The 24 Best Restaurants in Ottawa, Ontario, and Gatineau, Quebec | Eater

"Ottawa isn’t lacking for Montreal-style bagels thanks to Bagelshop. Since 1984, the shop has been turning out sesame seed-coated, rink-shaped dough, boiled in honey water, and finished in a wood oven. The bagels are similar to options at St-Viateur Bagel in Montreal, where the shop got its recipe, though Bagelshop does claim to offer the only wood-fired sourdough bagel in Canada, as well as tasty sandwiches and babka." - Joel Balsam

I recently enjoyed this steak and egg bagel, and overall, it was a truly satisfying experience. The bagel itself was fresh and had a great chew, providing an excellent base for the hearty fillings. The steak was tender and flavorful, cooked just right, and the egg was well-prepared, adding a comforting richness to each bite. The combination of ingredients was fantastic, making for a very tasty and filling meal. My only complaint, and it's a minor one, is regarding the placement of the items inside the bagel. I found that the ingredients weren't as evenly distributed as they could have been, leading to some bites being heavily weighted with one component while others felt a bit sparse. A more thoughtful layering of the steak, egg, and any other additions would really elevate this bagel from great to absolutely perfect. Despite this small issue, I would definitely recommend this steak and egg bagel. It's clear that the quality of ingredients is high, and the flavors are spot on. With a slight adjustment to assembly, this could easily be one of the best breakfast (or anytime!) bagels around!

Ottawa Bagelshop and Deli has three distinct areas within the store which includes a cafe, a bagel shop, and a deli counter. You can get any of the sandwiches they offer with the freshly baked bagels from the bagel shop. The bagel is Montreal style and you can see the baking process from the window. The bagel is delicious and you can buy a single, a half dozen, or a dozen pack to go. The cafe has many seating options available and it is really cozy with lots of drink options in addition to the sandwiches. The rest of the store sells various products made in Ottawa so it’s worth checking out as well.

Google
Got the roasted turkey and they use good quality, almost tasted homemade! Would definitely recommend, they have so many options it was hard to choose. I can’t wait to try one of their other sandwiches.

Google
You can choose your sandwich with different types of bagels they offer. We tried the everything bagel, which was fresh and tasty. The staff were nice, and the place was clean and quiet — a great spot to enjoy your morning.

Google
This is definitely a must try! Love their bagels and their different sandwich options. Service is great and also it didn't take too long to get our order. Great portions and good prices.

I came in with my family and had such a pleasant experience. The staff were kind and considerate, and the atmosphere was inviting and child-friendly. Yummy bagels as well!

Google
Hands down the best bagels we have ever tasted! After stopping by for breakfast, we were back the very next day to bring some home to Toronto. We will be back during each and every trip to Ottawa!

I was set on never coming back here after my last experience, but my partner enjoys it as it's been part of her weekend morning routine for the last 8 years, so I tagged along with her. After we left though, I was pleased to hear her say that she won't be back after today either. Excited to find a new breakfast spot and continue to recommend that people avoid this place. The food and staff leave a bad taste in your mouth.

Yelp
I stopped in for a drink on a hot summer day. I got the iced chai latte ($4.99) and asked to have it less sweet than usual. The man said that will be tricky because the chai mix is already sweetened, so he can put in less mix but the chai flavour would be less pronounced. I said I was ok with that. He was right, that my drink had a very subtle tea flavour, which I was expecting. Fortunately, I was happy with the level of sweetness of the drink. It wasn't overly sweet. It was also fairly rich and creamy. What I wasn't too thrilled about though, was the excessive amount of ice in the cup. Like half of the cup was ice :( The shop sells bagels, as per its name, as well as deli meets, desserts, some shelf stable goods, as well as a good selection of bulk Jelly Belly jelly beans, which are very popular with kids. They have some seating inside as well as outside in front of the shop. It'll update if I return to try their bagels, but I likely will not return for any iced drinks, since the cup is mostly ice. Street parking only.

Yelp
I have been going to this store for years for their Mennonite ham which is the bomb.. They undergone some renovation several years ago and halved their space and no longer carry prepared food which I sometimes get. I get the bagel here sometime and sometimes make my own sandwiches from stuff available since the menu is not as adventurous as I like. Recently I got bagel, Mennonite ham and brie de meaux and had a great customized sandwich!
google avatar

Jasmine L.

Yelp
Overall OK bagels! The flavour & texture wasn't to the standard of bagels I've had in Montreal, but still decent & fresh! I do like the menu selection for their bagel sandwiches though. We got their Lox bagel, wish it had more ingredients & oomph to be honest.

Yelp
To go order was amazing! Walked in to place the order, waited outside. Devoured when we got home. Bagel was tasty and crispy, the smoked salmon on my bagelman was delicious and tender. The Beirut breakfast was super flavorful and loved the tomato mix in the sandwich. Nice to find such a tasty bagel shop with Montreal style bagels right here in Ottawa.
google avatar

Selena Y.

Yelp
Tasty and fresh Montreal-style bagels. You can even watch as bagels are being baked in a large wood-fired oven, so you know if doesn't get fresher than that! I ordered the Bagelman's Choice, which included a bagel with lox, tomatoes, onions, and cream cheese in it, as well as a few potato chips, a pickle, and a small veggie side salad. The bagel was a delicious start to the day - the warm sesame bagel was crispy on the outside but soft and chewy on the inside, and the fillings were a great classic combination (anything with lox and cream cheese is a winner in my books!). I also thought it was reasonably priced at $10. In addition to the casual restaurant section, there's a small deli here to pick up a few groceries. Nice spot overall for a quick breakfast or brunch.

Yelp
Since moving to Westboro last spring, I've been hooked on their bagel sandwiches. Sooooo delicious and their house made fries are also so tasty and perfectly spiced (not greasy). They are located in Wellington West in a beautiful area with lots of local shops and businesses #supportlocal613 #wellingtonwest #westborovillage. My favourite is the BLT on an everything bagel with a side of fries and pickle spear!!
google avatar

Yelp
Visited on a Saturday morning a little after 10am. There was a small line up. I ordered the Bagelman's choice which is salmon cream cheese tomato and onions. The bagel is a little crunchier than I am use to but I guess that's the style. The smoked salmon was really good. I appreciated the tea pot so I could refill myself. Cute little breakfast place

John P.

Yelp
Ordered several takeout sandwiches, about $150 worth. No freshness and chew to the bagels. Bagels tasted day old. Not toasted. No butter. A real disappointment. Would not recommend this shop for takeout. Pickles were good, hence the one star.

Yelp
I love this place for their bagels. I make the trip here every once in a while for breakfast/brunch. It is a bit of a self serve. Their eating area is on the upper floor of the building. You walk up to the counter and place your order. As a tip...specify what type of bagel you would want otherwise they default to sesame. If you order coffee they give you an empty mug where you can go to the water/coffee station and fill up with one of the few types of coffee they have available. This means that the coffee is unlimited which is nice! After you place your order, they give you a number to bring with you where they find you at whatever table you're at and deliver your food. The sitting area is a decent size and also equipped to handle children by providing high chairs. You basically pick your own seats. If you have a large group, you're able to move tables and chairs around to accommodate. The staff has always been friendly and the food has always been great. This time however, I ordered the eggs Benedict Florentine and did not enjoy it as much. It was very bland as the hollandaise sauce was not well seasoned. I had to resort to applying a bit of ketchup for flavour. BUT I still do give this place a 4 star because their selling point is the bagels and their bagels have always been fresh and great. Skip the eggs Benedict and go with their classic breakfasts or sandwiches because those have been delicious. The price is pretty reasonable for a decent breakfast. I cannot comment on the deli market on the main floor as I have not been there to shop.

Yelp
Yum! Surprise!! Bagel breakfast for work!! These guys make the best bagels around, but you've got to get them early, and get them hot! It's treat day at the office, where there's nothing like seeing smiling faces! Incidentally, the Bagelshop also offers eat in dining, and a great but typical variety of deli dishes (yup! deli-tious!) The other half of the space is for grocery shopping. They offer a variety of smoked fish, different flavoured and plain cream cheese, other cheeses, chips and dips - all of it yummy. And yes - chopped liver, too! Just like Grandma used to make... And all the while, you can watch bagels being baked. I'm getting hungry just writing this!! I will definitely be back.
google avatar

Elen T.

Yelp
There are major renovations underway so my rating is not affected by some disorganization happening in the dining area. The bagel was really tasty, as that is the focus of the establishment. Not something I am used to is potato chips, coleslaw and a pickle as a side to the bagel, which in our case was breakfast accompanied by coffee. The coffee was very delicious and proper, I truly enjoyed my cup. I usually like milk in my coffee for taste, but this coffee was perfect without! As coming from out of town, will come back when Renos are complete and give it another try)

Yelp
If you love Montreal bagels and don't want to do a 2 hour trip, this is the pace to get your fix. Worth the detour every time.

Yelp
Great Montreal style bagels baked on site Very good flavoured cream cheese Nice setup Lots of variety for take out But a sit down restaurant as well We definitely enjoy the food every time we come Highly Recommended for bagels and Deli food

Yelp
I know it's been said before, but hands-down, best bagels in Ottawa. Fresh from the wood burning oven, this bagels are a work of art! Chewy, thin and not in the least bit bready!!! But this deli is not just bagels, is more of a neighbourhood groceteria. They have great cheese and baked goods counters, stock dried goods, novelty foods like jelly bellies (in bulk) and even have a decent selection of gifts and cards. The size of the place is a bit deceiving from the outside because the deli actually wraps around where you'll find a restaurant (eat-in or take out) serving bagel subs, salads, soups etc... Oh, also worth mentioning is the fact that they stock the delicious Art Is In breads!!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Highly recommend getting the sesame bagels straight from the oven. So yummy and chewy, and great to snack on while strolling around Westboro. The bagels are not sweet, and have a light flavor if anything. If you feel like splurging, they also have house made cream cheeses for just under $6.00 that looked amazing. Their restaurant/diner looked cozy and straight outta the 50's (love it). Would love to check it out sometime. The next day... The remaining bagels were so difficult to cut, and they would just break in half (and that was using the sharpest knife I own.) I ended up just sticking the pieces in the microwave and warming it up and eating it plain and on it own. It was softer after warmed up, and the everything bagel had great flavor. Not up to par with Kettlemans, but they still make a good bagel.

Yelp
I would never go here again if the bagels weren't good! One time for my lunch my friend and I stopped by the bagel shop and she got some french fries I did not have alot of cash on me so I decided not to get any food and I got a pop drink and sit with my friends and she also shared some of her food with me. In returned the rude manager came up to me and said please leave if you're not gonna get any food. I was in shock I stood there for a couple of seconds because I thought that the world was about to end when she told me that I had to leave. I even was signed up for her email program how dare she. Can I not sit with my friend and enjoy our shared lunch? We were sitting at a table for two is it like she's going to place a random stranger next to My friend it's not like I was taking up any more space because there were no tables for one I refuse to ever go there again but I can't give it zero stars and I decide to give it 1 because their bagels were and the food itself are fine .Experience 0/10.

Yelp
Great variety, and very high quality foodstuffs for sale. Our company always picks up a few dozen of their amazing, mouthwatering bagels for major breakfast meetings, baby showers, etc. Basically, we schedule meetings in such a way that they become breakfast events, so we can eat these bagels! One of my favourite experiences since moving to Ottawa was one rainy morning when I was the designated bagel-picker-upper from the Bagelshop. I was running a little late. After I ordered my bagels, I asked the lady behind the counter if she would mind calling me a cab. 'Sure"! she said, and threw her arms in the air, and exclaimed "You're a cab!!" - laughing at her own joke. It is a rare person who can make me laugh that early, and for the rest of the day!

Yelp
This place is so wonderful! I keep meaning to stop by to actually eat a meal here, but so far I just usually do a grab and go. The bagels are so delish and fresh - my second favourite next to Kettlemans. They have some great lunch options as well (everyone's mentioned the Bagelsubs!) as well as their fresh deli selections. They have a lot of speciality items and the staff are quite knowledgable. I think it might be a fun place to pick up a gift for a foodie or home chef! It's usually pretty busy, especially on weekends so be prepared to wait your turn.
google avatar

Alex H.

Yelp
I can't believe I've been missing out on this place! I stopped in on a Saturday afternoon after visiting several packed local cafes, looking for a place to grab a sandwich and coffee. The cafeteria style of this place is offset by its cozy seats (if you're lucky to nab one!), friendly staff, and delicious menu. We ordered a bagel with turkey, root beer, and cappuccino. Service was so fast! My partner had his sandwich before I returned from their bar with my capp! I only withhold a star for not having napkins at the table and more than a few tables needed a good wipedown. Aside from that, what a gem!

Yelp
I was taking a walk down Wellington one day and smelled fresh bread. I wasn't looking for anything to eat, but the smell made me hungry. I walked around for a bit, checking out all their different items. They offer tasty and healthy breakfast and lunch options. They have a deli section called "Bagelsubs" that sells subs and sandwiches with a ton of different fillings, including roasted lamb, grilled eggplant, or gourmet salmon spread, or plain fillings like cream cheese, butter, or even chocolate. In their shop, they sell specialty chocolates, some small kitchenware items, jams and jellies, sandwich meats, cheeses, and spreads, and, of course, bagels and other breads. I love that they sell Art-Is-In bread! I bought a loaf of olive bread, with a crusty outside and chewy inside. It didn't have an overpowering olive flavor, which was great because I used it as sandwich bread, with the brie and chicken liver spread I also bought from here. The spread was great. It came with caramelized onions on top and wasn't too salty. The prices are as just as you would expect from this kind of bakery/specialty food store, but completely affordable.

Yelp
A friend and I Googled "cream cheese and lox in Ottawa" and we were directed to this little gem tucked away in Wellington West. Not only is it a diner to suit your lunch time needs, it doubles as a market that sells gourmet snacks and condiments. So let's do the math here: a deli, a cafe, a bar, and a general food store rolled into one. Neat little joint! P.S. Best London Fog I've ever had!

Georganne B.

Yelp
Great bagels, great service. Delivery is a great addition. Love this place!

Yelp
This will be the first review I will have written while physically sitting in the premises of the establishment I'm reviewing. I'm feeling a little bit like a rebel, to be honest. I was running an errand in the area; I got hungry, so I decided to come in for breakfast. I still remember fondly the smoked salmon bagelsub the last time I was here, so I figured I would give their breakfast a try. For the $9.55 it costs for the original breakfast (after tax) I find it a little steep (if only because at other places you get sausages, bacon and ham instead of just one choice of meat). My meal basically came with two eggs, two sausages, two bagels, home fries, coffee/tea, and a cup of fruit + vegetables. Not bad, but considering its price and the fact that that's the cheapest breakfast option... The good news is it's not a bad breakfast (I've had worse). Between the home fries (which they cook in some fantastic kimchi-like sauce) and the bagel (made fresh - and it is just very good bagel), I wasn't That disappointed with my meal. I still think everything in the restaurant is overpriced, so maybe next time I'll just stick to buying all the ingredients and afterwards making my meal at home. As for the actual store, they have amazing homemade cream cheese here! Also lots of specialty food that you might not find elsewhere. It's a neat place; my only regret is not having come here as often for bagels when I lived all but a few blocks down.

Yelp
The shop portion of this place is lovely from what I have seen. I haven't really had a good mosey yet, but I was able to pick up blackcurrant jam - the European in me was jumping for joy. The cafe area is well organized, once you are familiar with it. Rather than having waiters taking peoples orders, you order at the counter and receive a number then proceed to a table of your choice where your order gets delivered when ready. The staff is not always very friendly, a lot of them seem impatient and fed-up. There are a lot of choices of toppings for your bagels and there is a selection of smaller items you can order on the side - sausage rolls, croissants, cake and pie slices.. The bagels are quite scrummy; the dough is on the sweeter side, but still works well as a savory "bagelsub. The price is a little high for something as simple as a bagel, but they are definitely tastier than your average grocery store brand. It's a nice casual place to have breakfast. I would probably rate higher if the staff were friendlier and maybe after exploring the shop area more as well.
google avatar

Nick M.

Yelp
We've been coming here for years. We live nowhere near the place but it has the best light roast coffee in town for sure. Saturday is quieter than Sunday but there is a definite 'crowd' both days. It is possible to sit quietly and read - they have a large comfy chair area with leather seats and sofas etc. - but equally you can join in the crowd and discuss whatever it is that is the topic of the day. The bagels are excellent and they have a very densely packed delicatessen area. They now get very good bread every day bar Sunday and the softest tastiest pita bread in the world! The food is good but on the pricey side (hence 4 stars not 5) but you can sit all day and not be pushed out. We love this place. You will too.
google avatar

Eric B.

Yelp
A great restaurant for breakfast/brunch with family (very forgiving to young children), this has become a regular spot for us. I think the food is actually getting better, too! The omelettes, bagels and pastries rival some much more expensive breakfast restaurants in town. Worth a visit!

Yelp
(Note: This review is primarily for their bagels). I've been going to the Ottawa BagelShop since the day they first opened as I used to live in the neighbourhood. My visits are a lot less frequent now but going for a hot and fresh bagel is still one of my favourite treats to have. Recently, some friends and I were in Montreal and we hit two famous Montreal bagel shops, St. Viateur and Fairmount, for a bagel taste test. Let's just say that if anyone says Ottawa doesn't have bagels as good as Montreal, they are lying. Since both the Ottawa Bagel Shop and St. Viateur use the same style as preparation (my friend used to work there and that's what he told me), if you were to do a blind taste test between the two you couldn't tell the difference. (I personally find Fairmount bagels taste different so you could probably tell the difference from them and the BagelShop). Now, while the BagelShop has expanded a lot in the last 20 years, I still really only go there for the bagels. And even for the bagels, I stick primarily to the sesame seed ones. Getting these right out of the oven is just sweet. Having a dozen of them in a paper bag that is a bit too hot to hold ensures that at least 2 of them will be eaten en route home leaving my car seat covered in sesame seeds, but it is worth it. I haven't had a bagelsub in years, nor have I bought any of their other store items in years so I don't know what has changed or what hasn't. From what I remember, the owner used to like to get a lot of higher end items in so you could find things here that you couldn't find elsewhere but at the same time, things used to be a bit pricey. Again, I don't know if that is how things are now or not. OTHER - WHEN TO GO The main tip here is that for the bagels at least is get them while they are hot. If they don't have any that are just out of the oven, then I'll just leave and come back another time. They cook the sesame seed bagels at times throughout the day so it doesn't happen often that I'll leave empty handed. (Note: I did go once recently and they were completely out of bagels which took me by surprise). OTHER - PARKING While Wellington can get a bit busy, there are enough side streets around that you should be able to find parking on. -- This is one of my staple places meaning I'll always go back. Admittedly that may only be a couple of times per year but it's a treat.
google avatar

Dave C.

Yelp
This is always a fun place to go for breakfast - awesome bagels......some of the best in ottawa i think. I go for the eggs benny on bagel with peameal bacon, super tasty - however i must admit the bagels are frick'n impossible to cut with a butter knife, you end up tearing the bagels up. A good steak knife would help :)
google avatar

Hintonburg R.

Yelp
Not too many places left where you can get chopped liver on a bagel. Service is unpretentious and a good selection of specialty groceries. Bagels are Montreal style and always fresh. Lots of different "bagelsub" sandwiches to choose from.
google avatar

Mo A.

Yelp
Perfect greasy spoon brunch with a delicious Bagel to boot. Highly recommend their bagel sandwiches.
google avatar

Taylor Z.

Yelp
Awesome food. Great atmosphere. Fast service. Best bagels I've ever had. 100% recommend.
google avatar

Amanda D.

Yelp
I definitely reccomend going in and taking whatever just came out of the fire! You cannot get any fresher than that! So chewy and yummy! Great bagels and a great place to pick up some cheese, spreads and other gourmet items. (and art is in bread!!!!) Definitely a must when you are in Westboro! Don't bother with the bagel sandwiches. Too expensive for what you get. The bagel is all you really want.

Justin T.

Yelp
I'd like to start by saying their bagels are great. This is about the "breakfast" I just ate. The eggs were burnt. The ham smelt sour, tasted off, which they figured they could cover by over cooking it to the point where it nearly became dust. The fruit salad look translucent, as really old pre cut fruit tends to do. They added baby spinach as a garnish but of course that was wilted a slimey. The only thing that was good was the bagel. Do not spend $10 on their breakfast, you will regret it.

Tim C.

Yelp
The bagels are great. I tried the breakfast once though and wasn't really impressed. Stick with the bagels.
google avatar

Ed W.

Yelp
The bagelshop bagels can compete with anything in Montreal, and hence anything in the world. They are really, really good. Further, they have many delicious sandwich offerings, and a nice lounge area to eat, have a coffee, read the paper, etc. There's also a little gourmet grocery thing going, with olive oils, cheeses, etc.
google avatar

Audra N.

Yelp
Love love love this place! It's part of my weekend morning ritual to go pick up six sesame bagels and some yummy onion & garlic cream cheese! A little pricey sometimes, but totally worth it!

R T.

Yelp
Good bagels, especially when they're warm. Need to eat them same day for the best experience. That's why they're just not the same at the grocery store in a bag.

Paul L.

Yelp
Bagels are great, store selection is excellent , but the restaurant section for breakfast is a bit overpriced. When one pays $10 to $12 for a breakfast which can be obtained at other establishments for approx. 1/3 less, it seems rather stingy to charge for a refill of coffee. Yes, the coffee is good, but at other establishments one gets refills at no extra charge, plus gets waited on as well.

Lise R.

Yelp
Simply the best bagels in Ottawa! I always buy their plain variety with either sesame seeds or poppy seeds 'cause I like to taste the toppings I add. The store also has a great variety of deli foodstuff and pastries. Everything I buy there is more than satisfactory!

Louise S.

Yelp
The best bagels! Love this place and all the wonderful things they sell. The staff is fantastic and very helpful. My Saturday wouldn't be complete without my trip to the Bagelshop.

Ava G.

Yelp
When I first moved to Ottawa it was about a week before Passover. I had no Matzah and no idea where to find it. Someone suggested the Bagelshop & Deli to me. I was thrilled to not only find everything I needed there but also to find amazing bagels and a fantastic corned beef sandwich! I go back regularly and usually bring friends with me every time. I could not recommend their food highly enough!

Anna P.

Yelp
good food and decent prices... food came quickly.. will def go back!

Larry S.

Yelp
Have visited many times; always an enjoyable experience. First time for brekkie this morning; pancakes for me & French toast for S. Well prepared, tho not as hot as should be. Excellent coffee, can't beat the price.
