The first sign of trouble was when we walked into the place and the entire staff looked surprised we actually came inside....
I remember back in the day when pretty much any barbecue joint couldn't disappoint. Well, those days are gone, and it pretty much starts at Uncle Tom's. I very rarely write low star reviews unless it is absolutely necessary to warn the public when something is amiss.
Let's start with what they did do right....
The waitress was friendly, patient, and accommodating to our requests and made some sensible suggestions. She was quick and efficient in delivering our drinks and food to the table. In other words, she did her job very well. The manager comped our food when we expressed our dissatisfaction with our experience (see below). He did his job well.
This is where the engine goes off the rails...
We ordered burnt ends. Which at any other barbecue place they would be the actual meat cut from the "point" half of a smoked brisket. A "proper" burnt end should display a modest amount of "bark" or char on at least one side. Oh no, not these "burnt ends". These were more like dried out pieces of meat submerged in sauce. We ended up sending these back and replacing them with a generic "sampler platter" of wings, onion rings, and corn nuggets. Which were not bad and we would have enjoyed, if not for the memory of the aforementioned sauced jerky.
Not willing to risk any further disappointment, we ordered a rack of ribs. Because, you know, "When in Rome..."
This is where the engine goes over the ravine, and into the chasm...
The ribs appeared cooked. They had a nice char, looked well seasoned, and the side of sauce had great flavor. That is, until you bite into them. Tough leather would have been softer. Then, the raw and uncooked center of the ribs gave way to visions of trichinosis. If you listened closely, you could hear the pig still squealing....
As we were driving away in haste, our first stop was for some Pepto and club soda..... Our appetites gone, like the reputation Tom Fantis worked so hard to create all those years....
