Great beer and great vibes!
The long awaited predecessor to a very lame Greene Turtle, this is the kind of local flavor downtown Fairfaxians (trying it out) have been craving. This brew pub was originally located near IKEA in Prince William county, so they've been crafting beers and getting them just right for a while now.
We came in with our baby, which was totally welcome. There's plenty of space, including enormous booths that are big enough to fit a baby travel seat. My husband and I wanted to try a lot of different things, so we split a flight of 6 beers for $12. They have some local guest beers, but we wanted to try their own (they had 8).
My favorites were the Down Wit It, Occoquan Oats, and the Dark Seduction. The brewer, Ferdinand, came over and chatted with us about his story. He went over to England and learned to brew over there. He came back and opened Ornery with a British theme, and it's been a huge hit ever since! He also gave us a taste of the Ornery Like a Fox Beer, which was a collaboration with Mad Fox Tavern in Falls Church. It was great!
We also chatted with Max, who I believe was one of the managers. He was friendly and funny. So was our server. Everyone was so easy to talk to; it's easy to imagine that this is a place that will have regulars.
Parking was a piece of cake, even with a baby! It's attached to a four level parking garage with an elevator.
We didn't try the food because we'd already eaten, but I was intrigued. They have a diverse menu, and I'll definitely have to get bread pudding for dessert some time.
