The LA (Takeout) Dinner & A Movie Guide

"Movie Pairing:Miss Juneteenth (Prime) “Nothing moves me to instant, body-wracking tears quite like seeing a mother/daughter relationship on screen. And while there are plenty of reasons why that might be, this is neither the time, nor place to unpack that (it’s Tuesdays at 7pm). So let’s just stick to Miss Juneteenth. Part coming-of-age story, half slice-of-life drama, this tender film explores the intersections of motherhood, poverty, and the all-too-real “This is your dream, not mine” movie trope. Plus, the lead character works in a BBQ restaurant, so in addition to becoming painfully aware of how long it’s been since you’ve talked to your mom, you’ll also be pretty hungry. Place an order at Gold Land and get The Rambler - this giant sampler of house-smoked tri-tip, roasted chicken, sliced linguica, and Southern sides is so hearty and comforting, it’s essentially the food version of a maternal embrace. Oh, and call your mom back.” -KH" - brant cox, kat hong, brett keating, james montgomery

I just got a question for the owner. I've been eating right here for too many years. This is the best place to get ribs by now. I don't feel safe to go near your place. My question is what are you gonna do about this? What happened yesterday? I have a lot of Spanish friends and families. They love your food by yesterday. It was scary.

Tyler Carroll

Google
Beef ribs were small, dry, and over-seasoned. A salty and dissatisfying experience. Mac and cheese a total embarrassment. How do you mess up such a simple dish so badly!?!?

Aberto Bianchi

Google
We have been coming here since the past several months. Really hard to find good quality veg taco. But this place rocks. We got the best taco we have had since a long time. So glad to find a great Mexico restaurant offering veg options.

Nostalgia, Outdoor Grill is a great spot to take the parents, the girlfriend, the kids, or on a solo mission. It sits at an intersection of Culver City that was clearly designed by a nutcase city planner. Roads are coming and going in all directions. The noisy carwash just below adds to the chaos, yet Outdoor Grill survives the mayhem. The smell of BBQ satiates your taste buds once you hit the parking lot, and after ordering your food, making your way to the upstairs deck overlooking the carwash, adds to anticipation. The wait is just long enough to appreciate when you hear your name on the speaker to pick up your feast. The tri-tip and pork sandwiches are the meats to pick. The chicken tastes the same today as it did 35 years ago, dry and stringy, but fear not, the house made BBQ is the key to unlocking the flavor. Get extra BBQ sauce, hell buy a bottle. The Mac and Cheese hits, and the fries and baked beans also dont disappoint. To go orders also work on the way to Venice Beach...

Delicious more bang for your buckz... Fantastic shoestring french 🍟... And did you know that this business has been around since the mid-70s?! And so friendly staff... And 2nd floor open are picnic area

Google
This is the only place in town that sells beef ribs. They're not the best, but this was the worst I've ever had. I have NEVER had to fight to eat with a piece of meat so hard in my life. My teeth and jaw hurt from even trying. I wonder how many times these poor ribs were reheated before making their way to me. Anyway, waste of $30.

Google
I tried their tri tip mini tacos. It was pretty bland. Not that flavorful. Tried their Colby cookies that look pretty but didn't taste as good as they look. For the price, $3.25, it should've been better.

ada yung

Google
Honestly I hoped the food would have been better for the price. But considering the area I guess I should have expected it to be pricey. The tri tip was dry and served cold? The mac and cheese was dry and not too flavorful. Maybe they were having an off day.

Staff P.

Yelp
Food is great. Staff is great. Pickup and delivery time is always accurate. Def recommend the tri tip and hamburger!

Brad M.

Yelp
We ordered baby back ribs and baked beans, potato salad to go. Tonight they were a little burnt and dry. Usually better. I see they are selling tacos etc We will try that soon

Yelp
Went for the first time yesterday after walking by here for years. Was pleasantly surprised! I got a 1/2 half rack baby back ribs combo with Mac and cheese and the beans. Service was great and friendly. I saved half my food and it was still good even upon reheating it later so that's pretty impressive.

Yelp
I've been here many times but today was extremely disappointing. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich, tri tip and ribs plate and a cheeseburger. Everything was very overcooked! The burger patty was so overcooked and dry. The pulled pork was not just overcooked, but dry and hard! I don't know how they store their bread but the bun and sandwich bread were stale and hard to chew. The ribs were definitely not fall of the bone tender. I hate to say this but I'm not going to give this place another chance. I'm not spending a lot of money to see if I get better food next time. I don't know if they changed cooks but where's the quality control? My partner said the BBQ sauce was good, but that shouldn't be the only good comment you have when eating BBQ. Now I'll have to find a new spot as I can't afford to waste my hard earned money and I'll either get no reply or a generic "We're sorry to hear about your experience... Blah blah blah" but not sorry enough to replace my food at their expense.

Yelp
Been coming to this spot for years! I do about, it had been a while, no real reason, but today I saw their banner... "$5 1/3lb BURGER" and I had to resist stomping on the brakes and causing a collision, lol! I already knew they had GREAT BBQ at good prices, and after the miserable experience at Win-DON'T just a few minutes west of Outdoor Grill, this was beyond redemption! You should make it a point to try this spot if you're a meat-etarian. I came in about 6:30p on a cool Saturday night (today, to be honest), aaaand... The car wash was closed, so parking was super easy. There were several staff working to fill pickup and delivery orders, possibly catering? Dining area was clean. A dude was grilling outside, unironically. There was no line, and I was able to order immediately. Not gonna ding a star for the person on register, I know I'm asking for a $5 burger. You WILL have to be very clear on this, I had to repeat "$5 burger" more than once, the first time it was rung in as another thing. It's worth the effort. It was ready in a few minutes, and I took it to go. $6.33 out the door with cheese and taxes included. No BS, no upsell, just a damn fine burger at a great price. I gave them $8 and said keep the change. I got home 10-15 minutes later and it was still warm, even with the convertible top down! The toasted bun was... kinda brioche? It was just right, fresh, and just a little "pop". There was a thousand Island kind of sauce, just enough. There was also fresh lettuce, and the cheese was good. They didn't skimp on the patty (like the paltry fly infested crap at Win-Dow)... it was THICK, juicy, and cooked to a proper "medium well". I would've liked it medium rare, but that's just me; few places ask how you want it done anymore. No complaints, it was quality beef, just a little crispy, but not overly charred. I regret not taking a pic of it, but I was just so damn excited to see if it was as good as it looked, I couldn't wait. And it was much better than expected! I'll get a pic next time, I'm for sure going to make it a point to be at Outdoor Grill for this fantastic deal frequently. Cue the saxophone solo, please.

Yelp
Ordered the super bowl catering trays for $215. It comes with 3 racks of baby back ribs, 3 whole chickens, 3 lbs of tri tip, 1 quart of baked beans, 1 quart of Cole slaw, 1 quart of potato salad, 12 mini rolls. The tri tip is pre sliced and the ribs are already parted. The ribs, baked beans, Cole slaw were delicious and my favorite! I didn't really care for the tri tip. The chicken and potato salad were ok. Would definitely go back for the ribs!

Yelp
Best BBQ place for miles in west LA, I've been ordering from them for years I usually pick up the football party package. the tri-tip, & ribs are delicious, and a nice variety of side dishes. The service has always been very good. The Food has always been ready for phone orders. Ambiance is not the the reason to go to Outdoor grill. The reason a good meal.

Yelp
We were getting a couple cars washed next door, and decided to pop in for a quick snack. At least I can say I've experienced it. Overall, it was okay. It's a convenient location and it's edible, but the meats were incredibly dry. We got the Tri tip sandwich and the Tri tip and chicken plate with veggies and potato salad. For the Tri tip sandwich, I used a full container of BBQ sauce on only 1/3 of the sandwich. I think I probably could have used 2 or 3 containers on it. The Tri tip and chicken plate was pretty much the same level of dry. Sure, the meats were seasoned, but there was no getting past the lack of juicy. I think out of everything, the potato salad had my thumbs up, but even then, it was a bit reminiscent of store bought, but spruced up with a few add-ins on site. Service was relatively quick and it looks like they offer some large party meals, so that would be convenient.

Paul S.

Yelp
Wow! So disappointed with my order today. I've been a long time customer, and this is the first time I've been dissatisfied. Are they under new management? Look, I get it, the food industry is cutting corners to stay afloat, but this experience was disappointing. The beef ribs were so small (see picture) that they fit in the palm of my hand. And to top it off, they were dry and barely edible with little meat on the bone. I hope this isn't the new norm. I'm giving it a two star rating because the bbq sauce was still tasty.

Yelp
The best in the west can't go wrong anytime of the day the best thing in their menu don't sleep on it it a must

Yelp
I've been going to the Outdoor Grill for over 20 years on a weekly basis and have always been happy with their food and service. Today this was not the case. I ordered a Cheeseburger combo, fries and a coke. Pretty simple order and yet somehow Cash the person that took my order got it wrong. When I got home and opened up my order I was given a Chicken sandwich. I called Outdoor Grill and told Cash that he gave me the wrong order and rather than him owning up to his mistake he insisted I order a Chicken sandwich. No ownership of his mistake, he insisted it's what I ordered and told me I should've reviewed the receipt. His customer service is terrible. I don't know if I'll go back anytime soon.

Yelp
The only ribs that were so good that I kept eating until I couldn't see mine anymore! Sucking down the bones and marrow for another taste after polishing off a rack. That barbecue sauce was so delectable that I was licking the to-go containers. Sides were small, but mighty in flavor. Overall, this place gave me the grills with how good it was! Will revisit soon.

Judy M.

Yelp
This was a major disappointment!! we were told the Baby back ribs we're outstanding .What we got were dried up tough ribs that were awful,!So disappointing to drive 20 minutes to take home a meal that was so bad! JUDY July 5 2024

Yelp
Walked in after having some coffee nearby to grab a quick bite. Got the 1/2 sandwich combo with fries, a chicken and a tri-tip street taco, and a cookie. It was all made to order which is really nice, fries were piping hot. They had some nice season salt (Lowry's?), very good. We had the pulled pork sandwich, and man was it good. A nice sweet/spicy bbq sauce, good meat, but the star of the sandwich was honestly the grilled onion and peppers on it - fantastic! The street tacos were LOADED with meat, no holding back. Very nice seasoning and flavor. We had the fresh salsa on top with it - a very solid street taco. Lastly the cookie was honestly just a really solid chocolate chip cookie. Overall, really great food I'd definitely eat again. None of it was the best I've ever had, BUT.... I haven't mentioned the price! All of that was only $20!! The tacos were $1.50 each which is insanely cheap for this area. If this were a typical "LA" pricing, it'd be $40+. For this price point I think it's incredibly hard to beat, so ultimately that's what makes it 5 stars to me. (Also for my personal BBQ-cred, I'm from Oklahoma/Texas, just for reference).

Patrick P.

Yelp
Some of the better bbq I have had in LA (I'm from Texas) Still...wish there was more choice
google avatar

Yelp
I've been going here since 2000. Sad to say that the food has completely took a turn for the worst. Not only is the place unsightly and dirty the tri-tip taste like shoe leather. The ribs have no meat and the once second to none mac & cheese, is Un edible. This place is living on borrowed time and should be shut down. It should be no stars.
google avatar

Joe M.

Yelp
Been 20+ years since I had been here after I had moved away. Found my self in the area and went and got 4 tri tip sandwiches and they were as good as I remember! Love their BBQ sauce as well and the sandwich is packed with lean meat on a nice fresh roll.
google avatar

Daphne B.

Yelp
I've been eating here for almost two decades. Their tri-tip sandwich, fries and Mac n cheese are my go to. Sometimes I add a Caesar salad to my order. I like the sandwich because they beef is thinly sliced. Fries and Caesar are good. Now, let's get to the main event... the mac n cheese and OG's bbq sauce. This could be my favorite mac n cheese anywhere. It's awesome. The only thing better is the bbq sauce. Fries, beef, my finger... all taste great with this stuff. I'm not proud, but I have drank the remaining sauce. Hey, no bbq sauce left behind. Bonus? This is located next to a car wash so you can eat while your cat gets a bath.

Vicente D.

Yelp
Love all the food! Chicken and Ribs were very good, plus the beans and the corn bread. My wife had the Tri tip sandwich and she love it.

Ess K.

Yelp
Outdoor Grill has been a favorite for years, and so happy it survived Covid with its still great good and amazing staff! Hard choice to choose between their grilled beef ribs, pork ribs, chicken, tri tip beef or hamburgers! Do all! And did I mention their chicken or beef tacos? Get extra salsa! And making homemade side choices...fries? Oh, their potato salad and coleslaw! Beans and rice! Oh, salad anyone? They're quick and delicious - and did I say great?

Raul R.

Yelp
Food was good and delivered promptly , my guests and I were very satisfied . With my guest all asking the name of this place !!!! Thank you and will be back for more

Michael M.

Yelp
Great Ribs and brisket. However Chicken sandwich is about as plain as water, but dryer then cracker, even with bbq sauce. Everything else is great! But that sangwich! Geeeesssss!!! Of course, just my opinion.

Alex O.

Yelp
Absolutely loved the chicken. Got a half chicken with some fries. Very tender and moist with a nice light char on the skin. First bite and I knew I'd order it again. Loved the second story dining area overlooking the boulevard. Perfect for the hot summer day my fiance and I enjoyed. Will be back without a doubt!
google avatar

Tommy H.

Yelp
Barbeque grilled chicken was very good as was the barbeque sauce . But, the so called Caesar salad dressing was not good ,should be improved.

Jesus V.

Yelp
Worst experience ever, and I've been coming here for years. Definitely not the same, not sure if it's under new management or new employees but it was the worst. After asking details of the plate I ordered chicken and trim tip plate, they literally gave me a small thigh and a leg when they said it was white meat. They took 30+ mins to get 2 plates. The fry's were brunt to a crisp and others got food before I did. When ask if I can have 3 bbq sauces they say I had to pay for the extra. This is after paying $42+ and waiting over 30 min. Really don't think I would be coming back. There is other bbq places out there.
google avatar

Heidy E.

Yelp
All the food was great, but be careful and make sure you verify the prices before (maybe take a photo of the website) ordering/picking up, because they'll change prices on you. I was overcharged on my order (Super Bowl & a Play-off), and Cash the new manager, lived up to his name. Instead of apologizing for their mistake, he went ahead and changed his prices on his website (which I'm having to pay for) after i left a message regarding the error. I coordinated an event and contacted the Outdoor grill, because I've always enjoyed their food and friendly service. This time with new management, it was different. Be aware.
google avatar

Srt Viperboi ..

Yelp
Really good place, I often come here in the summer days.. Its really a nice loc tion on Washington Bl.. Outdoor Barbeccue Chicken here is fresh, not the frozen packaged kind. Really good original sauces. And the best was the customer service. They do everything in their power to make sure that you're more than satisfied with the food and the experience, all with a smile and some conversation.

Spike S.

Yelp
terrible. I went here a couple months ago it was really good but now it's awful. First the food quality got worse my burger was so dry I couldn't even finish it,Second I ordered Mac and cheese as my side and they gave me fries. And not to mention it got way more expensive.
google avatar

Mark P.

Yelp
Great food, convenience, and car wash! All in one stop! The Tri Tip Tacos are great! Mac and cheese is on point.

Yelp
There once was a man. A lonely man, but not without a wife. He was timid, the kind of guy who would shy away from being cut in line at the store while buying plain saltines and light mayonnaise. His car had been scraped numerous times by his neighbor without recompense, and he bashfully enjoyed skim milk with a well done quarter inch steak and ketchup. His children couldn't respect him, despite their efforts, and agreed with their mother it was best to leave him behind lest this husk of a man rob them of their vigor. Now, completely alone, the man decided it was certainly time for a change. To travel the world (a goal he once heard mentioned in 9th grade woodshop) would be his life's new ambition. But he knew that he had deserved this loneliness. A punishment of abandonment, seclusion. A sentence not rare enough for 'men' such as he. And so, he would chastise himself with a brutal journey in hopes that he may emerge a man that could court some mild form of interest. Perhaps his sorrow may prove a mildly juicy tale. First, he sought out Death Valley, a popular off-roading spot near his home in Baker, CA (home of the world's tallest thermometer). He set off into the land of the highest temperatures on earth, but quickly turned back in his rented Subaru. It was quite dry and bothered his sinuses. A new trip, he pondered, but where to next? Africa. The Sahara. He had seen an episode of daytime television regarding this location, and it surely appeared to be a land of excitement and wonder. And pain. A suffering without moisture or comfort. He arrived. The sand whipped at his face as he stared into the blank void of nothingness. His first steps onto the endless sand were burdensome, each foot's pace an enormous load across the waterless plain. No, he thought, I have one more place. One more place to go with the driest, most unpleasant and blandest thing in this world. "Drier, more unpleasant, and blander than I." And so he arrived at Outdoor Grill and ordered the tri tip. And they forgot the Mac n cheese.

Yelp
What? This tiny places just sits next to a gas station in the middle of Mar Vista?! I'm so glad I stopped here while my car was getting washed. I feel very LA eating at this little hole in the wall. Burger was exactly what you expect and the price was right!

Vincent H.

Yelp
Excellent food, at a good price! I've eaten here on several occasions and it never disappoints!! And love that BBQ sauce!!

Yelp
We finally put an end to our years of "next time we drive by, we will go there" phase with the Outdoor Grill. We stopped by today, and seemingly so did everyone else in the neighborhood - this place was b.u.s.y!!!! We got the following items: + tri tip taco combo (3 for $11.85) + chicken and ribs combo with 2 sides [fries and Mac and cheese] ($17.95) + side of fries ($3.75) The fries were huge --- and I mean HUGE portions. One would have been plenty for our family to share. The Mac and cheese was delicious, slightly peppery. The tri tip tacos were also flavorful. The chicken was the "miss"of the meal, we both agreed it was incredibly dry. There was a few areas for outdoor seating, but this definitely isn't the place you come with a large group. Parking was available in the car wash.

Kimberly H.

Yelp
I ordered 3 of The Super Bowl packages for 40 people. We had plenty of ribs, tri-tip and chicken left over, but the sides seemed to be portioned wrong...none leftover. Everthing was delicious! The ribs have a lot of meat on them and are not fatty. I gave 4 stars because it was a crowd pleaser and I can't wait to have it again. I took off a star because the ordering process is very frustrating. Originally ordered online(Toast) and when I called to add to the order a few days later, the restaurant couldn't find the order. I am not sure if it was because Toast was waiting to send the order to the restaurant on the day of the delivery. We were getting delivery reminders from Toast when the restaurant was saying they didn't have the order...which was strange and made me nervous that our would be wrong or not delivered at all. Next time I will call in the order. Overall I recommend this place for your next big gathering.
google avatar

Armin N.

Yelp
Absolutely finger licking good. Also the bbq sauce is amazing. Delivery was fast and the food came nice and hot
google avatar

Tom F.

Yelp
Why do I bother tipping these guys? Better yet, why do I even bother coming here? Rude cashier. Dried out food. I just dropped $70 before tip for some take for the family and one of the items I ordered was a full rack of baby rack ribs. What I got was bunch single of precut bones that's dried out that's been sitting in the steamer. Thoroughly disappointed. Will not return.

Gail L.

Yelp
Love love love Outdoor Grill. It's so convenient to enjoy a delicious bbq lunch ( try the tri tip) while getting your car washed. Sometimes I'll even drop my car off and walk about a block to get my nails done. When I.m not there to collect my car when it is done, they'll move it to the side of the building.

Sean O.

Yelp
Really good portions, favorite item was the brisket, brisket was bussin also amazing mac and cheese the mac and cheese was very unique but very good
google avatar

Chase S.

Yelp
Simply it's okay. Walking in no one was really 'friendly' nor 'rude' the staff seemed to do their own thing in the back whilst an older lady manned the register. I believe she is the owner and out of everyone, she was the least friendly. Ordered a classic hamburger (nothing special) and it was okay. The food was warm but not hot; felt like it didn't just come off the grill (it was not a busy day) Food was priced a little above average but the quality of the food was not reflected in that price. All in all my entire experience was simply 'Okay'. I'd go back in a pinch if I was starving.

Jusn P.

Yelp
Best I pay 22 for fries chicken and ribs and drinks so I'm happy thanks for made this delicious food
google avatar

Elizabeth L.

Yelp
Outdoor Grill is adorable. It is located right next to a car wash so be careful driving by so you don't miss it. If your windows are open you will smell the wonderful flavor a barbecue and grilled chicken all done Outdoors. The place is small and can't get crowded but there is sitting outside and you can always get your order to go. They will pack you order carefully and they always get it right. The service is very good. We specially love any of their grilled pork items. Try it.
google avatar

Kevin C.

Yelp
Really wanted to like this place because i live walking distance and it has a cool little patio overlooking Washington, but was very disappointed. I got the Tri tip and chicken plate (11.50 before taxes if I recall correctly), which came with 3 pieces of Tri tip and about a quarter of a chicken. Tri tip was dry and tough and chewy. When Gordon Ramsey calls things inedible I always think he's exaggerating but this was borderline inedible. The chicken and bbq sauce were good though, so give it an extra star for that. Will give this place another chance and get the pulled pork and ribs next time, and maybe some sides as well. Im thinking that maybe they just had an off day since it was raining earlier so they didn't expect too many customers since most of their seating is outside. Because if their Tri tip is always that tough i don't see the point of them even having it on the menu because no one would ever come back.
google avatar

Robert H.

Yelp
I wanted to give and update I had and issue with this establishment and Jeff who I assume is the owner of the BBQ place and reach out to me to resolve the issue. He was very kind and understanding with my concerns. Thank you Jeff
google avatar

Dewayne S.

Yelp
This establishment has an amazing foundation. The atmosphere is calm. The food is delicious, very saucy. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable about the menu items.
google avatar

Evelyn S.

Yelp
Outdoor grill is my favorite bbq spot. I have been going here for 20 years and even though I don't go here often because I live far, I do make the drive a few times a year!!! Love the ribs!!!!!!!!!!
google avatar

Eric S.

Yelp
My wife and I ordered a catering package for this year's Super Bowl party to ensure we could feed visiting family, with a couple of minor modifications requested for the menu. We knew Outdoor Grill would be super-busy that day but our order was ready on time and totally accurate. The food was delicious and a hit at the party. Touchdown!

Violet K.

Yelp
Luv this place. I eat out a lot and can't beat the consistency and the price. With all food and restaurant prices going up so much all around Los Angeles over the last year, so appreciate that this favorite of mine still reasonable. When I am feeling healthy, I order the steamed veggies and the salmon. Rest of the time I order the baby back ribs, tri tip sandwich or the pulled pork. Never had a bad experience so keep coming back, been eating here for more than a decade. My kids swear by the Mac and cheese as their favorite anywhere. Frankly, I think it's an LA iconic place. Not a chain, just plain old good food. All around thumbs up.

Olivia K.

Yelp
Love this place. One of my all time favorite mac n cheese. The service is fast and the people who work there are so kind. The ambiance is friendly, good for families and children too. Best LA BBQ in my books! I'll be ordering and visiting regularly with family and friends, and myself :)
