Came here on Friday in middle of happy hour time ( think 400-700pm) reseeved for about 19 people in our party. Ambiance is lively, decorative and and giving off the dia de los muertos vibes. There is a huge outside patio, and a smaller private patio for those who want something a little more intimate.
If you're like and me and enjoy a good mezcal, Padre doesn't disappoint. I had a couple El Citron's ( basically a mezcal old fashion), a Oaxacan mezcal cocktail, and another cocktail with some sort of coconut cream and a couple of reposado shots (La Gritona (excellent btw)).
After browsing the menu on our phones we ended up with a medley of appetizers on the happy hour prices. Chips and salsa, guacamole, loaded fries, loaded nachos, yucca fries, beef and veggie empanadas. Let me tell you to just skip everything else and just go for the veggie empanadas and you won't be disappointed.
I did end up sampling/ sharing some entrees. Plate presentation was on point, but flavor, overall though, the plates missed the mark for me. Especially, the lomo saltado. I know every chef has their own take on entrees, but to me the essence of a lomo saltado($19) are the fries and then the flavor savory meat. It seems like the meat here was on the sweeter side. And putting them in a bowl vs a flat plate just makes the fries soggy by the time we get them. Barbacoa plate ($15), although tender, was underwhelming. Finally, I ordered a New York chimichurri steak ($22-23?) but the chimichurri sauce didn't have that usual tarty, herbaceousness chimichurri's are known for.
Lastly, of the three desserts that were ordered (churros ($12), banana chmichanga ($12), and tres leches bread pudding ($10)), I'd probably just come back for the banana chmichanga. The churros were small, slightly overcooked. Tres leches bread pudding was somewhat dense for me.
Positives for Padre: cocktails, veggie empanadas, banana chmichanga, ambiance, full bar, oh and family/stroller friendly. Our server Keish (?) Was awesome!
Not so positive: parking. Almost non existent, unless it's street parking or I missed a secret parking lot somewhere.
I would come back to give it another try.
