Let me be clear - this is a review of the best burger in town. Oscar's is a great bar, but this is not a bar review. It's a burger review. But the burger is so good that if it means I give the "whole place" 5 stars, so be it.
When I go somewhere to get a high quality burger - a "Port of Call" burger - I have a pretty clear idea of what I want that burger to be:
High quality/fresh beef. Cooked exactly as ordered. And when a high quality burger is cooked rare or medium rare, the center is juicy and has just the right color and texture. And, hopefully, the outside has a nice, flame grilled flavor and texture. Flame cooked, but nearly rare, is what I want.
In the past 2 or 3 months, I've gone to Oscar's 3 times for their burger. And every single time, every single bite, gives me exactly what I dream of when I dream of a great burger.
I'm not arguing for medium rare, but I will suggest that MR is a tricky spot. One local "gourmet" burger place gives me rare every time. Most places give me medium (I've come to expect medium). Oscar's is 3 for 3 in giving me exactly what I think MR is.
Oh, and their potatoes have been perfectly baked the two times I've had them. They've been exactly fresh.
So you want the classic 8 oz burger and loaded potato meal that 2 or 3 places in NOLA are known for? Go to Oscar's. My personal quest for the Best Burger in Town is over. I've found it.
Oh....and I wondered if I could write this review without mentioning all of the Marilyn Monroe photos on the walls. Apparently not. :-)
