I really wanted to love Ouro Pizzeria, but for me the pizza itself fell a bit short. We ordered the margherita, which is our go-to whenever we order pizza. The quality of the cheese was great (although I wish the menu gave me a bit more information about the type of mozzarella they use), and the pizza was cooked perfectly. Unfortunately, the sauce was too sweet for my taste and the basil was a little sparse. As for the crust, it was definitely interesting. Chewy, flavorful and slightly yellow in color. At first I thought it was cornmeal, but I’m told they add a little turmeric to their crust. On their Instagram feed, Ouro claims the crust will “support the heavy handed application of ingredients.” It did not. Each slice completely flopped over with the weight of the margherita toppings, which only consists of sauce, cheese and basil.
All that said, I appreciate the creativity of the menu and we might try more options during our next visit. Also, Eat Street Crossing is an outstanding venue. For me, the sauce and sweetness of Ouro’s Pizza wasn’t my favorite. And let’s face it, there are some reeeeeeally good pizza joints around town these days, so the bar is set high. I’d still recommend checking it out for yourself, especially if you like a sweeter pizza sauce.
