"A small barrier island notable for its distinctive population of hogs; a feature story framed the island as the setting for an eccentric heiress’s audacious conservation mission to protect what the piece called North America’s most unusual pig, combining natural-history reporting with a human-driven effort to save an endangered local agricultural legacy." - Eater Staff

"Presented in a multi-page family- and tradition-rich recipe for a smoked island hog roast (or How to Host a Pig Roast), this account ties a heritage island hog breed to the author’s family land on the Georgia coast and to Gullah Geechee culinary history. It blends practical, often hands-on instruction — preferred breed notes; how to build a roasting pit using repurposed box springs; the old trick of placing an apple in the animal to promote even heat; and rendering fatback into leaf lard for frying — with ancestral context, aiming to point readers toward success while assuming some prior cooking knowledge." - Marian Bull
Spent half the day here and enjoyed the beach with our close neighborhood friends. Nice beach, pristine sand, and you're able to walk around the island. They say they camp here overnight as well. Bring the grill and bbq, a cooler full of beers is all you need. Wear plenty of sunblock.

Every October TOIF has an annual “pig roast” fund raiser and art auction at the main house on Ossabaw.
