"There are several feel-good restaurants in Baton Rouge, but perhaps none as much as Valley Park’s Owen’s Grocery and Market (also known as Miss Emma’s), open since 1938. Back then it was a gas station and grocery store, but the addition of hot breakfast and lunch in the ’80s made it into the institution it’s known as today. You’ll want to try all the sides here (mac and cheese, yams, green beans, potato salad, collard greens, red beans) to go with daily specials of fried or smothered chicken, fried pork chops, lasagna, and the shop’s Truck Driver Sandwich: meatloaf and American cheese, dressed like a po’ boy on a French baguette. Desserts like peach cobbler and sweet potato pie are the best around." - Clair Lorell

I've discovered a gem. The breakfast that I received from this place screamed come again. Everything was delicious. I loved the biscuits and pancakes. This is my new go-to place. Step back Waffle House. This place is no hit or miss. It's a hit for me.

First time eating here today and I could not have been more impressed. Mrs. Cynthia was so welcoming. I had the hamburger steak, mashed potatoes, collards, yams and cornbread. Everything was absolutely delicious. Definitely want to come back and try the fried fish!

This place has such a welcoming ambiance. Reminds me of going to a family reunion. So much history is steeped in this space. The food is Amazing and heartfelt. Owen's makes the best yams and Cornbread Dressing (my faves) but the whole menu is a delight. The Owner is so sweet and is a Matriarch of the community.

Google
Was very disappointed with the breakfast from here was expecting more better due to the reviews , I had a pork chop breakfast and the pork chop looked like it was molded and cooked in dirty grease , the hashbrowns had not flaw or on them whatsoever not even salt and pepper . The grits were okay and the eggs were too but after I saw the pork chop I lost my appetite

So friendly is the astompere which is important to me, everyone is kind every time I go there for lunch. The turkey wings and the cornbread dressing are the best.

I've always given the food here 5 stars, I give the employee that called me to tell me that they didn't have what I ordered, 0 stars. She called from a 1-888 and those calls I usually don't answer. I decided to answer this time and I simply said "hello" as soon as I answered. The call was silent after that for a few seconds. At that point I began thinking it was just a solicitor or a robo call. As I was about to hang up, a lady says, "so you just gonna hold the phone." First of all, it's not my fault you didn't hear me say hello. And second, that's how you talk to a customer?? Even if I was holding the phone. You called from a toll free number. I don't care how good your food is, you can lose customers due to bad customer service. And you lost one today.

Yelp
I learned about this place from a Facebook group post and from the various comments figured I needed to try them. They were close to my job as well so that was a plus. I enjoyed my meal and will definitely return to try more items on the menu.

Yelp
I love their ham, egg, & cheese breakfast sandwich. I finally decided to try out the lunch menu today and it was great! I ordered the Sliced Roast with cornbread dressing and Mac and cheese and my father got the smothered Turkey neck with okra and collard greens. The food here has lots of flavor!

Yelp
This place is sooo good! Honestly the best food in town! I can't wait to go back. I wish they were open for dinner too. I had the lasagna, Mac and cheese, red beans, and corn bread. All for only $12. The staff were super friendly too. It is in a odd location but it's not to be overlooked. I will be back soon!

Yelp
This was my first time eating from here. I had the chicken and waffles with a side of cheese grits and everything was fresh and tasteful. I will be visiting this family owned business.

Yelp
Heard about this place and wanted to give it a shot. Called in and ordered me a Fried Chicken platter with Mac and cheese and mashed potatoes and it also comes with an option of a roll or corn bread I chose the corn bread. The food was really good what I do like about it it's that it felt like something you cook at home. The chicken was so moist and delicious the sides were on point and the corn bread was super good for what I have tried in town. They do have different lunch options every day and I love the fact that menu option on Yelp it's pretty self explanatory. When I got there I was a little bit in awe because I wasn't expecting this place to be located kinda in a neighborhood but I guess it adds to its charm. Will definitely recommend and hope you like it as much as me.

Yelp
I LOVE this place . You can absolutely not pass it up. Porkchops are unbeatable. The family that runs this place are so dedicated and polite. They remeber my name everytime I come and always make sure my order is hot and correct!! LOVE THEM

Yelp
I've ordered a few different meals from here and you can tell that the food was made with love and by experienced cooks. Love that this is a family business. Today I had the chicken and waffles with a side of cheese grits and everything was perfect. It's rare that I find grits cooked like my grandmother or mom would cook but these were amazing. The chicken was not overly seasoned or spicy but just the right amount to complement the swetness of the waffle. Will continue to patronize this business.

Yelp
Fantastic food - true Southern cooking but not too heavy. Fabulous owners. Decor is laid-back and casual. We've always eaten in but take out seems popular too. A seemingly unknown gem - GREAT, GREAT experience!

Yelp
Some of the best soul food you'll ever taste. And the owners are the nicest people you'll meet.

Yelp
My mother was from southern Mississippi and knew how to cook wonderful homemade southern dishes. Cynthia Green, owner of Owen's Grocery is that kind of cook. She has daily breakfast and lunch specials and is opened everyday except Saturday from 630am-400pm and Sunday morning opens at 10am.. My favorite dishes that she has is smothered chicken with rice & gravy, liver & onions, meatloaf, stuffed bell pepper, her "Truck Driver" hamburger Poboy(secret family seasoning in the meat and unlike anything you've ever had before), banana pudding, banana cake and carrot cake. Her plate lunches run about $6-$7 with generous portions so it is truly a bargain. You won't be disappointed if you eat there. High quality southern cooking just like my mothers.
