Best Restaurants Along I-95 in the Carolinas - Eater Carolinas

"Breakfast, lunch, or dinner at this downtown Roanake Rapids staple offers treats for kids and adults alike. The breakfast country ham slices with eggs comes with grits, biscuits, and coffee is about as Southern a welcome as you can find, while lunch and dinner entrees like fried chicken, country style steak with gravy, and hot roast beef all come with two vegetables and hush puppies or rolls. If you roll through on Wednesday or Sunday make sure to order the chicken pastry soup, and the kids are sure to love a corn dog and fries." - Matt Lardie, Erin Perkins

Google
This is a nice local diner style restaurant! Great for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, I stopped here after fishing Lake Gaston one evening and ordered the hamburger steak with gravy, mashed potatoes, and some French fries. I've also ordered the pancakes for breakfast, and those are perfect! Definitely recommend it to anyone who hasn't tried it.

Google
What a quaint place! We just love finding places like this. Great southern style food. My husband loved the butterbeans and corn (succotash). Our server and the helper were such hard workers. We're looking forward to going back!

Google
First time here. Been in the area my whole life and never been here, I would say it's a reason for that. But the Restaurant initially looked clean in the inside . The private area with the curtain threw me back. But I was excited to get the breakfast because the reviews on Google was making it seem like the food was going to be off the chain. Well we ordered breakfast and wasn't told we would get the mess from breakfast ending at 11am. Because that's what we got the bottom of the barrel. I would have rather her said we switching over to lunch then to feed us the end of the breakfast line. It was crazy . So the pancake was too thick. I didn't like the batter. The eggs were cooked fresh. The bacon was toooooo salty the biscuits were tooo thick. The potatoes and onions was the ending so they was just nasty. Looked like slop, literally. Check out the pics. AND PLEASE DONT GO TO OSCARS AROUND 1O55AM WANTING BREAKFAST YOU WILL GET THE LEFTOVERS. Wow. The food came so quick I didn't take a pic.

Google
Oh yum!! Delicious southern food made be true southerners-you can’t beat it. Loved the brown gravy. I can never make gravy like that. There’s a bunch of desserts I would love to try next time. Saw this on google search on our way to Myrtle Beach and it looked really unique. Love the 50’s vibe with the country guitars all signed. It’s nestled in a small country town with nice people. Super clean too!

Google
Wow! Went the Oscars looking for some local flavor and we were not disappointed. The service was top notch, the food was great! And we love the 50's diner atmosphere. The guitars autographed by various artists is a great addition. Thank you for a wonderful experience.

Google
I decided to give Oscar's a try for lunch. I was impressed with the decor a very old school diner type of feel. I was seated extremely fast. The menu was full of a variety of southern cuisine. I ordered some fried chicken, rice, and gravy. The chicken was hot and fresh, not much seasoning, on the food. I was impressed with the service. Not so much the food.

Ruth S.

Google
Clean, cozy, old fashioned diner. Real southern style food to the area. Prices are moderate, but not too pricey. I’m sure they have good desserts… I just couldn’t allow myself to order food I wouldn’t have room to eat it. The portions are well served. Ordered the grilled chicken BLT, with a side of pickled beets!

Google
Got to visit and see the autographed guitars. Old fashion diner menu, been in business since 1953, so they know how to cook and bake. Pies and cakes for dessert.

Yelp
Great diner. Clean environment, friendly staff. Jessica was attentive without being obnoxious. Everyone greeted upon entering. "Home cooking" menu items from a bologna sandwich to hamburger steak and gravy and everything in between. Fried gizzard, livers, chicken. Sandwiches, salads. My guy ordered hamburger steak, mashed potatoes, and fried okra. Me, fried flounder sandwich, cheesy potatoes, onion rings. Homemade dressings, come on! Excellent ranch for dipping. Everything was excellent. My grandma would approve. Pineapple cake to finish. Large enough to share. Yum. Unsweetened iced tea is excellent. They leave a pitcher to refill your own. Best stop if you're traveling I-95!

Yelp
5- for southern fried stuff, hubby's plate, it's solid 5 ( chicken gizzards perfect, cabbage (had pork in it), black eyed peas. 3.5- for me on chicken fried sandwich with rice and gravy. To me the rice / gravy needed more salt or flavor. Service- friendly, quick. Atmosphere- comfy diner seating, choose where you want to sit. Specials on different days. I'd like to return to try their chicken/ pastry ( Sundays and we'd). Would return.

Yelp
Very good food, friendly service and nice atmosphere. Oh yeah and the prices are great.

Yelp
Service is good and fast, the ladies there are very efficient. Food comes relatively fast. Just a run of the bill diner as far as food goes. Desert is pretty good. They keep it pretty cold in there, bring the sweater. Cool things hanging on the wall, here is the music they've got several signed guitars by prominent musicians. Coffee is always good and hot.

Yelp
We were on I-95 going to SC when we decided to get off the beaten path and not to eat at an interstate highway fast food type place. A YELP search led me here and I would do it again. My chicken sandwich was very good but the fried okras will lead me back here-excellent. Fried okras' in the DMV just don't come out right, for some odd reason. You gotta eat them in a southern state to get them done right, no disrespect to the DMV chef's intended. Our waitress was busy serving a lot of tables, juggling us all, just right. There were a lot of "to-go" meals coming out of the kitchen. Lot's of pick-ups.
google avatar

Jennifer S.

Yelp
AWESOME local restaurant! Would totally eat here all the time if I was a local except we only pass through on vacations to SC.
google avatar

Yelp
Great food and even better service! We stopped here for breakfast and were happy we did. Our bellies were full and we left smiling.

Yelp
If you come to Oscars do yourself a favor and ask for Helen. She is the sweetest sever in the whole establishment. She took what would have been a terrible experience and made it fantastic. We're just passing through and when we walked in we were told to just sit anywhere. Our original server, an older lady, never said hello or brought menus, napkins, or silverware. My husband went upfront to get menus and Helen stepped in. She came over and took our order and in ten minutes to less we had drinks and food in front of us. The food was fantastic my husband got the egg breakfast with biscuits and I ate most of his biscuits. They were phenomenal. I got a bacon and cheese omelet and it had the perfect amount of bacon in it. I even ordered something to go and she delivered it just as we finished so it was still warm. The to-go order was for the puppy in the car.

Cynthia O.

Yelp
All I can say about Oscars is the food is southern cooking to a tea being gluten-free. They have a chicken salad plate that you will not be hungry after you eat the collards, and the rutabagas are the best Oscars don't be surprised by the looks of the outside of the restaurant it is an old timestyle guitars on the walls. Just a really really cool love some Oscars.

Yelp
Huge portions and a nice down hometown feeling. Decor is nostalgic also. This place has been here forever. My father's told me stories about him and his friends having to go around to the back door for service before blacks were allowed in. The foods okay... I'm not a meat eater so I've only had the eggs and pancakes. More food than I can eat in one setting :)
google avatar

Brandon R.

Yelp
Fried pork chops with mashed potatoes and navy beans. Eat that. Your welcome. Staff is all Southern love, and the locals know the waitresses by name. This place is under 10 minutes from the highway and worth drive past all the fast food.

CJ S.

Yelp
Classic Southern diner, with guitars on the wall and hush puppies in the basket. Generous portions, lively service and all the comfort food favorites.

Yelp
We chose this place because of the ratings and the fact that it wasn't a chain. I was really disappointed, I think it might be the worst breakfast I've ever had, the food and service was subpar. We came on a weekday after the start of factory hours, so the restaurant was empty except for a few retired people. The place is beautiful, recently renovated and clean. Someone had to find out server. Eventually, she came to take our drink order, and had to be reminded two times what it was. OJ and coffee. My scrambled egg was not mixed properly and not cooked completely, it was slimy. The biscuit was good, I think, it's hard to say because the sausage gravy on it had a gluey consistency like it came from a can and wasn't hot, or even barely warm. His French toast was made with a soft white bread, so it was only briefly dipped in poorly scrambled egg, not soaked in a proper sweetened and spiced custard. Despite confirming he wanted powdered sugar, there wasn't any on it, and the butter wasn't real, but a yellow liquid margarine. The sausage was over cooked and dry.

Yelp
Be sure to ask for Melissa, most jovial server I've had in a long, long time. GREAT FOOD! GREAT PRICES! will definitely be back.

Ljohn D.

Yelp
Overcooked and not friendly waitress. It did have autographed guitars on walls, counter seating. Probably good at one time.
google avatar

Susan T.

Yelp
You walk in to a sincere greeting by staff. The service is prompt and the food is soooo good. They offer quite a choice of old time good food. The deserts looks delicious ( but I abstained on this visit). Very glad we stopped.

Yelp
Excellent breakfast as always! Good value, great friendly service and large portions!! Our friends from Virginia Beach loved it as first timers.

Yelp
Oscar's is a small town restaurant and the food is great at affordable prices. Staff is very friendly!

Yelp
The inside of this restaurant certainly was a nice surprise compared to the truly NOTHING outside of the restaurant Very cool nostalgic decor Our waitress (beyond friendly and southern hospitality sweet) immediately welcomed us and helped guide us to great menu selections BBQ chicken and Beef Stew Dessert was delicious Coconut Cake Everything fresh and homemade Highly recommend

Yelp
Friendly service with a smile, an inexpensive lunch, and not too far out of the way from where I was headed. I popped in to Oscar's during lunch time and went right to the day's special, barbecue chicken. A nice quarter chicken and a bowl of tasty cole slaw arrived and it was good. Perhaps a little sweet but otherwise delicious and very easy to eat with knife and fork. Tip: They make their own Ranch dressing so get a salad. [Review 11748 overall, 1530 of 2019.]

Yelp
If you only go for the banana pudding you will be in heaven. Everything else is just a bonus. Cute retro diner with quite a guitar collection. The staff are sweet and friendly. And the food .... Homey, southern, sweet. A delightful piece of history
google avatar

Amber D.

Yelp
Ah...the things I enjoy about small town eateries where the locals go, and keep coming back because it's THAT good. I don't think it's just that though....it's the actual people who work here. Their genuine love and concern for their customer base, the way they check on you because they WANT to not because they have to, and just the all around homey feel you don't get many places anymore. Yeah, in the hustle and bustle of today's world we can rush through it....through eating, through our everyday tasks, even our life for that matter...but remember, it's those "little" things that add up to a whole life of greatness! You can't put a dollar Amount on that! They are making an impact on people's lives daily with not only good food, but with great group of staff members (as well as the owners) who actually care...and that my friend is priceless!

Yelp
We were very excited to find this place, and could be worth your stop. We got charged for 3 waters - so that left a bad taste so to speak. I'll chalk it up to a mistake, although we were obviously travelers not from around there, I did wonder - I can't imagine charging anyone local for water. Generally the food was decent and felt like we were in a small-town diner. The BLT was good, as was the chicken. The grilled cheese sandwich had cheese that wasn't even fully melted. I'm not sure what others are saying about the prices though, as even without paying for water, this felt $$ for what it was.

Yelp
Vary nice place only had a problem once they fixed it right away. Good food vary nice waitress. Been there a few times.

Yelp
If your running down 95 and staying a night... stop in here for some local eats that are more .. well local than corporate trucked in stuff! The folk are all nice and the food was good. First time having rutabaga.. was interesting and would get it again. The fish cakes were just ok. It was the locals and the vibe that made you feel like you were back in time and not served a box of frozen re-heated foods.

Consuela H.

Yelp
Nice, neighborhood place with an old-timetable feel. Everybody seems to know everybody but we were warmly welcomed as visitors. Decent breakfast menu with run of the mill offerings that are well-prepared, served hot and with unlimited coffee. Sausage links, locally-made, I believe, were excellent. Generous portions. Cakes look homemade and good.

Yelp
What a great spot! Old fashioned diner at its best with gleaming turquoise, white and silver lunch counter, bar stools and booths. Looks like lots of locals choose this place and no wonder with hush puppies, fried cat fish, collards, beans, etc. It's a local treasure.
google avatar

Heather J.

Yelp
Great restaurant for home cooking, southern style. Old diner atmosphere and friendly staff.
google avatar

Yelp
This is a fantastic little spot with home cooking and an amazing selection of house made desserts. It has the bones of an old diner still and offers up great local favorites like Brunswick Stew. I had the crab cakes, which were good and creamy (they are covered in flour and fried) along with grits and side salad. The grits are delicious and creamy. My colleagues had the Brunswick stew and said it was excellent. They also had the hush puppies which looked more like savory donuts than cornmeal pups, but they still looked yummy. I had to take a dessert out with me, and chose the coconut cake. The cake was moist and rich, and they put a layer of coconut cream in the middle for extra flavor and moisture. Definitely yummy. (Forgot to take a photo, as I was too busy eating it!) The staff is super friendly. Certainly worth a stop!
google avatar

Liya M.

Yelp
Grabbed breakfast on our way out and handsdown the best pancakes I have had in a long time - you know, the type that are soft and fluffy in the middle with the crispy edges!? Oh yeah! Grits were on point too and so were those biscuits! Over all a super cute retro diner with good ol' southern friendly service!
google avatar

Judy S.

Yelp
Just enjoyed a delicious breakfast at Oscars! We decided to search out a hometown diner on our way home from OIB. The popular chain on the highway cannot compare! This place was clean and the food flavorful! We definitely feel the drive off the beaten path is well worth it! Nice music and an impressive guitar collection signed by famous artists!A steady stream of locals says it all.
google avatar

Tammy E.

Yelp
This place is off the beaten path somewhat but it's worth it . Diner style atmosphere with southern style menu. The fried chicken was crispy on the outside and moist on the inside . They feature a special each day of the week . Desserts were homemade and my husband loved his banana split . Our waitress was friendly and courteous . I definitely remember this place when I'm passing through .
google avatar

Yelp
Nice old fashion diner decor. The staff was friendly and prompt but after that I wasn't impressed. I had a grilled cheese with onions and tomatoes with a side of green fried tomatoes. The green fried tomatoes were done. The grilled cheese was still a little in the cold side and cheese barely melted, in the end it was just blah. Maybe I need to try the other dishes.

Greg B.

Yelp
First time we had been there. Loved it. Breakfast was great and I really liked the old-time diner atmosphere. It was readily apparent that this is where the locals go for good food and great conversation, and the staff was friendly and attentive. I'm a fan of Cracker Barrel's breakfast, but Oscar's is better, in my opinion.
google avatar

Amy F.

Yelp
Simple and delicious home cooking! My husband and I had the fried chicken and grilled chicken plates with various sides. The stewed black eyed peas and cabbage side dishes were the best. At the last minute we decided to split a piece of strawberry cake that hit the spot! Great little local spot on a summer road trip, loved it and would stop here again. Oh, plus the service was VERY fast! We weren't in a hurry, but it beat the lines at chain restaurants in town and was nice to get back on the road after a good meal.

Chris J.

Yelp
Great place to eat, wonderful staff I would recommend to anyone coming to town. Prices are great and portions big. Cheeseburger meal and fries so good.

Carol S.

Yelp
Appears to use veggies from processed can. Service is good, desserts quite pricy for what is served.

Yelp
A few weeks ago when in worked in "RoRap" some of the locals mentioned Oscar's and highly recommended it. This week my co worker and I decided to try it for lunch. The decor is unique, with one wall featuring autographed guitars. Who would expect seeing guitars signed by the likes of Trace Adkins and Jeff Foxworthy in a small town diner? The menu has breakfast items, sandwiches and dinners, but most of the menu is devoted to daily specials. I went with the daily special of hamburger steak and fries, and my co worker selected a hamburger. Our food was ready with very little wait time. Nothing spectacular about my meal, but it was an ample portion and good flavor. I had been told to make sure to get dessert, so I had the banana pudding. which was served in a parfait glass and was good to the last spoonful. When my co worker mentioned to the server that it was my birthday, she turned to another server who sang her version of The Beatles "Happy Birthday" song to me! Good experience
google avatar

Michelle S.

Yelp
Great diner, great company, and great food! I have known the owner for many years, and I know he prides himself in quality food and service. Fantastic family owned business.
google avatar

Lee K.

Yelp
This little diner is probably the best I've ever eaten at. Super busy with locals, everybody acts like they've known you for years and food is spectacular! Desserts are ridiculously good! Recommend it to everyone if you're in the Roanoke Rapids NC area!!!
google avatar

Karina D.

Yelp
I called them beforehand asking if they were dog friendly. The lady said yes. My husband and I drove 10 minutes out of our way to come here and now they kicked us out. Please get your employees trained so when they answer the phone they don't give the wrong information. My dog is medium sized and trained. There was no need for the kind of treatment we had, especially when it was their mistake. (Not forgetting to say that referring to someone's dog as " what is this thing doing here" is rude, obnoxious and unacceptable). What kind of people will say that? Unbelievable.
google avatar

Yelp
What a wonderful gem we are blessed with. Oscar's is a throwback restaurant that has been in business before the phrase throwback was invented. So glad it's just far enough from the I-95 crowd that it's still a locals place. I live at the Lake (Gaston) but still feel like Oscar's is hometown. Stopped in today and had a wonderful meal, flounder-collards-potatoes and fresh iced tea. Oh they also added hush puppies. It could not have been better. Sometimes living in a somewhat rural setting has its challenges but places like Oscar's sure makes up for it.

Roxanne W.

Yelp
Wonderful food, service, and atmosphere. Southern food perfectly cooked and presented. We ate the pork chops, chicken livers, pinto beans, fried apples and cabbage. Comfort food. It was the best meal on our two week road trip, which included homemade food prepared by my mother. It was so good that we came back the next day for a breakfast of country ham, biscuits, farm fresh eggs, sausage and grits, with extra butter. Awesome! Taking home a quart of the banana pudding to my parents too! Don't miss this treasure

Nicole P.

Yelp
Excellent breakfast! Nostalgic decor, real diner. Efficient and fast service. Seems to be a place where the locals go. We will definitely eat there again! Had eggs, hash browns, bacon, and wonderful biscuits. Coffee was great. Beautiful cakes on display but unfortunately did not get to taste those today.
google avatar

Joseph N.

Yelp
our first experience was not so great as the waitress had to leave mid breakfast and the waitress who she handed us over to REFUSED to take care of us AT ALL .. we didn't let that stop us from giving them another chance and we are glad we did .. their breakfast is amazing .. reminded me of a good Jersey diner breakfast .. the home fries/hash browns are actual potatoes slices with onions .. service was miles better .. thirds time we went we had lunch .. my burger was above average and my wife had a BLT which she enjoyed
google avatar

K R.

Yelp
Love this spot! If you're expecting gourmet cuisine, this probably isn't the best pick for you. The food is great, the service is better. Classic diner atmosphere with southern diner foods....chicken gizzards, burgers, sandwiches and sweet tea. I highly recommend this joint.

Robby R.

Yelp
Just went on a road trip from FL to the top of NY and back.... This was the best food I had on the entire trip. I don't know when I'll be back but I know I will be.
google avatar

Kimberly P.

Yelp
Delicious food all the way around, day or evening it is awesome. The desserts are so good, and my favorite thing to order is the country style steak in regular brown gravy without onions. Their vegetables are good, and taste fresh especially their butterbeans, plus the mashed potatoes and gravy. My husband loves it as much as I do, and every time we are in Roanoke Rapids we do our best to eat @ Oscar's !! Now I wish they would open one here in Wilson, as all of my husbands family eats there on a regular basis ! Awesome food, I sure miss the coconut cake :) Sincerely, Kim & David Pepper Jr. Wilson, NC

Yelp
Great place to eat and enjoy the atmosphere, country cooking at it's best. Serving are more than enough to fill you up, breakfast/lunch/supper. Place to eat if you are visiting Roanoke Rapids

India M.

Yelp
Food was plentiful but too expensive, service was slow and restaurant too small. Coffee was cold. Staff seems friendly. Diners were frequent diners by the way they were on name to name basis. Demographics mostly white and black.
