San Diego’s Best French Fry-Packed California Burritos

"The California burrito is the top seller at this family-owned strip mall shop where regulars know to add guacamole to a mix that’s loaded with plenty of carne asada, tons of crispy french fries, and ample melted cheese. If there’s any room after the burrito, diners can add things like crunchy rolled tacos, tostadas, and soups like caldo de res or menudo. The simply adorned interior has a few booths flanking its far wall to complement the bustling to-go business." - Mario A. Cortez, Candice Woo, Eater Staff

If you’re a fan of California Burritos and authentic SD Mexican food, you have to stop by here. The best Cali burrito I’ve had in years!!! Get it with beans and rice inside.

Russell Hirschorn

Google
Al Pastor was very tasty, carne asada was nothing special, there are many other places with better fish tacos, Al Pastor all the way. Great call on the reviewer who said to go with mini tacos, that was a great move.

Google
Simple, phenomenal food. You think you’ve had a great burrito? An A1 taco.? Sorry, unless you’ve been to Ortiz’s you’ve only had second best. Service is prompt, prices more than reasonable, and the staff is super helpful. Simple ambience, simple choices, and it’s all perfect!

Google
I was a regular at Ortiz's when I lived in the neighborhood (2014-2016). I had an opportunity to swing by again when I was in town for a visit. I'm pleased to say the quality remains as terrific as ever. Delicious food, efficient and friendly service, and affordable prices. My favorites are the California burrito and the carne asada fries. Be sure to try their horchata and excellent green and red salsas, as well.

Google
Must visit.. It’s California Burrito that has fries in it was voted #8 in America. Delicious is an understatement. All ingredients made fresh. The burrito wrap is delicious and cooked perfectly, huge size, you can only eat one per seating or per day 😅 super filling. I would eat here every day if I could. Best Taco place in San Diego.

Google
Got Al pastor burrito and was really tasty. Al pastor meat was flavorful, also it had good cilantro and salsa. Friendly service and nice seating. Authentic local Mexican food. Was busy but line moved fast. Looked like a great menu with good variety. Will definitely be going back. Close spot to OB beaches , golf spot yo stop after surfing or beach day. Looked like some other good food in same little shopping center.

Google
Stumbled upon this tiny gem when another place didn't have what we we wanted. Tried the combo plate with 2 fish tacos, and we were not disappointed! Delicious and the portions are good for a low price. There's not much seating, but the food is excellent, and it's nice to support a small, family owned business.

Ambrosia Solis

Google
Food was delicious. Not a lot of places to sit and it's not the cleanest place. But the food was extremely good, the service wasn't slow, and the price was decent. The grilled chicken and the carnivats tacos are very good. The Cali burrito was good. Would recommend.

Yelp
I LOVE the place! I know where every Mexican food place is in San Diego and don't mind driving to get good grub. This place is right in PL/OB. They always have a warm sincere greeting ready when you enter and offer the best Mexican food you can get. Vegan options too. I feel like I'm at home eating here. Clean dog free environment. I wish I could say more. Good food. Good prices. Great people!

Yelp
INSANE CALI BURRITO. So freaking flavorful and delicious. The tortilla is so soft and perfect, the guac, the sour cream, the meat. Ugh to die for. Best Cali burrito I think I've ever had. The tacos are good but not great, the burrito though.... So insanely delicious. I'm definitely coming back. The service was also super fast and really nice!! 10/10 !!

Yelp
I got to try Ortiz's recently, at the recommendation of a friend. I know they are known for their California burrito but wasn't feeling it, so I got the fish burrito instead. For under $10 a pop, these fish burritos are quite tasty! The restaurant is quite small with limited seating. You order at the front and they call out your order. The food was ready very quickly, and it was hot and fresh. Other members of my party ordered the Cali burrito, and they loved it. My fish burrito was delicious as well. It was quite simple, tartar sauce, fried fish, cabbage, and salsa fresca. The fish was hot and crispy, with a tender interior that wasn't rubbery at all. There wasn't a massive amount of fish but I could get a good amount in almost every bite. The cabbage and diced tomato were crisp and fresh, and perfectly complement the fried fish alongside the tartar sauce. The tortilla was perfectly warmed and had a bit of crisp, a bit of chew. There was a bit more tortilla than I would have liked, but it was nice to eat even by itself. Overall this was a solid burrito, but lacks that extra bit to make it a 5 star place for me. I have only had the fish burrito, but I want to come back next time I crave a California burrito to try Ortiz's!

Yelp
Awesome hole in the wall burrito spot! I come here to grab a burrito on my way to and from Cabrillo national monument. The burritos come out fast and is super flavorful. I usually get the fish burrito ~$9. The burritos are big and flavorful. The salsas (red, green) are also flavorful. Lots of regulars come around here. Credit card ok, I believe there's no fee to use credit cards. There is parking in the lot, sometimes hard to find but usually there is a free spot!

Yelp
I really like this taco spot! I have been in San Diego over four years now and 'd say this is one of my favorite spots. It does get busy but its well worth the wait. The guys behind the counter here are really nice and very efficient with running this taco shop. lt's well maintained,. It is a small place but great hole in the wall.
google avatar

Mico S.

Yelp
Ordered the California burrito and can attest to its spot as the most popular item. It's very good and well worth it at its price point. The workers here are very nice and the ambience is very casual. They went a bit light with the guac, which doesn't bother me personally but I think it's worth noting

Yelp
If you're looking for the best California Burrito in all of San Diego, look no further than Ortiz's Taco Shop. Five years ago I stopped in because I was hungry and saw that this place beared my last name. Now, I can't help but to stop in for my CB fix. No frills taco shop. Order to-go or grab a booth. Just be sure to try Ortiz's California Burrito and wash it down with Agua de Jamaica. You won't be sorry.

Yelp
Ate here at the recommendation of my AirBnB host. I judge most Mexican places on their Carne Asada. Mine was good and the portions were huge. The Carne itself was a little underwhelming (lacked a good marinade). But, the meal as a whole was pretty good This is your typical Roberto's style place with all the typical menu options Good choice for takeout
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent food! Convenient location. Service was decent. One star deduction because I asked for burrito to be cut in half and it was written on the order. Got back to hotel and it wasn't cut and I didn't have a knife being at a hotel. I was the only customer at the time, so it means there wasn't attention to detail for no reason. However, I was highly impressed with the food and salsas

Yelp
My favorite taqueria in Point Loma! The fish tacos, the al pastor, and the carnitas are terrific. The chilaquiles is good and the Cali burrito is pretty great too.

Yelp
This place was a hidden surprise. We walked here from the Baked Thicc parking lot and immediately knew it was good. It was packed with people and the smells from the kitchen slapped you in the face... but in a good way. I ordered 4 tacos and honestly inhaled them. The pollo asada was super flavorful. They exnayed the onions for me with no hesitation or upcharge - thank you for that! I'm looking forward to coming here again on my lunch break. Their quesadillas sound amazing.
google avatar

Deb S.

Yelp
Service was friendly, food was fresh and cooked to order, the Cali Burrito was delicious, as was the Carne Asada taco. The Carnitas taco was very dry, however, so I would skip that one next time.

Yelp
Best Cali burrito in town, not even close. fresh food, good service. highly recommend.

Yelp
This place was soooooo yummy. Stopped in with a big group. I personally got a Chille Relleno Burrito which was so fresh, hot, included beans, rice, and pico. I also added guac. Some of the others in our group raved about the tacos (they did shrimp as well as chicken). Some even went back to order more as they were so good. Another person in our group got an asada burrito and stated it was one of the best she's ever had. I was also super impressed with the flavour of the salsas. Prices are SUPER reasonable. Service was fast, friendly, and accommodating. Plenty of indoor tables to sit at and parking in a lot available as it is located in a strip mall. Absolutely recommending stopping here either to eat in or take to go on your way to Sunset Cliffs

Yelp
Got the Sabroso Burrito (similar to the surf and turf) and the combo #5 (Two Shredded beef tacos with crunchy shells with beans and rice) along with the red and green sauce (One the of best sauces I've ever had, not watery) was soo delicious will be regulars here for sure! service with a smile and food was made promptly 10/10 recommend -If the parking lot is full (which it usually is) Park at the Plaza next door and haul a$$ lol -If you really want to save time call in your order at least at least 15 mins prior for fast pay and pickup

Yelp
I heard about this place from Reddit about a thread for PL Bagels. They said this taco shop has the best California burrito, so I had to test it for myself. I went when I was in the area and ordered one. The person who took my order was very friendly. It ambiance was quiet since my wife and I were the only ones there. The burrito came out very quickly, and we were in a hurry to leave. We tried it and it was AMAZING. The carne asada was seasoned perfectly and it had guacamole, too. Too bad they forgot to give us hot sauce. But I would definitely go back.

Yelp
Nothing too crazy.. place has a lot of hype from the college kids. I pulled up on a Saturday night and there was literally 20 college kids sitting on the sidewalk in front of the shop eating burritos. I thought to myself that this place must be really good. But It was basic Mexican food. Being that most taco shops cook the same things I usually judge the place on how good their hot sauce/salsa is.. Unfortunately the hot sauce here is not that good. Service was cool. The cashier was nice when we ordered but by the time the food was done and after about 10 more people ordering.. he seemed to get a lil frustrated. I wanted to buy a couple cans of sodas (after already placing an order) and he had a really nasty attitude saying he couldn't accept a card payment for sodas.. like wtf? Not cool being I just spent 30$ on food using my card. But whatever. I just wanted to leave because this little small taco shop was getting filled with people and they were super loud and obnoxious. The parking sucks here as well. You have to drive into a small neighborhood and look for parking on tight up hill streets that are basically peoples driveways if you cant score one of the 4parking spots this place has. Not sure if Ill ever return here.

Yelp
Wonderful, just so wonderful. Had a large party of 8 and everyone was thrilled with their orders which ranged across the whole menu. The fish tacos were a personal highlight, as was the quesadillas and of course Cali burrito (both huge). No lard in the tortillas or in the beans (corn oil) is much appreciated. This place really could fit the bill for neighborhood taco shop but then goes above and beyond and elevates the quality. And the prices are super reasonable. Do not sleep on Ortiz this place is wonderful.

Yelp
Huge portions of everything!! My family and I ordered a burrito, a few tacos, and a large carne asada fries to share. The carne asada fries were so crispy and well done! Lots of toppings and sauce on the fries as well. Everything else was ok, not spectacular but this spot is an easy pit stop if you're hungry and want to eat real quick. The workers are friendly and the service is fairly quick. Limited seating and the parking lot is pretty small.

Yelp
I had seen this place reviewed on YouTube for one of "best breakfast burrito-San Diego". I thought I would try it out after dropping off friend at airport. Its a small shop with a few tables indoor and in a small strip mall with a Donut, Thai, Bagel, and Pet food store. I would think on a weekend morning, parking might be a challenge but during week, no issue. I ordered a ham breakfast burrito thinking it would have potato in it, it did not. The breakfast burrito with potatoes in is called the Surf burrito. It is not on the menu, but is on a poster board underneath the menu. It also doesn't have any surf in it, just farm. Back to the burrito I had-it was fresh and packed generously with ham, egg and cheese. I added green salsa to it. It tasted good. The service was friendly and counters and tables clean.

Yelp
So this has been a stop for breakfast for years! Recently been trying their other items and still amazing!! The Diablo Shrimp Burrito is so freaking hot and worth the purchase! I had to stop and tackle again after my mouth cooled! The carne asada burrito is so filling! I cannot finish it but oh I try!! So make this a stop next time you are in OB!

Yelp
We discovered Ortiz's Taco Shop through a YouTube video reviewing breakfast burritos around San Diego (Gareth Eats). They make one kind of breakfast burrito--The Surf. Two Surfs, please. Truth be told, we could have split one breakfast burrito between us, but we knew we'd be hankering for leftovers later. Big burrito (the way Lolita's breakfast burrito used to be before COVID, sigh). They have two kinds of salsas: green which is medium and red which is hot. At least to this gringa. The staff is friendly and the burritos were very tasty. We got two meals out of each. As I recall. Maybe my man ate all of his. What a piggy. Lol! Lots of egg, cheese, potato, and crispy bacon. All of a sudden I want one. Weird. :-) The parking lot is challenging, but my man (begrudgingly) parked my beast for me. Worth the effort. Garth Eats was right to put Ortiz's Taco Shop on their list of breakfast burrito hotspots in San Diego. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Ortiz is an all around tasty humble taco shop. Their food is consistently fresh and proportionally balanced. Our go to's: Machaca burrito Veggie burrito Grilled chicken burrito Salsa is flavorsome, not to salty and just the right spice. We love the green sauce. I'm sure anything you get there will hit the spot. Closed Sundays.
google avatar

Vlad K.

Yelp
Stopped by for some lunch, got the fish burrito and added rice and beans. Was legitimately the best burrito I've had in a really long time. For the price, it was huge and delicious. Got a horchata to go because that's delicious too. Ate it too fast to take a picture sorry. Ask for the mild and spicy sauce and mix them!!
google avatar

James C.

Yelp
The Cali burrito is the best thing there. It's worth trying if you're a Cali burrito fan. The tacos aren't anything special and could use some work. Overall it's 3 to 4 star taco shop.
google avatar

Alex G.

Yelp
Ortiz is always a classic stop. Their breakfast burritos led to a fun fantasy draft and day at the beach for us!!
google avatar

Yelp
Left SeaWorld wanted to find some good local food, headed down to Ortiz taco shop. Very small shopping center with not a lot of parking. The service was OK. You order at the counter and pick it up, not much in the way of service. Well, there was a steady stream of customers coming in and out, if you plan on eating in be aware that the place is small, and the tables are very old. The food was OK, we ordered a shrimp burrito and some fish tacos. Nothing special here just decent food.
google avatar

Bridget D.

Yelp
Service was okay as in someone was at the register to help me . Tried the chicken taco on first visit it was average . Second visit asada burrito , nothing special , rate it as average also . They give you watery salsa. No salsa bar which is another unimpressive factor . Many taco shops in SD offer great salsa bars . I say according to my tastes and comparisons to the plethora of taco shop options it's definitely no where near the best in SD . Nothing special about quality or flavors of food .Passable & palatable is where i'll leave it .

Francis G.

Yelp
I used to love this place as a PLNU alumni. However, I don't know if I'll be returning. As others have said, the cashier is rude, inconsiderate, and needs a refresher on customer service. He has attitude every time he takes your order and never wants to give salsa. I spent 40$ on food and asked for six salsas (which are tiny cups). His response: I'll give you three. He has been the same guy since college but he'll be the demise of this otherwise good joint.
google avatar

Lindsey D.

Yelp
If you're looking for authentic street tacos this is the spot! Service was fast, and they were super friendly. I got the carnitas and asada mini tacos. Cute little hole in the wall! Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for authentic Mexican
google avatar

Yelp
Overall I thought my tacos were pretty average. Nothing really bad but nothing special, really good or wow. My husband liked his Cali burrito.

Yelp
Went to dine in today with my family, Found this location by luck. We were gettin' hungry and chose to go with Taco Shop. Ambiance wise, It wasn't busy around the time we decided to go in, so it was chill and relaxed. The shop was clean and with enough space for a group of 3 adults and 3 kids. The service was good, the employees were on it with the food. Our food came out maybe 10-15 min after we ordered...piping hot...Just like we like it. We ordered mini tacos (asada and cabeza), California burrito, torta de adobada, rolled tacos and fish tacos. Everything was devoured, minus a couple mini tacos my son couldn't finish. But yes, the food was great! We definitely will be back again, given the opportunity.

Yelp
Great stop here while I was in Point Loma--I'd been told I HAD to try a California burrito, and the first place I was directed was Ortiz's. We weren't disappointed. Great food, kind service, I'd come back!
google avatar

Angelica G.

Yelp
Ortiz makes the best veggie burrito in San Diego. I've lived here all my life, so I do feel qualified to say this. There are plenty other very good veggie burritos out there, but this one is perfect. Flavorful, perfect proportions of ingredients, never served cold because of too much lettuce or guac, just completely excellent. And when fries are added? Perfection. Everything else I've ever tried from Ortiz' has been great, including the Chile relleno burrito, the shrimp burrito, and the rolled tacos. You really can't go wrong. And the people who work here are always so friendly! Great experience, every time.
google avatar

Jorgen A.

Yelp
Delicious tacos! We were visiting San Diego for a wedding and had an Airbnb near Ortiz's Taco Shop. Their mini tacos are incredible and the perfect size/portion! Highly recommend the Carne Asada and Carnitas mini tacos. Their delicious and bite size. The food was reasonably priced and quickly made. We can't wait to come back to SD to get these tacos again :)
google avatar

Yelp
Best Tacos and Burritos in San Diego. Fresh ingredients and helpful staff. I feel blessed to have them close to my work and my church. Definitely my go-to first choice!

Kayla M.

Yelp
Amazing carne asada burritos! So yummy and big. There's a constant line at night so that's also a good sign
google avatar

Maggie F.

Yelp
Great burritos, a favorite of many high schoolers right after school. I definitely suggest the Cali burrito but anything you get here is bound to be good.
google avatar

Brian K.

Yelp
Awesome Cali Burrito. The ordering was quick but the wait afterwards was a little long. Once you take your first bite, you can understand why there's 20 people waiting in line to order. The decor is rather simple and the main reason to go here is for the food.
google avatar

Ash D.

Yelp
Awesome California burrito. One of my favorites in San Diego. Came out quickly and hit the spot after the beach. They were a bit stingy with my friend for hot sauce. They only gave him one for his two tacos and wouldn't give him another without charging.
google avatar

Shannon B.

Yelp
They never disappoint. Great tacos - I like the grilled shrimp and my husband likes the carne asada street tacos. Also love the veggie burrito, especially with grilled chicken. California burrito is yummy too. Consistency is spot on every time and their salsas are delicious!
google avatar

Yelp
My lady friend has been raving about Ortiz's Taco Shop in the Point Loma area of San Diego. We went twice on back to back days during our one day trip for LA. The shop is an unsuspecting small hidden gem in a little local strip mall with other restaurants. Their fish tacos were excellent, they use a special creamy secret sauce that gives your taco that added extra tasty zing on every bite. I had 3 fish and one carnitas which was also very good. Didn't get to try the chicken or beef tacos but I'm sure they are great. The next day I opted for the Fish Burrito but added the French fries for the California burrito experience, again Ortiz's burrito did not disappoint. Service was fine and not a very long wait considering it's a busy spot and lots of patrons coming in for lunch. Will return for sure if I'm in the area again. Thank you Ortiz's!
google avatar

Leslie B.

Yelp
I'm not much of a taco shop person. I love Mexican food, but usually I choose other types of Mexican restaurants. When I first moved to San Diego, however, I was obsessed with the taco shops, and therefore I am no stranger. Anyway, my husband wanted a carne asada burrito. I had a few errands to run on Voltaire, so I stopped by Ortiz's Taco Shop. I was greeted warmly at the register and given a few minutes to look over the menu. I ordered the carne asada and then a shrimp quesadilla for myself. I sat and waited for my order and was offered hot sauce to take with when my order was ready. I was ready for a typical quesadilla but what I got was much better than expected. First, it was huge. The price, which was $12.95 had seemed expensive, but first, it was seafood, and second, I was able to make two lunches from it. Also, a lot of quesadillas are just cheese. This had cheese, guacamole, tomatoes, onions and possibly more. The shrimp were large and plentiful. I didn't try my husbands burrito, but he was happy with it. I still am probably not going to be a regular at taco shops, but if I have a craving, I will go to Ortiz's.
google avatar

Bailey F.

Yelp
Best taco shop. Been coming here since college. The California burrito is the best I have ever had and continuously stays that way. One downside is that you now have to pay for guac in your burrito. So don't forget to ask for guac, because it doesn't come with them anymore and you might be disappointed to find no guac. Since we always have our dogs with us these days, we love picking up burritos and horchata and eating on Shelter Island. Just a few minutes drive away + great views. Eat in the car or on the sand.

Daring T.

Yelp
Oh, what a gem we stumbled upon at Ortiz's Taco Shop! Right from the moment we walked in, the experience was unforgettable. The cashier guy truly set the tone with his incredible sassiness; it was clear that taking our order was a major inconvenience for him. When I dared to ask for more salsa, he looked at me like I'd asked him to part the Red Sea. His reaction was priceless--pure, unfiltered irritation. I almost felt guilty for daring to want a little extra flavor on my food. Speaking of the food, it was exactly what you'd expect from a typical Mexican place--perfectly average. Just remember to bring your speed-ordering skills and a thick skin for when you dare to ask for more salsa. Enjoy!

Yelp
Would have liked a little more tomato and onion, but a very delicious Machaca Burrito for about $9.50 with tax.

Yelp
Stopped in for a late lunch based on the reviews. Got a beef and shrimp burrito. Very satisfying. Reasonable price for SoCal. Friendly service.

Yelp
Never seems to fail, authentic huge burritos. Always delicious. Best surf and turf burrito around. They did once give me a problem about my service dog. No one was in there, I came to pick up my order and the man was being very rude over my dog. It felt very hostile when responding that he was a service dog, he seemed to only get more upset and did no believe me. Other than that, we will continue to always go here.
