Celebrate Pride at New Orleans Gay Bars, LGBTQ-Owned Restaurants, and Queer-Friendly Spaces | Eater New Orleans

"All roads lead to Oz — except, in New Orleans, the yellow brick is swapped out for potholes with puddles of spilled sugary drinks, so watch those ruby slippers. Oz is the place to end up on a Saturday for the best dancing in New Orleans. The shirts come off the later the night gets. For those who aren’t into late nights, Oz hosts Drag Bingeaux on Sunday nights at 7 p.m., just one of its weekly events. See here for the full lineup." - Beth D’Addono

Such an amazing show! The girls were gorgeous and did their thing! The drinks were delicious and we had the lotus tea drink. Thank you for such a fun and wild time! Debbie with a D is fantastic and zephyr was gorgeous!

My wife and I went to this venue with great excitement to celebrate her birthday, expecting a safe and inclusive space for the LGBTQ+ community. Unfortunately, our experience was the opposite. When we arrived, we saw two adjacent doors with no clear signage. My wife walked through one (unaware it was supposedly the exit )and was aggressively grabbed by a male security guard, leaving visible marks on her arm. It was a completely unnecessary and disproportionate use of force. We are both petite women, physically non-threatening by any measure. We cannot understand the level of aggression my wife was subjected to, especially in a place that promotes itself as queer-friendly and safe. Though we had already paid for entry, we left immediately. The night was ruined, and my wife was visibly shaken. To say I'm disappointed is an understatement. I do not recommend this place. I feel deeply disappointed and let down, not only by the treatment we received but by the failure of this space to live up to its promise of safety and inclusion.

Incredible first time drag show, loved the ladies of Oz and intimate performance venue. Good service with no pressure to drink, festive crowd. Recommend arriving 15 minutes before the show. Wednesday nights on Bourbon for the win

I went to OZ last night for their comedy night for the first time, and my experience was a mixed bag. The first comedian started off so strong; I was really enjoying her energy. But then things took a nasty turn. She directed some pretty harsh comments toward one guy in the audience because he voted for Trump, saying she hoped his kids wouldn't come to Christmas and that he should get in a car accident. I couldn’t believe how nasty she spoke to him. I believe in voicing your 1st amendment and comedy that pushes boundaries, but there's a line. I believe in treating people with respect, no matter their political views or background. What really got to me was that it felt less like comedy and more like a personal attack. It's one thing to joke around, but this felt way too aggressive and out of place, especially in a gay club in New Orleans where inclusivity should be celebrated. It was disappointing to see someone use their platform to attack a complete stranger instead of finding common ground or simply making people laugh. I left with a sour taste in my mouth about the whole experience. I really hope future comedians remember that humor shouldn’t come at the expense of kindness.

Most entertaining however now everyones cut of tea. Crowd can be loud and not for people who are easily offended. Was there on a weekday and was crowded. There are few shows and dance off competition. I can understand some of the not so good reviews. However if you are open minded, your gonna have a good time here. Will definitely visit if i am in town again.

This has been my favorite gay bar/club in New Orleans since 2014! Amazing service, great music, multi-level facility with different areas to hang-out. Great drag performances and stiff drinks! bravo.

I absolutely love oz. The bartenders are so nice. Drag bingo on Sundays is super fun. Balcony for parade watching. 10/10 highly recommend.

I am a fifty year old woman who was traveling alone on vacation. I went through the scariest thing I have ever been through at this bar. I made the mistake of paying for my two drinks with a one hundred dollar bill. The bartender saw my money, and there were a lot of one hundred dollar bills folded up together. I didn't feel safe to keep my cash at the airbnb, because there was just a tiny doorknob lock anybody could break through. I never thought in a million years that I would be drugged in my drink so as to rob me of eight hundred dollars. It was the bartender. He and the security guard helped me to the door as I was unable to walk. One of the two of them robbed me, and i'm guessing it was the bartender who likely drugged my drink. This gay bar has been suffering in business because of the terror attack that happened here in new orleans. I don't know how much this affects the bartenders pay, but I'm guessing he does this to a lot of tourists who are traveling alone and paying in cash. Make sure if you go here that you use your credit card. There is an ongoing police investigation. Luckily I had a lot of details. Like the fact that I had not gone to any other bar. It was my first stop after leaving my airbnb. I woke up in the morning with very little memory of anything that happened after ten thirty at night. I can't tell you what it feels like to be victimized like this, and I was so incredibly nice to him and talked to him for at least thirty minutes when it was slow and I had just gotten there. BEWARE!!! I'm trying to reach the owner to give him all the details as well in hopes that this does not continue to innocent people. This is the Bartender BO and the bouncer who quickly swooped in when the drugs took affect, and walked me outside, took my cash, and put me in a strange car.

Yelp
I have been going to Oz to dance for 10 years and lately I feel like the music is not as fun as I remember. I was out with some friends who were in town visiting who also know Oz as a gay New Orleans staple, and everyone complained that the music at Oz was outdated - we don't want to hear Party Rock Anthem! Would love to see an update to the DJ'ing at Oz.

Yelp
I've passed this place several times on my trips to NOLA but have never been in. This time, we had a perfect reason and found it to be an amazing dance club. There is a cover per person, and once we got in, there was quite a wait for drinks as there were only 2 bartenders for the packed downstairs floor. Once we got our drinks, they were good enough but nothing spectacular. The gogo dancers were entertaining and really catered to everyone regardless of gender and it was fun having them dance and wink at everyone in your group. The dance floor was really where all the action was, super packed and with a great dj. There was also an upper floor and balcony, but we didn't make it up there. Overall, it was a fun club, and everyone had a great time. While I wouldn't come for the drinks, it's a great spot to dance after you've got a buzz going.

Yelp
Bartender ignored me for 20 mins and I only got a drink when he made another guys drink wrong. Karaoke was fun, until it was my groups turn to go and the clown of a bartender grabbed the mic (from my group of nonbinary friends) and sarcastically said "give it up for the white women". He made no comments to any other groups performing, only us. Of course nobody laughed. he cheaply apologized to just one of us. When I tried to talk to him about his generalization/cheap sense of humor he got aggressive, asked if I was "tryna be his momma" and told me to leave. The misogyny and lack of accountability was repulsive. don't worry sissy dear, we won't be returning

Scarlet E.

Yelp
This bar is for cis gay men. This is NOT a safe space for all queer people. I came to this bar with a group of queer/non-binary people and was utterly disappointed in how we were treated. My friends participated in karaoke night and were having so much fun! Immediately afterwards, however, the bartender (I believe the evening's host referred to him as Sissy-- tall blonde, white man with a receding hairline) left his position behind the bar, took the mic from my partner, and said "Thank you, white women!" Everyone in the group was either non-binary or trans. Visibly so, I must add. For context, many other femme-presenting, white individuals performed before us. In the entire hour or so we were there, the bartender did not say a word about another group. VERY disappointed & I do not recommend this bar for queer people who care about inclusivity.

jay

Yelp
If you are a femme, trans, or nonbinary person, I do not recommend going to this bar. You may be treated with hostility. Not a safe space for all queer people. Made me very sad.

Yelp
Had a great time!! Checked out a Sunday night drag show and it was so much fun!! Great vibe and the bartender served us quickly. If I ever come back to New Orleans I'm definitely going back... There was only one drawback... the toilet in one of the restrooms was completely jammed with toilet paper. And when I said jammed, I mean it was coming out of the top of the toilet so I had to head back to my hotel to use the bathroom... Thankfully it was only a few minutes away. I imagine that it's not like that all the time.. other than that the place was very clean.

Yelp
Sexism is alive and well. We are two queer women and went to this bar for a drag show. We got to the bar ahead of time and stood near the stage. Once the show started, we were told in a very rude way to move and we did so. If the staff wants you to stand in a specific place for the show, they should tell patrons that, especially if they have arrived early to get good spots. Very quickly upon that, a man behind me pushed me hard and called me a misogynist slur. I stood my ground and pushed him back. We were then forced out of the bar. The staff had zero interest in hearing what happened or removing the man who originally pushed me from the bar. If we had been men instead of queer women, I imagine it would have gone differently. Ultimately, I have never been to a gay bar that was so openly hostile to women before and I would certainly not recommend this to anyone.

Kerstin T.

Yelp
I had a great time at OZ. I played and won bingo and Danes on the stage with the boys. Jojo makes the best drinks and made me feel welcome.

Stacey C.

Yelp
This place is mismanaged. The music, decor, and vibe is all great, but these guys don't even have a working phone. You might not think that's a big deal, but IT IS IT. I am a tourist who lost my purse, along with my car keys and iPhone in this establishment, and because I've already flown back home, I can't just walk in and check the lost and found. I have managed and owned nightclubs for 22 years and helping customers recover lost property was a daily occurrence. I have never heard of a venue of this size and magnitude not having a working phone number. It's actually quite unfathomable. But hey, maybe they'll read this review and get their act together. I would really like to just get my property back too!

Yelp
A night out at Oz is the ultimate YMMV (#1) since no one evening is truly the same. One could argue this with just about any nightlife venue, but I've seen enough here that I can vouch for randomness that this place is subject to be. When they're on it, it's a slay worthy venue but when they're not, it's as drab and as cheesy as the rest of Bourbon St. The lighting is such that it's a virtual guarantee most pictures are going to be terrible. Speaking of terrible, the drinks feel like they're watered down and it takes several of them to even get me feeling anything. This doesn't negate the fact they're pricier than the average drink in the area and the bartenders are rarely the friendliest. Their saving grace is their performers. It depends on who they book, but some of the drag shows are fabulous. The dancers are mainly for eye candy and they love a little gratuity (#2) for their efforts. The music can get poppin at times and it's so loud in here that conversations often are shouting matches. Come for the entertainment, enjoy the dbaggery of the tourists, beware of be the restrooms. Unlike the dance floor, the lights are on. (#3) ____________ (#1) Your mileage may vary. Get wit it, Internet newb. (#2) Who doesn't? Oh right, the rest of the world. (#3) Thank goodness it's not a black light.

Yelp
I remember coming to New Orleans for the first time in 2019 for a work trip and I was actively looking for something queer to do walking down Bourbon St. I loved that this was located towards the end of all of the mess leading up to Canal. When I was last here, there was a very fun drag show going on during the week. I always had these memories of my random night out, but eventually forgot the name of this place until I came back this month for Southern Decadence. During my stay here, I found myself coming back to Oz because they had cheaper drinks compared to some of the other 'straight' places down the street. I always felt that the bar tenders knew how to pour a drink as well. The music was always pretty good as well. I would definitely recommend checking this spot out if you're visiting New Orleans. It's a great place for dancing and a variety of other different events.
google avatar

Lilac R.

Yelp
It was definitely...interesting? Unfortunately I did not stay for the drag show, but they have events happening every day basically that range from comedy to drag to stripping competitions and more. The bathrooms are a little fucked up though, given that one of them that has multiple urinals and the whole bathroom has only saloon doors to block the view and the stall has no door as well. It's basically completely open. There's another bathroom with a door that closes that fits one person but the door doesn't lock. The drink I got there was very good--it was apparently the signature drink of the bartender. About eight dollars. People and servers felt about what you should expect from a gay bar and were friendly, but not overly so. If you initiate conversation most would be happy to talk. It is a little quiet early in the evening if you like that type of vibe.

Yelp
This is by far the best experience I have had while on Bourbon St. Like most people this was our last stop before heading back for the night. I am glad that it ended up being our last stop because we stayed here the longest, had the most fun, and were able to relax. We were out for a night of relaxing while on an work trip and went as a group. We all made our way here and decided that it was a good choice to come here. As we were unwound at that point. Coming in we were a bit skeptical as there were not many people in here, but that allowed us to have the best time that night. It was almost like we had the place to ourselves. The drinks were superb and the staff were truly attentive. I almost left my card at the bar and before I knew the bartender was getting my attention to make sure I didn't leave it. When a friend and I stepped outside we chatted up the person at the door asking about what other establishments like this we could find nearby. They told us about all the LGBTQ+ businesses nearby and the gay friendly establishments to check out. It was nice to talk to someone that had all the insight for the area. It's not easy being able to know where to go. Other than that, we danced the night away as the drinks were flowing. The music was really good in here and our group definitely tore up the floor and took over a bit. We were all having such a great time. Definitely a great spot to check out if you do decide to give Bourbon St. a try.

Yelp
We ended up coming here two nights in a row - once when we caught the end of a drag show and again the following night when they had what was supposed to be some type of male review and dance competition, which ended up being 4 unathletic, out of shape guys dancing and performing various contests to try and be crowned the winner. Both nights we were here this place was full, not packed, the upstairs area was not open and drinks were reasonable. It was, um, interesting that there were no doors on the restroom and patrons watching the stage show could also easily turn around and watch the "show" in the restroom as patrons urinated in there if they were so inclined.
google avatar

Lateef A.

Yelp
Came here a few times during Southern Decadence. Place felt very hit or mess The sound system is outdated and the gain was pretty loud on the mic during the drag show. Drag: very engaging and the show was pretty good. Variety of music during the performances enough to engage everyone across different generations. Just the club: electronic music, not a lot of variety. Packed. Bathroom dirty. Bartenders, decently friendly. Solid 4/5. Toss up on whether I would return or not. But definitely not a bad experience.

Yelp
Good strong drinks with good prices. Loved the events while I was in town. Glad to have "family" in NOLA! Will be back for sure!!

Yelp
Very fun place to stop by if you're in Nola looking for an up beat place to have a good time!! Drag shows there are absolutely amazing the performers are always great!!! It is very loud in there. I will continue coming when I'm down on bourbon st!

David Q.

Yelp
I totally enjoyed my time here at OZ. Very open and welcoming. Great service and very friendly. Our bartender Josh is awesome, without a doubt, one of the friendliest people that I have ever encountered while visiting the French Quarter. I attended my first ever drag show here, WOW, I had one of the best nights out of my entire life. I truly hope more people are lucky enough to stop in and check it out, just like we did.

Kyra H.

Yelp
Went in with my friends today. We all ordered drinks and we stood in the corner and along the wall. A man pushed my friend (she stumbled back) and said "get the f*ck out of my way." We weren't in his way. It was crowded, it's Halloween, but my friend was standing against the wall. My other friend asked the man why he pushed her and he punched her in the face. Multiple bartenders and dancers saw the whole thing happen. He never got kicked out. This place is not safe for women.

Wally D.

Yelp
Went for karaoke on 11/20/2023 the DJ saying at least 15 songs allowing only a few customers to sing. The drag queen host with the flat boys chest lip synced men's songs on karaoke night. I think his name was comet the drag queen host. It was a horrible karaoke experience and I wouldn't suggest anyone go there unless they just want to drink and watch other people sing.
google avatar

Sophie B.

Yelp
What a great last night to end my time in New Orleans. The people that come here is what makes this place so fabulous! Had so much fun at karaoke night, the highlight of my trip! Just know that the bathroom doesn't lock, and the other bathroom you can see people doing their business.

Jay J.

Yelp
Went gay bar hopping here and it was pretty decent. Expect for that white, receding bald headed, 5'11ft, beer belly bartender that served me once. He didn't want to serve me and my friends for absolutely no reason. I asked for another round of drinks and refused, then turned my back on me. The only reason I can think of is that I didn't tip right away. I only tip when I'm done ordering my round of drinks. I didn't let that man ruin my night, I still came back and had fun.

Tina D.

Yelp
Had a blast we will come back. Our bartender Josh was great. Misty hosted bingo and was great. We won and hubby getting spanked then being able to spank the spanker it was great. We had a blast and will be back. The drag show was awesome!!! No complaints!!! The whole thing was awesome.
google avatar

Todd J.

Yelp
Had a great night until... I asked for a water and the bartender said no because I didn't tip well. I tipped 20% and he said no I didn't. He brought me someone else's bar tab to show me i tipped 50 cents, which wasn't mine. I said that's really rude to accuse someone of that. And he said sorry, my mistake but I don't have any cups for water...how rude.
google avatar

Kendrick R.

Yelp
5000 sardines packed into a can built for 10. Perhaps it was overly busy because of the Miss Universe event, but hardly any dancing could happen as it was literally shoulders touching shoulders. Also only had one bartender working upstairs, and it took 30 mins to get a drink. The sound system was also hit-and-miss - which made it hard to enjoy. New Orleans is known for pickpocketing, and we watched it happen at Oz. Guard your items closely if you go. Overall, a good place to go, but it could use some upgrades and more attention.
google avatar

Ethan B.

Yelp
This bar is definitely a fun establishment! I went after a great day at BUKU Fest and met some awesome people. They have some gogo/strippers on the bar. There was a $5 cover to enter, but it was worth it the bar was popping until almost 4 am. They do have an upstairs area and balcony which was nice and I am sure is great for performances that they host. Definitely will need to return here when I'm back in New Orleans next!

Km M.

Yelp
We accidentally entered this bar, unaware it was a gay bar. The bartender, Joshua, was friendly and all smiles. He chatted with us for a bit and charmed our whole party. We enjoyed the atmosphere so much we returned later and much to my surprise, they had a drag show. It was amazing. We had an awesome time and I recommend everyone go see it.

Yelp
Andy was the tits. We had a great time stopping in here for our bachelorette . We yukked it up - 10-10 would recommend

Yelp
Came to NOLA for Halloween weekend and spent every night at Oz. Such a fun time, amazing energy, and fun & friendly staff.

Dave L.

Yelp
Even is a very cool bartender. Great attitude and good drinks. He was happy to talk to the customers. Definitely recommend this bar and the bartender ever.

Yelp
Oz is just on the other side of barricades that separate Bourbon Street's bright lights and over-served tourists from the street's darker, emptier and somewhat more desolate section. As you may have figured out, it is a gay bar and often that means great music, dancing and even drag. Not so much at Oz. Our little group had to cross a wood ramp that covered a torn up walkway where we were greeted by a couple of hosts collecting a cover charge. It was earlier evening and Oz was fairly empty. I questioned the cover charge and was told nastily by one host that I could "go back to Metarie" which would be 'no loss" because I "probably didn't tip". The other host took our money, explaining the cover was being charged because they were in the middle of a show. We walked into a big square bar and off to the left there was a room with a stage. There was a mezzanine that overlooked the stage. We never passed this front area. We bought a round of reasonably priced drinks (and yes, we tipped) and went upstairs to watch the drag show from above. Sadly, it was not very good. The performers were more heart than talent, there was a lot of disorganization and even a few audio issues. The audience was very small and not very enthusiastic. We sipped our drinks and watched a couple of numbers and some banter between the emcee and a disembodied voice. It didn't take long to figure out we didn't belong in Oz and we followed the wood ramp back to Bourbon street.

Justin G.

Yelp
Establishment is not ADA accessible. No ramp provided for anyone looking to visit bound to a wheel chair.
google avatar

Ricky M.

Yelp
Blacklisted at the door. Of age , yet wanted water for a first drink. Terrible service thereafter.

Rodger M.

Yelp
Came to NOLA for a few days with friends. Oz is great especially Bartender Sam. She is so attentive to your needs. Tuesday night's show was excellent.

Jennifer W.

Yelp
Awful! Awful! Awful! If anyone at this establishment feels like you looked at them wrong, good luck! They will jump you! The staff, owners, and the pole dancers! If you might look like you have an attitude don't bother showing up here!
google avatar

Grace L.

Yelp
Another very exciting club to visit to watch male dancers on top of bar tables. Just wow! It was not that crowded when we went here so alot of attention to us to see this lovely guy dance. No cover charge needed. Just an open mind and a happy attitude. Be prepared to be entertained. There is a huge dance floor and a stage at this bar. The music that was being played was mostly contemporary dance party songs. Very fun! Totally enjoyed every risky moves and seeing others looking so well entertained!

Jess C.

Yelp
I always come to the drag shows cause I really like them. But the host persanaa or something is terrible. Shes really rude and feels like she dragsss the show out. The music after is so outdated, it's old music from the 80s and early 90s. They never play new music. They need to update alot.
google avatar

Jose R.

Yelp
Holy f7ck! What a difference! Just walked here from BP in hopes of a better experience. Bingo! Cameron, one of the bartenders, was busy but did not hesitate in acknowledging me right away. As soon as he had time he asked what I wanted to drink. Here things get better: $5.00 for the same overpriced drink at BP! And served with a smile!!! I should add, this place is twice as busy. Both bartenders have their regulars but still manage to keep an eye out for new patrons and to check on refills for others. Dear Oz management, keep doing what you're doing. In this industry it's all about customer service. Thank you for a favorable experience.
google avatar

Kristen R.

Yelp
I saw a lot of bad reviews so I wasn't sure what to expect. We had so much fun watching the show! Bar was quick, vibe was amazing. Definitely will go back.
google avatar

Kathleen D.

Yelp
We originally walked into Oz for a rest break thanks to its close proximity to shops on Saint Ann. Fast forward an hour and we were several shots deep thanks to Oz's ridiculously low prices (~$10 for 4 shots) and completely welcoming vibe. A couple nights later, we ended up back at Oz after a tour and happened upon a drag show. This was my first-ever drag show and it looked like everyone was having a great time, plus all of the performers were so good! Go, Adele! This is definitely a great spot on Bourbon to visit if you're looking for a fun, divey and low-cost bar.
google avatar

Charles C.

Yelp
This was a fun gay bar to check out. Unfortunately, I only visited this spot for a brief moment, and I believe it was before the "busy" times because it was not many people there. So I didn't get to see the "full experience." However, my drinks were prepared great, most of the bartenders were very personable, and the facility was clean and organized. I loved the upstairs with a balcony to people watch over Bourbon Street.

Corinne G.

Yelp
my wife and i went during the afternoon on a saturday. Andy was our bartender and he was the nicest cutest person! so sweet and attentive, and laughed @ all our dumb jokes. we're from california, and don't know if we'll ever be back this way, but of we do, it'll be for Andy!

Andrew J.

Yelp
Amazing staff, performers, bartenders and NEW MANAGERS!!! I give it 5 stars!!! A must for anyone visiting
google avatar

Sabine F.

Yelp
Oz is located on Bourbon Street. We went there twice while visiting New Orleans. It was our first time visiting this club, we had never seen a Drag Queen performance. It was a great show and very entertaining. The area is also much cleaner than the rest of Bourbon Street. Admission is free. The club is not suited for people who judge others because of their lifestyle.

Rob R.

Yelp
MY husband and I visiting from ft lauderdale for southern decadence partied here at OZ ONE WORD "CAMERON" !!!!!!! This gem of a bartender is OZ LaLa land for sure. He is the sexist STR8 bartender with a personality bigger than the world he lives in amazing smile excellent attitude towards EVERYONE!!! And a body of death and a cock of an Adonis a twenty is a twenty!!!!! Love this bar been here many times and he has always been THAT bartender everyone likes. CONGRATS OZ for this GEM of GODS creation, he is GORGEOUS!!! THANKS CAMERON!!!!!
google avatar

Amy R.

Yelp
Music was amazing however, now we get to service part..paying $60 for three rounds and different bartenders charge different prices. I specifically asked for absolute and got poured stoli. Bathrooms with no toilet paper or hand soap. Bathroom ceiling leaking and dripping water while at the hand sink. Not the oz I remember from a couple years ago. Are there new owners or something because you can definitely tell they don't care about the establishment. Very disappointing.
google avatar

Zander L.

Yelp
I had a great time here. Loved the music the strippers and the drinks. They're are many gay bars/clubs on bourbon st . But this is the one to be at. It was packed and everyone was having A great time. So much fun.

Jedidiah P.

Yelp
This was the worst bar I've ever been to. Everything about it was horrible. It was dirty, the music was outdated, the bathrooms were filthy, and the drinks were not made well. Most disappointing was my bartender. He was the worst bartender I've ever experienced in my life. He was so incredibly rude - he had an excessively poor attitude and was very bad at his job. Twice I asked to close my tab and he walked over to the bar, did nothing, and came back over to me to tell me that Oz did not have my credit card (in a very sarcastic and rude way). I trusted the bartender so I went on a wild goose chase of New Orleans tracing the places I was at before Oz trying to find my card. After about two hours of stressfully searching I went back to Oz and told the bartender that they must have it. He actually checked this time and they actually did have it the whole time. This place was disgusting.

Yelp
We had a whole laundry list of things to do in NOLA when we came to visit- drag show as one of them! Our group had just finished a tour and ate some food when my friend said " I am sad we havent seen a drag show since we got here" we looked up and #BOOM there was OZ. We decided to go in and they were having a drag show at that time. It did not disappoint! It was fairly crowded for the show- music was loud bartenders were so so looking, and somewhat attentive. Drink were on the pricier side- We ordered mostly shots of tequila but it was still near $50 for the 3 shots that we had ordered.

Yelp
Meh.... Things to consider: 1) the bartenders aren't the most attentive 2) straight girls have taken over (Seriously, it should be classified as a Gay Friendly Bar) 3) you pay a cover even when nobody is there 4) I think they clean and restock the restroom annually. Music is pretty good though.
