February: Our Most Exciting New Hotels

"With a name taken from a poem by Edward Lear, the Owl and the Pussycat wears its literary inspiration on its sleeve. And if you were to imagine what a modernist Sri Lankan boutique hotel dedicated to a Victorian eccentric might look like – with a direct view onto the Indian Ocean – you’d be on the right track." - The MICHELIN Guide UK Editorial Team

"With a name taken from a poem by the Englishman Edward Lear, the Owl and the Pussycat wears its literary inspiration on its sleeve — and if you were to imagine what a modernist Sri Lankan boutique hotel dedicated to a Victorian eccentric might look like, you’d be very much on the right track. It’s set right on the water, with a direct view onto the Indian Ocean, just down the coast from Galle, not far from Unawatuna Beach, one of the island’s finest." - Tablet Hotels

Absolutely loved my stay – pure relaxation from start to finish. The property is stunning, and I highly recommend booking an ocean view room—there’s nothing like falling asleep to the sound of waves every night. The location is breathtaking, the pool is peaceful and serene, and the set dinners were delicious and beautifully presented.||The staff truly went above and beyond to make me feel welcomed and cared for. I felt completely at ease throughout my stay. Already dreaming about coming back!

This hotel is a real gem. We wondered what it would be like given its quirky name but it was wonderful. Lovely colourful buildings, very nicely decorated rooms and fantastic apartments. The pool isn't huge but good enough to get some exercise..the hotel is right on the ocean, in a beautiful small bay which, unlike nearby Unawatana, is unspoilt by inappropriate high rise hotels. Above all, Nihal the manager and all his staff went out of their way to help us, both with our choice of accommodation and local knowledge. Definitely one to return to.

This was our final stop on a three week tour of Sri Lanka and was designed as our relaxing downtime before the journey home.|Accommodation: Our room was "The Boat" which had a large well equipped bedroom with large balcony overlooking the gardens and sea; the view somewhat limited by overhanging trees. Good, large bathroom with excellent shower.|Public Areas: The pool and bar areas were lovely and well maintained. The pool is very shallow at one end, so suitable for small children. The hotel sits right on the beach, but the beach at this point is rocky. A short walk takes you to a beach area where you can swim. Stilt fishermen operate right in front of the hotel, so lots of photo opportunities. There are two excellent library/TV rooms, both really tastefully decorated and well stocked with books, etc.|Restaurant: Breakfast, lunch and dinner are very good; although the lunch menu is somewhat limited. Dinner was good particularly when we treated ourselves to the excellent seafood platter for two; although the menu price is only indicative of final cost dependant on fish/shellfish available.|Staff: We found all the staff to be friendly, helpful and competent. Particular praise to the General Manager, his assistant, chef and all the bar/restaurant staff.|We would certainly return for another very comfortable and enjoyable stay.

Manager Nihal Weerasiri, as well as Nayani and the other staff were very thoughtful and their service was amazing. Would like to make special mention of Nihal who was so kind and thoughtful. Had a couple of Sri Lankan breakfasts, which seemed decent. Property seems in need of refurbishment, and more diligent maintenance. Pool seemed small. Approach to property a bit problematic due to inadequate turning space for larger vehicles.

Beautiful boutique hotel with amazing facilities and staff. We had a suite which was perfect for us and our children. Comfortable beds and excellent service. The breakfast was delicious and made to order. Lovely pool and quiet place. Highly recommend!

I rarely write reviews, but this experience deserves to be shared. This hotel has so much potential with its stunning location and overall property design – but sadly, the service completely ruins everything.||||From the moment I arrived, no one at the front office acknowledged my presence. The staff seemed completely unaware of guest arrivals and had zero sense of professionalism. Basic manners were missing – no greetings, no assistance, and no courtesy whatsoever. It felt like the staff were doing me a favor by letting me stay there.||||The F&B service was equally poor. The waiters lacked training, were unresponsive, and looked lost most of the time. The only positive I can mention is that the food tasted good, but that’s not enough to make up for the awful service.||||The entrance to the hotel is also very unappealing and gives a bad first impression – a shame for such a nicely located property.||||To management: you seriously need to re-train your team. No matter how beautiful your hotel is, guests won't return if the service is this careless.||||Would never recommend this place to anyone unless major improvements are made.

Lovely location by the sea. We were upgraded to a suite so had a nice living/kitchen/dining area as well as a large bedroom. Very friendly staff. Easy to take a tuc-tuc to Unawatuna from the main road and the hotel gave guidance on an appropriate fare.

We were there for only one night but it was excellent. The sea view suit was awesome and the staff including Nihal and Saumya took great care of us. Food options are somewhat limited but there are plenty of eataries nearby so that’s not an issue either. Keep up the good work.
