Yelp
Just Noodling Around
One of 29 US locations** for famed Korean chef and entrepreneur Jong-Won Paik that's been in business for nearly ten years (ca. 2016). I first visited back in 2017, and was impressed but haven't returned since, as most restaurants get lost in the shuffle once I've visited them once.
It wasn't until we recently watched the Korean cooking competition "Culinary Class Wars" (Netflix), where Chef Paik served as a judge, that my desire to visit Chef Paik's restaurant was renewed, as I didn't really know much about him on my first visit.
The Good:
*Menu had expanded since my first visit, but not by much. They still keep it pretty simple, which is a bonus in my book.
*Complimentary pickled Daikon radish were delicious. They're probably not for everyone, but if you like funky, sweet pickled things then they'll be your jam.
*The Jajangmyeon (noodles w/ fermented black bean sauce w/ pork & veggies) is probably our favorite dish here, as we ordered it on both our visits. It starts out a little funky but it's definitely one of those dishes that the more you eat, the more you want.
*Prices are fantastic, as the large Jajangmyeon was $15 and plenty of food for two people.
*Chili Shrimp were tasty and had a nice sweet-chili sauce that could've used more heat imo. Otherwise, they were quite tasty.
*The Tangsuyuk (sweet & sour pork), which we ordered on our first visit, was delicious and seemed like a very popular dish at neighboring tables. The crisp rice flour coating is pretty phenomenal, if memory serves.
*Service was friendly and fast
The Meh:
*Fried dumplings were a touch dry for my liking and needed a sauce.
*Stir-fried Noodle dish was a bit too fishy for my son's liking, and I have to say I kinda agreed. It must be the type/brand of oyster sauce they use that's just a bit too heavy-handed with the funk.
*As usual, we're always the only non-Asians at these places. Kinda sad that so many people are missing out on great food because it's "different." ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The Ugly:
*Parking is real mayhem if you arrive around the busy periods. They have a shared lot with several other businesses, including a laundromat, which claims several spots for their customers only. The surrounding neighbor lots have signs specifically forbidding Paik's customer parking, so you can take your chances there. There is some street parking, which is how we lucked out.
Conclusion: Good Korean-Chinese food with speedy service and a great price point.
**There's eight more slated to me opened this year (2025), including one in South SJ!
