A place that accepted us on NYE despite being packed. Food turned out great. Was greeted and treated very warmly by the staff. Seated at the bar and loved the service by the bartender. He was on top of everything

Went here while traveling to NYC and had a great experience! The food was delicious. Quick service but didn't feel rushed. Would definitely recommend reservations because they filled up quickly!

On January 2, 2025, my wife and I had tickets to a Broadway play and, happening upon Osteria Al Doge across the street from the theatre, decided to have lunch there. The atmosphere of Osteria Al Doge is clean, bright and comfortable. We were imnmediately seated and thereafter greeted by our server Aaron. The service was excellent, as Aaron answered questions about dishes in a clear, articulate and helpful manner. He was attentive without being intrusive and everything one would want in a server when dining out. We were provided a bread bowl and plates of olive oil, a pleasant and delicious start to our meal. As an appetizer, we ordered Polpo Al Carbone - grilled baby octopus, fingerling potatoes, celery, cherry tomatoes and Taglasca olive salad with salsa verde. We are very familiar with octopus appetizers and in the many ways in which it is served. My wife and I were split in our opinions as to the Polpo Al Carbone - she thought is was tasy and I thought that in the portioins near edges, the grill flavor overwhelmed the octopus flavor. Notwithstanding my prefreence for Spanish olive oil with octopus, the Itaiian olive oil makes sense in this appetizer (given that we were dining in an Italian Restaurant). My wife and I both laud the great taste of all that accompanied the octopus. My wife ordered a special, paprdelle with funghi. She truly enjoyed the pasta and the wonderful flavor of the mushrooms. I, too, opted for mushrooms, choosing the Sacloppine Ai Funghi. The veal medallions and mushroom sauce did not disappoint in any way and the fingerling potatoes and spinach went well-complemented the protein and sauce. We no longer live in New York, but visit often. We will not hesitate to dine at Osteria Al Doge when next we come into the City. With so many available chocies to Italian fare, I recommend Osteria Al Doge the next time you seek a quality meal and dining experiuence.

I made a reservation in advance for Saturday at 6 PM to celebrate my friend's birthday. When I realized we were running late, I called the restaurant to inform them, and they said it was fine. However, when we arrived just 10 minutes late, they told us they couldn’t accommodate four additional people. Eventually, they managed to find a table for us on the second floor, but it was in a narrow passage. The seating was extremely cramped, and the temperature was uncomfortably hot. There was no place to hang our coats, so we had to pile them on the seats. While the food was good and our waiter did his best to improve the situation, the mood had already been ruined. Eating while sweating profusely was not the experience we were hoping for. Unfortunately, I’m certain I won’t be returning to this restaurant.

We made reservations for Valentine’s Day and we were sat immediately upstairs. It was a comfortable experience. The place seems well staffed so service was very quick, but didn’t feel rushed at all. Food was fresh and very good. I would recommend if in the Times Square area and need a solid Italian meal that is at good prices. Free bread as well at the table.

This spot was perfect for dinner before a show. They were able to squeeze us in and the atmosphere was so cozy. Service was very attentive and checked on us often. We got the fritto misto as an appetizer and had the pappardelle ragu and the ricotta ravioli. Everything was very flavorful and yummy.

Google
Food was excellent, I’m very picky, they had no problem making what I wanted. Started off with grilled octopus which was very good. Very happy with the meal and service.

Google
Found this restaurant some years back when going to a Broadway show , it’s right there ,a smaller more intimate place, not a chain. Great food ,service now go there mostly at Xmas for the classy decorations great food & The Panettone dessert. I would just go for that had it several times and just perfect. Went last night for 75th birthday all I thought about for weeks was having that dessert and found out that night, last night, they do not have it every night of Xmas season .Last night NO PANETTONE. If you go at Xmas now I know you have to call ahead for a reservation & ask for a night when the Panettone is on the dessert menu. Disappointed in Bellmore Long Island today but I will get over it .And I will still return it is fun chock full of classy decorations at Xmas and good food year round & I know to call ahead for their perfect version of Panettone. Happy holidays .

Yelp
Great upscale atmosphere! Pasta is delicious. Server seemed annoyed with teenagers even though were quiet and behaving appropriately.

Yelp
A six diner meal in an upstairs corner round table, pre theater. First, they were efficient, u estranging we had time and no more Second, they were *energetic*. A lead server with a charismatic warm personality of a longstanding pro who had not become tired or jaded in the job. He was great. Recommended dishes--all were a hit-- made us feel, welcome, chatted and felt unrushed, thought he had miles to cover. Thirdly, yes, the food. Hearty italian dishes prepared with subtleties. Just excellent.

Yelp
Great service. Okay food. Small portions. I started with the grilled vegetables and had some caprise as well. They were good, on par with other restaurants. For the main meal, I got the salmon. Salmon tasted good but the sautéed spinach was quite oily and I could not eat it. For dessert, I got the chocolate cake. The chocolate cake was the best I have had. Quite good. For me the ambience was very poor, however . We were seated upstairs in the corner and I faced the wall and sat next to a closed door. Not the way I thought I would spend my evening before the theater!

Yelp
Great location! Great service! Greeted by host and sat me down right away and then when my daughter arrived he directed her right to me. Waiter was awesome. He asked what time our show was to make sure we were served and out but we had plenty of time. He answered all our questions. From the outside it looks small but when you go in it is surprisingly large and packs in a lot of tables. The menu was diverse - Italian food. From cold apps to hot apps, cheeses, salads, pastas, seafood, meats and even pizza options. Lots of options. I would definitely go back!!! It's perfect for a pre-theatre meal.

Yelp
We called this restaurant after our first choice was booked all night. The front desk was friendly and welcomed us in. The restaurant has an authentic feel. The bread was delicious and served with olive oil. We started with the burrata cheese and calamari. The burrata cheese is served with beets and tasted fresh, and the calamari and shrimp were served with a scrumptious sauce. I ordered the Paccheri ai Frutti di Mare which had a nice sauce and a healthy serving of seafood. My wife ordered the shrimp risotto, and was one of the best we ever had. The lasagna was delicious, and the sautéed mushrooms were cooked well. The place was a great choice and a convenient spot for anyone visiting Time Square.

Michael J.

Yelp
The staff here always make you feel so welcome. Then the food tells the whole story. I feel almost as though dining in a family home in Italy. Good, rounded menu selections always delicious. Though I am always amused by those diners who appear concerned by the non red sauce offerings. Though good, I go for the Italian mainstays with other preparations and saucing.

Yelp
Well, this restaurant been around for 36 years and I finally got an opportunity to try it. I pass it many times why I didn't go. I'm not sure but I'm glad I went this time. We had the bread basket complementary delicious with olives and breadsticks and olive oil. We had the special salad fry artichokes which was really good little pricey, but good. I had the salmon came with spinach and potatoes which I enjoyed and we also had one of the pasta, Lamb Bolognese which was very good we had the apple upside down cake for a birthday celebration. The waiter was excellent. I will definitely be coming back.

Grant P.

Yelp
We had a party of 5 and reservations. We were seated immediately and they were nice enough to put us at a table where we had a 6 join us for apps. Seated upstairs we had plenty of room and the place was a nice. Bruschetta was ok but what we really can for was the pasta and that was great , from the spinach ravioli to the tagliatelle bolognese to the risotto special, you couldn't have found better in the city. Our waiter was awesome , asking when our play was so we were out on time to always checking in to see what we need. Dessert was gelato and apple tart which the group liked. All in all we would definitely go back.

John C.

Yelp
They accommodated my walk in request for a same day dinner reservation, in Times Square, the day of the Tree Lighting. So..bonus points. Pulpo was outstanding. Pasta dishes were solid. Veal Shank was very good. Place is bigger than it appears from the outside. Upstairs tables are nice but the room is hard for the waitstaff to navigate. Nice Holiday vibe. I'd return.

Jaime E.

Yelp
We came at 9:45pm on a Wednesday night after a show. There were maybe 3 other tables eating dinner, we had the whole place to ourselves. I was worried that after a long shift, the waitstaff would be grouchy and rush us along, not even close. They were welcoming and very attentive. The photos don't do our dinners justice. I had the spinach and ricotta ravioli. The butter sage sauce was wonderful. Not too salty and not oily, just perfectly balanced. The raviolis were tender and filled with delicious spinach filling. You get a basket of bread with you meal which I used to sop up any butter sauce leftover. My date had the Paccheri (wide ziti) with seafood. It had a really amazing tomato-based sauce. I mean this sauce was so good I was wishing it was a stand alone soup dish! Again the bread on the table came in handy. Our waiter, Jamie, didn't miss a beat filling glasses and getting drink orders. We had the lemon tart which wasn't my fave even though it had a cool crème brûlée topping. I won't hold it against them. I'd like to try the tiramisu or the flourless chocolate lava cake next time. And there will be a next time!

Yelp
Osteria al Doge is one of my favorite NYC restaurants. It has two floors, very nice decor, exceptional service, and.....of course..... a-m-a-z-i-n-g food. Our two entrees were incredible.....Ravioli di Ricotta e Spinaci (homemade ravioli filled with spinach and ricotta cheese, in a butter sage sauce) was so soft, flavorful, and the remaining butter sage sauce was elegantly sponged up with the complimentary buttery bread. The Pollo al Limone (marinated chicken breast with sautéed zucchini and parsley roasted potatoes in a lemon sauce) came with two well seasoned pieces of chicken and I enjoyed how they cut up the zucchini into thin strips, which made it easier to eat. For dessert, we shared the Tortino al Cioccolato (gluten free chocolate cake with moist melting heart and Tahitian vanilla gelato). This was one of the best desserts I've ever had. The cake was M.O.I.S.T., the edges had the ideal crunchiness, and the gelato complemented each bite to complete enjoyment. Please, TRY IT! The Double Espresso, with a side of milk, was the perfect cap to this memorable meal. I cannot recommend Osteria al Doge enough. Come in, in order to be treated like royalty and enjoy a fine meal. Oh, don't forget to make reservations.

Peter C.

Yelp
Been coming here for 20 years and never disappointed. Food and service are both excellent! It is small and can get crowded and loud, but it's NYC, and it's crowded for a reason. Definitely recommend!

Austin K.

Yelp
I came here on Thursday 6pm, and it was not so busy, but really cleared out around 7pm once people had to go to their shows. It was a business dinner and got to try a little bit of a few dishes. The complimentary bread basket came with a few different things and the focaccia was my favorite. The fried calamari/shrimp was good, not overcooked, as well as the grilled calamari. We also got the Octopus carpaccio special, which was decent but wouldn't get again. The others had more flavor in comparison. I got the mushroom risotto, which is creamy and the shaved parmesan cheese on top was sufficient although I did take some black pepper once the waiter came around. I had a glass of the Sancerre, which was nice but I probably could have drank a more crisp wine for the risotto. A nice sipping wine though, I was tempted to drink all of it before the entree. Finished with a lemon tart which is very tart but still sweet, which is how it should be.

Lewis P.

Yelp
Great atmosphere. Evokes old school NYC in the middle of tourist and theater district. Went on a whim after a show and lived it. Service was impeccable.

Josh F.

Yelp
Cris took great care of us! Had a Broadway show to make so we were under a bit of a time crunch. Everything came out quickly and was delicious but the service was the highlight. Would absolutely go back!

Elissa D.

Yelp
Great place to grab a bite before a broadway show. While the service was quick and efficient, they didn't scrimp on the quality of the food. Giant portions as well. Will def be back soon

Jessica V.

Yelp
While the entire staff was extremely kind, efficient, and attentive, the apple tart that I ordered was extremely disappointing. I only ordered dessert so I can't comment on the rest of the food, but definitely steer clear of the apple tart. The dough was flavorless mush. Very disappointing.

Aly S.

Yelp
Food was delicious and served quickly; service was very attentive. We both enjoyed our meals - lasagna, and calf livers which you don't often find on menus.

Juju W.

Yelp
Pretty restaurant. The Paccheri seafood pasta was delicious w mussels, clams, calamari, shrimp. It could of used some heat tho. My friends lasagna however was dry and missing cheese? Very little mozzarella and no ricotta, so not a recommend. The waiter really upselled the prosciutto and melon which was fine except we didn't order it. We let it go. Service was prompt but they forgot our bread basket. We did ask for it and got it. While the ambiance was beautiful, it didn't feel chill w the drinks, water, app, entree upsells. Creme brulee was delish and pretty standard. An oddity was that different types if coffee were on menu except regular coffee. When inquired, our waiter delivered. Restaurant is close to theatres and good if you need to be in vicinity.

Julia P.

Yelp
We had dinner at this restaurant before our 8pm off Broadway show. We made reservations and were seated immediately. The waiter was welcoming and got us started with drinks and appetizers. He told us that they would make sure we made our show in time which was considerate. We had a plain salad for appetizer and the grilled salmon, potato and sautéed spinach. Absolutely delicious! I ordered the ravioli also delicious and filling. We finished the meal with their creme brulee which was 10/10. It was rich ! But very satisfying. This place is great for date night (dimmed lights, intimate space)

Melanie B.

Yelp
This is a great pre-theater dinner spot right off of times square. The ambiance, service and food was well worth it.

Dean C.

Yelp
Lovely Italian restaurant destination in the theater/time square area. Open and (post-COVID remodel) refreshing country kitchen ambience. GREAT menu with special s and luncheon prix fixe. Personal favorites - chicken paillard; grilled chicken Caesar; grilled octopus; lasagna - lovely chicken paillard for lunch today-

Mark T.

Yelp
A bustling Italian delight. We had pasta dishes before a show across the street. The complimentary bread assortment is a wonderful touch. We started with a carpaccio appetizer that was excellent too. For all the bustle, the service could have been more attentive, but the food was excellent. A crowded, fun place for dinner!

Thomas B.

Yelp
Always our favorite spot in Manhattan! Authentic Italian ( not Italian American) food; great service; reasonable prices. If they're full ask fot a seat at by the bar.

Dede F.

Yelp
Tiago is an excellent waiter! Just a few blocks from grand central.... The place is bustling with theater goers with a deadline. The wait staff is attentive and quick to refill you water and bring you your meal. The pasta and risotto are so tasty and prepared with the perfect balance of well designed sauces. The burrata and beet appetizer is not to be beat with a generous, yummy portion. There is a lovely wine list to boot! Need to go back to try the dessert!

Sibethera K.

Yelp
Great food! We had grilled kalamari, burrata, rissoto and swordfish. Our waiter Omar went above and beyond!

Madaline C.

Yelp
Had been waiting for post covid opening, when I went several moths ago they were closed for a private party boo, but finally got back. Just as great as before. We shared a beautifully prepared carpaccio and tagliatelle bolognese. Really just outstanding light bolognese sauce, perfect cooked. I noted in my review 4 years ago no sideways glances or up charges for sharing and it was the same. No pretentious attitudes here, just excellent service in a very nice environment and outstanding food and drinks.

Daniel B.

Yelp
Such a quaint restaurant in the midst of the Theater District - with a beautiful decor and a homey feel. The bread for the table contained four different types of bread with some olives - all delicious. For our appetizer we had bruschetta which was served on a wonderfully crisp bread and was good, though probably wouldn't order again. My friend had the fettuccini and crab meat special while I had the vegetable ragu - and both were phenomenal. For dessert, I had the apple tart and she had the creme brûlée and both were definitely worth getting! Service was responsive and sure to get us out on time for our show - even asking what time curtain was when we sat down to be sure we'd be there on time.

Greg E.

Yelp
Warm and inviting restaurant right off of Times Square. Perfect for a pre theater dinner. Food was good. Nothing outstanding but everything was solid and reasonably priced (for NYC). Enjoyed the grilled calamari app and orecchiette and sausage. Spaghetti and clams was uneventful. Service was super friendly and efficient. Only complaint is the tables are small and tight to your neighbor.

Shanna H.

Yelp
Wonderful spot after the show. Birthday dinner. Romantic, service was exceptional and the food was fantastic! Would definitely recommend.

Melissa F.

Yelp
The spinach ravioli was delicious!!! The crème brûlée was very tasty. Very cozy environment.

James W.

Yelp
Great place for pre theater dinner. The food is good and the service is attentive. It is always our go to place.

Tim O.

Yelp
Classy pre-theatre dinner serving authentic Italian cuisine (al dente is al dente). Also opens at 11:30 for lunch during the week, so I am looking forward to returning.

Brayan B.

Yelp
Where do I begin... the food was absolutely amazing. Service and ambiance was fabulous. Family and I had the carpaccio and grilled calamari to start with. Wasn't a big fan of the calamari but the carpaccio had so much favor. Finally got dinner, we had the lamb pasta and lamb entree. The lamb pasta had so much favor that I literally was licking the plate. Definitely would come back again.

Esther L.

Yelp
My cousins and I had the pleasure to dine here around the Christmas holidays. The atmosphere was very warm and welcoming. The space was a bit small but cozy. Very romantic for a date night. The staff was friendly and accommodating. The food was absolutely amazing. I can't remember the names of our dishes but they were delectable. Perfectly seasoned and filling! We absolutely must return soon.

Stewart L.

Yelp
Perfect theater restaurant. NYC Italian fare. Super busy at 6:30. Good hot food. Excellent Fried Calamari and Shrimp (more shrimp please). Special was Spaghetti and Meatballs - how could you not? Very good. Not quite Mama's but tasty and satisfying. Orecchiette with broccoli and sausage was very good. Too full for dessert. Restaurant is directly across from the Hudson Theater and close to all Broadway theaters. Place was packed waiter was great. It's pretty too. Nice and clean. Loud and busting. Total theater district experience.

Aimee P.

Yelp
Very consistently good. Best calamari in nyc. Fresh, tender, lightly battered. Homemade spinach ravioli in butter sage sauce is delicious although I did add grated cheese salt and pepper. Ambience is superb. It's a smaller quaint restaurant that I return to almost every time I am in midtown for work. It's my Italian place on 44th. never disappointed.

Stacey S.

Yelp
They knew we were going to the theater and they helped move along our dinner. Delicious dinner, super fast and very friendly service. A staple of my many NY visits for authentic Northern Italian food and very nice dining. Great location for theater goers.

cheryle w.

Yelp
The food was great & it's in a good location for the theaters. It's a very noisy room & the room itself is nothing special. I'd give it 5 if the restaurant itself was quieter & they turned the lights down a bit.

James G.

Yelp
We enjoyed a gracious greeting, despite the fact that we had no reservation, and it was a fairly busy pre-theater dinner hour. We were seated, and our waiter then quickly stepped up and brought a friendly atmosphere to our experience. His recommendations were all spot-on. We started with the Arancini, crispy outside, creamy inside. A perfect starter for the table of three (I snagged the extra one!) I had the rich and delicious Short Rib special, with delicious potatoes, whipped and buttery. The Kale that came with it was perfectly cooked, soft enough, yet the stems had a slight crunch that gave them a wonderfully mixed texture. The pasta with a Green Peas and Cream Sauce was delicious, if under seasoned, and a bit "over-pea-ed". It was good enough, and the flash-frozen peas (fresh peas are out of season now) were still al dente, and had good near-fresh flavor. They have a well varied wine list, at a good span of prices. The Bread Pudding dessert was exceptionally good, and just enough for there three of us to share, and not leave the table too full for theater. Speaking of which, The service was timely, and got us to the theater on time!

Robin K.

Yelp
Osteria al Doge This Italian restaurant, well located in the HEART of the theatre district, serves good, hearty, Italian dishes by a friendly, experienced staff. Venturing in for an early dinner after a matinee, we were pleasantly surprised by the lively, expansive interior. The salad mista was fresh and yummy with shaved Parmesan. The margarita pizza was large and enjoyed. The pappardelle pasta was delicious and prepared with seafood in a light, flavorful red sauce. The pasta was DEVOURED. The prices are reasonable. The staff is friendly, and very attentive to special requests. Osteria Al Doge IS, as they say in the theatre, "a triple threat" 1) reasonably priced, tasty food, 2) attentive staff, 3) lively ambiance.....all of which make it a theatre district go to spot.

Chuck C.

Yelp
Outstanding lunch, not rushed, great waiter, Omaer (more on him but I recommend you request him; you won't be disappointed). We were seated upstairs which was much quieter than being downstairs with the local lunch crowd. The location is perfect for the Times Square neighborhood. One of the best "extras" was that Omaer never wrote down anything for our part of six -- but he remembered everything, including who ordered what; this is a lost art in restaurants. Frank is the manager at the door. I will be returning on my next visit to NYC.

Myra S.

Yelp
Good, solid Italian restaurant. Great location, smack in the middle of Times Square theater district.

Heather M.

Yelp
Food was ok. Lovely ambience for time square. Drinks were excellent. I had a dish with sausage and broccoli that was quite bitter.

Miss P.

Yelp
Came for dinner before the show and wasn't disappointed. Authentic Italian cuisine at its best. Friday night gets very busy and reservations required. Service is fast and very efficient. Food is amazing, I had one of the best risotto and the most delicious tiramisu. Highly recommend for anyone looking for good food near Times Square.

Tory w.

Yelp
This place is a true gem in the heart of all the Times Square mayhem. In a sea of overpriced, sub-par tourist traps, al Doge is a delightful oasis. It's definitely noisy and busy, so don't expect an intimate candlelight dinner. The service is impeccable and attentive, the entire staff is genuinely friendly and concerned that everyone is enjoying their meal. The food is quality, fresh, delicious, and prepared with love. We had the mixed salad, penne pomodoro, and orecchiette with sausage and broccoli rabe. We were too full for dessert but that looked delicious as well.

Madison S.

Yelp
This restaurant is located very close to Times Square and is the perfect place to enjoy a pre Broadway show dinner! The staff was friendly, efficient and professional. The pasta was melt in your mouth delicious and the wine choices were plentiful and amazing! It felt like we took a step into Italy!

Todd B.

Yelp
We hadn't been to this Theater District standby in some time, and are very glad we went back. The food, which has always been consistently solid, is definitely better than ever: the grilled calamari salad was wonderful and packed with flavor which *truly* tasted of the grill. Orecchiette with sausage and broccoli rabe is one of the simplest pasta dishes in the world, and one of my favorites -- yet very few restaurants seem to execute it perfectly. Osteria al Doge's rendition was as close to perfect as I've ever tasted, with exactly the right proportion of pasta to sausage and greens, and the sauce *just* brothy enough to nestle into the orecchiette but not become a soupy puddle in the bottom of the bowl. And, most importantly, the pasta was *perfectly* al dente. My husband loved his branzino; a seemingly innocuous side of sautéed mushrooms actually made us swoon; and for dessert, the lemon tart was exactly that: intensely lemon-y and bracingly tart. Service was excellent, as well, and what's really nice in 2024 is that the kitchen serves well past 10pm, which is becoming increasingly rare, even in the Theater District. We had actually left the show we were attending at intermission, but any disappointment over that experience quickly dissipated with each delicious bite of our perfect meal at Osteria al Doge. Bravo!

Holly H.

Yelp
Overall, a not so great experience here for a place that is rated fairly high. When I entered the restaurant in late evening, no one greeted us even though the bartender was standing behind the counter near us. Had to wait 5-10 minutes before a man walked up to the bartender and appeared to be asking her something (later found out he was asking if we were waiting to be seated). She shrugged and looked at me inquisitively (rather than asking us if we wanted to be seated), and I told her we wanted a table for four. They brought out a bread basket, but they forgot to bring the balsamic and olive oil (had to ask for it and pour it out ourselves, which is not the experience I would expect at a higher-end Italian restaurant). The waitress eventually came to take our order, but while a member of my party was asking a question, the waitress left in the middle to talk to another member of the staff. This seemed pretty rude, especially since she barely started taking our order before she left again because if she needed to talk to that staff member, she should have done so either before she came to our table or after she took our order. A member of my party had food allergies, and there were many options they could not eat because they were allergic to at least one component of many of the dishes. It was unfortunate that components could not be swapped out (i.e. swapping out one protein for another, perhaps with an up charge), but this was not entirely unexpected. However, there were a few items on the menu that we were told had none of the allergens the member of my party listed, so they ordered one of those. Unfortunately, the waitress came back saying there was butter in the sauce and were asking if it was okay when we made it very clear that since it was an allergy, it was not okay. The person with the allergy even suggested bringing out regular tomato sauce, but the waitress went to the kitchen and returned saying that they cooking staff would make something without butter for her. Then, another member of the waitstaff brought out the dish and said the sauce had butter. We told the waitstaff that this was not okay, and after much discussion, they brought out tomato sauce like we had suggested earlier. As for my food, it was pretty mediocre. I had the raviolis with salmon, and it was a small portion for the price. Another member of my party had the lasagna, which was also okay, but no different from a lasagna at a place with lower prices and better service. I would not eat at this place again nor would I bring anyone with allergies here as they do not seem to be mindful of this issue. They do have gluten free pasta, but there are many ravioli options which they cannot make gluten free.
