This skatepark near the Art Museum was conceived in 2002, and brought to fruition in 2013. It was made from unutilized space, and is now accessible from another city project, the Schuylkill River Trail.
I saw kids get on Regional Rail in the 'burbs, and be able to access this park via Schuylkill River Trail from 30th Street Station. It was great to see this so available to urban and suburban kids alike.
I didn't see any posted rules, so I assume this was okay, but a group of kids on bikes were occupying one area, doing various tricks, while two other noticeable areas were available for skateboarders. It was very fun to watch everyone doing their stuff.
There is graffiti all over the ramps and flat space. It is contained to the skatepark, so I'm guessing they gave a paint party to make it look authentic? Either that or our city graffiti artists are respectful of trail vs skatepark boundaries.
My only complaint was it seemed overgrown. There are no grass patches growing through cracks in pavement or anything like that (I saw no cracks anyway), but the planting beds were straggly, and just really overcrowded with uncultivated sapling trees and weeds as big as bushes. If it were spring, allergies would be going haywire.
All in all a great use of greenspace. It's just really in need of landscapers.
