The Best Restaurants, Bars, and Cafes in Portland’s Hawthorne District | Eater Portland

"This charming, independently owned patio cafe, tucked into a shady spot in Ladd’s Addition, specializes in sweets, breads, and rotating soups. Menu highlights include a swirly sour cream coffee cake flavored with espresso and topped with whole hazelnuts, as well as a peanut butter and jelly sandwich made on fresh white bread, which gets an extra boost of flavor from local butter and sea salt. Sip an entire pot of French press coffee, and check out the selection of boutique magazines in the back." - Katherine Chew Hamilton

14 Best Coffee Shops in Portland, OR | Condé Nast Traveler

"Oui Presse, on Hawthorne Boulevard down in Southeast Portland, is cheery and feminine, with lights strung around and the smell of freshly baked cookies emanating from the kitchen. On sunny days, the outdoor patio is especially inviting. The coffee here is perfectly adequate, but it won't impress coffee nerds—really, people are coming for the homey ambiance, the relative quiet, and the baked goods. Oh, and the amazing PB&J, which along with a hazelnut espresso coffee cake, comprises the very limited (but very delicious) food menu. You can also get a baguette or toast with butter and jam." - Hannah Wallace

Google
Good coffee and always something good to eat - more than pastries! They even have hard boiled eggs at the ready. The soups are really good and they sell quarts to take home. It can take some time to prepare the food - but that also means they’re using more than a microwave. And they get their baguettes from one of the best bakeries in portland!

Went in here a handful of months ago. The oatmeal was unique and a good treat for a rainy day. I tucked in here right before it started storming. The service was fine and the atmosphere was OK. Lots of shops nearby. It's worth a stop.

Google
Oui Presse coffee shop... best kept secret. Reminds me of how cafés were before Starbucks—real plates and cups. Thoughtful menu and service. Second visit. Consistent good service and lovely atmosphere. (I love the front window counter for brunch and writing.) Second time having the poached eggs on toast: thick-cut crusty whole-wheat bread with soft middle—a little mattress for the egg pillows 😁. Perfect poached eggs: cooked whites, yolks with a honey-like consistency. Balanced seasoning, plus finishing salt flakes. Lovely latte. A little loud once full, due to coffee machine sounds and voices. Great experience. Will go back for third visit.

Google
I like to try lots of different cafes, but I keep coming back here because of the food. It's always simple and hearty, and gives off major homemade, comforting vibes. I love all the soups I've tried so far, the cookies, and especially the beans on toast! Mixed beans in a slightly sweet tomato sauce piled onto THICK toast, drizzled with olive oil. So good!

Google
Excellent delicious French style food, fantastic coffee and chai. The seats are not the most comfortable, they lost one star there. I am a regular there and I haven't had one bad thing. Soup is great, the baguette with jam and butter or ham and butter is also great. Cakes are also fantastic. Kid friendly and always an interesting scene

Google
Their granola was good. I feel like I should say more than that. So many things are "good". People, days, poops, and definitely Oui Presse's granola. I'm pretty sure the poop I had after this granola was good too. Everything just pushed through so easily! I'd appreciate if more food reviewers talked about how their food affected their bowels. I'd think twice about a place's famous mac n cheese if it's going to be an ordeal on the toilet later. Anyway, I'd definitely go back to this place for the granola.

Google
Cute spot, love the plants outside and style inside. Had the poached eggs on toast - perfectly cooked eggs and the in-house bread was SO good! The coffee was good as well ☕️ 10/10 rec and will go back

Google
Very good service. Even though there were a lot people in line, the single person working (on Christmas day, thank you!) made sure to take all orders, and make them, as quickly as possible while also doing a great job at it. The PBJ was great, and so was the hot chocolate.

Yelp
Great little shop in SE - reasonable prices and nice ambiance. The staff was friendly and espresso was fresh and tasty!!

Yelp
Recommended this spot by our AirBnB host. Cappuccino was tasty - thick classic "old school" foam, not microfoam. The baguette and jam was a delight - super fresh, springy croissant with nice shattering crust, quality butter, delicious boysenberry jam. Big enough to share (if you're feeling generous).

Yelp
I've made it a goal to visit all the hip coffee shops while Im living in Portland. There are so many it took me over a year to get around to trying this. I will come back here for the delicious soup but it wont make it into my rotation due to the uncomfortable seating. ATMOSPHERE: when visiting coffee shops I usually ask the following questions: is the coffee good, is this a good environment for studying, will this place make a cute date spot? I wouldnt linger here because of how uncomfortable the chairs are. Not only are they hard metal but the sides dug painfully into my hips. Im an average sized woman (14/16) and had to perch at the edge of the chairs to sit at the table. CLEANLINESS: the tables were dirty. the bathroom was clean (but very cold!!). SERVICE: the barista wasnt particularly warm or friendly to me. I wouldnt describe my experience as bad, just not welcoming. Other customers came in and she was noticeably different with them. Maybe they were regulars? 2/5 FOOD: I got 2 espresso shots, hazelnut coffee cake, and the soup of the day. The coffee cake is mid. Go to Costello's Travel Cafe if you want bomb coffee cake. 2/5 The coffee was nice. 5/5 The soup of the day was borlotti bean with tomato and collards. This soup was actually quite delicious and redeemed this cafe. It came with a baguette and butter, which tasted high quality. 5/5 PRICE: prices are average. ACCESSIBILITY: the bathroom is not ADA compliant. It has a bar but cannot fit a wheelchair or walker. As the cafe is right on Hawthorne Im pretty sure there is a bus stop nearby. Lights werent too bright, and music was at a moderate volume. PARKING: I took a taxi here, but it looks like street parking is plentiful.

Yelp
Friendly personal service. Oui Presse promised and delivered the BEST chocolate chip cookie. And the beans and toast....yummm! Spacious. Great place to get work done on a rainy Saturday afternoon. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Iced Vanilla Latte with oat milk was good, ordered the baguette with butter and boysenberry jam and it was good, the only change I would suggest is to maybe limit the amount of butter that was put on. Other than that, the lady at the front was nice and got our drinks and snacks out quickly.

Yelp
This open airy shop is run by its owner with occasional helpers. The newsstand is small but well stocked. The tables inside are pleasant as are the ones on the extremely wide sidewalk outside in good weather. She makes excellent coffee drinks, as good as I have ever had. The limited menu depends on soup made fresh in house and bread baked and toasted here along with coffee cake available by the slice. The 40 minutes we were there had a steady stream of hungry customers, a couple of college students using the wifi and drinking coffee. The poached eggs on toast and coffee cake we had for breakfast were flavorful and well made, the crispy toast was fabulous. The soup we took home cold and heated in the microwave. Also excellent. Try Oui Presse. You will like it.

Yelp
Wow the use of real butter here is Devine. Elevates a good piece of bread to magic. Had the chocolate chip cookie right out of the oven. C'est magnificent. Had a hearty bowl of lentil soup, egg on toast-with a dollup of great butter; and breakfast sandwich. Great all around

Yelp
Super friendly staff and fantastic atmosphere! This place has a ton of potential and I'm eager to try it out sometime in the future. Stopped by here for a super quick tea (THEY HAVE PG TIPS!!!) and coffee cake to go. I was impressed by the menu and for sure need to try out a few more items on the menu. The coffee cake tasted a little off to me, not super sweet/too much baking power? I'm frustrated that I can't give more specific feedback. I'm wondering if this batch was a little bit wonky due to the crazy heat we've had the past couple days. So many people give the coffee cake high marks, so I'm more than willing to give this place another try! When I do, I'll gladly update this review! Worth a visit, maybe avoid the coffee cake on hot days?

Yelp
I'm a jam girl. Put jam on anything and I will eat it. The baguette with butter and jam at Oui Presse is *chef's kiss*. Beautiful flaky baguette topped with what can only be described as a slab of butter (in all the best ways). And not just any butter...Kerrygold pure Irish butter. Yum yum yum. AND THEN IT GETS BETTER because there's jam on top of that. I was given a choice of strawberry, Marionberry, and apricot- I wasn't feeling adventurous, so I stuck with strawberry. I am definitely going back for the others though. The order comes with two large slices, so you won't be left hungry. Enjoy in the cute cafe or on shady tables outside and pair it with a drink. PS- I also tried a bite of my friend's coffee cake and it was equally amazing- hot and fresh out of the oven. Truly you can't go wrong with food here!

Yelp
I really wanted to love this place but I was sadly disappointed. I ordered an iced matcha latte, the beans on toast + poached egg and the coffee cake. The matcha latte came hot at first- he did correct this and put it over ice but the matcha was all at the bottom and top was straight milk. Wasn't a great one. The beans on toast, being British, was calling my name but would have preferred to just have regular beans and not chickpeas. It was good and the bread was good, but not my ideal. The coffee cake sadly I never got to try because they said they were out and another was in the oven- I was sitting outside so asked to let me know when it was ready but they never did. The guy at the counter also took forever to make the drinks. I think if it takes that long, you should tell people to go sit down and it'll be brought to them. I waited in the line to order behind 1 single guy ordering a black coffee to go and a couple ordering some coffees and it took 15 minutes to get to the front of the line. Honestly the most surprising place especially given the name was the decor! It was so boring inside, the decor was some glass plates on the wall and some random DIY-looking decorations. Could be so cute so easily. In a nice area too, love having the outdoor seating.

Yelp
Excellent coffee made by excellent people. If you happen to stop by, check out their daily to go meals. If you see the ragu on that menu, get it!

Yelp
Good to return again to one of my favorite cafes, after 15 long months of hiding from covid. Treated myself to the PB&J Royale for lunch. Oh my. Ohhhh my. It was really good. Fresh PB. Oozing with strawberry jam. Hint of sea salt and sweet butter. All between a couple of thick slices of tasty bread perfectly textured. Perfect treat for a hot afternoon. Took a lovely seat outside, under the trees, and in the cool breeze. And slowly nibbled away at my sandwich, enjoying each bite.

Yelp
Hesitate to reveal this sweet secret of a gem place but here goes. Wonderful little spacious place to get a latte and fresh truly homemade (as in they make it right there in an oven) hazelnut espresso coffee cake. Or go for delightful rotation of breakfast/light lunch options like green minestrone with asparagus or bacon egg cheese sandwich. Friendly consistent barista man too. Never crowded on a Sunday morning....yet. Love it all - even the sparseness of the decor and complete non pretentiousness of the service and love of simple good fresh made food!
google avatar

Clare Q.

Yelp
Fun frenchy cafe! I love the atmosphere and the ability to buy french magazines (though spendy). I stopped in for a quick bite and had some very tasty homemade soup naturally accompanied by fresh baguette and butter. Barista was very friendly and the cafe itself was comfortable as a place to get a little work done or to visit with a friend. V Cute!
google avatar

Amy P.

Yelp
I had the baguette with jelly and butter and it was delicious! I microwaved it for 15 seconds when I got home to make it softer and melty. The top of the bread was really hard/crispy and cut-up the roof of my mouth. But that was kind of expected. At first glance at the menu, I thought $7.50 (accurate?) was expensive, but it really was a good sized baguette. I was decently fully after eating it. The person at the cash register was really nice. They mentioned starting to do take-home meals like chicken noodle soup and pork ragu. They were cooking that up while I was in there and it smelled delicious!

Courtney Anne N.

Yelp
I love this little coffee shop, and they make the best hot mocha I've found in Portland this far. Everyone who works there is also so kind and service is quick. The shop is adorable with vintage decor! Their treats are also great- pb and j royale and their coffee cake is a must try! Reminds me of my grandmas coffee cake.
google avatar

kyenne w.

Yelp
Yes, the coffee cake is fabulous. But my go-to is the ham sandwich. Who knew that 3 ingredients could be so amazing - it's because Shawna sources as well as she bakes. If I can take multiple buses to pick up a sandwich, it's worth stopping by. And yes the cake is awesome. So are the soups - and what other coffee shop (ALSO AMAZING) has a Friday mini-farmers market. Get yourself in here.
google avatar

Matthew H.

Yelp
I think of myself as a bit of a coffee cake connoisseur... and I must say Oui Presse has one of the BEST I've ever had. Kudos to the baker! The coffee is great too, but I specifically go for the coffee cake.
google avatar

Alireza T.

Yelp
While staying in Portland (Hawthorne) area, we walked around and discovered this little coffee shop. We got a Lentil soup and a Ham 'n' Butter sandwich. Both fresh and tasty. Also, the coffee was very good, I tried their espresso.
google avatar

Emily M.

Yelp
Liked it: I was feelin' like drip coffee and some coffee cake, and both did not disappoint. I know it's weird to say that about drip coffee, coffee snobs, but I can only imagine that their pour over and French press are even that much better. They have plenty of tables even on a weekend afternoon. It's very spacious and even though it's a small-ish shop you can feel like you have a little privacy to your conversation. The slice of coffee cake you get for $3.50 is huge, so plan to share it with one or two other people. The atmosphere doesn't feel quite "lived in" or curated like a lot of fancy places; it feels more like a pop-up shop that's only rolling into town for a few weeks. I don't know if that's good or bad, just different.
google avatar

Ahmed N.

Yelp
We came in here to get some work done and a quick bit and we were quickly delighted. The bean on toast was amazing and hit the spot, the lentil soup held an awesome structure and tasty but consistency as well. Overall a good experience and I'll def come back when I'm in the Portland area.

Yelp
AMAZING coffee cake! Super cute location. Very nice employees. Very pleased with our experience there!

Yelp
Coffee. Me. Oui. The simplicity and modesty of Oui Presse Coffee Cafe is a bouquet of freshness in the ever-competitive coffee shop cliche of Portland. Its charm is its coffee. Whether you sit at one of the outdoor tables, pick up an old-school magazine inside, or get a hot cup to go, Oui Presse is how you should be saying yes to your coffee cravings. Coffee? We oui. Oui Presse.
google avatar

Jen K.

Yelp
At the moment, Oui Presse is a minimalist paradise. Some of the hardest reviews to write are of new businesses. Do you write about what is or what (you think) will be? When I've reviewed early, sometimes I've been right on the money and in other cases, things really took a turn I didn't see coming. It is one thing for an owner to say what they have planned and another to execute on that vision. Whether it is by design or just early days, the decor is severely spartan. So even though they have interesting little touches here and there, I was practically blinded by the white walls and a bit put off by the bare space. And yet there are glimpses of such beauty and style it warmed my heart as I was sipping a superbly made Stumptown latte. The signage is almost nonexistent, but Oui Presse is located just a few doors down from Castagna. You are drawn into the space by the pictures of a windblown man reading and a woman holding a cup of coffee in the front picture windows. For a moment I felt as if I was in a graphic novel looking out on Hawthorne. The seating is also a bit utilitarian and so the environment chafed against my personal preference for comfort and color. However, the staff is absolutely lovely and they have a nice selection of magazines with a focus on design and style mags. Don't worry, they also had some sufficiently fun entertainment options at the counter. I'm going to take a wait-and-see approach to this place. It will be very interesting to see how it develops.

Yelp
Stopped in this morning for a mocha and house coffee. Proprietor was pleasant and friendly, interior was comfy and well-kept. Coffees were excellent, but was not asked if I wanted whipped cream on top - nor was any chocolate drizzled over the top. Mocha was not overly sweet and the chocolate flavor was good. The drinks menu was small, but had all the essentials. They have a nice selection of high-end periodicals on sale - good place to go if you want to spend a rainy afternoon reading and drinking coffee. They have a few breakfast selections but I haven't tried them yet - mashed beans on toast! Nice experience. I'd like to return and spend some time at their outdoor seating.
google avatar

Yelp
I must admit that I arrived at this unassuming cafe with the intention of using the washroom. I quickly noticed that all tables inside were taken when I stepped through the door - looked like a good place to study and/or catch up on work. The unisex restroom had two rooms, but the tiny room that housed the toilet had a broken lock, so whoever was occupying the latrine should lock the first door upon entering (there's also a sign to remind/warn you). Since I already had quite the palatable breakfast with tea, I decided to pick up a cup of coffee. I placed an order for their drip coffee to go. It was only $2.00 for a small cup and because I rarely carry cash with me, I felt a bit ridiculous paying with my credit card. Oh well, the tip makes up for it. I seldom drink coffee, but when I do, I prefer to have it black. Oui Presse's drip coffee of the day was very aromatic and earthy. It was also scalding hot, but I managed to down that cup of black liquid caffeine in less than 15 minutes. Was the first and only cup of coffee I had in Portland good? Oui.
google avatar

Vanessa C.

Yelp
I went out of my way to go try their coffee cake since they had good reviews online and I've never been so disappointed. I wasted $3.75 on a burnt piece of flavorless cake. Never returning to this coffee shop. If you know of any amazing coffee cakes, please point me in the right direction.
google avatar

Yelp
Tiny little coffee shop with some limited food options. Very minimal in all fashions including the decor but the flavor was right and it's a nice little quite corner

Yelp
Oui press is a Nice cute charming cafe with a french character. The toast with butter and jam was very nice. Pistachio cake was delicious too. Would definitely recommend it for a coffee outing !!

Yelp
WHAT A JOKE ! On Friday, March 22nd only our first full day in Portland my wife and I decided to take a long walk along Hawthorne Blvd from our airbnb. We wanted to look at the stores and decide where we should have lunch. Early on we stumbled upon this cafe and went inside to check it out. A friendly worker named Jesse greeted us and even offered us a taste of the Espresso Coffee Cake on display. The cake tasted moist & very good ! We put this place high on our possible lunch list as it was only 11am and too early to eat. We checked out every restaurant, bar, eatery, coffee shop & cafe along the way but still liked the idea of lunch at Oui Presse. After reaching our destination 2 hours or so later which was Powell's Books we decided to get a Lyft back to this cafe for lunch at around 1.20pm. We walked in just before 1.30pm and started chatting with a young female behind the counter. We intended to have a ham sandwich, a latte and a piece of cake each for lunch here. Our only choice for a ham sandwich was dashed when she said they were out of baguettes. These guys were open til 6pm and they couldn't even dish up a ham sandwich for lunch. We were not impressed and left quickly to get another Lyft to our 2nd choice for lunch.

Yelp
Delicious beverages and a great selection of bites

Yelp
This coffee shop is fantastic! I walked in for the first time off the street and was greeted with friendly service. Not to mention the coffee was great, but the coffee cake with nuts had me just excited. Check them out for a quick drink!
google avatar

Rachel L.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite coffee shops to hang out and get some work done. Everyone is always so nice and answers any questions I may have about the menu. Their bread is AMAZING! My favorite is the baguette with butter and marionberry jam. Their PB&J Royale is great as well. My favorite thing about Oui Presse is that it's so comfortable and feels like home. A true neighborhood gem!
google avatar

Heather S.

Yelp
What a charming little place! Even the people who work there dress in a French way! Wow! I absolutely loved my tea and the peanut butter and jelly sandwich on homemade bread, peanut butter, and jelly with fresh butter (salted with grey salt). Wow, was that AMAZING!!! It looks like a lot of locals go there, and I can see why! It's a great and quiet place to study or read one of their many magazines (it's a magazine store, as well). How fun!
google avatar

Cindy L.

Yelp
Charming little cafe deep in Hawthorne. The space is hip, yet quaint. They have a great selection of magazines to purchase/read while you are here. Prices are on par with other Portland coffee shops (3.50-4 for a latte). I had the PB and J ROYALE. It was delightful and so filling. The thick cut bread was soft/fluffy, the PB, Strawberry jam, butter, and sea salt melding together for an adult version of a childhood favorite. At 6.50, it might seem steep for a PB and J, but it is so good and filling. Give it a go!
google avatar

Katrina W.

Yelp
Rainy day? Busy day? Need a quiet moment in the middle of the chaos? I've got just the Oui Presse for you. They know how to take your comfort snacks and somehow make them -- and you -- much more comfortable. Their chocolate chip cookies melt from the inside out. Their hot chocolate is unbelievably creamy and served in a little bowl (the better to drink you with, my dear). The PB& J is served with a thick slab of salted butter. You think you don't want it, but just take a bite. You don't even know. The space is bright and airy and simple, but I still find it welcoming and quiet and cozy. Move over, Coca Cola; in my book, Oui Presse is the pause that refreshes.
google avatar

Shannon M.

Yelp
I have come here twice now for coffee and some food. First day I got a latte and the coffee cake... did NOT disappoint! Left here happy and full. Today when I came in I got the latte again and the tomato soup... again not disappointed. I totally recommend coming here and the inside is the sort of coffee shop vibe I like. Lots of work space and is not too loud (: would definitely come back again if I had any more days in Portland! Also, the baguette is so good! Get that if you want something to munch on!
google avatar

Sabrina H.

Yelp
I love Oui Presse! Every time I come in, something is new, even better. What does not change is the awesome coffee, great-feeling space, friendly and helpful baristas and delicious foods. I love the ever-changing soup options. The PB&J is insanely good but so decadent I can only order it once in a blue moon. But that does not mean I can't dream about it. I love the staff here. They may take time to speak to customers, but isn't that why we find ourselves in love with our local spots? I never feel ignored. The inside is cozy when it is cooler, the cafe tables outside the perfect spots as it gets warmer.
google avatar

Camille S.

Yelp
We had the French press coffee which was average. The food menu was unique and looked pretty good but we didn't end up trying anything.
google avatar

Abigail S.

Yelp
Bright spot to do a bit of work when I'm not feeling into staying at home. Bring the noise canceling headphones however as the hard surfaces can make sounds a bit harsh.
google avatar

Jessica G.

Yelp
Met up with a colleague for an overdue coffee date. I decided to order the PB&J Royale everyone on yelp was raving about with an order of a french press. The bread is soft, fluffy, and melts perfectly which holds thinly sliced butter, fresh local strawberry jam, creamy peanut butter, and smoked grey salt. The salt adds a nice textural delight. The butter takes this classic sandwich to a higher level. In the end is it worth $5.00? I'm not quite convinced, but it's worth a try for you to decide. The ambience was cute with the lights and cake stands holding desserts, the magazines for purchase adds whimsy, and the barista was kind in explaining their coffee menu to a new patron. If you're looking for a cute, relaxing, place to drink coffee, give this gem on Hawthorne a try.

Yelp
Cute little coffee shop. Great atmosphere and super friendly employees. Coffee was delicious. Food menu was a tad limited but had good options!

Yelp
Lovely cafe. Big windows, pretty minimalist decor. Like I stepped into a DIY PDX wedding blog. My coffee was spot on and when I ordered a cookie, the owner informed me it was about to go into the oven, if I didn't mind waiting--and am I glad about that timing! Nine minutes later, I had the most heavenly, buttery, warm homemade chocolate chip cookie--and when I say buttery, I mean BUTTERY. I've never known how butter is supposed to "work" with cookies before; it was very different but in a yummy yummy way. One of my only complaints is that the metal chairs are very cold, especially now that fall is here. But even with them, I will definitely go back.
google avatar

Anwar B.

Yelp
I don't really like to do reviews because I understand how this can impact a business But in this case I feel that may help the owner or Managment to improve their service. I spent my days on restaurants and coffees:) So I appreciate a good service... I went to meet with a colleague for coffee and arrived early as always., the person attending was Not in a good mood., I asked him what was their house or best coffee and mentioned that it was my First time here ..he responded really rude that there was not best coffee with a bad attitude I told him that it was fine to get me a regular coffee He keep going and told me /I mean really you need to tell me what you want Bla bla bla So I told him it was fine and if he was irritated I would not want to continue the conversation He rolled his eyes and say whatever... I just walked away feeling sorry for the guy He most be miserable Work by there .

Come here and get the PB&J royal, you will not be disappointed! The fluffy milk bread makes this the best pbj you will ever have.

Yelp
A nice cosy coffee shop on Hawthorne, the decor is certainly different and starkingly empty compared to other coffee places on the east side. I was just checking out coffee places last sunday on Hawthorne and randomly picked three from yelp and tried them out. Had the Iced Mocha here, was good, again, I'm not a coffee connoisseur, so most coffee tastes good to me. Service was friendly, wifi was fast and free. Good place to go if you've work to catch up on.
