The Best Ice Cream in Boston | Eater Boston

"Ice cream pairs perfectly with savory foods, as the masterminds at P&R know well. The Jamaican shop is one part counter-service restaurant selling jerk chicken, curry goat, ackee and saltfish sandwiches, and meat and vegetable patties, and one part ice cream parlor churning out decadent scoops of ice cream in flavors like grape nut, cake batter, maple walnut, and cherry vanilla. The restaurant also has a location in Mattapan." - Tanya Edwards

The Best Restaurants in Roxbury | Eater Boston

"Located in a bright yellow building on Dudley Street, Jamaican restaurant P&R is a fine spot for warm beef patties, smoky jerk chicken, and ackee and saltfish for breakfast. Don’t leave without tacking on a scoop of the restaurant’s famed grapenut ice cream to your order. (Actually, it’s hard to go wrong with any of P&R’s 25 ice cream flavors.)" - Erika Adams

These Excellent Boston Restaurants Also Serve Fantastic Ice Cream | Eater Boston

"This Roxbury favorite is well-known for grapenut ice cream, a flavor with an interesting story that is the ideal next bite after a savory Jamaican patty. Not only is there an excellent patty selection, but there is also a solid selection of ice cream options, including cherry vanilla, banana, and rum raisin. Try a frappe." - Karen Wilber

Roxbury Is the Spot for West African Food, Fried Chicken, and Étouffée - Eater Boston

"All the food at P&R is great, but locals know that this Jamaican restaurant is the place to get some amazing grapenut ice cream. The Mattapan location is the original, but the Roxbury location is a welcome addition to the neighborhood, and boasts all of the same popular Jamaican dishes, including a vast menu of patties." - Jae'da Turner

Google
Straight up trash. I swear to God their attitude alone will make you not want anything. They do not care about customer service. You can't even place a order for pickup, they want you to use your whole break to order. I can't stand the attitude problem. There a little nicer when you extend a tip and that's sometimes. Save your money on their leftovers

Google
Get all the flavor of Jamaica without the jet lag. This place does it right. The thing that intrigues me is that all Jamaican beef patty places in Boston have bullet proof windows why is this?

AVOID THIS PLACE! The workers at this place are the reason it is hard to support local black business . They acted like they were doing me a service to make my food , eyerolls , huffing and puffing , slamming your hand on the counter multiple times . The food was not great at all. I ordered jerk chicken and it does not look like it at all more like stew chicken . Weird smell as well . I would never go back and if I could have I would request a refund because overall this

Never again. Bad attitudes and negative energy on multiple occasions. Except for one woman, always bright and always cool. I think her name is ?(Jackie)?, I may be wrong. I come and spend my hard earned money and support my people and to be met with anything other than good energy and gratitude is unacceptable.

Google
This location SUCKS! patties are not hot, ice cream is softer than puddy, and no napkins nor spoon was put in bag 7/19/2025 @ 6:20p.

Google
The only good thing is the beef patties and sometimes that’s not even good. The workers charge you for a bag without discussing it with you. Mad expensive for cheap quality food. I see why they say the one in Mattapan is better. Update as of 4/28/25; got 3 beef patties with cheese and it was practically $11. They raised the price on adding cheese and then it wasn’t even melted into the patty. He just threw it in there cold and all and gave all three to me like that. He acts like he can’t speak and like he doesn’t want to be there. Last time I’ll be going here.

MC

Google
Very disappointing. I ordered a plate, ice cream and a beef patty for $50 and it was disgusting. The rice and peas were bland and soggy and the patty was cold and hard. I made the mistake of ordering from here thinking it was the Mattapan location. Never ever again.

Google
I only get the spice bun with extra Jamaican cheese with a beefy patty inside the bun&cheese and it’s always warmed and fresh. Staff at both locations aren’t too friendly or welcoming (this could lower chances of new customers coming back) ending in a positive note, The grapenut ice cream is a must try!

Yelp
I got a scoop of the grape nut, and the ginger ice cream, and it was delicious!!! Not too sweet and very tasty, especially the grape nut- first time trying that flavor and I give it a 10/10. The service was also great, he helped me chose which flavor to get and was very kind.

Yelp
Chileeee , I love P&R but I never got anything but a patty on a bun and grape ice cream. And I will continue to do just that. I got stewed chicken, rice and peas and cabbage. The cabbage had a funny smell but between the smell and taste i couldn't stomach it. The chicken was very much over, under cooked and dry ( yes, i was confused too) the only thing I could really eat was the rice. Thankfully I got a patty because I would've starved to death if I didn't.

Yelp
I only tried the jerk chicken patty, but it was fresh and delicious! Definitely a neighborhood place without a lot of frills, but the patty was crispy and flaky and the seasoning on the chicken was great! Will definitely come back to try the other menu items-- and the ice cream!!

Also they had grape nut ice cream cmon

Yelp
Excellent Jamaican food with an unbelievably wide array of choices, even for my wife, a pescatarian. Friendly staff and reasonable prices.

Yelp
Got a patty with coco bread and cheese was not fresh at all. Defiantly better places around. Staff was nice, was very quiet for dinner time. I use to live and the neighborhood and eat here frequently definitely tasted different.

Yelp
This is a secondary location to their primary location on blue hill Ave in Mattapan. This was my first time to this location and I went twice in one day. The first was to pick up their traditional Jamaican beef patties and a vegetable patty! Delicious! The second time was to stop and get my favorite ice creams, rum and raisin ice cream and grapenut ice cream! These are Caribbean ice cream flavors. They are so good! They carry the best flavored Ice creams in Boston! Along with these treats, they also serve Jamaican cooked meals of various Meats and vegetables as seen in the menu. Chicken, goat, beef etc. My sister had their ackee and saltfish and raved on how good it was. Customer service was friendly! The restaurant was very clean. I liked that there was a section for ice cream and a separate section for food orders. There is a bathroom available to paying customers and is unisex. There is a small parking lot also available. Customer service was still wearing masks due to the pandemic. All in all, I always recommend P&R, especially for ice cream!

Yelp
They got my order wrong, but the food was pretty delicious. I ordered a jerk chicken entree ($14 on Uber Eats) with rice and peas, steamed vegetables, plantains, and salad. I'm pretty sure I received jerk pork instead, and the order I received did not come with the salad (not that I minded). The pork itself was very tender and fell off the bone. I wish it came with more jerk sauce though! It also wasn't super spicy. The portion of rice was huge, and the rice was super flavorful. I also got a side of plantains ($5). The plantains were super sweet, although the portion was a bit smaller than what I'm used to getting at other restaurants. The coco bread ($2.50) was super fluffy. I haven't had a lot of cocobread before so I wouldn't be a good judge for this, but I enjoyed it a lot! It was slightly sweet and very soft. The prices are super reasonable, but people who have dietary restrictions (i.e. who cannot eat pork) should be careful.

Dee C.

Yelp
So there is a such thing as Jamaican cheese and you can get it put in your patty for all of just $2.25. When I tell you that cheese does something different trust me when I say it. I went back a short few hours later and got another one. They have an ice cream shop attached. But I am not a fan of the texture on their Richie's Slush. Seems like its a lil over frozen. I love how friendly everyone is here and the food is amazing

Yelp
Sent in a request for menu ingredient information 2 weeks ago. They never contacted me. I ordered my catering from someone else.

Yelp
I was waiting for my friends to come over for dinner and needed a quick snack, so I walked over. If you go there close to closing time, be aware that they may not have a full menu. I got their fish sandwich and a vegetable patty. The such sandwich was . I was really grateful that they had so many options for vegetarians. Fish, soy, vegetable patties, etc. They make their own hot sauce and that is dope--isn't was delicious! BUT they charge 50 cents per container, that sucks because the container is so small.

Yelp
I've been going there for years and one thing I can say is that the food is still good. What the place needs work on better trading on how to treat their customers. There is one particular woman that works there that always seems to have an attitude. Seems as if Im bothering her when I'm placing my order. I'd like to add I'm the type of guy who doesn't need top notch service or treatment when in a store but this middle aged lady leaves a lot to be desired. I think the business would be doing a lot better if they better train the staff on how to treat the customers. I left there today not wanting to come back ever again. Management please fix this problem please. I want P&R and succeed

Yelp
Idc what anyone says about this restaurant. This is so good. I'm really asking myself why it took me years to get outside of my boring food taste and get outside my comfort zone. I had the beef, curry chicken and jerk chicken Pattie's and it's so good. I think it's much better than the ONE time I had it at some BSU club at umass Amherst. I'll be definitely coming back and exploring more food. Not to mention, the staff was so nice to me!!

Yelp
Found this place through Yelp . 1st it is not to far off the highway. 2. It has parking !! Went into the restaurant, lots of seating, not a big selection, but all the goodies. The lady said her food was better than the rest ! Brought $40 with of food home to be disappointed! Food had no heat to it, tasted bland on the spices . The serving sizes was good , but even the jerk chicken didn't give any heat and a bit dry . Restaurant was. Lean and the staff was polite. So on to the next .

Yelp
Glad to see another P&R popping up around Boston. First time I went here I got a small jerk chicken plate w/ cabbage and brown rice & peas. I definitely recommend just getting a small plate because they really like it on. Only sad part was that the jerk chicken itself wasn't really spice but good nonetheless. I've also had their beef patty w/ cheese and coco bread. I'd 100% recommend this combo. Cheap & filing. I'll be coming back.

Yelp
I ordered an meal for pick during my lunch hour at work, and it was ready to go in the time period they mentioned so this was great. I ordered the jerk chicken which I thought had a more dense gravy like sauce to it than I would have liked which created a different taste in the chicken, but the rice and peas that went with it were decent, the cole slaw the meal came with was ok, and the beef patty was also ok, it tasted like the premade beef patties you buy at the grocery store so it was fine. However, the 2 employees that were there were very polite and friendly so I would like to potentially give it another chance.

Lauren H.

Yelp
Food was delicious. First time, I visited in person, per COVID, and the women at the counter were very friendly and helpful. I ordered snapper meal, oxtail meal, beer patty and vegetable patty. Second time, I got delivery. Everything came just as I ordered and fresh. I ordered the oxtail meal, side order of plantains, beef patty and jerk chicken patty. I have become a plantain convert.

Jason R.

Yelp
I ordered food lg jerk with rice tells me my total I was finished ordering asked for beef patty with coco bread says my total again, as I'm waiting till get my food I look at the ice cream side lady comes out ask if I was gonna order I said yeah stay there about 10 minutes never comes out I grab my food stood there another 5 minutes nobody came out left eat in my work van went back in to get ice cream the lady yells out from the food side can I help you I said yeah I would like to get something this is the lady that was already at the ice cream side I said I would like to order she yells everything order is in this side so I told what I wanted from the ice cream side she tells me uh so I left mind you the food was disgusting and try different food from all over.

Yelp
Chicken patties are the best in the city. Aside from the occasional mix up where they will give me a beef patty instead for the curry chicken (even though they are marked off for distinction). (Confuses face?)

Yelp
Friday evening, wait time was near zero. Staff were friendly, helpful, upbeat. Explained well what you get in each "special". The place was very pretty, very inviting. It's local to where I live; that matters to me. The food was excellent - jerk chicken/macaroni/cabbage/sweet plantain dinner. Not too spicy, but plenty of zest. Huge amounts of food - too much. Maybe ask for "smaller helpings!" Took home a lot. Can enjoy it over and over. There is parking behind the store. Great - because Dudley St is usually parked full. One regret - we didn't try ice cream!

Yelp
So I went there a few days ago and honestly didn't know the p&r on blue hills even did food, i only went there for patties but you won't be disappointed because it's on point! I bought a large Curry goat, rice and beans, macaroni and cabbage. Everything was great, my mouth is actually watering thinking of the food I ate that day. The cashiers were genuine happy and welcoming. Which isn't how most island restaurants come off. All and all I have no complaints. They actually have sitting for the customers. One side for the food and I separate room for the ice cream.
google avatar

Khadija J.

Yelp
I ordered food from here and it didn't taste that great. Honestly it Taste like they had gave me old food that's been sitting there. Not only that but it apparently didn't settle in my twins belly's because they threw it up. Grosss

Yelp
Good authentic Jamaican food at a low price! Had their jerk chicken meal which came with two sides-I chose the rice and beans with plantains and it was delicious; and if you're in the mood for desert they also are an ice cream parlor that also serves Italian ice. It's a win-win!
google avatar

Laurie G.

Yelp
This spot is really conveniently located on Dudley St. with parking behind the restaurant. Great bang for your buck as stated in other reviews. Coco bread, beef patty, and Jamaican cheese is the way to go for $4.50. Other places in the area are a minimum of $10 for a way less filling lunch option. Friendly staff, too.
google avatar

Tetsu C.

Yelp
Local business. Authentic food. Friendly service. Tender juicy Jamaican jerk chicken! Bang for your buck!
google avatar

Jeremy D.

Yelp
If you are looking for authentic Jamaican food this is your spot. The best Beef Patty in Boston. HANDS DOWN!! The perfect place to try something new every time because it's all good. Oh and make sure you get some Rum Raisin Ice cream for desert. Bless!

Veronica W.

Yelp
The bubble gum ice cream is magical! Tastes just like bubble gum. Edible bubble gum! My childhood dream has come true. Thank you!!
google avatar

Aarajahan H.

Yelp
The patties are always decent. Honestly I never eat food from P&R. However what is completely ridiculous is the wait time that you have to experience. With over 3 people working the counter it doesn't make sense how slow they are in this place

Kimeesha M.

Yelp
I went in and spent 15$ on a small plate of oxtails (their only size), I love oxtails. I ordered oxtails rice and cabbage. Everything was bland. The oxtail gravy was like water consistency. If you know genuine Caribbean food you will not be impressed. I was tempted to go ask for my money back but If I would've been told no I would've only gotten more mad. Do I have to give them one star?

Dee S.

Yelp
I've been going P&R on Blue Hill Ave for many moons but since the Dudley location is convenient I finally tried food, my usual was patties & Ice Cream like many I know. So I asked the server/register clerk in her opinion what's the best dish, she said jerk chicken. I was elated, I love jerk. I purchased a medium, it was delicious, spicy with a hint of BBQ sauce. My one complaint would have to be getting three smaller pieces of meat for the amount spend was kind of ridiculous. This space is clean and you can sit and eat, prices are a bit higher than the Blue Hill location. Try it and let me know, enjoy...

Gigi Y.

Yelp
First and last time will I go there. I wish I could give them no stars. For 7 dollars they gave a tablespoon of saltfish. I know it was a tablespoon because I picked it all up with one tablespoon . I think that's disrespectful that restaurants do this to you. People work hard for their money and if I'm willing to support you please be willing to give me adequate food for my support. My mistake today was not waiting for the other restaurant to open and checking P&R out. The Right Taste for a dollar more ($8) gives me enough to share with 2 people. Enough saltfish to have with every bite of provision. I should have known not to stray from what I know. You live and you learn.
