Where to Find Stand-Up Oyster Bars in New Orleans | Eater New Orleans

"I was struck by Sal Sunseri’s pride—he’s a vice president at P&J Oyster Company, the oldest oyster company in America—whose family-owned processing plant dates back to 1876 in the French Quarter; Sunseri says eating oysters in New Orleans is nostalgic, that standing to watch talented shuckers create their artwork is uniquely New Orleans, and he even shucks at his own stalls every week to taste the flavors he’s sending out into the retail world." - Beth D’Addono

Google
e oysters here are very affordable and excellent quality. The staff member who helped us over the phone was extremely kind. Even though my English is not very good, they patiently explained everything slowly and in detail. If you want to enjoy a lot of oysters, I highly recommend buying them here.

Google
Great experience! Most delicious oysters I had in Louisiana. Hints of garlic and truffle. Great friendly service! Go get them! You will love them!

Wandered in after an illicit fishing morning in Armstrong Park in September. Bought a pint of the freshest, plumpest, tastiest oysters we ever ate. Looking forward to returning 03/25/24. Have a pint waiting for us please!

Went there at the crack of dawn and they were bagging and shucking. Everyone looked at me like wth? Went into the offices and those guys were great. Got half a sack and they iced them down for me. Took them back and had oysters on the half shell as well as chargrilled oysters. The best place to get a good size quantity in Nola. You can't just go in and get 2 dozen though. Usually a whole or half sack! Cheers!

Google
Very fresh oysters at bulk pricing; I appreciated the packing and the ice.

Google
We ordered a bag for Mardi Gras, they had just been harvested the day before. They had a tag with location of harvest and date. Very fresh! Going back for more for Quarter Fest!

One of the absolute BEST places to do business with! On a scale of 1-10 I give them a 12+. These guys are great.

Yelp
We placed a NYE order for a mini sack of oysters & arrived about 10:30 a.m. to pick them up. They had the order ready, filled our cooler with ice, & we were on our way in no time! Note that payment is cash or check, & the owner offered a small military discount for us, which we appreciated! The oysters were quite large & briny. The sack fed three people that night & we made an incredible oyster stew with the ample leftover oysters. We love P & J!

Yelp
Great place. We picked up shucked oysters to bring back to California. We'd been there a few years ago and this time, we toured the facility. They have an upstairs suite that they rent out.

Yelp
They have fantastic, fresh and generously sized oysters. So glad I stopped there. Excellent service too. Just be sure to wear comfortable rubber soled shoes.

Yelp
Got sick from here. Don't bother visiting. The people aren't too friendly either, guess they've never heard of southern charm.

Yelp
Sal and Company at P & J ... the best in New Orleans. Sal and the guys are super friendly and have the freshest most delicious seafood in Nola .., since 1876. We enjoy them already shucked and have picked up some in the shell for putting on the grill. Call ahead to confirm availability as they can sell out... And don't be late... Open from 5 AM until 11:00 AM... Super convenient location right at the corner of Rampart and Toulouse on the edge of the French quarter.. check them out... You won't be sorry!

Yelp
I've been a customer for over 40 years, and get there for the oysters ever chance I get.

Yelp
If you want good fresh Oysters this is a great place to get some! Stopped by early in the morning before heading back home to St. Louis, make sure to bring a decently sized cooler for the sack of oysters, shucked some that night, it was great!

Yelp
Who needs to get oysters anywhere else! Freshest, most beautiful, fat, salty oysters. Never going to get them from the grocery or fish market again. Just need to be there before 11am Monday- Friday. I got a half gallon of shucked and it was all oysters. I don't know if they sell in smaller quantities but my neighbor said we could split a half gallon in the future. It is about 7-8 dozen.

Yelp
Sweetest businessmen I've ever encountered. We had the bright idea to chargrill oysters. A giant sack of the freshest damn oysters known to man was the way to go. They taught us how to schuck them, eat them, and provided us with all of the required equipment. If you want only the best, go to the best. You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
I had a dozen at Luke's for $17. It tasted a bit fresher than Papalachocola oysters, which are excellent. I'm going to have more on my next visit. Yum!

Yelp
Sal and Al are so gracious. They oysters are amazing and the people there are better!

Yelp
This place is so good it sold only to restaurants before Katrina. Lucky for the average joe, they now will sell half sacks (about 100 oysters) of either large (great for grilling) or small (my preference for raw). If your looking to party they also sell full sacks and pre-shucked oysters by the gallon and quart. HANDS DOWN (speaking as a Louisiana seafood snob) , if you want raw oysters for a party in the New Orleans area this is where I would go. Well cleaned, nice salinity Louisiana oysters. There only open till 11am (open ~5am)so get there early, additionally often the sales to the public are first come first served. Price is very competitive (read as "probably cheaper") and I'd put quality a couple notches above your neighborhood seafood store.

Yelp
P & J is a New Orleans institution that has been around for generations! Almost all the best restaurants get their oysters from P & J. The BP oil spill hit them hard but they're back up and roaring. These are generally among the highest quality oysters available anywhere in the area.

Yelp
Before you munch down that fried oyster po boy or enjoy some raw on the half-shell, the restaurants have to get them from somewhere. P&J has been providing oysters to some of the best institutions for oysters in town since 1876. You can also check out their website for great oyster facts and recipes. (I know this reads more like a shill, but with 199 reviews, I can promise I'm a real person)

Yelp
Always quality, tasty oysters. A true New Orleans everlasting gem of a company. A family business that is back on its feet after BP. Long Live P&J Oyster Co.!

Yelp
Bulk sales only - not ready to eat, supplies the locals so you know the quality is good!
