"In response to the 2016 presidential election, a contingent of American bakers, led by Susannah Gebhart of Old World Levain Bakery in Asheville, North Carolina, rediscovered the glory of election cakes and attempted to “#MakeAmericaCakeAgain.” As Bon Appétit reported at the time, these bakers were motivated by a desire to encourage voting, honor history, and even “reinvigorate the lost levity of the democratic process.” The practice then saw a large surge of interest during the 2020 election." - Dana Hatic

"Asheville is blessed with a number of excellent bakeries, but Old World Levain (OWL) is in a class by itself. Founder Susannah Gebhart learned the art and science of crafting her naturally leavened old-world breads and European pastries from a fourth-generation Spanish Italian baker. Her bakeshop in West Asheville and the newer second location on Charlotte Street near downtown are often crowded with locals lined up for the perfect, airy baguettes and Instagramable sourdough loaves, as well as shatter-in-your-mouth croissants, jewel-like tarts sparkling with crystallized herbs, sugared Scandinavian cardamom buns, and other pastry delights. A sizable menu of coffee drinks and teas helps wash it all down." - Gina Smith

My highschool friend is back in town for the first time in 28 years. He was an exchange student from Germany. I wanted to take him and his daughter to a local bakery for breakfast. Drip coffee and hot chocolate were very good. The pastries were magnificent. I had the Coffee Walnut Strudel. We also had a Chocolate Croissant, Cardamom Bun, and a Morning Bun. We also grabbed some extras and a baguette for tomorrow.

Google
I got the walnut wheat bread and a savory danish. The danish was very good, and I appreciated the uniqueness. The walnut bread was definitely my favorite though, and was excellent. It’s very hard to find good bread in NC. My only complaint would be the price. A danish and a loaf of bread cost me over $17.

Google
These people seriously know how to bake. That may seem like an unnecessary statement, but not all bakeries have skilled and artistic professionals like OWL Bakery does. They have a passion and love for the craft, and it shows in the baked goods they produce. Hands down, come here and get some of the highest quality baked goods you'll ever taste... then get extras to take home!

Google
The pastry chefs here are doing amazing things- no exaggeration, rivaling Europe's best. The savory danish is a unicorn bakery delight. Also, the best espresso I have tasted in years- full of bright citrus notes.

Google
perfection. delicious croissants, coffee, and bread. if you love classic laminated pastry and sourdough you absolutely must try OWL. one of the best in the southeast for sure. i only wish there were a few more spots inside to sit & enjoy!

Google
Quiet little bakery with loud and delicious flavors. Rotating weekly breads, interesting and unique sweets to try. Great coffee as well!

Google
WOW! Best pastries I’ve ever tried in the United States. All of which were fresh and had the perfect blend of flavors and correct texture. The Rose Almond Croissant was buttery, flaky and crunchy outside while being soft and sweet inside partly due to the almond paste. The Cardamon Bun was crunchy outside and soft inside with the perfect amount of Cardamon. The sweet Danish was sweet with a hint of acidity and the perfect dough texture. Did not take more than 5min to order and receive my food. The hot latte was creamy and perfect amount of coffee for me. I do advise you to go before 10:00am if you want to try all of their delicious pastries and quiche. Will absolutely come back again.

Google
Stoked we were able to grab some pastries this morning before hitting the road! Arrive 10 minutes before they opened and was 6th in line. By the time we left there were probably 10 people in line behind us! They are operating a walk up window system and asking their guests to mask up! There was plenty of outdoor seating but we took ours to go! Service was quick and friendly. Everything we ordered was delicious and I even grabbed a tote! We had the following pastries: Morning Bun - absolutely must order Sweet Danish - strawberry was fantastic Ham & Cheese Croissant- Yummmmm Lemon Tart - BEAUTIFUL!!! Pastelito - perfect combo of guava paste and cream cheese We also snagged a piece of quiche which had spring onions and was super tasty as well! Definitely recommend visiting this bakery! My partner has a coffee with cream and their vanilla cardamom syrup which I’m assuming they make in house. We saw some of the bread going out, and regretted our decision to purchase bread before we left for our trip! Thank you Owl Bakery for making delicious food for your community to enjoy!

Yelp
I stopped on my way through town and boy do I regret not getting more pastries! This location was perfectly just outside the busy part of town and there was plenty of street parking. The space inside was welcoming and there weren't too many people inside on this Saturday morning. The staff were very helpful and did not judge me in my ordering of a few sweet treats to go! My favorite by far was the strawberry seasonal items! I ate two on the ride home and the other two the next morning after being heated up with my morning coffee. Anytime I'm in Asheville I will definitely try to come back and sample more of the baked goods!

Katherine R.

Yelp
Great bakery -- worthy of five stars except for the way I was treated by the person who took my order. I guess sometimes people don't realize they have biases and are unaware they're being unkind. However, the perfect cardamom bun, otherworldly morning bun and perfectly executed savory strudel took some of the sting out of the experience. (The barista was a sweetheart, it should be said.)

Sonal G.

Yelp
We dropped by this bakery on our way to the arboretum one morning to grab a drink and some bakery treats. There were sooo many different things I wanted to try in the pastry case! We settled on: - a London fog, really fragrant and tasty - a cardamom bun, very strong of cardamom and the pearl sugar on top added a nice crunch, not too sweet as there was a salt flavor in there that balanced really nicely - a savory danish, beautifully set with pickled carrot on top and a really crisp pastry underneath - a rose almond croissant, buttery and so flaky and tastes fresh out of the oven, such a nice almond rose filling inside, one of my husbands favorites There's not a ton of seating inside, but there were spots open when we went on a weekday morning around 10. Highly recommend!

Kim B.

Yelp
Before you actually enter OWL Bakery, it catches your attention because the outdoor air smells delicious. Go inside and be greeted with smiles and beautiful things to look at. We love that they also sell flowers! The savory strudel was the best unexpectedly amazing bite. The cardamom bun was also a favorite. Perfect smooth coffee served by the kindest person on an early morning.

Yelp
While I was visiting on 06JUL2024, I searched for a coffee shop that was not a chain and Owl Bakery had good reviews. I bought a large drip coffee for my sister, chai tea for myself, and a blueberry pastry to share. My sister was pleased with her coffee, we both enjoyed my chai tea, and the blueberry pastry was amazing! I should have taken a picture of the pastry, but it is on the second shelf down on the left. The couple in line behind me ordered the blueberry pastry to share and they are regulars.

Jennifer C.

Yelp
Good but super pricey for what it is. I got an apple strudel and it was $7. That being said it was well made. The strudel was perfectly flakey and the apples nice and soft. It did say there was a coconut frangipane but I didn't taste that at all. Also got a drip coffee which I would pass on. A little sour. Others in my group got the coffee cake strudel (walnut based) and the seasonal veggie strudel and danish. I did like that none of the sweet pastries were overly sweet. It's a pretty small area but they do have some seating indoors. They have cooking/baking books you can peruse. They also sell some unique wines.

Melissa W.

Yelp
Cute spot. Pastries look amazing. Very small space- pretty cramped. Long line but quick service. Didn't give 5 stars bc the tea I got was extremely bitter and over steeped. I would also recommend having a bottle of simple syrup available for guests to use as needed- it was too busy for me to ask behind the counter- so I just used a raw sugar packet in my iced tea and crunched on hard sugar the whole time

Michelle C.

Yelp
The cutest little bakery! We only stopped through for a few pastries before leaving town, so unfortunately we didn't get the ~full~ experience. But these pastries were MOUTH WATERING. The servers behind the counter - SWEET AS CAN BE.

Jackie D.

Yelp
So glad I found this place on Yelp. We stopped here on our way to a hike in the Black Mountain area and it was delightful. Busy, but a very short wait, you could tell this was a popular place with lots of regulars because everyone knew what to order immediately. Me on the other hand, I had to take everything in while I was in line and make a snap decision. Luckily, you can't lose. I had the gougere, the almond rose, and the chocolate croissant. All delicious. When a croissant is executed correctly, there's nothing better. Along with a great cup of coffee, this was a lovely breakfast on the go!

Shantal H.

Yelp
Full transparency: my husband and I originally came here to order some pastries, especially after seeing how delicious they looked online. Unfortunately, they had already run out by the time we arrived. We didn't want to leave empty handed, so we both decided to try one of their drinks. My husband ordered a hot chocolate and I ordered a brown butter chai latte. My latte was super creamy and had a nice buttery flavor at the end. It was divine! I do hope to return soon and try some pastries next time.

Lisa E.

Yelp
Loved OWL & the adorable backyard seating area, watching the tiny birds feast on the crumbs of baked goods. Exceptional pastries. Did not find them to be pricey, that is what baked goods made with quality ingredients & care cost these days. Both times we found parking right on the street, but it was late June & town was not that busy while we visited. A definite gem if you enjoy coffee & talented pastry chefs.

Jessica E.

Yelp
We had a chance encounter with this bakery as we were looking around for a morning coffee and a treat. This is the cutest little bakery I've ever seen. Everything smelled GREAT, from the coffee to the baked goods, even the bathroom (it had a little diffuser in it with peppermint oil or something; it was lovely). I had the buttered chai, which was absolutely soul-warming. I also had the ham and cheese croissant and morning bun. Honestly, it was the BEST croissant I have had in my life. I spent the rest of the trip thinking about this little breakfast treat spot. You will not regret it. It seems like a spot that locals like, too.

David T.

Yelp
The Pasteis de Nata weren't as good as I had hoped however the savory strudel was absolutely delicious. Personally, I prefer the croissants from Underground Bakery in Hendersonville.

Kelly L.

Yelp
Breads, pastries and coffees oh my. Everything is really good here. Fast and friendly people and cute space. I got a savory danish, a sweet danish, pasteis de nata, and a sesame loaf. All great! Space is super cute with some seating. Ordering can be inside or they also have a window on the side of the building. I can see parking being a potential issue since there's no parking lot, only street parking but people are usually in and out pretty quick.

Benjamin H.

Yelp
This bakery takes favorites and enhances them. The croissants are solid, the tarts are a piece of art, and generally anything you order will be satisfying. On the flip side, the prices Ensure that getting something for two people will probably run you around $30. We got a cardamom roll, a chai latte, a lemon curd tart, and a ham and gruyere croissant. The chai latte was a bit too frothy, with not enough of the spiced chai. But I suppose that depends on how you like it. My suggestion would be to visit when you want to splurge a bit

Hannah H.

Yelp
Do you ever have a meal that feels like a treat or moment of indulgence? OWLs croissants always feel like a moment of self care when I sit down to eat them. Their seasonal flavors are always eclectic and fun which is what makes them so delicious. We recently got three to go - the ham and cheese, goat cheese and greens with watermelon radish, and their pimento cheese. All three were layered with butter and pastry dough and loaded with toppings. It was a pure moment of happiness getting to dig into each of these but the goat cheese and greens one will always be my favorite! Thanks for gracing us with your treats OWL!

Stephan M.

Yelp
OWL has become a true Asheville staple over the years when it comes to pastries and bread! This is my go to for savory pasties and they're hands down the best in Asheville. From classic coffee drinks, creative signature coffee/tea drinks, to whole baguettes OWL really has it all! I usually stop in for a coffee but always end up leaving with some Savory pastries and a loaf of bread. If you're driving by OWL make sure to stop in!

Katrin W.

Yelp
Came here for breakfast while we were visiting Asheville. I want to start off by saying the service was absolutely exceptional! The people were very kind and helpful with good communication skills. I got the butter chai and it was very tasty, but a little rich. I also got the cardamom bun which was a win in my books. The only reason I docked a star was more because of my personal preference. I got the fruit tart and was very excited to eat it because it looks gorgeous! Unfortunately it had a weird earthy minty flavor. That could be down to personal preference, but I've never had a fruit tart that tastes like that. Over all I still think it is a great place to try if you're in town. I went with two friends and they both enjoyed their coffee and pastries. Beautiful outdoor seating as well as a little indoor seating.

Julie S.

Yelp
Omg a must!!!! The pastry chefs are amazing. Coffee so good and staff super!!! I am blown away as to how good ! We will be back. It was a great way to end the birthday weekend.

Joe R.

Yelp
Had Owl Bakery the first time yesterday as a pick-me-up gift and it was the strawberry danish. Needless to say, I just got 4 more today. Absolutely delicious danish, super fluffy pastry and flavor throughout, not just all packed in the center. The cashier was super sweet and not at all bothered by us showing up just minutes before close, we love her! Small building on the outside but seems surprisingly spacious on the inside. I'll have these danishes polished off before I even get home

Rebecca K.

Yelp
OWL came up as a highly recommended bakery, so we definitely wanted to stop in during our Asheville trip. We made our way on a rainy Sunday afternoon, and not overly surprisingly, there was a decent line but it was all contained inside and went by quickly. The bakery is fairly small inside, but there is a decent amount of seating and room to wait for your order. The server was very kind and helpful, and the workers were quite efficient to keep the line moving. My husband and I both started with drip coffee, which was standard but good (I always appreciate having oat milk as an option). For eats, I went with the almond rose croissant, and my husband opted for the ham and cheese croissant. We both really enjoyed ours (I have more of sweet tooth, so I preferred my selection), each commenting on the flakiness of the dough and the perfect ratio of butter. We snagged a loaf of day-old bread to take home with us for a discounted price, which was a nice bonus to continue the enjoyment! OWL Bakery was a cute, delicious, and relatively quick breakfast stop, and I would highly recommend them for anyone looking for a quality bakery. Prices are somewhat high, but to be expected for the quality!

Johnny B.

Yelp
Talk about price gauging! wow. I travel extensively here and abroad, enjoying sweets all along the way.. This place must thrive on reputation. yes, the treats are good, but not extraordinary. but the prices? laughable. There are many other options in Ashville to get sweet treats at half the price and just as good. SMH

Tiff H.

Yelp
OWL Bakery is a must when you're in Asheville! It's a cute little house where you can place your order for pickup online or at the window. Be sure to check the hours before you go, since we were sorely disappointed on our most recent trip that they were closed Mondays. The selection was limited since it was later in the Sunday morning (aka peak) so I got what I could - an iced oat milk latte (bc first things first, caffeine) and pasteis de nata and guava pastelito for the road. Everything was tasty - I just regretted not getting more and also not eating it while it was fresh. OWL Bakery is definitely on the top of my list for my next Asheville visit!

Misti M.

Yelp
Right off of Charlotte Rd in North Asheville OWL Bakery sits next to an ice cream shop (what could be better than a bakery and an icecream shop together!?!?), there is limited parking but walkability / public transit are very accessible. There is a bit of outdoor seating, a small seating bar that faces the windows, and about 5 or so tables (2-tops) inside. Two of us went on a Sunday morning to try one of the beautiful items we saw on the website. We settled on a strawberry tart, which was a work of art! There was floral decoration and edible glitter covering a tart with plenty of strawberries. It was beautiful! Price came to about $7.50, so it was a bit steeper than I expected, but it was clearly made by a talented pastry chef, so I get it. The other menu options (that I didn't dive into) included several bread options - daily offerings + specific daily specials. All looked amazing! There were plenty of coffee options and about 8 tea options to choose from on the menu. I'm sure I'll be back for a croissant soon!

Gabrielle Z.

Yelp
I am obsessed. Came here on recommendation from an extraordinary baker friend and I was even more blown away than I thought I'd be. The pastries were fresh, flaky when they needed to be, flavorful, and just downright delicious. You'll definitely wait in line here, but that just means you can make it all worth it by ordering a box of a ton of different pastries. The daily danish is a must get, along with any of the other flaky pastries! There's also coffee and tea available and I must say the Buttered Chai was out of this world! This is definitely my new go-to spot.

Ben S.

Yelp
Incredible bakery in Ashevile that we patroned twice during our visit. Their offerings are so fun, unique and delicious. I wanted to order every item on the menu both times but had to hold myself back. Truly outstanding baking and service, and we enjoyed eating in their small dining room - not a lot of tables but the turnover is quick. My only critique is the coffee - it was good but not the best I've ever had. But who cares, go for the baked goods and thank me later!

AJ D.

Yelp
Yum yummy & yummiest! Incredible variety of delicious sweet &/ savory pastries. Must try: Small place but we found a seat. Delicious coffee. Great local & transient (us) crowd.

John A.

Yelp
This just isn't fair that Asheville has both OWL Bakery and Hole Donuts. I bought 2 breads whole wheat Sourdough seedy and a Raisin Anise loaf both are excellent The raisin has a little citrus element in the dough too. Both toast delightfully. I also purchased a slice of quiche, a strawberry Danish and, a Strawberry tart each was topped with perfectly ripe slices of fresh strawberries. The Danish was light, delicious croissant like pastry and just the right amount of crème filling. The tart was amazing and so sinfully good what made it special was the delicate fresh thyme flowers that added an elevated element of sophistication, so good. The quiche was an eggy, buttery, cheese slice of perfection served warm. The staff were very welcoming, efficient and friendly. The space is huge but it has seating for a few patrons and nook or two for those you which to enjoy a cup and conversation with a friend. Street parking only. DANGER BONUS at this location Hole donuts is just a 3 minute walk away.

Connie L.

Yelp
Almond croissant, lemon curd tart, cardamom bun all 10/10! Cardamom bun had tons of flavor and soooo moist inside Almond croissant texture was sooo good and lots of filling inside Sat outside with the dogs and enjoyed the fall leaves

Vicky F.

Yelp
Pastries were delicious and everyone's friendly. However the drinks can usually take 15min+ and it's not the barista's fault, they should staff more barista than cashiers/other positions when they were all standing around looking at her while the only person who's making 6 drinks is doing all the work.

Kathie K.

Yelp
This is absolutely amazing bread! Delicious and healthy, very much like the bread we ate when we lived in Germany. We love seeded bread, and your bread is perfect. I wish you all the best in your business!

Michael D.

Yelp
One of the best bakeries in town. Two perfect locations. Such little time to consume all the goods. However, one should try.

Celina D.

Yelp
Coffee was terrible. Pastries were very average not worth all the hype. Not enough seating.

Paton D.

Yelp
If you want to be gaslit while eating overpriced, cold eggs and pastries - come here. Who serves cold quiche without offering to heat it up, or being "willing" to after we brought it back and nicely asked for them to be warmed after spending nearly $30 on pastries. We were made to feel like an inconvenience from the moment we walked in, and the dude with the nose ring behind the counter was beyond rude throughout the whole experience. We also said we wanted to dine in, and instead of giving us plates, he put them in a to go box and said he'd give us two plates instead of plating them together, while overstating how many pastries we had. It was a waste of a box as we ate them all like we said we would when questioned for some reason.

Alexis R.

Yelp
Such a cute little bakery in the West End of Asheville! We tried several pastries (a sweet and savory each) and from their espresso menu. It was a busy place but we were served very quickly and though it was a wait for our coffee drinks they were made extremely well!

Richard N.

Yelp
- espresso drinks: have no soul, a whisper of coffee taste - croissants: chocolate is gross and waxy local stuff, and not a fan of rose almond paste - cardamom morning bun: YUM! Should have bought three You pick up from the window facing the street but need to walk into a corridor to find the window for ordering. We almost walked past it!

Troy C.

Yelp
Real deal great bakery. Full levain breads that are just right. Crust is great. Crumb is great. Flavor is great. Today we had the baguette, farmhouse, and brioche buns. Everything delicious. Service was fast, helpful, and very friendly. Great shop in a nice neighborhood.

Natasha A.

Yelp
Hands down the best croissant I've ever had, and while I have yet to have one in France, I've been to several amazing bakeries with great croissants across the Americas, and none has surpassed OWL's. All their breads and pastries are quite delectable, and the staff has always been great, even when there's a huge line. They also have good quality coffee and tea, which you can't say about every bakery.

Hannah S.

Yelp
I recently got to try Owl bakery while on a long weekend trip to Asheville and immediately fell in love. The cute little building is so inviting and when you walk up, you get in line to order around back because the inside was closed which might be something that came out of the pandemic and it just worked better for them, not sure. The options were delicious but they were selling out quick, as a reference, we got there around 9:30 am on a Saturday so plan to get there early! They had a great little shared patio in the back with lots of tree coverage, such a nice and relaxing way to start your morning.

Terry K.

Yelp
Wonderful homemade pastries and pleasant outdoor seating. Perfect for a morning coffee break!

Natalie M.

Yelp
Just wow!! The savory and sweet danishes are perfect. As beautiful as they are delicious.

Sydney S.

Yelp
Amazing coffee and pastries! They have bread and wine to-go and amazing seating indoors and outdoors behind the building in a cute shady garden space (west Asheville location). A recent review says it's overpriced but that's untrue. We're living in 2023 where rent is expensive af and small businesses are struggling - the pricing is fair for the quality they are providing. This place is loved by locals and tourists alike!! Come visit!

Jojo B.

Yelp
This bakery ruins other bakeries! We live in NYC and are very snobby when it comes to baked goods. OWL gives bakeries like Fabrique, Supermoon, Otway, Win Son, and even fabulous bakeries in France a run for their money!!! Couldn't believe the display when we walked inside, so many options it was hard to choose because you can only eat so much. The morning buns, cardamom buns, pasteles de nata, madelines, and the strüdel! Oh my!!! OWL would be a sole reason for us to return to Asheville!

Suzanne S.

Yelp
Incredible pastries and good coffee . It's such a cute little store too. Seating outside .

Claudine F.

Yelp
Overpriced. Employees not welcoming. Poor customer service. High prices expect more from employees to be more accommodating to the customer. Example bought 2 pastries then asked could I get the box special employee refused. Ambiance unremarkable.

Jenine D.

Yelp
Quiche 2 plain croissants 2 chocolate cro 4 Portuguese Tarts Bill $77.00 - overpriced The pastries were good but there's no justification for the over inflated prices

Swarna M.

Yelp
Delicious, fresh and original pastries! I thought it lived up to the hype. Drove to West Asheville on our way to Biltmore estate, found easy street parking right out front. No real parking lot. Nice coffee menu and pastries all displayed in the case-what you see, is what is available. Our party of 3 had a morning bun, chocolate croissant and a danish with House made blood orange marmalade. I also got a cardamom bun to go. Mouthwatering and yummy! Light and flaky croissant, nothing dense or heavy. All the coffee drinks made fresh, all milk varieties available also. I had a freshly made chai that was hot and perfectly spiced. Nice outdoor seating in the sun! Will definitely return another day during my stay here in Asheville.

Courtney D.

Yelp
Owl bakery is the best bakery in Asheville, hands down. The custom service is amazing. They're very covid conscious which is a huge plus for those of us who are vulnerable. Their treats are otherworldly. And they always have a gluten free option that is just as good, or even better, as the gluten options! We love owl bakery!

Carla S.

Yelp
Excellent pastries and staff that are kind and accommodating! There is never a rush and if you are fortunate you may even score a day old loaf of one if their specialty breads. I got the chocolate, dried cherry, and walnut bread and it was yummy.
