Where to Drink Tea in Philly | Eater Philly

"Located right outside of Philly in Delaware County, the Painted Tea Cup is a Victorian-style tea room and boutique. Thursdays through Saturdays, the British-inspired shop offers high tea reservations, loose-leaf retail teas, and house-made jellies and fruit butters. On warmer days you can enjoy a la carte tea services on the shaded outdoor patio. Headed to a fancy tea party? Dress the part with accessories like galleria umbrellas and fascinators from the boutique." - Esra Erol

What a lovely day my mom and I had celebrating her 90th Birthday! Special thanks to Mary, Bernadette, and Susan for making this a memorable day! The food was amazing, such a nice variety of tasty treats on our plate. This was my first time experiencing High Tea and I just loved it! The boutique has lovely accessories and clothing. The house itself is charming and beautiful. During these stressful times, this is the perfect place to relax and recharge and enjoy your favorite tea and delicious food selections. Thanks Again!

I have driven by this establishment for years, and finally visited a few days ago. The interior is very dainty and cute, it would be a nice place to shop for a gift. High tea is $33 a person, and you each get a choice of tea, a lunch plate, and a dessert plate. I personally would have liked a more robust selection of teas, but their selection (although limited) is still quite good. The tea menu had 1 black tea, 1 no-caffeine black tea blend, 1 green tea, 1 earl grey white tea, 1 rooibos tea. The lunch plate had about 7-8 items, includes a scone, a sweet bread, and a chicken salad croissant. The dessert plate had 3 mini desserts. They also served a tea biscuit at the beginning of the tea session. I wish they served more jam and clotted cream since the serving they gave was for the table and not an individual serving. Overall, I think it was a very good experience. I think the quality of the food is top-notch, I just personally think the quantity could have been increased for the price, since they serve bites rather than full servings. I would be open to visiting again for their seasonal offerings next season.

Google
I had the pleasure of visiting this cute spot for a "solo" afternoon tea. The tea was delicious, and I thoroughly enjoyed the finger sandwiches and sweets. While the scone wasn't the best that I ever had, as I prefer biscuit-like scones, it was still good. They sell a lot of tea accessories and even boutique-style clothing. It was worth the hour drive, and I would absolutely recommend it.

Google
Everyone there is so kind, the food is amazing! The gluten free accommodations are wonderful. We bought the tea before we left because of how much we loved it. 10/10 recommend.

Had a beautiful birthday lunch here and it did not disappoint! Very nice aesthetic, delicious homemade exquisite looking food, wonderful tea, desert and the atmosphere is welcoming and relaxing. Also there is a store inside so you can purchase treats if you like!

Google
So cute! I don’t know why this the first tie I have been here but this place is adorable. Ladies, it’s tea time! Bring your friends! I will say that there could be more tea options for that price. Two tea choices🤔 I would say 3 or 4 choices per party would be more appropriate for the price. Otherwise, love everything else!!!! The tea sandwiches, Yum! Especially the one with the pickled radish! And the little cookies! My pinky is coming out just thinking about that delightful experience. Love it! Thank you!

Google
1st time here, while making the reservation...I told them I limit my yeast intake, but I am NOT a vegan or gluten-free. They listed me as Vegan anyway and gave those options, which were very few. I kept clarifying that I was not a vegan throughout my time here and had to request the regular desert options. The vegan/vegetarian option for lunch was a massive salad of "random vegetables thrown together, and a Mango dressing." If you are a vegan or vegetarian, be aware that they do not have many options as they are not catering to your demographic but merely tolerating it. If you have food sensitives or allergies, PLEASE be very specific and repetitive about them before and after arrival. Overall, the food was good and the tea was great but some improvement is needed.

Google
I went with my family a few weeks ago, they put us in a room with a bridal shower (it was awkward). The tea was good, food was ok, you didn’t have any control of the food you were getting. Probably won’t go back as it’s a little far from me.

Yelp
What a great experience! The place is easy to find and there's parking on site! Be careful since the parking lot shows up before the restaurant so be sure to turn in appropriately - assuming the place will be coming up on your right. Inside, it's pulled together like a scene from Alice in Wonderland, with little baskets of things scattered throughout for purchase. It's like having tea in a thematic gift shop. We had a timed reservation and the hosts were ready with our table when we arrived. We had also specified that we are vegetarian, so they adjusted some of the offerings to make sure they were veggie friendly. Honestly, great job not only substituting but making sure it's still a delicious dish by adding in things when other items were taken out! Everything was so delicious and the tea was stellar! We enjoyed the experience and the service and felt we had ample time to enjoy the whimsy of it all. Enjoy your time!

Yelp
Love this place! They offer a great High Tea and a wonderful space to shop! I have had wonderful tea dates here and have also nabbed some wonderful gifts! Often booked, so plan ahead, this is not a same-day reservation place; most often you leave a message and they call back, but they are very responsive! Parking can be a challenge, they have a small lot which is often full. Highly recommended!

Yelp
I decided to treat my daughter to afternoon tea at the Painted Tea Cup for her birthday. It was a great choice! It is truly something different to do. Looking on the website, you will need to make reservations. I called and left a message, and they called me back. I also forgot to tell them my daughter is a vegetarian, so I sent a message through their website, and they updated the instructions right away. The Painted Tea Cup is located at 220 S. State Road, in Upper Darby. As we entered, they were very welcoming as they checked for our reservation. We were seated right away and given a menu with the different types of tea they offer. You are allowed 2 teas, one with your lunch and 1 with dessert. We chose the " Lady Rose" to go with our meal and the " Belgian Chocolate " to go with the dessert. Loved the Belgian Chocolate the most. It had very subtle hints of chocolate notes that are too hard to describe. They come out with your meal and describe every little sandwich on your plate. I don't remember anything. All I know is that it was good. (See pictures). Don't expect a big lunch. They're little cute sandwiches and desserts that are adorable, but when you finish, you will be full. Also, you can drink as much tea as you like. The dining room is small, so you may get to know the people around you. I found it to be very whimsical, with the antique tea cups all around. It was $30 per person, not counting any tip you would like to leave. I would definitely go back and will recommend the Painted Tea Cup to others.

Yelp
Excellent in every way. Was only there once 7 years ago. Expensive but the alfresco dining was divine.

Yelp
This place is AWESOME. I'm a huge fan of afternoon tea, and the Painted Tea Cup was a wonderful experience. I came here for a bachelorette event, and we were seated in a private room that could hold 15-20 people. It really feels like you're having afternoon tea at someone's house. The decor was so cute and cozy, and even the bathroom was on theme. The teas were great, and the food was also fantastic. They explained everything to us and also accommodated our dietary restrictions. There's a parking lot attached to the building, but there's also plenty of street parking nearby.

Yelp
This place is cozy, and the high-tea experience is phenomenal. Their attention to detail is exquisite right down to the finger sandwiches with the crusts removed. This is a great destination to bring a date or to catch up with friends.

Yelp
Lovely afternoon of tea with mom and cousins. The entire experience was awesome. The staff members greeted us and doted on us for a couple of hours. The scones and other delicacies were delicious. The teas were tasty ad well. There is a lovely gift shop with unique and specially curated items. In addition there event spaces available for showers and larger groups.

Yelp
I went here with my sister and my mom today and I LOVED the whole experience. First, the staff was wonderful. They were all sweet and very attentive to our table. Second, the food choices were WONDERFUL! I am a picky eater, but I tried every single thing on my plate and ended up loving each finger sandwich. Third, we chose 2 teas and i highly enjoyed both. Lastly, we ended our tea with 3 little desserts that were simply delicious. I highly recommend The Painted Tea Cup to anyone and every tea lover.

Yelp
Lovely tea room! The selections are always unique and flavorful. The chicken salad croissant is the absolute best. Their tea menu is absolutely massive, and there is truly something for everyone! The only thing that would make high tea better would be a soup, salad, or quiche option. But overall, a wonderful experience!

Lisa N.

Yelp
Went there for my birthday. The PTC is now one of our favorite tea houses. Great atmosphere and customer service. A lovely variety of teas-- kept hot for our entire experience. The food was delicious and the portions were perfect! My BFF enjoyed her Veg plate.

Yelp
Love!!!!!! This place. My friend and I are visiting tea houses in the Philadelphia and New Jersey areas. We have tried 6 places and this is our fave. They have an amazing tea selection. All food, tea sandwiches, cookies and desserts are handmade fresh and unique. The wait staff is amazing. I took one star off as the last time I was there, a waitress I am not familiar with made a comment. I am black and was there with my black mother. There was a large table next to us with one black women in the party. To be honest we rarely see other black people here but that's not their fault. On this day the one waitress was passing another waitress in the doorway, which we were seating by and said "Excuse me Sista" with a bug emphasis on Sista. The white waitress she was speaking to quickly noted that there were black people there, in a way of hey why would you say that. The one who said it said " I know that's why I said it!" the waiters she was speaking to just walked away.. Now the waiitress who made the Sista comments was our waitress, she was okay not the best there and I realized why. One person should not ruin it for a whole business that has always been kind to us. But it should be noted. Also this posting does not mean only people of color can say Sista, it was the in which it was said. As a reference for the business I was there on April 9th.

Yelp
I went to a bridal shower at this restaurant. I liked that the restaurant has a second floor that can be reserved for this type of event. During the course of our afternoon, we were served crackers with cream cheese, a sweet and savory round of treats, and then finally a dessert plate with more pastries and also ice cream. My favorite part about my experience at this restaurant was the unlimited and generous refills of tea. My only point of constructive criticism is that the owners should look to simplify some of the decor and merchandise displays, as they detract from the beauty of the actual building.

Yelp
I came here for a private party for my aunt's baby shower and we were treated so well! We got an entire room sectioned off for ourselves and there was a beautiful long table set up with our individual meals and various tea cups. Because we booked as a large party, we could only try 2 of the teas. I wish we had the option to try more of them, or I wish there were more decaffeinated options. The food was amazing but because it was already pre-plated, I could only try one of each item that came on the plate. I wish they came out in those tiered platters so I could pick and choose what I liked! Since the veggie and meat options were different, there were some items that the vegetarians had that I wish I could have tried. Regardless, the food was very tasty and had a large variety on the plate! I thought I wouldn't be full after eating but I was pleasantly surprised at the portions. They were very filling. I would recommend this place for the hospitality but not for the freedom to choose what you want.

Yelp
I've been to a handful of high tea experiences and this one was a nice addition to the bunch. It felt a bit like being invited to a friend's house, as the place is a house with tables on each floor and an assortment of kitschy decorations and local items for sale throughout the building. The teas we ordered did not disappoint, and I enjoyed probably 4 cups of tea throughout the experience. The food contained lots of variation so naturally there were some items I didn't care for and others I liked. The service was very friendly, although not super crisp (they need a better system for serving tea because if they're going to pour it for you they should have a way to not spill it in the saucer or on the table each time). The main reason I gave this place 4 stars instead of 5 is: I wish you had more selection over your individual tea and food. As a table of 4 we had to agree on 2 teas, instead of each getting to try our own and that's not how it's been at other tea houses I've been to. Additionally, I had no say over what food I was served, whereas at other tea houses I've been able to choose from even a small selection of tea sandwiches and jam flavors etc. They at least accommodate for vegetarians, but the vegetarians still don't get any say over their menu.

Mary M.

Yelp
My only regret is that I didn't try this place sooner, as I'll be moving away from this area next month. Went with a friend on a Thursday afternoon for the full afternoon tea. Not too many others there so we were able to sit leisurely and enjoy our tea and food for more than two hours. Not a huge tea selection, and no choices to be made about what food you're served (except they did ask when I made the reservation if either of us had any dietary restrictions, nice touch). But the teas we did choose, and the food we were served, were all delicious. For the quantity, the service, and the taste, I think their fixed price is reasonable. The two women who served us couldn't have been more attentive or friendly, they definitely added to the experience. Bonus: I found a pair of earrings on our way out as we passed through the gift shop that are my new favorites!

Yelp
We came here for my daughter's birthday because she wanted a tea party and she loved it. The interior is cozy and charming and has a small shop at the front. You definitely need reservations because there are not many tables. The menu had a few options for a la carte or a full experience which included your choice of tea, finger sandwiches, scone, and a small dessert. The prices, I think are high, considering your eating egg salad on toast, but you are paying for the experience. The food was good, the scones were exceptional. My daughter really loved it and I will recommend this to others seeking a similar experience.

Yelp
My best friend and I go to the Painted Tea Cup every year to celebrate Christmas and our lifelong friendship. So today returning post pandemic was really delightful! Our servers were fantastic! The tea, homemade soup and platters were all delicious and satisfying. We both did a little shopping too!

Yelp
This place is wonderful ! I can't believe I waited so long to give it a try. I came here with a group of 20+ ladies for a private event and I was not disappointed. The décor was beautiful and the service was superb. It really brought me back to childhood playing tea party and reminded me that I need to purchase a nice tea set. The food was delicious and the portion size was decent. I really enjoyed the chicken salad croissant and the banana bread. Those were my favorites. My group also opted for the Earl Grey tea which was very tasty. I definitely plan to come again and must bring my Mom and best friend.

Yelp
This is my new favorite place!!! Came here with a friend. We did not make reservations. The ladies who worked here were so nice and the decor is toooo cute!! We ordered our tea and pastries. When I tell you, everything we put in our mouths were delicious.. I mean it! The host was so hospitable, that we didn't know they were closing! She just kept pouring and engaging us! It wasn't until we looked around and we were the only ones left. We got up and asked if they were closing and she casually said yes, and then encouraged us to look upstairs since it was our first time there... I will be coming back. You just don't find this kind of customer service and quality teas, these days!

Yelp
Super cute!! I was a little weary of this place at first, particularly about the price and whether I'd be satisfied afterwards, but found out that was definitely not an issue! There are so many teas to try from, on Sundays the menu is a little shorter but we got the honey mango tea and Long Island one and both were really refreshing and nice. They start by giving each person a small cracker with dip which is just the biggest tease and made us so hungry. The food itself was great and there were so many different little sandwiches! All were so good and very filling! The 3 desserts weren't amazing but still quite good and interesting selections! Will definitely return and highly recommend if you like tea or just new unique eating experiences!

Yelp
This was our first time trying this tea room and we loved it! I took my niece here for high tea for her birthday and I cannot express how wonderful this experience was. It was very busy when we went, however, since reservations are required we were seated in an appropriate amount of time. Every hostess was extremely knowledgeable (and honest) about every tea. They checked on us regularly but in an unobtrusive manner. All the hostess were so friendly and accommodating. I don't know if they are family, but they sure make you feel like you were part of theirs. That alone relaxed you and got you ready for the delightful experience to come. As the birthday girl, my niece ordered the teas she preferred. We ordered Pear Plum and one of the Chai teas. The pear plum tasted EXACTLY how it was described. I am not a fan of chai tea, AT ALL! lol however, I decided to try it with one of the peppermint... I can only describe them as little pillows. They are about 4x's the size of a small sugar cube. I am now a fan of chai with sweet peppermint added. The peppermint brings out the spice of the chai, but the sweetness mellows it out and the combined taste is phenomenal. I had two cups of that alone! The portions and selections were extremely satisfying. Most tea rooms are not designed for you to get full but we were stuffed and desert hadn't even arrived. Everything is made fresh each day and you can tell from the flavors and the freshness of every treat. My favorite was the dill cucumber finger sandwich followed closely by the chicken salad in a palm sized flaky, buttery croissant. Not to mention the moist little cakes, mini muffin and cookie. I think the plate had at least a dozen choices. Lastly, desert arrived. It was a small dish of rice pudding, a warm sugared ginger cookie and the cutest, tiniest little chocolate with cream cheese frosting mini cupcake. The cupcake was so moist and gooey, it stuck to the roof of my mouth. Graphic, I know, but I had to explain how decadent it was. We were both so full that we couldn't finish desert. Would I recommend The Painted Teacup? Absolutely!!! It is a perfect girls day retreat. I will be back and I can picture not having a wonderful time here. This is stamped as a new fave of mine.

Yelp
I was given a birthday party here and let me say this place is so beautiful. I love the unique tea cups and table arrangements. We had a party of 12 with BYOB wine and champagne and they made sure our glasses stayed full and the tea was refreshing and flavorful. The staff was attentive and helping explaining everything and I can't wait to be invited back. It was a unique memorable birthday experience. Two thumbs up

Yelp
This place is Beautiful! From the china to the mantel pieces and seasonal decor. Went with my mom and daughter and we all enjoyed it; I don't eat meat and they were very accommodating. We dressed up of course, you can't have tea without being fabulous but I'm sure you can be casual as well. Although I loved the main course and deserts I must say the tea was my favorite part. So many choices to choose and of course your have your cube sugar which I haven't seen since childhood and cinnamon sticks. Wonderful! On the main floor and upstairs you can shop, they have teas, jams, cinnamon sticks, jewelry etc. Last be definitely not least the staff is amazing!! Very attentive made you feel like you've known them for years! This place is for ALL ages, they even have a ramp for those who can't or don't want to take the steps! Highly recommended, will be back

Yelp
This place was so cute! I met up with a friend for lunch and we had high tea. Lots of tea selections, and pre-selected entree of handheld sandwiches and goodies. I was surprised when it was followed up with a whole dessert tray. The food was good and it's a great place for chatting - nice and quiet and the tables are separated enough that you have some privacy. The decor reminds me of my grandmas house in the best way. My only downside is that parking is limited so give yourself some extra time there!

Sarah P.

Yelp
We ventured here to celebrate my daughters birthday and boy oh boy these reviews were spot on! I'm so glad we trusted fellow yelpers and gave this place a chance. The wait staff were incredibly friendly and kind as they took care of us. The food was amazing. Honestly way better than I expected. The scones were to DIE for and the selection of teas was perfect for our larger party. We will definitely be coming back!

Ellen W.

Yelp
This tea house is wonderful from the delicious tea sandwiches and lovely teas to the deserts! They couldn't have been nicer to us and the shopping was nice also.

Yelp
Tucked away in an unassuming Upper Darby home was the painted tea cup. There were several rooms you can dine in, we happened to be seated in a room upstairs. As for ambience, although the overall feel was homey, each room was filled with merchandise available for purchase. None of which to my liking, maybe more of my mom or grandma's style. I think i would have preferred to see the merchandise in consolidated areas within in the house. However, that did not ruin my experience. The wait staff was super friendly and helpful. For a group of 6 women, we chose 2 different teas which were served throughout the meal, our cups were never empty. We had several individuals with dietary restrictions and they were able to accommodate which great. I've had different tea experiences, places that refill your sandwiches and treat and this time every thing came out on one plate, no refills. The food was simple but full of different flavors. Although, I left stuffed the gluten in me wished they gave me more. The gluten free dessert options looked more appetizing than the regular dessert. They had their own parking lot which was greatc we came early so had a space but when we left we noticed lot wad packed. Some tips, make reservations, call ahead if you have allergies or dietary restrictions, let them know if anyone in your party will have difficulty with stairs. Overall a great experience, I am sure I will be back.

Yelp
This is my 4th time visiting the Painted Tea Cup. Each time I come, I have a pleasant experience that somehow always tops the last! Whether it is the seasonal changing menu or the beautiful ambiance, I am never disappointed. My family and I attended the Jazz Under The Stars Night this week. We sat on the back patio outside and it was decorated perfectly for the night! The jazz player performed wonderfully and it really added to the experience. I drank the iced tea and the flavors were so delicious, I didn't need to add any cream or sugar. A few lemon and orange slices did the job! For an appetizer, each person was served a variety of cheeses, crackers, and dips. It was a nice variety. The second appetizer was a summer fruit salad. This was a nice refreshing plate. For our entree, we were each served a grilled chicken sandwich and two sides. The sauces on the sandwich were amazing and the chicken was cooked perfectly. This was the highlight of the meal for me. For dessert, we were each served a ice cream and brownie cup and a warm chocolate chip cookie. I could have eaten 3 of those! The servers were so kind throughout the night. They thoroughly explained the courses, offered frequent refills, and promptly cleaned our tables. We will definitely be back again for another event or afternoon tea. Can't wait to go return!

Yelp
I have always wanted to go to this place so today was the day. I went with my friend and our daughters. It is a very quaint little place. For my first experience of High Tea I very much enjoyed it. The table is set adorable with the sugar cubes, cinnamon sticks and also soft candy to place in the tea. The tea selection is amazing at least ten pages to choose from. The lunch is a set menu that they serve. All the food was very fresh and also very good. The dessert was also wonderful. The price is also fixed for every person. I would think if a child is under ten they wouldn't enjoy it. My daughter who is thirteen loved it. It is a great spot to go with girlfriends or take you Mom out. I will be bringing my Mom there soon.

Rie C.

Yelp
This place is like a vacation for the soul! So many delightful things to gaze at (and to buy, if you are so inclined!), plus the food is wonderful! The tea is non-stop, with so many choices it is almost difficult to decide. I can't even say which food, or even flavor of tea, was my favorite because it was all that good. The servers are very warm and attentive, making guests feel very welcomed and special. They were a real 'plus' to this already perfect place! In fact, I am going back there this Saturday after being there just a scant month ago. It is something I am very happily anticipating!

Yelp
The Painted Tea Cup was a lovely experience. My mom, sister, and I came for a late lunch. We were STARVING and this place did not disappoint. All the courses we are were DELICIOUS! As each part of the meal arrived we were more and more impressed. The service was very good and the waitresses were all very friendly and made it feel like an intimate experience. I would highly recommend coming here for tea! Make sure you make a recommendation in advance as it does fill up quickly!

Yelp
After being here for the 7th time, I thought it was only right to share with everyone how AMAZING The Painted Tea Cup really is. It is not very often that all of the women in my family are all together due to everyone living all across the country lol, but when we are together this is always the first place we go. From the tea to the food to the service to the way they accommodate everyone, it by far is the best tea room out there!

Yelp
My Mom and I travel and visit tearooms wherever we go, The Painted Teacup was delightful and ranks among the best. They have their own parking lot, and are located in a Victorian home. We were immediate greeted and brought to our table. Our server was friendly, and explained how they present tea. They offer a wide variety of tea, all of which looked appetizing. We settled of the Voodoo (a black fruit tea) and the Macadamia Coconut Chocolate, both were the best teas we have ever been served. Our tea sandwiches, scones and sweet breasts were served first and all were delicious! The flavors really popped in our mouths, especially the Brie cheese with fig and orange marmalade tart. Finally dessert is served and offers three homemade crafted goodness treats. Our service was excellent, and the owner circulates and thanks each table for coming. They offer a great variety of tea and other accessories. We were quite impressed, each tea room is a little different and I like that they keep your tea warm in the kitchen and always make sure you have a full cup. Also very nice is the selection of sweet breads, and the scones are very tasty and served with clotted cream and jam. I highly recommend The Painted Tea Cup and we look forward to retuning!

Yelp
Disappointing. I have tried to use my gift card for a year but they were not opened when I was free. I finally had a day to go with my mom and I was so excited only to be told that I needed a reservation. The website said "come join us". I saw that reservation were not required for outdoor dining but thought it meant for everything. I can deal with my Mistake. The young lady was quite nice but the woman, who I believe is the owner, was rude. She was not warm, accommodating or kind and there are only three cars in the lot. I have been on the lot for a half hour trying to find another venue and in that time, no one else entered the place. I can't imagine that they couldn't accommodate us. We were so excited that we taking pics and everything outside. Cannot believe the owner's attitude. Truly disappointing. Thankfully I found another venue that was happy to accommodate us.

Yelp
We came here for Mother's Day Tea and everything tasted absolutely amazing! The waitresses were all super nice and attentive. The tea sandwiches are all unique and tasty. We will definitely be coming back again soon

Yelp
Treated my mom to high tea as a Christmas gift. The price was outstanding for what we got!! The room was beautifully decorated for the holidays and our table was in a cozy little corner with a lace table cloth and beautiful china. They were accommodating to our dietary restrictions which was GREAT! The food and tea were truly outstanding. It is clear the owner loves what she does! We can't wait to go again!

Yelp
First I want to state what happened is a result of my grandmother's ignorance. That said.... So my grandmom took me here for my birthday lunch since we enjoy tea houses. She made the reservations and I didn't have anything else to do but attend. I had asked before hand if we were doing afternoon tea but she made it a point to say no, we would just be ordering off the menu. We got to the tea house and its beautiful inside, perfect decor and it just feels cozy and quaint. So we were seated and were given tea menus and picked out our tea of which there was a very large selection. But no actual menu of food. So my grandmom asked the server about it and she let us know that there is only afternoon tea. So the first round comes out, and we're ok, I think it was pepper jelly on a cracker. So then as the main meal comes out, its a beautiful selection of finger sandwiches. Which is great...except I'm a pescetarian ( usually in situations like this I just say i'm a vegetarian to make things easier. ) So I said "Oh, I'm actually a vegetarian, is there anyway I can get a vegetarian friendly plate? The server just looked at me like "how dare I" and she said " You should have let us know that when you made the reservations." I just pointed to my grandmom and said how she actually made the reservations and I knew nothing about any of this. So the server turned to my grandmom and said " we specifically ask if there are any dietary restrictions we need to know about." My grandmom replied with " oh I didn't think that being vegetarian was a restriction. " So, the server just left the plate and goes, "well I can bring you a few cucumbers." Then she comes back out with a tiny plate with two cucumbers on it, and repeats about how we should have let them know ahead of time. I was feeling sorta crappy because half of my lunch I can't eat, and I was annoyed at my grandmom who immediately asked if I was going to eat my sandwiches that have the meat on them. Then the person who I would assume is the owner comes out and just checks in and explains that they ask about restrictions when making reservations because they would have made a meal just for me and that next time, just make sure I say something when calling. She had a much more pleasant tone than the server who delivered the food, who honestly made me feel bad for something that wasn't my fault, even though I know that wasn't her intention. I just wish that they would have confirmed that there were no restrictions as we were seated. Everything there that I could eat was delicious and the tea was amazing.

Yelp
I can't believe there aren't more reviews for the Painted Teacup, but I'm almost afraid to write one, since it's already pretty difficult to get a reservation here. This is really a dining experience unlike any other. I've gone a couple times for high tea, and I've learned the following: DO NOT EAT BEFORE COMING HERE. The sandwiches, breads, and cakes they serve are very small (bite-size, even), but they give you SO MUCH that you will leave full. There's no menu--it's just whatever they serve you--but there's so much good food that you won't even miss choosing what to eat. Not to mention all the tea you'll drink--they have an impressive, unique tea list that is many pages long, but if you're feeling overwhelmed by the choices, the staff is happy to recommend something depending on what you're in the mood for. Tea is served inside an old house that is nicely decorated and really transports you back in time to when women had nothing better to do but sit around, eat, drink tea, and gossip. Therefore, it's a great place to go with groups and with people you haven't caught up with in years. The whole service takes a couple hours, and they seem to encourage you staying and chatting. Everything is cooked right on the premises, and it's all delicious. It's a little pricey, but obviously, this isn't something you're going to do everyday. This is definitely one of my favorite places for mother/daughter, group (mostly girls), or girlfriend catch-ups. Love it!!

Yelp
The cutest little tea party since Alice in Wonderland!!! I happily stumbled across this little tea house thanks to Yelp, and after reading the great reviews from my fellow Yelpers, I had to make a reservation STAT. So, I grabbed my foodie cousin, hopped into the car and drove my merry little self all the way to Upper Darby, not knowing what to expect. And as I drove through some questionable neighborhoods, I was starting to get nervous and anxious as to where I was really going. But then, as I drove across the bustling street, (Highland Ave at State Rd), this large, beautiful Victorian house looms right in front me and no joke, I squealed "This place is so stinking cute!!". I quickly park in the small parking lot on the property (thankful for not having to look for street parking), took a deep breath and scuttled my way inside. As soon as I walked in, I was wrapped in warmth and all things pretty. They have a small gift shop right in the front foyer of the house filled the homemade jams/jellies, jewelry, and other collectables and knickknacks--I later found out that the gift shop extends up the staircase and throughout the 2nd floor of the house. My cousin and I were quickly greeted and then taken back to our reserved table. The place is the epitome of all things frilly and girly and I couldn't be more happy. We were given a tea menu and once we selected our teas the food started coming. We were presented with a warm cracker topped with a hot jam cream cheese (so good!) while we waited for our teas. Next, we were served a piping hot cup of broccoli, cheddar and artichoke soup in cute little teacups. Next, we were each given a plate FULL of tea sandwiches and breads--chicken salad in a mini croissant, watercress sandwich, cucumber sandwich, a slice of quiche, a couple of spiced breads and a lemon cake. Finally, when we thought we couldn't eat any more, we were served a final dish of desserts--cookie, chocolate cake al la mode and lemon tart. Boy was I glad I didn't eat before heading there! The food was delicious, service was friendly and ambiance was enchanting...I couldn't have asked for a better experience. My only wish, and this is just me being picky, but I wish that the food was served on one of those little tiered trays instead of each person getting a full plate of food. As is, I would absolutely go back in a heartbeat even though it is a little out the way.

Yelp
For my mom's birthday, I took a large group (10 ladies) to the Painted Tea Cup for surprise high tea. In setting up this date and time, I had a lot of interaction with the Painted Tea Cup and they were able to accomodate us very well. Our group was in a private room upstairs. We were able to select two of the teas from the list to go with the many accoutrements laid out on the table (sugar, cinnamon sticks, puffy sweet melty thingys (official name), lemon/orange slices, etc). I believe we had three ladies serving us - they would come back in the room periodically to see if we needed any refills and to bring in each of the three courses. All of the food we had was fantastic! We had one person in our group that is gluten-free and they were able to take care of her without any problem (just let them know when you're reserving your space). Whenever they would bring in food, they would go through each item on the plate so you knew what you were about to enjoy. Afterwards, they brought out bags and wax paper so you could take home any goodies you didn't get to finish. (As someone that eats a whole lot, let me assure you that you won't leave hungry.) Okay one heads up: The biggest downfall of the day was parking, which isn't the Painted Tea Cup's fault. We were there on a really busy Saturday, so the lot was full. Since it's located on busy State Road (and since there's no parking on State Road), we had to take a little trek from the surrounding neighborhoods to the front door. Not necessarily a big deal, but I wanted others to be aware. Get the gang together and go to the Painted Tea Cup! We had a great time and will definitely be back!

Yelp
This place is such a gem in Upper Darby. The price per head is very reasonable compared to the prices in the city and the customer service is excellent. They give a generous amount of food on individual plates and you will be stuffed after coming here. I came here with a girlfriend and we both ordered different teas. The staff was nice about allowing us to try each other's teas. I liked my friend's pumpkin tea more than my white peach tea. This is such a cute venue for a bridal shower or a girls day. I will definitely be back.

Yelp
I took my girlfriend here for our four year anniversary, and we had a fantastic time! We are not tea connoisseurs by any means, but we had been to the Specialteas Tea Room in Brandywine, and really enjoyed it, so we gave this place a shot too! My intent upon making our reservation was to have some tea and maybe some pastries/sandwiches/whatever tea places have to eat. They gave us menus of strictly tea, and they even had a few special teas that weren't on the menu! If you're into tea, you'd be like a kid in a candy store here, as the list is rather extensive. We had finished our first cups of tea (she had a French Vanilla type of tea, and I had a black tea with a mango/pomegranate/orange blend) when we began to wonder if we could get some food. Before we could even ask, our server (Marie, very nice lady!) brought out two identical trays heaping with various baked goods, sandwiches, and just all around tasty things. When I say heaping, I mean it - it's a lot of food, which I did not expect from a place as dainty as this! After about a half an hour of eating, finally clearing our trays, and downing some more tea, Marie came back with two identical trays of desert! Strawberry short cake, banana cake with cream cheese frosting, and a chocolate truffle piece. Despite being filled, these were all so tempting that we had no choice but to eat them! All of this came at a pretty reasonable price, especially considering it's such a tea house is a rather unique and (I'd imagine) expensive market. This is a hidden treasure in Upper Darby, aka, pizza land. We will absolutely be back with friends. The service was excellent, and they did not mind that we were ignorant of how to have a proper tea. An awesome place that I would highly recommend to anyone in the area looking for a really cool, and unique experience.

Yelp
Wow, what a pleasant surprise! Went here today with six friends. We were there for two hours, and got table service, two teas, a lunch sampler and dessert. The locale is very quaint and they sell cute tea accessories and candles. We had a great time, and all think it's a great location for a baby shower, or a birthday party. Will definitely be back!

Yelp
We hosted my sister's bridal shower at the Painted Tea Cup and I couldn't be more thrilled with the experience. The newly renovated room upstairs was the perfect space and the staff was wonderful. I had read a few reviews that they didn't accommodate dietary restrictions if they were told the day of, so we made sure to call a few days in advance to notify them that we had two vegetarians and 1 raspberry allergy and they were on completely on top of it. I can't say enough about the tea, the food, and the desserts... we were thrilled. Thank you to the Painted Tea Cup for making my sister's shower truly beautiful!

Yelp
One mother lives in Delaware and works long hours; the other lives in Colorado. Our daughter suggested a bridal tea shower and wanted to try The Painted Tea Cup. Having the wedding shower here was the best decision we made! We didn't have to do anything other than send out invitations, have some favors for the gifts, show up and then pay - no stress for a beautiful, memorable event! Mary, the owner, was so easy to work with! I called her several months ago and she patiently answered all my questions - one of which was "can we bring our own bridal shower sheet cake?" Mary said that yes, we could bring a cake, but assured me there would be plenty of food and the cake wouldn't be needed. The shower was scheduled at 3:00. The rooms were set/decorated so beautifully. The staff was very attentive/accommodating. With each course, Mary explained, in detail, what was being served. For the guests who were vegan and gluten-free, there were adjustments to their meals so they didn't feel like they were missing out on any anything. I forgot to bring a trash bag for the gift wrapping, and the server quickly brought one to me. I cannot begin to tell you all the details about the wonderful sandwiches and desserts - but I can say they were beautifully arranged on the plates and were delicious. Our daughter chose the teas - both were so good, but my favorite was the watermelon flavored tea. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this quaint tea house!

Yelp
Love LOVE this place. We have gone the past two years for Mothers day and I can't wait to go again. The tea is delicious the food is scrumptious and the service is great. I also love that you can shop around in all of the rooms. They have such cute jewelry and handbags. The only downside is the parking is a little tight but we always seem to make it work.

Yelp
My friend and I go to Painted tea Cup every Christmas. It's a tradition. This year we made our reservation early and requested a table near the fireplace. Our reservation was confirmed. Got a call that they were bumping us to another table at a different time to accommodate another party. We can't go at the earlier time. We'll continue our tradition somewhere else that has some integrity.

Yelp
My friend and I had the loveliest time today. The ladies welcomed us as if we were coming to their home. The food was delicious and we lingered pleasantly while our teacups were refilled.
