"A charming kappo on the banks of the Takase River. The chef’s aim is to create a restaurant that he himself would frequent, so let’s peruse the menu and gauge his tastes. His strong points are the inventiveness and patience he pours into his creations, such as salad dressed with heshiko (mackerel pickled in rice-bran paste). A native of Toyama, the chef serves seafood from Toyama Bay. Items such as firefly squid, glass shrimp and buri arrive in season. And don’t forget the regional sakes." - Michelin Inspector

Very nice restaurant with nice Japanese vibe and interior. Food is more for tasting, portions are small but tasty. Service is very nice. Menu is in Japanese but employees talk in English. Recommend to try this place.

Very nice, relatively affordable kaiseki meal. Staff is kind and attentive. Get a seat at the counter if you can, so you can watch the chef work.

We love this place! We had dinner here for Sonia’s 50th birthday and it was the perfect for a special occasion. The service was impeccable and the waitress explained every course to us in. Sonia speaks a little Japanese, but the waitress spoke English well. We had both the fish and wagyu beef set menus. Each course was so well presented, delicious and got better and better. Thank you, this was best meal we had while travelling to Japan and we had lots of great food!

Easily one of the most delicious, fresh meals we've had in our entire lives. We left blown away at Otaya's attention to detail and kindness, so we booked a reservation for the very next night. Incredible!

Absolutely not worth the money. Way overpriced. We wanted to end our japan vacation with something special so we choose this restaurant as we saw all the great reviews here and on tabelog, but we can unfortunately only recommend not going here at all. The food was ok and the ingredients partially interesting and generally high quality but for the category and the price the taste, presentation, texture and combination can only be described as disappointing and boring. You can get the same and a better experience at a third of the price in other omakase restaurants. Feels pretty close to the first scam we have experienced in Japan.

We were late for 30 minutes, the owner was very kind and our table still available. Total 9 dishes all very delicious and tasty. The dessert was also excellent. We had a pleasant night. Highly recommend to those who wants to try a real Kyoto omakase.

Outstanding from top to bottom, clearly a culinary experience to be savored and that will be remembered. I had the omakase and two others had a la carte and we shared everything. The best dining experience I have had.
