Oude Werf Hotel | Best places to stay in Franschhoek

"The oldest, continually-running hotel in South Africa, the Oude Werf began life in 1686 as a church, before being converted into a hotel in 1802. Its 21st-century incarnation combines antique pieces with modern touches; exposed brick and vibrantly-patterned fabrics and furniture. Don’t miss afternoon tea in the eclectically-furnished (including numerous clocks) lounge; Oude Werf’s cheesecake is legendary, and it’s a great spot to people-watch after a morning exploring Stellenbosch. The hotel is located in the heart of town, with art galleries, wine emporiums, boutiques and restaurants all within easy strolling distance. The world-class vineyards of the wine region are all around and close by. Cape Town city centre and the picturesque coastline, however, are a 45-minute drive away. " - Richard Holmes

Had Eggs Benedict for breakfast at Oude Werf Hotel, and it was top class. Perfect, fresh Hollandaise was served and the Salmon rolled into roses on the English muffin was the perfect thickness, texture and temperature. We had freshly squeezed orange juice to accompany it and it was great! Would definitely recommend. Our only regret is that we didn't do the full breakfast buffet as it looked absolutely amazing!

Outstanding hotel. Not part of a chain or particularly big but we will definitely return if we are back in Stellenbosch. Location is perfect, rooms are fantastic. Big, roomy, amazing bathroom, huge shower and nice balcony with a cracking view and we were in a cosy room!||Restaurant served a fantastic buffet breakfast on a long table with fresh fruit juices and then you could order a selection of dishes cooked to order. The eggs benedict was divine. We had dinner in the hotel which was delicious and very, very reasonable. All guests are offered a complimentary drink. The wine was delicious.||Staff were so helpful and interested in what we were going to be doing during the day. They organised a wine tasting day for me and they said we would like our guide, Rouan (Stellen Wine Adventures) How right they were. If ever in Stellenbosch you must use Rouan as he put so much thought into our tour and provided so much information without overloading us. Great recommendation from the hotel.||Overall, my wife and kids were so impressed with the hotel/staff and if money permits we will be back.

We had an excellent stay. We booked a Whimsy Room which was very spacious and it had a very large bathroom with a shower and separate bath. The hotel was located centrally in Stellenbosch with a short walk to numerous cafes and restaurants. The hotel’s restaurant was excellent with a good selection of local cuisine. All the staff were all friendly and helpful, especially Leticia in the restaurant. The hotel also arranged transfers to Cape Town airport at a good price.

The staff here are all absolutely wonderful people. They couldn’t do enough for you. It was our ten year anniversary and we had a lovely bottle of wine in our room. Derek is so helpful for booking tours and organising excursions/restaurant bookings. Thank you so much for the amazing stay! The hotel is right in the heart of stellenbosch in a beautiful building. Room was spotless with great housekeeping services. Breakfast was fantastic. Highly recommend.

A clean, modern room in a charming, historic building in Stellenbosch. Breakfast and meals were excellent, both delicious and generous in portions. The staff were incredibly attentive and truly focused on our well‑being. We had the best key lime pie we’ve ever tasted, every bite was unforgettable. Congrats to the pastry chef, whose work left a lasting impression.

This hotel is a beautiful historic building in the main street of Stellenbosch. Very central to shops and great restaurants. Our large room was at the back of the hotel so was very quiet. I think the room was an old horse stable tastefully renovated. The walls were very thick and the front door was split like a stable door. We had a wonderful luxurious time staying here. The people were friendly and efficient and nothing was too much trouble. The breakfast was enormous and delicious.|We could have stayed here a week.

Unfortunately I did not have the best experience here; * Parking is a MASSIVE issue - not only is there far too little parking space available, the street in which the hotel is situated, is really crowded. * Cleanliness of the rooms are not as one would expect, see pictures (and the shower is smelly). * The hotel is dated, and not in a good/ historic way, more in a lack of keeping up the maintenance way (see the pictures of the floor and stairs as example, as well as the light - and therefore sound as well - coming in from the poorly insulated room door). For the price you pay, you would expect pristine conditions (everywhere), honest advertising (especially about the frustrating parking situation) and an up to date/ well maintained environment. Not recommended from me, sorry.

We've stayed at this hotel several times and once again, a great experience. The location can't be beat and the staff are very helpful and attentive. Great hotel. Breakfast was outstanding. We had an issues with a transportation provider and the hotel was so helpful in getting us on our way.
