Yelp
We chose Osteria Cotto e Mangiato because it's on the San Diego Symphony's list of premier dining partners (with a 15% discount for symphony-goers) and it's conveniently located just two blocks from the concert hall. The menu looked appealing, and the location made it an easy pre-concert choice.
First visit: We were seated immediately and greeted quickly. Since we had reviewed the menu ahead of time, we placed our drink, appetizer, and entrée orders all at once after water was poured. Drinks took a while to arrive, and then--surprisingly--our entrées came out before the appetizer. We couldn't get our server's attention, so we started eating our entrées. Eventually, we flagged down another staff member to ask about the missing appetizer. By the time our server finally came back to the table, we had finished our entrées, had not been offered drink refills, and still didn't have our appetizer. The appetizer arrived roughly 45 minutes after it was ordered. The server never checked in on our meal and only returned to close out the bill. We chalked this up to a potentially busy night because, despite everything, the food itself was good.
Second visit: Wanting to give them a fair second chance, we returned a few weeks later. Again, we were seated immediately and greeted promptly. This time, we deliberately paced our order--wine and an appetizer first--and clearly told the server we would wait to order entrées until the appetizer arrived. Thirty minutes passed with no drinks and no appetizer. When the server returned to ask if we wanted to order entrées, we reminded her we were still waiting on both the appetizer and our drinks. Another 15 minutes went by with nothing. A manager stopped by, and we honestly explained the situation. His response was a cold, non-solution apology, along with a comment that many other people have good experiences here--an inappropriate and dismissive response given the circumstances. Shortly after, the drinks and appetizer finally arrived, the appetizer was thankfully still warm and tasty, and once ordered, the entrées were delicious.
We really want to like this restaurant. The food is genuinely good, and the staff we interacted with were kind. Unfortunately, across two visits, the service and pacing issues were consistent and significant. There appears to be a serious breakdown in management and front-of-house logistics. With better oversight and coordination, this could easily be a standout dining option near the Symphony--but until then, it's hard to recommend if timing and attentive service matter to you, especially before an event.
