Searching Yelp recommendations in the area, Zion doesn't have a lot to offer, but Oscar's was an eatery I was looking forward to trying out, post-hike, because I was intrigued by their variety of Mexican staples, infused with some unique combinations (i.e their American-New Mexican fusion burgers- or their different style enchilada platters). They also had pretty reasonable prices, when comparing within the area.
We opted to split the whoop ass burger & the pork chops verde plate
Apparently, they stopped the complimentary chips & salsa awhile ago, now only offered as an appetizer at cost option- which we didn't opt in for.
The burger was large-juicy meat-well seasoned, with ample hatch green chili-loaded guac-and fresh veggie toppings- the fries were wonderfully crispy on the outside-warm and fluffy inside- when smothered in hot sauce hit the spot perfectly. Worth the price ($18)-a hearty dish-when splitting between the two of us, we both got an ample fill.
The porkchop verde plate I suggest passing on- I should have opted for my second choice the pork tamale platter (which I saw a diner nearby select and instantly regretted not ordering). At $22, the pork chops were small & not filling- topped only with about a tbsp each of green chili- not well seasoned, could have used another pop, like cheese or salsa- paired with dry rice and standard black beans- the dish was wildly underwhelming. So underwhelming, with each bit I tasted the ordering regret-especially at such a high price for such a low quality meal.
Overall, with a family from New Mexico who makes a lot of similar dishes, I have a high standard for Mexican eats- and they didn't wow my taste buds by any measure to go back again, but I recommend only because Zion has such limited options- I would say pick a burger, they at least do them well-
