Oude Werf Hotel | Best places to stay in Franschhoek

"The oldest, continually-running hotel in South Africa, the Oude Werf began life in 1686 as a church, before being converted into a hotel in 1802. Its 21st-century incarnation combines antique pieces with modern touches; exposed brick and vibrantly-patterned fabrics and furniture. Don’t miss afternoon tea in the eclectically-furnished (including numerous clocks) lounge; Oude Werf’s cheesecake is legendary, and it’s a great spot to people-watch after a morning exploring Stellenbosch. The hotel is located in the heart of town, with art galleries, wine emporiums, boutiques and restaurants all within easy strolling distance. The world-class vineyards of the wine region are all around and close by. Cape Town city centre and the picturesque coastline, however, are a 45-minute drive away. " - Richard Holmes

If anyone knows how to go beyond 100%, it’s the staff of this hotel. It may officially be a four-star, but with their care and attention it easily deserves a fifth. My husband had a cold when we arrived and was feeling really unwell – every single member of the team asked about his health. The next day, everyone we met from the staff again showed concern and asked how he was doing. Such genuine care is something we’ve never experienced before. The hotel itself is spotless, stylish and full of thoughtful details. Little touches like sweets with afternoon coffee or tea in the room, a proper turndown service in the evening, and their helpfulness in arranging day trips make all the difference. You truly feel at home here – the staff are so kind, attentive and warm-hearted. This is service and hospitality beyond expectations, something you would search a long time for in Europe. An unforgettable stay for us.

Outstanding hotel. Not part of a chain or particularly big but we will definitely return if we are back in Stellenbosch. Location is perfect, rooms are fantastic. Big, roomy, amazing bathroom, huge shower and nice balcony with a cracking view and we were in a cosy room!||Restaurant served a fantastic buffet breakfast on a long table with fresh fruit juices and then you could order a selection of dishes cooked to order. The eggs benedict was divine. We had dinner in the hotel which was delicious and very, very reasonable. All guests are offered a complimentary drink. The wine was delicious.||Staff were so helpful and interested in what we were going to be doing during the day. They organised a wine tasting day for me and they said we would like our guide, Rouan (Stellen Wine Adventures) How right they were. If ever in Stellenbosch you must use Rouan as he put so much thought into our tour and provided so much information without overloading us. Great recommendation from the hotel.||Overall, my wife and kids were so impressed with the hotel/staff and if money permits we will be back.

A very nice hotel in a good central location in Stellenbosch. Valet parking was seamless - arrived at hotel no porter took bags to our room and parked our car.|Nice lounge, nice pool area and nice restaurant facilities. |The room decor, location and furnishings were excellent with one fairly major issue - no bathroom door. It looked like there was meant to be a sliding door closing off the toilet but it was missing.

We stayed in Oude Werf during our honeymoon. We absolutely loved the hotel - it was stunning, with beautiful art throughout. The team could not have done enough for us. We were arriving late and Danine, who was easy to get in touch with via the Oude Werf WhatsApp, organised for us to have dinner after the kitchen had closed once we arrived. The food was incredible, both then and at breakfast, where it was made fresh to order. I also have coeliac disease and they could not have been more accommodating. Shout out also to Derek who was the nicest person to speak to and gave us so many helpful tips. 10/10 recommend staying here - we had the best time, thank you!!

A clean, modern room in a charming, historic building in Stellenbosch. Breakfast and meals were excellent, both delicious and generous in portions. The staff were incredibly attentive and truly focused on our well‑being. We had the best key lime pie we’ve ever tasted, every bite was unforgettable. Congrats to the pastry chef, whose work left a lasting impression.

This hotel is a beautiful historic building in the main street of Stellenbosch. Very central to shops and great restaurants. Our large room was at the back of the hotel so was very quiet. I think the room was an old horse stable tastefully renovated. The walls were very thick and the front door was split like a stable door. We had a wonderful luxurious time staying here. The people were friendly and efficient and nothing was too much trouble. The breakfast was enormous and delicious.|We could have stayed here a week.

Had Eggs Benedict for breakfast at Oude Werf Hotel, and it was top class. Perfect, fresh Hollandaise was served and the Salmon rolled into roses on the English muffin was the perfect thickness, texture and temperature. We had freshly squeezed orange juice to accompany it and it was great! Would definitely recommend. Our only regret is that we didn't do the full breakfast buffet as it looked absolutely amazing!
