At dinner the previous evening, we asked our server Renato at Ristorante Paris (read my review on that restaurant) to recommend a place that he would go to for dinner, not touristy and not fine dining. He recommended this place and offered to make reservation for us.
We arrived with our table ready and started with the wine list. Here, I did not know which bottle of wine to order, so we asked our server, Daniele for a recommendation. I was looking for something like a cabernet, but on the dry side, not too fruity. He made an excellent choice as all four of us liked it very much and ended ordering 4 bottles for the rest of the night.
We started the meal with sautéed mussels, and grilled octopus. The mussels were big and cooked perfectly, the sauce, we had to order more bread to mop it up, delicious. The grilled octopus on the menu said - carpaccio di polpo, so I thought it was like a traditional carpaccio (raw and sliced thin) but it was grilled, which was okay because it was delicious, with an excellent texture, not rubbery at all.
Pastas:
Spaghetti alle vongole, spaghetti with clams in a white wine sauce, which was amazing. I asked Daniele if he could add cherry tomatoes to the dish, he did. It actually reminded me of the same dish I had years ago in Positano, Italy. It was light and fresh and just amazing. You'd think - how hard could it be to make this dish amazing? you'd be surprised.
Tagliolini spigola e pachino - tagliolini with striped bass and tomatoes. Nothing bad to say about this dish either, pasta was a perfect al dente and the sauce amazing. The fish was cut into small pieces but did not detract from the overall look or flavor at all. Two in my party had this dish.
Spaghetti alla pescatora - spaghetti with seafood sauce. Again, everything about this dish was great.
For dessert, which we could have ordered earlier, when we found out the kitchen was closing, we weren't thinking that dessert would be finished too. But, we saw another table's dessert. One of the waiters whisked fresh whipped cream at their table and poured it over fresh berries. Just the show alone of him whipping the cream would have been reason enough to order it.
This restaurant was the best meal we had in Rome, if we had another night there (we only had 2), we would have certainly gone back for another meal. The service was incredible, very attentive and Daniele, our server made it better by treating us like we were regulars. We paid $170 euro for the meal and gave him $40 euro as a tip for the excellent service.
Daniele if you read this review, thank you so much again for everything! - from the group that needed a wine bucket to chill the red wine. We hope to see you again in the future.
