Had a lovely time at Otium Cellars with a group of great friends and colleagues. The setting is beautiful, the service is lovely and the food was delicious. Definitely a super venue for events or just to stop by and enjoy an afternoon or evening. Will be back!

Awesome place to hang out... wine and food are quality, and several spaces make it private at times. Live music gave it a great environment to just have a great time. Views are beautiful, staff super caring and kids and dog friendly.

My visit to Otium Cellars at Purcellville was nothing short of delightful. From the moment I stepped onto the property, I was greeted with warmth and a sense of tranquility that truly matched its address. First off, let's talk about the culinary offerings. The lobster roll they serve is a culinary masterpiece. Succulent, tender lobster meat cradled in a perfectly toasted bun – it was a taste of seaside bliss in the heart of Virginia wine country. Now, onto the wines – where do I even begin? The rose wine at Otium Cellars is not just good, it's exceptional. Its delicate blush color and refreshing taste make it the perfect companion for a sunny afternoon on the winery's picturesque grounds. But the real star of the show for me was the blaufränkisch. This wine is a rare gem, boasting Australian and German varieties that are seldom found on the East Coast. Its complex flavors and smooth finish had me reaching for another glass before I even finished the first. And let's not forget about the grüner veltliner – a personal favorite of mine when it comes to white wines. Otium Cellars' grüner veltliner is everything I love about this varietal and more. Crisp, aromatic, and bursting with notes of citrus and green apple – it's a true testament to the winery's dedication to quality and craftsmanship. Overall, my experience at Otium Cellars was nothing short of exceptional. From the delectable cuisine to the outstanding wine selection, it's clear that this winery is a hidden gem in Virginia's wine country. I can't wait to return and indulge in their offerings once again. Cheers to Otium Cellars for an unforgettable experience!

The wines and the view were amazing! The house cat paid us a visit on the patio and was so friendly.

Google
A lovely winery featuring established German wines, which is rare in Virginia. Scenic views of surrounding hills and vineyards and a variety of seating both indoors and outdoors on the expansive patio with fire pits for cooler weather. The winery is family friendly and dogs are allowed outside on the patio. There are two friendly winery cats in residence who will come up for scritches and attention: We tried the German/Austrian wine tasting and the chocolate wine pairing featuring chocolates by The Conche in Leesburg. I must say, the German wines are outstanding - the Gruner Veltliner is juicy and crisp but not too sweet perfect with the strawberry and black pepper white chocolate. Similarly, the Blaufrankisch with its cherry notes and soft tannins paired beautifully with the cherry and pistachio filled chocolate. We also enjoyed the soft pretzel twist that comes with a delicious mustard dip that has a good horseradish kick to it. They also serve pizza and other food which we didn’t try.

This is the closest winery to our house and we appreciate that they are one of the few that serves food and is open in the evening (only on Fridays). Unfortunately the staff seems unable to handle private events and regular customers at the same time. On two recent visits they stopped serving pizzas and even disappeared from the bar (and did not respond to the bell as posted).

Our experience at Otium Cellars was through the VRBO property, which I highly recommend. The atmosphere here is so relaxing and the property is just lovely. The red flight is a great place to start. I particularly enjoyed the Cuvee, Malbec, and the Cabernet. The staff was very accommodating, building us a roaring fire on a beautiful fall evening. The three meals chef prepared were outstanding and plentiful. I plan to go back for the chicken and waffles, which I didn't get to try this time. This is a unique property.

Otium Cellars is a wonderful place to visit. The staff is friendly and helpful, and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. It's great for both family gatherings and parties, offering excellent wine and food. The scenic views and tranquil setting make it perfect for relaxing. The wine selection is impressive, and the tasting experience is enhanced by knowledgeable staff. Overall, it is highly recommended for anyone looking to enjoy quality wine, beautiful surroundings, and great service. Don't miss out on this gem.

Yelp
My friends and I ended up here on a Saturday evening to kill some time before another event. We got a bottle of wine and a pizza to share. The wine, a Gruner veltliner, was great. However, the bottle that the server brought to us was warm room temperature (this is awhile wine that is meant to be served chilled). We then asked for an ice bucket or some kind of cooler, and she brought a chilling bucket that not frozen and just dripping water everywhere. Then to excuse herself, she tried to tell us that the winemaker does not serve that wine chilled. There's just no way that that is true - no winemaker who can make a white wine as high quality as that one believes it should be served warm. So we were absolutely unimpressed with the staff and the server. However, the loft is very cozy and we had it all to ourselves. The pizza was also very good and as mentioned, we live over the wine once we finally got it chilled a little bit. But I doubt we'll be back anytime soon.

Yelp
The best part about Otium is that they are very dog friendly. Pups are allowed inside the tasting room, which is nice now that the weather is getting colder. I was disappointed with the wines. I usually like gruner veltliner, but there's was a bit metallic. The rose was decent and the Pinot Gris was drinkable but unremarkable. The reds were definitely better than the whites. The Blaufränkisch was interesting and a grape I'm not familiar with. The Malbec was okay but had a bit of a strange finish. We went with the safe choice of the Cabernet Sauvignon. Our bartender was super friendly and let us taste a bunch of the wines. The food options were limited. We got the onion dip and didn't like it at all.

Yelp
We sat outside and the vibe was just gorgeous -- peaceful, rustic scenes. Our view was the rows of vines, a cool sculpture art piece, and rolling hills with cows and deer grazing. The Figgy pizza was incredible -- nice thin crust, fig, chorizo, bacon, spinach... it was delicious. The chicken wings were well seasoned and tasty with a fresh mango salsa. And of course the wine (a gruner and rose) were great too!

Yelp
One of the worst experiences I have ever had at a vineyard/ winery. I really wanted to try this place since they billed themselves as a German style winery. Too bad we never got to actually find out. We walked into an empty table area with a small bar in the corner. There were three servers milling about and one serving a couple at the bar. No one greeted us, and they seemed to to do their best to ignore us as much as possible. After standing at the bar for a few minutes, we asked if this was where we should order any tastings or food. One server grunted a yes response. Then we asked if we could see a menu, and were rudely told to use the QR code on the tables. Great- if there was actually cell service. It was abundantly clear at this point that we were not welcome here, and left without a second thought. Do yourself a favor and don't waste your time here, there are many better wineries and vineyards to go to in the area.

Yelp
I visited Otium Cellars with a group of girlfriends and my 17 month old daughter this past Sunday. The winery itself is gorgeous!! I could only imagine it on a sunny, vibrant, Summer day. I ordered the red flight and enjoyed every second of it. Their wine selection is really really good. However, the menu is a bit lackluster. There isn't much to choose from and not many vegan options but if you choose to get anything, go for the pretzel and mustard!! It's amazing. The customer service is just okay.. nothing major or special, the staff did their job and that's it. I'll take it. I will say it can be kid friendly if you're able to sit outside. During the colder months, the inside has fire places that a tiny person can't really reach, but one of the staff members were really on edge with phrases like "not on my watch" even with me standing WITH my daughter and holding her hands to watch the flame. There is a loft and also a bigger back area of the winery with more seating and another bar area. It's really nice and I plan to come back in the warmer months to enjoy the view and good wine.

Yelp
The new (ish) owners have done a lot and made this a great place to relax and enjoy the food and wines. We sampled a flight of reds and the rose. We enjoyed all of them but the Malbec and the Blaufrankisch Reserve really stood out from the tasting and the rose was fantastic. We went home as wine club members and bottles of all three of those. The pizzas were also really good - the Figgie pizza was not only amazing it's really unique and a must order. One of the other notable things was how nice all of the staff and owners are. Look forward to returning.

Yelp
Otium Cellars is a little winery nestled in Purcelville. The grounds looked large and beautiful... we even got to sip our wine in the sun next to the vines which was surely a delight. Currently, they are offering two wine flights (no changes/swapping unfortunately) to glasses to bottles. Wines were okay but I do believe they changed management in the last few years so I am curious to see what they may taste like in a few years. Even though we came on a weekend, it did not get very busy which is good for social distancing and feeling a sense of calm while enjoying your wine.

Yelp
Well, about all I can say is "we got out of the house & took a drive." Fall colors were drab and disappointing, but still better than the wines, which were remarkable only for their mediocrity. (We picked this place because our friend had been here with his German wine group & liked it.) 3 (stingy) flights + 2 appetizers , tax & tip = $110+ (*avoid* the "charcuterie" board: it's basically 1 slice of prosciutto, 2 slices of pepperoni, a warm pretzel & some mustards.) The food took so long we'd finished our flights before it ever showed up, and nobody who visited our table was the least bit interested In bringing us anything else. The patio was (as you'd expect on a beautiful autumn day) busy, and we ended up seated *much* too close to the "singer" & his speakers. But we got outside on a beautiful day.

Yelp
Otium Cellars is a gorgeous little winery in the Loudoun County countryside. The tasting room is beautiful, lots of hard woods. The theme here is German influence on wine making. We tasted everything available - starting with the whites and then progressing through the Reds. My favorite wine was the Malbec Reserve. #OtiumCellars

Yelp
As I write this review, I am wondering if this was just a fluke experience because others have had a good experience here. Unfortunately for us, we were not part of the cool kids on this visit. My friend and I had just left Bluemont and decided to stop here next on our winery hopping day after seeing that the winery was listed on a list of the top wineries in the area. I will admit that the ability to BYOF (bring our own food) was extremely attractive. We walked into the tasting room and walked up to the counter and were greeted by a young lady who at first just stared at us. Then she asked if she could help us and I advised her we were there to do a tasting. She retrieved glasses for us and slid two tasting menus in front of us . Their tasting glasses are huge so imagine my surprise when she poured the first wine and it was like a swig in a glass, not even a full pour. I was surprised that the bottles did not have pour tops on them so our "taste" was subject to poor. I swear it was the smallest taste that has ever been poured. Unfortunately no one else around us was doing a tasting so there was nothing to compare the pours to. Needless to say, I do not think the pours were adequate for a tasting. There was just barely anything to really taste, so it was a disappointing. We both opted for a glass of what we could tel was the best option, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris, and headed outside to find a table to sit out. It was a nice day outside so the weather was perfect. There is plenty of seating both inside and outside as well as a stand alone gazebo that you can sit in as well. Tables we clean and spaced out enough to where you had some privacy between you and the other tables around you. You can take in some views although the location is not as picturesque as some other vineyards I have been too. It was a nice touch that a young lady did come by to check on us and see if we needed anything. I cannot say that I would come back here, nor recommend this winery to others. I just did not get that warm and fuzzy feeling.

Yelp
They have absolutely no sweet wines. Don't go hungry because there is no edible food. Sat outside and not a single staff member in site. Went inside and the orange hair girl talks with her eyes closed and another girl in the corner on her phone. Zero customer service for the price they charge. There are better wineries in the area that will appreciate customers with way better customer service.

Yelp
Fabulous, fabulous fabulous! Very clean, very comfortable, very gorgeous wood structure, just absolutely a lovely dream of a winery with beautiful views! The service was phenomenal, prompt, kind, patient with our trying to place an order for four people! The pizzas were yummy and an absolute must! Very filling, and a great accompaniment to the wine! We love the wine so much we left with six bottles! We will definitely be going there again! Thank you!

Jennifer B.

Yelp
I like this German themed place. There's plenty of room inside or out to sit and enjoy some wines. We had 2 of the tastings and liked both. Also bought some bottles to go. We didn't have time to stay, but they have a large selection of snacks and German foods.

BritChantell T.

Yelp
My husbands brother-n-law brought us here for a wine tasting in November 2017. After 30-45 minutes on the grounds we decided that is where we wanted to be married. We got married here on September 2018. It was absolutely perfect!! Chelsea worked with us to make our day perfect. All we needed to decorate were the flowers and that was just because I choose to. No decorations are needed The only negative was the bridal suite/Airbnb wasn't as clean as expected. However, it is a beautiful space and my bridal party did some quick cleaning to make it more cozy. Over all, this is gorgeous property and the wine is fantastic. If you want a simple elegant wedding this is the place for you. I want to thank Chelsea and James for helping make the wedding process so much easier!

Yelp
There are many wineries within a short distance from my sister's house. We had finished at Sunset Hills and yelped other wineries that were still open past 5:00pm. It was early Spring and the wineries were not too crowded. Otium had good reviews so we drove over! They located past Franklin Park and you have to drive down some in paved roads. There was ample parking since it was late in the day. The tasting room had a small tasting bar. Since there was four of us we had a chance to squeeze in with other tasters. Some of us like reds and some only like whites. We split a couple of tastings. The staff was friendly but he was serving a few parties so it was hard to get detailed information on each wine. The wines were good but nothing memorable. They sell a nice variety of snacks: nuts, cheese, crackers and meats! We picked up a little of everything. He told us about the live entertainment so we headed over to catch some late afternoon music. Seating was available at the other venue. It's has a huge fireplace and a great place to listen to music, enjoy a glass of wine and munch on snacks.

Yelp
Decent winery not far from Leesburg VA. While this wasn't my favorite place during my little wine tour in the area, this place still stood out for its solid offerings and cozy tasting areas. The main tasting room has a nice counter area where you can sample their various vintages for $10. We went tried 8 different red and white varieties and walked out with two bottles of our favorite wines. Personally I was a fan of their latest Pinot Gris .. it has a great aroma and a wonderfully light finish. Aside from the main tasting room, there was also a little separate area with cozy chairs and sofas. A lot of people bought bottles and enjoyed their wine there, which has a nice little view of the surrounding area and some live music as well. This place is a little out of the way compared to some of the other wineries in the Leesburg area and is practically in a town that's not far from the VA/WVA border. But if you're in the area and want to check out a surprisingly pleasant little winery with friendly people, you can't go wrong by stopping by at Otium.

Laura B.

Yelp
Great friendly environment, great wine , overall great experience , family friendly . however the two times I've come here I wasn't able to order their food menu items to unavailable chef and unavailable items , just frustrating to plan to eat and then find out u can't , especially when your drinking wine

Matthew F.

Yelp
Otium is a very unique experience, even for someone who's been to lots of Virginia wineries. It feels very much like a piece of Germany relocated to Purcellville, down to a German style log cabin, several German style wines, German owner, even German sausages! Very scenic picnic area, adjacent to a horse farm (but don't touch the horses) and with a gorgeous and very dog friendly tasting room. While it's production is relatively small right now (15 acres of vines/2500 cases), Otium has tremendous aspirations. They intend to have up to 50 acres of vines, and are well on their way to be 100% estate. Until then, they get lots of grapes from elsewhere in VA, as well as Washington state. Most of their whites are estate, but a lot of their reds use a combination of VA and out of state grapes, and they also have 'guest wines' from Germany (when their German varietals run out). I was assisted by Sean, who explained the owner doesn't like to do anything that's easy. Given many of their grapes are very non-traditional for northern Virginia (Geuner Veltiner, Blaufankish, Dornfelder, all German varietals) at the expense of traditional VA grapes (Cab Franc, Petit Verdot, Viognier), I can see why he said that. He even tries growing Bordeaux varietals you don't see often in these parts, like Malbec and (not longer) a Pinot Noir. Whites: 2015 Geuner Veltiner; crisp, apple palate. This bottle was from Washington State, but their own grapes are on their way. Next year this should be 100% estate. 2014 Pinot Gris; very...different. Not sure how to describe it, except that I wasn't a fan. 2014 Chardonnay; steel fermented, but didn't enjoy it 2014 Chardonnay Reserve; little toasty, slight creamy finish; pretty good Reds: 2014 Blaufrankisch; German varietal very rarely seen. Nose and palate reminded me of liquorish. 2013 Merlot; Nice black cherry nose, little spicy. Mostly VA fruit but with some fruit from out of state 2013 Malbec; super spicy nose! It was like sniffing a pepper dispenser. Spicy finish as well, but not as bad as the nose. Also mix of VA and out of state fruit 2014 Dornfelder; surprisingly smooth and flavorful red, which I'd never tried before. Easily my favorite Don't forget snacks; they get meats from Lothar's Sausages, a German butcher in town. Loved the sweets too.

Yumi R.

Yelp
2.5 stars. This review is based on a visit in October 2019. (Does not reflect post-covid) Winemakers barely held our attention and just going through the motions and stuck to a procedure. We're not engaging or overly friendly , just rattled off some info. Didn't enjoy wines all that much; maybe it's because the whole experience kind of left a little bit of a sour taste in our mouth's, wines included... Unfortunately didn't like any wines enough to purchase a single bottle. The pros: lots of nice indoor space. Could be used as a party for sure. Outside there is a nice stone fire pit.

Lauren G.

Yelp
Great Cabernet and amazing pino. Cute farm house decor. They also host fun comedy nights and different events. I think this is the best wine I've had from a VA vineyard thus far! I am excited to come back. It was also open later than most vineyards which is a plus. It was a quieter vibe and out in the country where we watched the sunset. So peaceful! You can also bring your own food so we brought a ton of cheese! Recap: **BYOF: Can bring your own food **Amazing wine: both white + red **Relaxing atmosphere

Yelp
Otium Cellars has a lovely atmosphere in which to spend some time on a lazy Saturday afternoon. I love the wood throughout the main tasting room. It resembled a log cabin and was just, in one word, cozy. I will say though, I wish the tasting bar had been slightly lower. As a 5 foot 1 shortie, I had to stand on my toes to reach the bar comfortably. Also, driving up to Otium Cellars, it is a very narrow road, so be sure to proceed with caution and take your turn. Also, on a logistical note, it is pet-friendly inside the tasting room so if that is not your cup of tea, you may want to rethink a visit here. We were immediately greeted and given a brief introduction on Otium and that they are known for their red wines. After completing the full sampling, I would say the reds were far superior to any of the white wines we tasted. A tasting is $10 per person and includes 8 wines. The Gruner Vehliner had a crisp, citrus flavor with hints of apple. I preferred the Gruner Vehliner to the Pinot Gris, which also had fruit notes but was more bitter and not a favorite of mine. The Chardonnay was steel-fermented and had a slight hint of honey. I didn't care much for that wine either. The Chardonnay Reserve had a very buttery, creamy taste, and was probably my favorite of the whites. The Blaufrunkisch was my favorite red wine. It had a strong peppery taste that was balanced out with subtle cherry notes. The merlot was less peppery and was full of rich plum flavors with subtle hints of black cherry. The Malbec, which was my next favorite red, had layers of both blackberry and plum with more subtle pepper spices mixed in. The Dornfelder was a nice way to end the tasting. It was quite smooth and had lots of fruit flavorings, including plum, cherry, and blackberry. While we didn't decide on anything to have beyond the tasting, I would absolutely return in the future to relax and enjoy a full glass, most likely the Blaufrunkisch.

Yelp
I first came to Otium Cellars about 2 years ago and was struck by the great service, fantastic wine and really cozy place! The whole ambience is a wood cabin and there are plenty of nooks and crannies to hang out and enjoy a glass of wine. They have snacks such as cheese and meats, but they also allow you to bring in outside food if you want. I did a flight which included 8 wines (3 white and 5 red). That's a pretty fantastic deal for decent sized tastings. Every single wine that I tried was amazing and I would be happy with a glass of anything that I bought there. Their reds were especially tasty and unique. I'm a German wine convert for sure after trying this winery!

Yelp
What a lovely winery! I recently saw Otium on NBC's list of Top 5 VA wineries (http://www.nbcwashington.com/blogs/worth-the-trip/Top-5-Virginia-Wineries--305273011.html) and knew I had to stop in for a visit with my usual wine adventuring partners: my husband and our best friends. We stopped in on an abnormally scorching July Saturday and were immediately taken with the view coming just around the bend right before turning into the property. We also noted they have a huge screened in area with couches and a giant fireplace we will HAVE to re-visit in the fall when it's not melt-your-face-off-hot outside. After taking pictures with their bear greeter (seriously fun photo ops here, they also have a huge metal rooster overlooking the vines) we ventured inside to the small tasting bar. I was initially surprised to see several limos in the parking lot and not feel cramped inside, but upon looking for the restroom I realized that's because they have a huge second tasting bar with long communal tables just down the hall for large groups. Smart! We were offered the option of being seated for our tasting and really felt like the staff catered to us from start to finish. Absolutely fantastic customer service! I know very little (ok fine, basically nothing) about German wine so it was really exciting to hear about all the different grapes and blends they make on site. They are also one of the very few (maybe only?) VA wineries to have a Pinot Noir in their collection, so that was excited to see also. Sadly, they sold out while we were there-but it was really good, so I can see why! I was most impressed with their signature wine- the Blaufränkisch and also absolutely loved their sparkling Riesling. They have various meats and cheeses, spreads, flatbread and brownies available for sale, but also allow picnics (inside and everything!). Otium is also dog friendly and sits on a working equestrian facility, so there is a lot going on all at once. It is well worth the trip and while I may not agree with the rest of the list, I do agree with NBC on this one, it is definitely one of VA's best wineries!

Yelp
Love this place, great views and lovely German wine varietals. The people that work here and the owners are great. ALSO, last weekend was the first time we tried their weekend special food menu--it was phenomenal. Honestly it was some of the best food I've had in the area. The menu changes frequently, which I like, and I have full confidence that whatever their chef come up with on their special menus will be great. Those scallops and crab beignets were awesome. Compliments to the chef!

Yelp
I found this winery on a list of top wineries to visit in Virginia. I think I kind of understand the appeal: it's very scenic, there are horses, the wines are pretty decent, and the indoor tasting room and outside area are both nice. Those are the positive aspects. Now on to why I won't give it 5 stars. The customer service was lacking when my two friends and I visited. We walked in and there were three employees at the bar. No one greeted us. Ok. No big deal. One guy was pouring wine for 2 other customers. I don't know his multitasking abilities or his life. The other two looked busy, but I couldn't quite figure out what they were up to. We waited for an extended time and no one acknowledged our presence. I finally had to say something, stating that we would like to do a wine tasting. The younger woman asked for our ids, which we promptly got out and showed. We then waited for her to pour our wine. She disappeared (I thought to get our glasses) and came back to tell us that someone else was going to do our tasting. We then walked over and found a table while they shuffled staff to accommodate us. An older woman walked up to us, didn't greet us, and said, "IDs please:). I quickly told her that we had already shown them to the women at the bar. Ice stare. "I'm asking you." Oh. It's like that. We showed our ids a second time. Then began a strange wine tasting. She very rarely made eye contact, seemed uncomfortable the whole time, and almost always spilled a few drops when pouring our wine. All in all, I think there are enough wineries for me to visit in Virginia that this one won't be at the top of my list to revisit.

Yelp
Wonderful wines atmosphere with a little farm life. The merlot was warm with a bite of spice to it the Pinot is a bit sweet for me that's my taste it's very good. I enjoyed the warm tasting room cozy ness and we were allowed to bring in snacks of our own . No kids running around was nice adult time afternoon I think we might need to join their membership soon!

Laura H.

Yelp
This was my first winery on my first trip to Virginia wineries. As we were driving up, I couldn't help but look at how gorgeous it is. The only downside of going on a rainy winter day was that we could not enjoy all of the outside facilities. I really liked the space itself. Now as I mentioned before, it was a rainy December day which is (I presume) a very different experience then the summer or when the weather is nicer. It felt like a cozy little cabin and I liked that there were lots of different areas to sit. I really enjoyed doing the wine tasting. The mulled wine was absolutely delicious and what I got for after. If you want a snack, the spiced feta and crackers are perfect! I'm really happy that this was my first foray into the Loudon wineries as it was a really great introduction.

I was very pleased that we found this winery, the wines are wonderful they are based on the German wines which we found to be very very good the best way for me to explain how good their wines are is we left with 6 bottles and a membership. So if you love wine this a must stop on your next wine tour. Our wine ambassador Chris was a wealth of knowledge educating us on the wines. Make sure you stop in for a tasting you will be glad you did, wonderful place great atmosphere. We took a drive back Otium Cellars as we we had told a friend about their wines and wanted to try them out, he was excited about his experience and he loved the wines, their was live music, and the band was fantastic the whole experience was great. You need to try Otium Cellars for yourself.

Yelp
Great place for a wine tasting! Amazing prices. We had 4 white and 4 red wines in our tasting. There are plenty of areas to relax and the scenery is outstanding. My boyfriend and I will definitely be back!

Yelp
I visit a lot of wineries. Let's call it a hobby.... I like wine, and I would love to see the east coast come into its own when it comes to having a local wine industry. Otium is a good addition to the scene - however I can't tell you that is it is either five stores are two stars. I don't agree with either assessment. They make some reasonably good wines- but at an average of $30+ a bottle, I have trouble with the value prop. It seems to me that a number of wineries have changed their business model to primarily being a "retail wine restaurant" with pricing similar to what you would pay when your eating out. You never buy a case of wine from a restaurant.... They specialize in some of the Austrian varieties including Lemburger and Dornfelder grapes- but it is not true that they're the only ones here on the East Coast to do that. Anybody that's been to Stargazer out in the Coatsville pa area has been drinking those for years. And I would say comparable to better quality, at significantly lower cost. It's a beautiful tasting room and the grounds are scenic. I thought the Merlot and cab where two with their better offerings. What's the Pinot Gris in the Chardonnay were OK, but not at that price point. The blaufrankisch-(lemberger) was tasty, but not enough for me to part with $$. The Dornfelder it was sold out. I would recommend that it's certainly worth a stop -- I encourage folks to support local wineries - but that can be hard to do in significant quantity when you're asking some fairly high prices for only slightly better than average wine. Va La ( Avondale pa) can get away with it because of the extraordinary quality - these guys aren't there yet. The tastings are $10 apiece and they do not subtract that from your wine order.

Yelp
This winery is lovely and rustic. I don't think the scenery is as nice as some other wineries (in terms of breathtaking views), but the wine and service was truly wonderful. We visited last summer during July and ordered the tasting. The main tasting room, which looks like a log cabin, is nice, but we also enjoyed their additional tasting area, which features some seats and live music (when we visited). It's pretty quaint and rustic and evokes the scene of a farm, which is lovely. There are horses, too, which was nice :) It's definitely a great place to spend a Saturday afternoon.

Yelp
Generally a nice place to go and relax and the environment is usually great. Recent experience had a table full of grown adults completely tanked and dropping expletive after expletive. It was surprising management allowed this as they were aware but said and did nothing. Hopefully it was a one off experience but that kind of ruins the peaceful environment and why you go to a place like this in the first place.

Yelp
Oh, Otium. Akin to finding that last loaf of bread stuffed deep at the back of a grocery shelf, somehow visible only to your eye, harried shoppers rushing frantically around you in the hours before a snowstorm. Having spent so many years being treated like a naughty child at some of the larger wineries in the area (namely a few that have expanded greatly in recent years- their customer service unable to keep up with the number of grandeur tasting rooms and wedding venue buildings being built), Otium is a very refreshing find. If you expect gracious service and a delectable selection of wines, then give Otium a try. I promise you, you won't leave disappointed. I am not a white drinker. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy punishing myself on occasion, but the holy Mary hangover day after a night of partaking in white wine is not high on my list of must-haves. I will make an exception for Otium. Their whites are light, crisp, and sans the gallon of syrupy high-fructose corn assaulted mess that comprises many of the Virginia whites I've tasted. To my palate, they are well-balanced and refreshing. If you let me near a bottle of Dornfelder (a red, German varietal of wine exclusive to Otium), it will be gone within an hour. I shed a little tear when they told me they'd run out of it this season. Thankfully, they will be bottling the 2011 soon, so I have begun planning my leave from work in advance so that I might spend eight straight wine-besotted days and nights enjoying the new release. You'll usually find us there on a sunny weekend afternoon, or sometimes on a Friday evening as they awesomely stay open until 8pm to oblige their legions of local fans (read: fun drunken Purcellvillians). They're super canine-friendly, so bring along Fido if he's cool with getting poked and prodded and ogled by several dozen tipsy locals. The experience will make him a better guy, trust me, our two Jim Henson goldendoodles love it. They're in the midst of building a pretty outdoor gazebo/tasting bar, should be completed in time to enjoy the Fall tasting season.

Yelp
Pretty cool place. Stopped in on a Saturday afternoon and did a tasting. The tasting room is pretty nice inside and they have an awesome outdoor space with couches and stuff. Looks like you are sitting on a patio on South Beach, but its on a horse farm in VA. Wine is not your average VA wines, they have lots of German influence. The wines were pretty good though, bought a bottle to go.

Yelp
Duck Duck Goose! Well look no further than Otium Cellars for your wine adventures! Otium is small winery but it is full of character and FUN! When you drive up you see that it is not only a winery but also a horse farm... which great but its not like you get to ride them after a couple bottle of wine.. so put those dreams aside :) We had a group of about 8 people and we were here for b-day celebration. The staff were super nice and helpful even as more and more people came in. Tasting: The tasting was great, the wine were good, and the again the staff was friendly and very knowledgeable especially since Otium has many different German wines which one does not find else where. Those were very neat to try since I had never had of them before. So overall the tasting was great and tasting area is awesome very rustic and when the weather is nice they have an outdoor tasting area as well! The wine itself was good as well, nothing crazy and over the top but I am not a white wine person but their 2009 Pinot was great! Fun: After the tasting we bought a couple of bottles and decided to head over to their outdoor lounge area. First things first the lounge area is awesome! Its not just a couple wooden tables it is premium outdoor couches that are all covered and sit right next to the vines. Great place to sit, relax, sip on some wine and enjoy the outdoors without getting baked by the sun! The icing on the cake is that they also provide you with you games to play such as corn hole. Additionally on Saturdays, Otium also has live music which is great! The music the day we went to was on the bluegrass side but they did such an amazing job and were not overly loud. So not only do they offer a great view, great service, great wine, but add fun games and live music... I am hooked! So overall Otium is great place to come relax, have fun and just enjoy the VA landscape! I would def. come back and I am already thinking of when I can! So grab another bottle of wine and a bean bag the next game is on me!

Yelp
Service was meh. Service wasn't great and the wine tasting...how much cherry do you need. In almost every tasting. It was a beautiful venue and had some great acoustic entertainment. But we won't be back.

Yelp
I really enjoy Otium. We found it a few months ago and have already been back several times. The service has always been good and we really like Austrian/German style wines. There is plenty of seating both inside and outside. You can bring your own food if you like. They also have a small selection of items to choose from. They almost always have some type of warm brie and fresh bread. I like their wine club too. They weren't pushy about it at all which was a plus. We heard them talking to some other patrons and then asked about it. We ended up joining. I like it because I can buy the wine I like. We previously belonged to another wine club at another VA winery. It was a bummer because you didn't get to choose the wine in your shipment, you had to take their selections. A lot of times I wasn't a fan of said selections. At Otium you just purchase the minimum number required within the given time frame. You also get a free tasting or a free glass of wine at every visit. You should def. check it out!

Yelp
We had our wedding here last June. Tarah was amazing every step of the way. Their wine are wonderful and it's. Great overall atmosphere!

Yelp
Had a very good experience at Otium. The winery itself has a really nice inside and filled with interesting western-style art work. There is plenty of space to wander around as well, as there are as plenty of outdoor seats. The wine itself was also very good, I tried the Cabernet Sauvignon. I'm no wine expert, but it was a good red and didn't burn my insides like some reds seem to do. The staff was also attentive and accommodating. The most interesting part of this visit was learning the winery is set on a working farm. In my few hours there I saw lots of horses and goats. It made the experience even more memorable.

Yelp
Otium is a charming place. While the wines aren't always to my preference, they are decent enough. The views are pleasant, and the amenities are very good. In addition to standard seating and tables, there is a cabana-style outdoor building, with a fireplace and large windows all around which can be opened for a breeze. While none of these things alone make it a 4-star, but when put together, they make it live up to its name-Otium, Latin for leisure. You can easily spend a leisurely summer evening and leave refreshed and looking forward to another visit. I definitely recommend it.

Yelp
We have been to Otium many times before and we have raved about it. But this past time it was okay. Wine is palatable, but we couldn't find one worth buying a bottle. Offering a glass to pour the flights in would be a better touch as well. Drinking from the condiment cups wasn't a perk.

Yelp
Went to Otium Cellars to try the food prepared by their personal chef. Had the lobster roll and fried green tomatoes with crab. Paired with a white wines tasting it was an excellent evening. Highly recommend and can't wait to try something else.

Yelp
Prentious, had very few of their own wines. What they did have they decided to couple with two wines from their home countries as comparison. Only good point was the humorous server. Well ok another good point is the beautiful setting.

Yelp
I went today with my daughter and son. It was a beautiful day for a drive in the country and Otium was a great destination. Our server was very interesting and attentive. The wine was quite good and the views were beautiful. I try to go to a different winery every weekend and I really enjoyed this one
