Metro Detroit’s Best Oysters | Eater Detroit

"This swanky new downtown seafood restaurant from the folks at the London Chop House features a rotating selection of fresh oysters flown in daily. Your best bet is to order them by the dozen and be sure to mix and match a few different varieties to get the full scope of Ostrea’s offerings. Oh, and it couldn’t hurt to throw the shucker a tip, either. Tipping the oyster shucker a few bucks cash is standard practice in New Orleans, and always a classy move whenever you’re dining out at a restaurant. Each platter of oysters at Ostrea comes served with a cucumber and chardonnay mignonette that’s lovely, fresh, and effervescent. You’ll want to apply the sauce generously." - Danny Palumbo

Detroit’s Best New Restaurants, May 2025 | Eater Detroit

"The owners behind downtown’s iconic London Chop House have opened Ostrea Seafood on the ground level of the Murphy Telegraph Building at W. Congress and Shelby streets. If the steakhouse around the corner is dedicated to thick cuts of meat and red wine, consider this the splashy neighbor catering to your caviar and Champagne whims. Splurge on decadent menu items like oysters, grilled swordfish, lobster, and tuna tartare, order from the full bar, and enjoy the opulence from comfortable seating. To find the entrance, be on the lookout for a 9-foot-tall mermaid sculpture attached to signage saying “the world is your oyster.” So posh." - Serena Maria Daniels

Detroit’s Best Seafood Restaurants | Eater Detroit

"Ostrea is an ostentatious new seafood restaurant in Downtown Detroit from the ownership behind London Chop House. Located on the ground level of the Murphy Telegraph Building, Ostrea features a fairly extensive raw bar with both East and West Coast oysters, chilled lobster, shrimp, salmon tartare, plus an option for the ever-decadent seafood tower. Highlights from Ostrea’s “warm compositions” menu include uni bucatini, cioppino, shellfish chowder, and crab rangoon raviolo. There’s also caviar service. Ostrea isn’t cheap, but it’s a destination for those looking to splurge on seafood in an elegant setting. — Danny Palumbo" - Serena Maria Daniels

Ok, so listen up. This place is a gem. I'm from Cincinnati OH and the hospitality, the ambiance, the food is top of the line. I travel for work often. The experience i had here is above most if not all places ive been and I have experienced a lot. You must come to Ostrea if you love seafood. Even at some of the ocean front restaurants I have been to this place beats them. Thomas who specializes in their craft bar menu is a wizard at cocktails and conversation. I can't say enough about this place and the experience ive had.

Went here before London chop house and boy am I glad I did because it was a MUCH better experience at Ostrea. They had mini menus downstairs for Ostrea and it was the cutest thing EVER. The oysters were the best I’ve ever had. The service was swift and efficient. I was admiring the decor the whole time. And the espresso martini was the COLDEST drink I’ve ever had made for me! Was so good! New favorite spot added to my list.

Went here for happy hour and the value for the small plates was incredible. Their hamachi was better than what I have had at Nobu. We appreciated that they had a good selection of non-alcoholic cocktails and beers. The bar was beautiful and the service was excellent. I loved the art. I was hoping for a more beautiful bathroom but you can't have everything. Our bartender was knowledgeable about the menu, made great recommendations and was attentive. Overall I loved it and would love the opportunity to visit again.

Having a particular diet (pescatarian), this restaurant was a great option. The food was phenomenal and plated very nicely, ordered the King Salmon. I ordered a drink called the "Momma Bear", it was delicious, I highly recommend it! The atmosphere was very chill and our waiter was great. I give it a 10/10 👍🏽

From the atmosphere to the food and, of course, my server Samantha, everything was amazing. Highly recommend. The Mama Bear cocktail is to die for. And the scallops were delicious. A great place to dine. Super intimate, and super adorable with the oceanic theme.

An upscale yet relaxed atmosphere greet you upon arrival. The food is meticulously prepared, fresh and delicious. The cocktails were also excptional and nicely crafted. We had fresh lobster and salmon tartare which were oth exceedingly fresh and well prepared. We also had seabass cioppino which was exceptionally good with well-developed flavors and a large piece of wonderfully seared sea bass. Though expensive, the food was well worth every penny. I wish I lived in DEtroit to take advantage of this great tmosphere, delightful ambiance and delicious foodl

The highlight of the evening was the cute lobster stick on the cocktail 🤷🏽‍♀️ Oysters, tuna tartare, and octopus were all good but not amazing. Server didn’t seem too knowledgeable. Overall somewhat of a forgettable experience.

Delicious! Its like a coastal seafood restaurant was dropped into Detroit. We went for Saturday night dinner, we have been trying to venture out vs repeating our favorite restaurants and Ostrea did not disappoint. Every plate was not only beautiful but tasty. We had a seafood chowder packed with scallops and sausage. A lobster roll just for comparison to the east coast, good portion of lobster vs all bread. But what took it over the top was the Chilean Sea Bass with mussels. The fish was so light and flaky, it reminded me of fresh fish in Hawaii. The waiter explained that they buy fresh and the owner's sourcing method. The bread, drinks, everything was good. I will note, it's downtown Detroit so like all restaurants, parking is either on the street if you're lucky, or one of the paid lots but that's normal. We'll definitely return.

Yelp
Exquisite seafood restaurant that has amazing seafood - I got all of their fish dishes like the ahi tuna, salmon and sea bass, because I was hungry and they have smaller portions, and all of them were incredible. They also have a very nice seafood chowder soup. As for dessert, their mango cheesecake (served in a small cylinder) is excellent. As is their cannoli served in the form of wafers. I also got a coffee with honey and cream. Exceptional service from a server named Nadine. Extremely cool interior decor and style with an underwater explorer theme. Also from the same owners as London Chop House next door. Definitely worth checking out if you are in Downtown Detroit!

Yelp
Ostrea has such a charming vibe--the space is cute and stylish, and the staff were wonderful from the moment we arrived. The valet bellman even walked me right to the restaurant and shared that "Ostrea" is Latin for oyster, which was such a welcoming and personal touch. Unfortunately, the food itself really missed the mark. We ordered a dozen Pink Moon Oysters (from Prince Edward Island), the Grilled and Chilled Spanish Octopus, Chilean Sea Bass Cioppino, Seared Scallops, and Ahi Tuna Tartare. While everything was presented nicely, the portions were very small and the dishes just didn't carry the depth of flavor I was hoping for. With the way the menu and atmosphere are set up, I was expecting something more memorable. I really wanted to love it, but overall it felt more style than substance. I'd go back for drinks or maybe a light bite in that pretty setting, but for a full dinner, it's not somewhere I'd rush back to.

Yelp
Mixed experience: Positive: oysters and shrimp cocktail were on point. Great taste and fresh. Good cocktails. Neutral: Burrata and salmon tartar were ok. Wanted the salmon to have more flavor. Appreciate a good ceviche. Negative: Crab tempura was bready. Tempura was not light and crispy. Texture of the apples against crab did not work for me. Finally, Price to portion size. Spent 70 plus dollars, around 90 after tip. I was still hungry and ate elsewhere afterwards. Other higherend seafood places in Metro Detroit offer larger portion sizes.

Yelp
The service was great but the food the oysters came with lemons of course but one lemon had hair on it. Strike one, the oysters were so good though. I did inform the waiter that my lemon had hair on it . So he brought more lemons. Next the food comes my salad had hair on it. Now that was strike three. The salad was tasty and delicious. But I will not be returning the food is very creative and delicious but the place needs a real cleaning the booths the windows the chairs and the food having hair in it was the end for me. The place has potential to be great but it definitely needs to be cleaned. Hair should not be in food. Great drinks Great food but cleanliness is not good. That's why 2 stars!

Yelp
Food was so-so. Oysters were very small and expensive. Most of the plates had too much grease or oil. Service was fine but not extremely welcoming. Ambiance was nice. Most likely will not return.

Yelp
Pretty expensive for the sizes... it was good just not quite worth the price imo. 5/5 atmosphere, 4/5 food, 3/5 price. Overall would give 3.5

Yelp
We were very very pleased with the food, service, and ambience. . We will most certainly be back

Yelp
The ambience was nice, our server was wonderful, the food was ok. The main challenge I had was the serving sizes. If you are looking for a hearty midwestern plate of food. Don't come here. Small a la carte style plates that have you constantly ordering more food, the menu was hard to understand, the wine selection was not very good, craft beers only. Less than 1 hour later, I was in the bathroom with a violent bout of diarrhea. Don't order a dirty martini. The bartender has no clue how to make them. Forgot the olive juice, no blue cheese olives, and the olives I did receive were old.

Yelp
Very good dinner, amazing service, beautiful restaurant. Had the Oysters, octopus, and scallops, all were amazing.

Kristen M.

Yelp
As has already been written, the portion sizes were very small. I will say that the prices reflected the portions $30 ish versus $50 ish. The menu is limited with the only real appetizer being oysters. It was also very loud. We did enjoy our waitress and there was a nice selection of wine.
