Bay Area-Based Food Delivery Startup Food Rocket Is Relocating to North Carolina | Eater SF

"I saw that Oy Gluten Free Baking Company, from the team behind Los Gatos’ Polenteria, announced on Instagram on February 16 that it has already outgrown its relatively new location and will move just down the street to serve Equator coffee alongside its celiac-safe pastries, with a projected opening date of March 5." - Paolo Bicchieri

I had an issue with an order on 8/23 and requested a refund of $135. I only received a refund of $110. I will gladly take this review down when I receive the additional $25 refund. I emailed the owner/management in trying to get resolution on my issues and only got partial resolution. What I will say is that the comment by another reviewer that their product is “wildly inconsistent” is completely valid. I ordered 3 cakes three weeks in a row. The first cake on 8/16 was spot-on and perfect. No issues. The second cake on 8/23 was supposed to be 8” but they tried to give me a 6” cake because they accidentally made the wrong size. They also forgot to make the cake and didn’t have it ready until just 2 hours before my party. I ended up accepting an alternate cake that was less value. I paid $110 for an $85 cake and I want a refund for $25. I cancelled my order for 8/30 after this ordeal and did get a refund for the final cake. I’m not trying to say I should pay $0 for the 8/23 cake, I just want a refund for the difference in value of the actual goods received. This is reasonable. Picture so you can see the disaster they ended up giving me on 8/23. My partner says I should ask for the entire $110 back since we didn’t get the vegan cake we ordered but again… I’m trying to be reasonable here. Dealing with re-decorating this cake an hour before my baby shower was definitely not the highlight of my celebration.

Google
I got a blueberry muffin and it was one of the best blueberry muffin I’ve ever had. I’d recommend to go early because they do sell quickly and it’s part of a restaurant so the bakery section is small.

Google
Stopped in on a Monday morning for snacks and focaccia - yum! The cinnamon roll is a star and doesn't have the grainy texture of so many non-wheat baked goods. It's spongy and cinnamon-y in the best way. Loved the atmosphere and wished we'd had time for a coffee drink and some reading - seating inside and out.

Google
I loved baked goods, but as a celiac, my options are very limited. And GF baked goods are often heavy/stodgy/greasy. However, OY! has managed to do it really well - a celiac-safe uncompromisingly tasty bakery! I made a small detour to try this place and was not disappointed. Tucked away in a little cul de sac of N. Santa Cruz Ave, there was not a huge variety of savoury items, but plenty of sweet. We tried the cinnamon coffee cake which was perhaps my favorite. A nice crisp outside with cinnamon sugar on top, and a vein of cinnamon sugar through the middle of the cake. The bottom was a little crusted with some of it cooked which was a nice addition. The cake itself was firm, but airy and light - not at all crumbly. Will return for this one! We also tried the flourless chocolate cake. A nice crust on the outside, and very fudgy on the inside. It was good, but a little rich for my taste. The raspberry blondie was also good. Not too sweet, and with plenty of fruit in the middle. Like the chocolate cake, it was very moist - I think these would be great with a blob of cream or ice cream as a dessert! The small cheesecake was sweet, but fluffy not too dense. The crust was a little too sweet for me, and I think slightly caramelized in the cooking, so it was an interestingly moist/crisp/caramel note to each mouthful. I’m really looking forward to trying the breads and savoury items. So very glad that there’s such a good GF bakery in the South Bay!

Google
I stopped here this morning just to get some GF food. I have never been here before and heard about it from a coworker and wanted to try it. The bakery is inside of the Polenteria restaurant (see pic for guidance to the entrance). The closest parking is the lot surrounding Victory Lane. I was able to find a spot when I arrived around 11 am Thursday even though it was fairly full. I checked the restaurants menu when I got home and found out it had an 'entire gluten free Italian menu'. Now I have to go back for dinner sometime. I got a 3 pack of Jalapeno bagels for $12, 2 large cookies at $5 each, and a brownie for $9. It was pricier than another GF bakery I had recently visited in another town.

Google
LOVE this gluten free bakery! ❤️ Their Coffee Cake is to die for! Love the English muffins and banana bread too! I'm sure everything is delicious, I just haven't had a chance to try it all yet. One negative is that their opening hours are not consistent with what Google maps says. I've shown up more than once and they were unexpectedly closed. 😕 They've now changed location and reduced their days to three days a week. Sad to see my favorite GF bakery become so inaccessible.

Sonia K.

Google
Always on the lookout for gluten free baked goods so happy to see this open up. More gluten free options in the South Bay! Got the vanilla muffin and chocolate chip scone. Really delicious! Nice texture, seemed very fresh. Excited to give their parent restaurant down the street a try some time soon.

Google
I came across this place through Google maps and curiosity set it. Personally I don’t really enjoy gluten free pastries but this place was amazing! I was not disappointed. Keep in mind they recently changed their location to next door. Their selection of bread was pretty small but they still had a few savory and sweet breads. I got a pesto bun, as well as a peanut butter cookie. I asked them what ingredients they were using for the bread and they mentioned they used a potato flour and non gluten flours. I never knew you could make bread with those! The bread itself was delicious and had a fluffy texture just like regular bread. The cookie was chewy and with tons of flavor. My hope is that next time I come back they have a larger selection of breads.

Maria C.

Yelp
My second visit to their bakery. I tried their mini lemon loaf, coffee cake, and brioche loaf. The lemon loaf was tasty. A bit denser and drier than I'd hoped for but the flavor was good. Reminded me of the flavor of Angel food cake. Coffee cake was fine. Tasty, again a bit dense texturally. Large portion size. Tbh I wish their cakes and muffins were a more standard size. They're all quite large - larger than feels practical or desirable for a single serving, and awkward for splitting/sharing. But the brioche loaf, oh my god! Perfection. Soft, pillowy, delicious perfection. I have been steadily snacking on it for 4 days it's one of, if not the best, gf bread I've ever eaten. The brioche is truly a marvel. If you get nothing else, get this.

Yelp
Price is a bit steep as are all gluten free bakeries, but was worth it. We were surprised to find they had a table set up outside and that was basically the storefront where they displayed what was available for the day. We got a bagel and a focaccia. Both had really good texture for GF. Usually we find GF bakery items to be a bit more dense and dry, but these were soft and airy! The lady behind the table was also extremely nice and helpful to answer all of our questions since it was our first time. For the service and quality of the food, we would come back again.

Yelp
Loraina was our server this Sunday. She was pleasant, fun and accommodating. The Brunch was great! The coffee with real Cream, Yummy! They have a special bell that can be rung, but you have to go there and find out how you get a chance to ring that bell?? The dining area is quite small, but very quaint, clean and inviting. We personally don't have any gluten or allergy restrictions but a friend of ours introduced us to the gluten-free bakery and that's how we discovered OY. Will be back. There's a lot of things on the menu. We wanna try.

Yelp
Tara is amazing and what a bakery it is!! I love all of the gluten free treats. They have focaccia, brioche and lots of yummy pastries! They make brioche donuts. It's set back from the street on Santa Cruz Ave. It's so cute in here on Mother's Day.

Yelp
I've avoided giving this review in hopes that they'd get their act together but that hasn't happened. I've been a customer here since their soft opening days a couple years ago and have had horrible experiences ever since. During that time, I preordered cinnamon rolls for Thanksgiving morning. Upon arrival for pick up, they tell me they've accidentally given away the icing for my cinnamon rolls, which is like the most important part. Being a holiday, I'm now in a bind. Wanting to give them another try, I preordered a custom cake for a friend's engagement party. Upon arriving for pickup, they tell me they don't have a box for the cake and I'll have to carry it out without one. I tell them this is unacceptable and they say, "Well, we shouldn't have taken this order to begin with." That's not my problem. You did take the order and my money. The baker shows up, reeking of weed, and then offers to go buy a box for the cake. It was delicious but boy, what an ordeal. I could go on but overall, the service is hit or miss, but usually a miss. They are inconsistent with their offering, even when they've communicated what will be offered on which days. So, you show up only to find they don't have what they say they will have. And that happens more often than not. This lack of commitment even extends to the farmers market. When Forest and Flour left the Los Gatos Farmers Market, OY! took their spot only to stop showing up on Sunday's without letting anyone know. And by anyone I mean the market manager. When I came in to ask why they've stopped coming to the market, they said, "Oh, it's just too hard." I've really hoped for the best with this place but we vote with our dollars and I'm no longer willing to support this bakery or this owner.

Yelp
Wow!! The best gluten free bread I have ever had. The focaccia was so delicious and I used it to make eggs Benedict after. The staff was very kind and helped me pick out what to get. The oat cran cookie was also sooo good! I still have one pastry in my fridge that I'm saving. We also got an americano and latte which was delicious! The interior was quaint but they did tell me they're combining with Polenteria in October, so the ambiance will change.

Yelp
The pastries and the coffee here are amazing! These had to be the best gluten free bakery I have been to. The coffee was great too and they have dairy free options. It's a cute little restaurant inside, but the best part is the staff! I've never felt more welcome than when me and my friend went here and spoke with the barista. Even for it being so early in the morning we were very impressed. I would 100 percent come back here when I'm in town.

Yelp
Such a cute bakery to stop by for a coffee or pastry! The worker there kindly told us that everything is gluten, soy, and nut free except for 2 things (except the berry blondie and peanut cookie/cake, which both have nuts). They also have some dairy free and vegan options. Despite these recipe alterations, the pastries did not disappoint. I tried the berry blondie and it was a perfect balance of sweet and tart. The brownie was nice and moist, and the berries balanced the sweetness. Definitely would wanna come back!

Yelp
Love having a safe zone to eat! It's always fascinating to me to be able to eat anything on the menu and not have to verify that it's safe with the staff (and hope they know what gluten means!) We came in on a Saturday morning for brunch - we sat in the cozy restaurant and looked over the menu. The menu is on the smaller side, was hoping for a waffle or pancakes, but instead had country breakfast, avocado toast, bruschetta and a few other options. They were out of the avocado toast so we ended up with 2 country breakfasts and one bruschetta plus a flat white. Country breakfast was tasty - served with a biscuit, but no butter or jam was offered. The Bruschetta was super tasty and the potatoes were amazing (way too much red bell pepper for me but that is because that is one veggie I can not stand!) The service was great, the staff were all so friendly and space was cozy and so cute. I did grab some treats on the way out - 'beignets" - they were more like a solid donut to me, but so so yummy! I even shared with my kids - not sure they appreciated it but they said they were really good! The cinnamon roll was really tasty, the cinnamon coffee cake muffin was ginormous and i split between 2 breakfasts with coffee - heated up a little and were devine Will be back for brunch and mimosas next!!

Yelp
I'm giving this place 4 stars bc it's awesome that it's GF! We need more GF spots like this. I wouldn't say it's the best GF bakery I've been to though. I definitely enjoyed it, but it lacked the finesse I've experienced elsewhere. Would I go again? Probably!
google avatar

Farhana M.

Yelp
Came in before 10AM on a Saturday and there wasn't many treats left! This place opens at 9. I got the chocolate glazed "donut" and it's just a brioche bun, not in donut shape. Didn't like their latte, it was overly bitter and a bit too much foam for a latte. Maybe the barista mixed up the other customer's order, who got a cappochino.

Ronnie B.

Yelp
I want to try this place and keep giving it a chance. In 6 months, I've gone 3x during their posted business hours and have not yet found them open. I've gone on weds, sat and sun. When I went on a weds, they had a sign up saying they were now closed on Wednesdays and would be open again Thursday but the hours online had not been updated. When I went on a sunday they had a sign saying they were at their booth at the farmers market but they were not at their farmers market, I walked it twice just to make sure. Very disappointing since it sounds like they make a good variety of gf goods. If in fact they exist.
google avatar

Yelp
Place has some amazing items that are completely gluten free: Bagels Coffee cake Focaccia White bread So so probably wouldn't order: Pizza roll The staff probably need a bit more training, need help with like how to wrap the bread up and package pastries. Otherwise this place is amazing!
google avatar

Yelp
This is a rating for the baked goods that I got after a brunch at Polenteria. My muffin and so-called Blondie were seven dollars each respectively. What I found with the muffin is that it had very little taste and absolutely no blueberries inside it. The texture was pretty good, but it honestly tasted more like cake than a muffin. The Blondie also tasted like cake. It was very hard to distinguish between them and I've definitely had better baked goods.

David B.

Yelp
We were very excited to get a gluten free cake from here. Unfortunately, they did not follow the order instructions, sealed the box so we were unaware that we got the wrong thing until we presented it at the birthday party. Beyond that, the cake was incredibly dry which was a huge disappointment.

Yelp
I just recently discovered this gluten-free bakery and I'm glad I did. I live over in Santa Cruz and pass through LG frequently. My daughter and I really enjoyed our pastries (SO fluffy!) and the Rosemary focaccia is MONEY. My partner and I toasted a piece later and my goodness -- taste bud heaven. I've never had a gluten-free focaccia before (and I've been GF for nearly a decade). Well done OY and yes, I highly recommend! Can't wait to go back.
google avatar

Rachel O.

Yelp
Such phenomenal GF pastries! So delicious! Inside Polenteria restaurant! Any wait to go back!
google avatar

Heather S.

Yelp
LIFE CHANGING! The focaccia, the cinnamon rolls, the salads -- everything I've tried here is truly INCREDIBLE! I have Celiac, and I cannot even tell you the amount of joy OY! Bakery brings me... I can't even put into words how amazing everything is. Even my gluten-eating friends are in love!!!
google avatar

Catherine G.

Yelp
Focaccia bread and flourless chocolate muffin/cake were to DIE FOR. I'm having a friend who lives super close get some for me since I live in SF. Highly recommend! I have no photos cause I ate it all.
google avatar

Branden S.

Yelp
Co-worker picked up some cinnamon rolls and the bacon donut for us to try and I was incredibly surprised they were gluten-free! I decided to go back, but unfortunately, they were out of cinnamon rolls so I tried something different and got the sausage pizza roll with hot honey and honestly, you wouldn't even be able to tell its gluten-free! It was so soft, savory and umami. If you're gluten-free and are wanting to try some good bakery/pastry options, you need to try this place!
google avatar

Trudy M.

Yelp
Pleasantly surprised to have a glorious Gluten free bakery. Bonus: dairy free items as well. My daughter is df & gf. We usually travel wide & far for such establishments. This bakery is closer to home. Thank you!!! We went a little crazy and ordered too many items (haha!). Ordered: glaze doughnut with bacon ** Coffee cakes (gf/df)** Focaccia bread (gf/df) Banana bread (gf/df) Some cookies My ultimate favorite was the peanut butter cookie!!! They had gf chocolate cupcake samples-going back for that too! Visited last Friday- it's currently Tuesday and our baked goods are STILL amazing. Can't wait to visit often. This place will be in rotation (wink!) Haha!
google avatar

Kristine L.

Yelp
So I just stopped by to get some delicious focaccia bread and the store is closed. Counter and furniture is gone. Closed permanently?? No note on door and phone call does not connect

Susanna Z.

Yelp
The sourdough teff bread is excellent but very expensive ($15)! Sometimes, you have to call ahead an reserve your bread because the bakery runs out. The location has moved and is now inside of the Polentaria restaurant that has no sign! I don't know why there is no sign for the restaurant. I had walked past it for years and had no idea it existed. You enter from the parking lot, near the backdoor of Pizza My Heart.

Brittney W.

Yelp
I waited for 30 minutes for them to open like their yelp and google listing said... nobody ever showed up. Looks like they aren't actually open on thursdays. Please update your listing so you don't waste peoples precious time.
google avatar

Amber B.

Yelp
I've been gluten-free for over 15 years. These are the best bakery goods that I have ever experienced!
google avatar

Chelsey K.

Yelp
Iced chai latte SO good! Bakery items are really good and taste healthy Feels good in the tummy
google avatar

S K.

Yelp
Both times I visited this bakery I just had to order a handful. Everything is soooo goooood!! There is a variety of baked goods and everything I've tried so far exceeded my expectations. I think it was the owner who was working there both times and he is super sweet and very helpful. 10/10 would highly recommend! *EDIT: I read reviews complaining about their hours not being accurate! They do close early if/when they sell out. It's best to look them up on Instagram because they post when they close early and days off.*
google avatar

Jodi N.

Yelp
Very good gluten-free bakery really really enjoy the restaurant atmosphere they recently moved back. The little mini chocolate loaf cakes with the peanut butter frosting are outstanding. Lovely Staff that works there. I really enjoy my visits.
google avatar

Manuel Y.

Yelp
Excellent variety of baked goods: breads and pastries Quality is superb. FYI...on weekends they run out of stuff early
google avatar

Brylle L.

Yelp
It's a bit pricey but there aren't too many dedicated gluten free bakeries in the Bay Area and this might be the best one. Their pastries are delicious and the people who work there are super friendly!
google avatar

Cassandra M.

Yelp
The chocolate chip cookie is so amazing. The actual cookie bake is buttery, soft, just the right amount of chew, and quite delicious. On this sleepy Sunday, the coffee is flavorful, and you will enjoy the ambiance. The service team was friendly, eager to help and the cute bakery is super clean. Go there!!!

Joshua M.

Yelp
Found a fingernail in the cheese of the square pizzas they sell. Absolutely nasty and unacceptable, I will never come back.

Carolyn A.

Yelp
Ordered cupcakes from this bakery and they were delicious. When I picked them up, I got to meet the owner, Yvonne. A lovely young lady and very gracious. The cupcakes did not have any decorations, so her helper rushed to get some sprinkles for them. That's service. Carolyn A.

Cathy F.

Yelp
Hopefully this is updating my 10/12 reviiew. Oy! has solved their baked goods issue for the most part, with most unwrapped goods now behind plexiglass and I am once again buying goodies for my family member who has a flour intolerance My go-tos are peanut butter cookies and snickerdoodles. The only reason I am not giving 5 stars is because there is some inconsistency from baker to baker/batch to batch, although the family always seems to enjoy them (though I buy them for the one person who can't have flour, everyone in the family eats and enjoys them). lol I won't park my shiny new car in their crowded lot, but on a nice day it is pleasant to stroll through Los Gatos to get there
google avatar

Kasi M.

Yelp
I got these two babies. I really loved the muffin, but didn't like the lemon bar at all :(

Brenda V.

Yelp
I didn't realize that this bakery was only about 15 minutes from my house. Amazingly her bread is very soft and very good . We know gluten-free Products sometimes don't mimic the real thing. But this is very close.
google avatar

Michael F.

Yelp
Super friendly staff. My partner l, who is gluten sensitive cried when she saw the selection.

Stephanie S.

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place since I can't eat gluten and love to try baked goods that are gluten-free. I've purchased a few items at various times, and they all have a sort of dry, unappealing texture. Every time I have been sort of disappointed. Not sure what type of flours they use but seems too starchy for my liking (too much tapioca starch??).

Amanda L.

Yelp
This place is so good! I am gluten free and dairy free and was able to find some really good treats. The banana bread, coffee cake, and a lot of the breads are gf and df. The coffee cake is amazing and still tastes great days later. The focaccia bread is soft, moist, and very flavorful... the best gluten free bread I have had. We also got the bacon donut and cookies, which my parents enjoyed.
google avatar

pam r.

Yelp
Was very happy to have a gluten free bakery in Los Gatos. I was hoping there would also be some dairy free options to but found only one. Los Altos has a bakery that offers many sweet options that are both gf and df. I hope with time more dairy free options are offered.
google avatar

Yelp
Met the baker Oliver (?) and he's lovely. He cares deeply that his baked goods be excellent and he strives to "fool" people. To surprise people that it's gluten free and I think he succeeds. The zucchini bread is superb and the icing on it is a nice touch. Almost seems like a lemon drizzle. The cream cheese chocolate cupcakes and tea cake are amazing. The cupcake is moist and rich and very chocolate-y. The tea cake is light and reminds me of high tea. My buddy loves their brownies and they're huge. Can't wait to try everything!

Yelp
Many years ago, I was watching The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. He did a segment he called "Jay Walking," in which he would go out to the streets of Los Angeles and ask random people a question. On this particular episode, he would ask if it was important to the person to eat gluten-free food. May emphatically said, "Yes!" He would then ask, "What, exactly, is gluten?" Most people were unable to answer his question. They simply did not know. Nor do I! -- What I do know is that there is a hidden gem in downtown Los Gatos called Oy! Gluten-Free Bakery. The environment is welcoming and clean. The service is over-the-top good. And the food items served there are delicious, and gluten-free. I had a cinnamon muffin and a cup of hot chocolate made with oat milk. Both were superb. Tara and Sarah, the two employees working on the Saturday morning of my visit, were personable, conversational, and genuinely nice people. It was an absolute joy to sit inside on a rainy morning and enjoy good food and conversation.

Yelp
Great location in LG. Beautiful bread selections. I tried the pizza roll and it was delicious!

Yelp
Brand new completely gluten free bakery in Los Gatos. Part of the newly opened all gluten free restaurant, Polenteria, also in Los Gatos. Sweet and savory options. Limited opening hours. Check out their IG account for details: @oy_glutenfreebakingcompany_

Yelp
Very cute little bakery with coffee service available on the side. All the bakery are gluten free - great news for those who are on gluten free diet and still get to enjoy delicious bread or bakery with no worries
google avatar

Yelp
Best gluten free bakery around. Always taste fresh and has a good variety. The employees are very friendly
google avatar

Jill R.

Yelp
I love this place, it is hands down the best gluten free and dairy free focaccia bread I've ever had. They do not make too many items that are both gluten and dairy free. I'm so happy they have a few items each time I go in there!
google avatar

Charlee T.

Yelp
I have been to Oy! many times. Their bread is so moist and tastes great. The donuts were super yummy. However, every time I stopped by, I didn't really feel like they appreciated my business. Staff sometimes said hi and other times just looked at me as I walked inside. I had to initiate the greeting. Being the only GF place in town (as far as I know), I was hoping for a better vibe.
google avatar

Mary P.

Yelp
Twice I've purchased gluten free items here for family members who cannot eat gluten. They tell me that the food is delicious (and when I had a small taste, I thought so, too). The staff is super nice and helpful. Both times that I made a purchase there I did have some sticker shock. Maybe it would be just as high for the same items as at a regular bakery, but it hit me as very expensive for what I got.
