reference as we tried the beers, so we knew exactly what we were trying. We got a variety to try. My favorites were The Path to Somewhere (German pilsner) and the Outer Realm (hazy IPA). Overall, Original Pattern Brewing offers a great atmosphere and a wide selection of beers. I would recommend this brewery to anyone looking for a chill night out in the Jack London area.

Yelp
Cool vibes from the loft! I love OP beer but never have made it out to the brewery until now. The beer is crisp as ever. The bartenders are incredibly nice and welcoming. They even have pizza being sold at the front which looked amazing. definitely will be stopping by next time in Oakland.

Yelp
Having sampled their beer at a festival years ago, I was thrilled to finally experience their brewery firsthand. Highlights: Beer Flights: I opted for two flights, each featuring 12 different selections of IPAs, hazies, and stouts. Every single beer was outstanding--flavorful, well-crafted, and a testament to their expertise. Ambiance: The vibes were fantastic. Even on a busy weekend night, the wait was minimal thanks to the attentive staff. Upstairs seating provided a great view. Food Pairing: Citizen Pizza, available on-site, perfectly complemented the beer. Their pizza is top-notch, making it an ideal spot for both celebrations and casual hangouts. I'll definitely be returning for more exceptional beer and delicious pizza. Cheers!

Yelp
I came to Original Pattern as part of a large group and was bigly impressed with the ambiance and general vibe. The folks who run this place were super friendly. Because I needed to drive home, I drank only a single glass of the session beer (which had the lowest alcohol). This choice was 100% fine but did not knock my socks off -- probably because of its session profile. My drinking buddies got IPAs and such and seemed delighted with their choices. This is a great area of Oakland that I hope to return to repeatedly.

Yelp
Original Pattern Brewing was a brewery I had on my "to try" list and I am glad that getting an experience with their beer came together recently. The beer we had was Bean Me Up! which was a porter which it was great to have. It has coffee flavor with dry and bitter qualities to it which makes a nice complexity to it and very infectious to drink. Rich and full this porter is perfect to have by a toasty fire as the rain comes down or as the snow flies outside.

Yelp
Haven't been here in a while but the beer flights are my go to. Why have one beer when you can taste them all! Staff is really friendly very cute inside also have a outdoor section with amazing pop ups. Bring your fur friends they are dog friendly. They had Woodfire pizza when we went and let me tell you the vegan option is amazing and the staff was really nice to help make the sauce for the Shishido peppers, vegan friendly as well !
google avatar

Yelp
Awesome brewery boasting fun beers in a cool space! They had a pretty good variety of brews with 14 beers on tap. They hit most styles from light to dark. No sours when we went in, but they did have a gose. They also had some others available in the can, though they were for to-go consumption only. We came here on a Saturday afternoon shortly after opening and the downstairs was pretty packed. Lucky for us, they also had a spacious upstairs area with plenty of seating. They also had a few spots outside, though the inside seating was more comfortable. There's plenty of free street parking near by, most of it in the 2-4 hour range. Don't come this way often, but would come back here for sure. Would love to see them expand to other areas of the Bay too!
google avatar

Alex L.

Yelp
First time here! First off, the vibes were amazing. I went on a weekend night and there were plenty of people. However, the wait was minimal as there was plenty of staff ready to help! There are many seating options, both upstairs and downstairs. The night I went, there was a live band playing; they were really good! Pricing was expected and they had plenty of beers. Restrooms were clean. I believe there were two! Parking is street and slightly competitive. Would come back again!
google avatar

Alex A.

Yelp
Quality beer. Quality staff. and they even have PIZZA!!! Upon arriving we were not expecting food but their pizza truck was AMAZE! Obviously the beer was 10/10 too. Inside seating, outside, we come here every chance we get. Thank you OP keep it up :)

Yelp
As someone from the South Bay, I don't venture to Oakland often. However if you are looking for some of the best Hazys around you must try this brewery. You are welcome to bring in food and they have a pop up Citizen Pizza Kitchen that opens after 4. It is an intimate tasting room, and a good size crowd on a Friday afternoon. It's close to Jack London Square and the freeway.
google avatar

Ana G.

Yelp
Now this is some great craft beer here in the Bay Area and the ambiance makes it even better! You will find some great beers even if you aren't a beer person! This is one of my husband and I go to brews. The staff is always welcoming and friendly, plus they have some good food options in case hunger strikes
google avatar

Pat C.

Yelp
Kind of strangely quiet considering I went in a Friday night. Interesting choices if beers, I went for a peekaboo, loved its ruby color and enjoyed the taste. I know very little about beer beside how to drink it and enjoy it. Bar staff were very pleasant and efficient. A drink will cost you around $10 Inc taxes and tip. Live entertainment was present but nothing to write home about. Sitting areas are varied and all pleasant.
google avatar

Yelp
Solid beers! They've got lots of IPAs from traditional and hazy, usually a sour or two, a couple pales, and a lager round out the draft menu. They've also got a couple coolers full of Togo beers, which is my favorite. Nothing like stopping by here on your way to an A's game with a 4 pack of OP to tailgate with. They've got pizza too! I haven't tried it yet, but it looked and smelled nice. I'll get some next time. The staff is always super cheerful and ready to give you an opinion on a beer to get. The inside is industrial - it's a brewery - and they've got a nice outdoor seating patio which is awesome on warm days.
google avatar

Brian B.

Yelp
Great beer. Friendly people. Perfect setting. Indoor and outdoor seating, pretty easy parking. The best thing about OP is the range of beers. Andy, the Brewmaster, is from New Zealand and brings some twists you don't see everywhere else. I prefer clear IPAs and my friends like sours and cloudy IPAs and we can all go to OP and find exactly what we're looking for. They usually have a great pizza vendor we really enjoy as well. Just great beer in a cool vibe. Put this place on your list for sure. JLS has a thriving beer scene. Get here!

Yelp
Probably one of my favorite breweries in the Oakland area. I first came for a pop-up they had last summer with a Taiwanese dumpling spot, so the mix of dumplings and a carousel of beer just warmed my heart! Great local eatery food truck pop-up featured every time they're open (and I think they're pretty conscious of having a vegan option as well). I'm a big fan of their samplers and rotating drafts - hazy IPAs and sours tend to be my standouts. There's enough seating downstairs, outside on their patio, or upstairs which feels more loungey and private (I can definitely just chat with family or friends and log onto Wifi on a laptop here to work lol). Dibble Dabble (papaya, cantaloupe, citrus) Hazy IPA, Down the Rabbit Hole (diesel, pine, grapefruit) Hazy IPA and Currant Capitulation Sour (black currant, blackberry, raspberry) were standout during my last visit!
google avatar

Shmike Z.

Yelp
Original Pattern Brewing Company serves up some of the finest craft beer I've ever had. I first tried their IPAs at Paulista's Brazilian taproom(highly recommend), where they have a rotating selection on draft that can compete with brews from anywhere. The tropical, citrusy hop flavors of their West Coast-style IPAs are perfectly balanced and go down smooth. Beyond the beer, they have a pizza pop-up out front that's worth checking out. With quality brews and good food, Original Pattern is a can't-miss stop for any craft beer lover. I highly recommend checking them out - you won't be disappointed!

Yelp
Just enjoyed a "beer-cation" up in Oakland where we stopped into Original Pattern. We were only going to pop in for a round, but ended up staying for a couple hours which included indulging in some pizza from the vendor outside. We really loved the ambiance of this space and the welcoming staff. Bonus that even though their to-go cans were bundled in 4-packs, you're allowed to break them apart and make your own mixed pack! The beer quality was great too! My stand out favorites were the Crosshatch Kolsch and Such is Life Hoppy Saison. We ended up taking some cans and merch too because we enjoyed this brewery so much. We can't wait to revisit whenever we're back in the east bay!
google avatar

Janette W.

Yelp
Great beer, friendly staff and good food vendors! I've also noticed they seem to ensure there is a vegan option, so that's nice. This might be one of my favorite breweries in the East Bay.
google avatar

William W.

Yelp
Fantastic beer, just the best juicy IPAs. I've heard good things about the pizza pop up they currently have. Broad selection, a little but not too loud. Decent outdoor space though not the most elegant. The upstairs is beautiful and a perfect place to sit though. The bar article is well organized

Yelp
Came to original pattern brewing company for a friends birthday. There is awesome food provided by Citizen pizza and a wonderful array of seasonal beers. This is an excellent place to come for celebrations hangouts or even a fun casual date. We tried to beers Yamagata and beam me up and they were wonderful. In addition to the beers. We got the tater tot pizza in which came out very fast about five minutes after ordering. The staff here are very friendly, informative, and welcoming. Sitting on a Saturday was readily available and parking was very easy We highly recommend, and we will definitely be back
google avatar

Helen H.

Yelp
Original Pattern is a solid brewery. Even though I'm not into beer, my bf is and he enjoys their IPAs. I got a sour and enjoyed it as well. There is indoor (two stories) and outdoor seating available. There is pizza if food is needed. If you can't make it to Oakland to check them out, I've seen their beer at local grocery stores in Sacramento (Nugget).
google avatar

Chad G.

Yelp
Really good beer. Pretty easy parking.Nice ambience. Not a fan of the not particularly friendly staff.

Yelp
[REVIEW WRITTEN: 11/13/22] This is a solid stop for me brewery-wise in Oakland. The staff is friendly and attentive - try'n to find exactly what tickles your palate. The Deets: + Always rotating beers on draft. + To-Gos available, singles are available too +/- Street parking is available; there's plenty available whenever stepping into the taproom + Seating is available (both booths and communal style) - there is availability upstairs too + Merch is always rotating, be on the lookout to rep your fave brewery + There are pop-ups during the weekend, but plenty in walking distance. + Wi-Fi available Beer fan? Come here and enjoy!

Yelp
On a recent visit to the Bay Area, I had the pleasure of meeting a long-time online friend in person for the first time. This is his favorite brewery so it was our first stop and was grateful to have come here. I said up front this was a place I would try every beer on tap that day, and I did (flight size of course). It's in an old brick building with high ceilings, a cool loft above the door, outdoor seating, and pizza ovens. He introduced me to the bartender Kat, who was fantastic throughout our entire visit. One point that steals the eye is the rainbow collage of old can releases along the one wall. We opted to sit outside in his favorite spot and chatted about beer. All of them were delicious, unique and well made. I especially loved the wooden circular flight holders. His family eventually joined us as well, always nice to have family friendly breweries. Prices are great for the quality. I look forward to visiting again in the future and trying whatever is new. Thanks for the fun visit!

Yelp
Love this brewery before an A's game! These were great: Pilsner -capo di birra -Country doctor IPA -Hop Dose Nonalcoholic -peach kombucha Sidenote: Just a 10 minute walk from the Bart station
google avatar

Derek M.

Yelp
Good beer brewed by good people! I always feel welcomed here. They produce a range of beers, from a rice lager to an English barley wine and everything in between. Yet another establishment that makes me proud to live Oakland.
google avatar

Tracy D.

Yelp
Came looking for more food and drink. I'm not a beer drinker so had the sour beer which was delicious. Husband tried the taster. The place is a good size with lots of seating upstairs and Dow stairs. A musician was playing which made more a fun ambiance. Citizen Pizza which is on site is delicious and a perfect pairing with the beers. Service was helpful and friendly in helping me pick out my beer.
google avatar

Yelp
We stopped in for beers on a recent Sunday while visiting Oakland...it was so great! Here is what we liked: - Not a ton of seating inside, but we scored one of the primo booths! - The flight was $16 and held 6 5-oz tasters. - Great selection of beers, including several Hazy's. - Loved the beers! Bottom line: I'd go back anytime...but, I don't live near Oakland. I'd better check and see if they're available at BevMo...
google avatar

Jeris A.

Yelp
Another gem of a brewery in Oakland. Crazy good vibes with live jazz music on Friday nights and the hazy IPAs are some of the very best. They have a pop up pizza maker everyday and they serve really go
google avatar

Sheral F.

Yelp
Stopped by here after work to celebrate a friend's milestone. There is ample seating and despite being a large space, feels very cozy. I ordered a pizza while waiting for people to show; it was a delicious crispy crust and fresh toppings. The beer is fantastic, and the staff is wonderful!
google avatar

David R.

Yelp
Exactly what you want out of a brewery I liked the upstairs area Good beer and food available. Will definitely be back
google avatar

Yelp
Brewery located in the produce mart section near Jack London Square. Lots of brews to choose from with different taste profiles and alcohol content. Large warehouse with two levels to drink and dine (Citizen Pizza - Popup is in front on the sidewalk).
google avatar

Jason L.

Yelp
Diverse selection of beers in a cool fun environment engaged staff is fun and welcoming.

Yelp
IPA lovers, this place gets you and is ready to make you happy. We normally don't do tastings but we decided to try a variety of their IPA's ($15). The beer tender was really friendly and helpful. We loved all 6 of our tastings (Dibble Dabble, Pure Imagination, Undeniable Speculation, Esky Crusher, Over Yonder, and El do to Nelson). The tasting was a really nice variety of different IPA styles (IPA, Hazy, DIPA). A couple of them were made with New Zealand hops (Over Yonder and El do to Nelson) and they had a noticeable creamy texture that we really enjoyed. For eats, Good to Eat Dumplings was onsite. I was hoping to try their dumplings, but unfortunately for me they only offered the pork dumplings (I'm not a big pork fan). Instead, I went for the spicy noodles, which were really tasty and had just the right amount of heat to get a little sweat going. My husband got the Ribeye Bao Sandwich. He really liked it. It comes with the same type of bun that you get when you order Peking Duck. We also really enjoyed their homemade chips ($5) - a must try! They are prepackaged on some shelves to the right when you first enter the brewery. Fresh made taste, very thin with a super crunchy texture, some subtle, interesting spices and slightly vinegary. A bit of umami going on. PERFECT beer snack. We purchased a 4-pack of the El do to Nelson ($17.99) and made our merry way home. Can't wait for our next visit.

Yelp
It's hard to choose a favorite brewery since the Bay Area and broader Northern California is home to so many but Original Pattern is mine. The beers are fun and bright, just like their open and airy space, and the servers are friendly. I love their pop-up food options as well. If you're visiting from SF, take the ferry and then Uber over to Ghost Town, another great spot
google avatar

Alex E.

Yelp
Amazing clean space with great beer and great service! Original Pattern is cranking out some delicious brews and they've got a beautiful place to showcase it. Grab a bite from Good to Eat Dumplings, their weekly food resident or check out the rotating pop up calendar for early in the week bites. The fermentation vessels are located right behind the bar, so you can watch the magic happen while enjoying a brew or two. The beers are great and the setting is comfortable, plus this is an easy walk from the Jack London Ferry terminal for an easy & safe commute back to the city. Cheers!
google avatar

Mike S.

Yelp
Probably some of the best beer you'll get in the Bay Area. Wide selection of beer. There will definitely be something on the menu that will be your new favorite. Cool ambiance also. Nothing fancy just a nice place to hang out.
google avatar

Monique D.

Yelp
Fun cozy spot with awesome brew! Great selection of their locally made beer- tons to sample and choose from. Delicious Popup pizza too (not sure how often/when they are there). Definitely going back!!
google avatar

Megha V.

Yelp
Great beers and love the ambiance to hole up and enjoy some good drinks and convo. Citizens pizza is delicious as well and I like that they fill growlers here.
google avatar

Giovanna R.

Yelp
Great beer that's made here, changing per season. Also, "Good to Eat Dumplings " -- are a must here! Definitely the Pan fried dumplings, garlic noodles, and the won ton chips! Everything else is great too, just not my faves. The donuts are different but tasty! Great to be outside, during the day, on a sunny day -- pups are welcome! Cheers!

Yelp
We went to listen to a friend's band, Polkageist West, who were playing one Saturday afternoon. The pub was active and there was a festive feel about it. It was quick work for ordering a pint and a small glass of their Oktoberfest brew. We headed outside toward the band and easily grabbed a seat. The band was awesome (of course they would be, my friend plays the drums!) and they were a lot of fun engaging people to participate in sing-a-longs. They have a wide repertoire of music ranging from traditional songs to contemporary with a polka beat behind it. Love it! Excellent beer and music, loved the pretzel, should have ordered two! Went back to get another and the line was too long to wait at that point. Just means there's a reason to come back.

Yelp
Made a wrong turn and so happy we did. We passed this place earlier in the day because we missed our exit. We decided to go back on our way home. Citizen Pizza was there making cook to order pizzas. The popcorn with magic seasoning was addictive. We had the beer sampler and ever beer we tried was good. There is outdoor seating but we opted for indoors because of the nice ambiance inside. This is now my favorite brewery in Oakland. Street parking but there were close spaces open. Dog friendly. They even has treats for our fur baby. 5 stars!
google avatar

Morgan Z.

Yelp
Original Pattern is a great place to stop in at for beers and dumplings! We love coming here to get a craft brew and some noms from Good To Eat Dumplings. When we stopped by the other weekend, there was live music inside where people could enjoy from the first floor or second floor. For a more quiet setting we sat outside where there is seating in both the front and on the side of the building. We ordered a couple hazy ipas and some dumplings as a snack. Everything was delicious! I'd definitely recommend stopping by for food and drinks!
google avatar

Angela G.

Yelp
Date night for hubby and I. The Jazz music was good. The food from the dumpling pop up was pretty good. You place your order at the door and are given a buzzer that goes off when your order is ready. Hubby and I sat upstairs in their spacious loft, off in a corner affording us some much needed privacy. The beer flight was tasty, and I don't even like beer. I really enjoyed the grapefruit flavored one as well as the one that had a coffee taste. We will definitely come again soon.
google avatar

May Z.

Yelp
I stopped here last night for a beer. Their outside patio is cute and nicely spaced. I liked the bar stool and wine barrel vibes. Our server was prompt and helpful. The beers were all delicious. I almost wanted to buy some to take home... next time! I had just eaten but I saw they had some noodles that looked bomb and the dumplings also intrigued me. Will def be back to try the food. Our server was super sweet and came up to tell us the kitchen was closing. Overall earned the 5th star for that considering she really didn't have to do that. Very thoughtful. I got a hazy ipa which was perfect. My friends got a sour and a lager, also fire! I loved how each beer came in a different glass. Very classy looking.

Yelp
Great beer and super friendly people. I'd give the place 5 stars if they had more food choices.

Yelp
Incredible beer. Rice lager one of my favorites. Great sours as well. One of the best breweries I've been to.
